Lake Okeechobee is the largest freshwater lake in Florida and the second largest natural freshwater lake in the contiguous US. It has a surface area of 734 square miles (1181 km), 143 miles (230 km) of shoreline, and an average depth of nine feet (3 meters). The maximum depth is 12 feet (4 meters). The Kissimmee River serves as the lake's primary source for water. The Herbert Hoover Dike is a earthen dam that surrounds Lake Okeechobee. .

The Seminole people, who were indigenous to Florida, fished in the lake for centuries before European colonization. They used nets, traps, and spears to catch fish such as bass, catfish, and gar. In the late 1800s, commercial fishing began on Lake Okeechobee. The lake was abundant with fish, and the industry quickly grew. Fishermen used traditional methods such as gill nets and traps to catch fish, which were sold to local markets and restaurants. In the early 1900s, sport fishing became popular on Lake Okeechobee.. Guides and outfitters began offering fishing trips on the lake, and the tourism industry grew.

Bluegill, Crappie, Largemouth Bass, and Sunfish are the most commonly caught species while fishing Lake Okeechobee. There are over 40 species of native fish in Lake Okeechobee. Known for many fishing tournaments and trophy sized Largemouth Bass, it is not uncommon to catch some weighing around 7 to 10 pounds. The lake's record for largest Bass caught is at 15 pounds and 5 ounces.
