Lake St Clair Fishing

Lake St Clair Fishing

It is believed that Lake St. Clair was created by glacial ice eroding the land and melting. Indians used this glacial lake as part of their navigation of the Great Lakes and called it Waawiyaataan(ong), meaning "at the whirlpool." Lake St. Clair is connected to two of the Great Lakes, Lake Huron and Lake Erie, via the St. Clair River and the Detroit River. It is 275,000 acres large with an average depth of 11 feet. For over 100 years, Canada and the US have maintained a deep shipping channel through the lake. The navigation channel has a depth of 27 feet.

Lake St Clair fishing is good for Brown Trout, Lake Sturgeon, Muskie, Rainbow Trout, Smallmouth Bass, Walleye and Yellow Perch. Around 750,000 Yellow Perch are caught here every year. Lake St Clair fishing is possible during any season. Ice fishing is a possibility during winter because the surface tends to freeze over.

Yellow Perch and Sturgeon are the top catches during winter. You also have a good chance of catching Brown Trout in December and Rainbow Trout in February. The lake is stocked with Salmon in the summer. Other species you could target in the summer include Largemouth Bass, Muskie, Rainbow Trout, Smallmouth Bass, Walleye, White Bass and Yellow Perch. A few Michigan state records come from Lake St. Clair, including an American Eel at 7.44 pounds and 43 inches and a Mooneye at 1.69 pounds and 14.38 inches.
