Spero's Winter 2017 Fishing

 | By Seamus on 6/7/2017 11:47:35 AM | Views (1576)
It’s the time of year that us Queenslanders think it’s cold, as the time of the year happens to be called winter, but as we all know apart from the early morning cold south westerly's, the days end up being sunny, warm and glassy, and the most spectacular sunrises and sunsets, which is an ideal time for most of us mad fisherman to get out for a feed of fresh fish.

The first sign of cooler weather bring on the tiger squid around most of our Bay Islands with the eastern side of Green Island being very productive, especially in the 3 to 5 ft. mark red, brown and silver squid jigs. The 3.0 to 3.5 gm. jigs are working very well again this winter.

The whiting are again plentiful in all the banks in the Rous Channel and the small boat passage, and of course the sandhills at Moreton always has whiting, and squid in the grassy areas in front of the small Sandhills all the way to the entrance to the Blue Hole.

The school mackerel should get better and better as the winter season progresses and the areas you should be looking at are the Hope Bank beacons, the deeper gutters in the Rous and Rainbow Channel. The western side of Moreton Island especially around Shark Spit all the way to Tangalooma Point, also Peel Island in front of the lazaret gutter should start producing school mackerel as well.

The squire and snapper season has started well for this time of the year with all the shallow reefs around the bay islands fishing very well as is the artificial reefs, but as with most close to home reefs they are fished quite hard so be prepared to put some time in and try and use the freshest bait you can get a hold of. Small whiting, pike and garfish are probably the best for our Bay.

So put the beanie and the fleecy on for the early morning start and then back into summer shorts and t shirt for the rest of the day, and get a fresh fish for dinner because before we know it spring and summer will be upon us again.

And don't forget for weekly updates on fishing in the bay, East Coast Marina sponsor my www.fishingmonthly.com.au Moreton Bay reports, will keep you up to date on where the fish are biting all year round.Good fishing, Spero.
