Ocean Isle Beach, a little town with lots of charm, is located on the Atlantic Ocean and is connected to the Intercoastal Waterway, offering its own escape from more touristy locations down or up the beach. While Ocean Isle Beach is popular with vacationers looking for a place to unwind, it is also a great spot for fishing.
When you are thinking about Ocean Isle Beach fishing, there is no shortage of options. The town is entirely coastal, and it runs from Tubbs Inlet to Shallotte Inlet in North Carolina. With great backwater flats, ocean side pier, and lots of guides in the area, it means that there are ample opportunities for inshore fishing. Black Drum, Flounder, Red Drum, and Speckled Trout are the most common targets.
If you are in search of a big catch, then Ocean Isle Beach fishing could be just the thing for you. In the spring and fall, the population of King Mackerel is especially abundant. This makes it possible to snag one of these fish on a regular basis, and some large specimens have been recorded in the area. There is also good Cobia fishing in May right off the beach. Bluefish and Spanish Mackerel are prolific much of the year.
Bottom fishing on the many reefs and shipwrecks off the coast provide lots of action. Lots of Gag Grouper, Red Grouper, Scamps, and Snowy Grouper are caught from the nearshore to the deep. The Gray Snapper (Mangrove Snapper) state record was caught here weighing 12 pounds and 5 ounces. A 6 pound and 9 ounce Vermilion Snapper (Beliner) also holds a state record from nearby structure.
If you are interested in catching Tuna or Wahoo, then Ocean Isle Beach fishing can be quite appealing. During certain parts of the year, it is not uncommon to reel in Blackfin Tuna, Bluefin Tuna, or Yellowfin Tuna. In 1987, someone even managed to reel in a Sailfish that weighed 100 pounds. That NC state record still holds to this day, and it is a testament to how prolific these waters can be. The bottom line is that fishing in Ocean Isle Beach offers a wealth of possibilities to eager anglers.
