Our days here at Oregon Inlet Fishing Center are getting longer which means it’s only a matter of time until our docks are full of meat. Our staff is gearing up for the 2021 season as well as each captain and mate are making sure their boats are ready to give you the best day on the water here at the fishing capital of the world. Each week this fishing season we will highlight a different boat in the offshore, nearshore and inshore fleets to familiarize you with a few new and many familiar hulls and faces.
Starting on the west side of the creek in slip number twenty you’ll find the fifty seven foot custom sportfisher with Captain Olan West at the helm. Built in Morehead City, North Carolina by Leonard Rigsby the West Wind cruises at a smooth twenty five knots powered by twin 735 HP Detroit diesel engines. Her spacious salon consists of a refrigerator, microwave, air conditioning and heat with room to stretch out on the sofas during your ride out to the gulfstream or the post fishing power nap on the way to scales. An AM/FM satellite radio and a TV/VCR are available to you as well while you’re eating lunch or cranking in tuna.
In the cockpit you’ll find three chairs and Shimano® Rods and Reels to make your offshore fishing trip successful and safe. Here you’ll also meet first mate, Larry Bailey. Coming from Currituck, North Carolina he has been fishing since he was knee high to a grasshopper and has grown up on the Outer Banks waters all his life. Whether you're in it for supper or the chase, partners of five years, Olan and Larry will do their best to make your fishing dreams come true.
Born in Charlottesville, Virginia but no stranger to the Outer Banks, Captain Olan West visited every summer as a child with his family and quickly fell in love with the water and fishing. He graduated high school in 1982 and found himself on Ocracoke island with a commercial long lining job. After his years of commercial fishing he was hired as a mate on a sportfishing boat and made his way north to Nags Head in 1996. He dug his roots and became captain of the private boat called the “Sea Bear”. He then made plans to build and run his own charter boat that splashed in 2001. Mrs. West, who is a local school teacher and Olan’s two daughters all enjoy life on the water as well.
A full day with Olan and Larry in the gulf is $2,268.00 not including 15-20% mate tip and allows six people in your party. To fish aboard the West Wind, Oregon Inlet requires a deposit of half. Everything you need for fishing is included in this charter. The only things you’ll need to bring are lunch, drinks, sunglasses and a camera! The gulf stream is Captain Olan's second home and the West Wind family looks forward to fishing with you this summer.
