Situated on the Atlantic coastline, Jacksonville is the most populous city in all of Florida. It was one of the first cities settled along the coast thanks to its deep-water port access. The city has been built around St. Johns River, which means that this is the ideal location for both saltwater and freshwater fishing. There are few other places that can match the range of Jacksonville fishing.
While there is plenty of variety for your Jacksonville fishing ventures, the area is best known for king mackerel. In fact, Jacksonville is actually the location of the biggest kingfish tournament in the entire region. The reason why is pretty obvious when you reel in your first fish. The waters around Jacksonville are full of mackerel. With such a robust population, many of the fish grow to be full-sized adults. Moreover, they feed quite prolifically. This makes a mackerel fishing adventure especially exhilarating. Mackerel are most often found on the many reefs and wrecks just off the shore in the Atlantic.
Beyond mackerel, there are many other options for Jacksonville fishing. The local population of cobia is plentiful, and many people like to snag a memorable red snapper. There are also many species of grouper and snapper that are caught nearshore. If you are looking for inshore fishing options, Jacksonville does not disappoint with black drum, flounder, sheepshead, spotted sea trout (speckled trout), and redfish as the prime targets.
Offshore of Jacksonville, anglers can encounter billfish such as blue marlin, sailfish, swordfish, and white marlin. Wahoo and the many dolphinfish (Mahi-mahi) that frequent these waters provide plenty of actions as well. In the deep on bottom there is also lots of tilefish and rosefish that keep anglers busy.
