Shhhhh, secret spot!
Alix Riseborough ducked beneath the surface and got herself a solid trout at the Montebello Islands.
Broome catches
There was no case of the Monday blues for Ben Lye at the start of the working week after he landed this awesome bluebone off Broome while wetting a line on Sunday. Fantastic fishing, Ben! 😁😁😁

Boats

Billfish enthusiasts have been encountering sailfish and the odd black marlin in waters off Barred Creek and Quandong. Reef fishing has been productive in 30m to 50m of water where red emperor, saddletail snapper and Rankin cod have been found in reasonable numbers. Bluebone, coral trout and fingermark bream are among the species being caught closer to shore near Gantheaume Point and within Roebuck Bay. Big numbers of cobia have appeared offshore in the past couple of weeks.

Shore based

Sportfishers have been using soft plastic and hardbody lures to catch queenfish and trevally at Entrance Point and Echo Beach. Cable Beach and Coconut Wells are still producing lots of whiting as well as a few garfish and yellowfin bream. Threadfin and bluenose salmon are a chance near the mouths of the local creeks. Some nice mud crabs have recently been caught at Willie Creek.
Exmouth catches
Peak Sportfishing Adventures have been putting clients onto a couple of hard-fighting GTs lately!

Boats

Spanish mackerel seem to be about in very good numbers with dozens of 10kg to 20kg fish being caught on deep-diving minnow lures. The toothy pelagics have also been caught by those casting stickbaits along the back of the reef line and near the Muiron Islands. Soft plastic lures have been working well on spangled emperor, golden and gold spotted trevally near the bombies inside South Passage. Squid continue to be caught in very good numbers in 2m to 3m of water near on the Gulf-side.

Last week, Recfishwest's Mike Minutillo was buzzing with this coral trout while fishing off of Exmouth.

Shore based

Holidaymakers have been enjoying their catches of yellowfin whiting, yellowfin bream and flathead at the beaches near town. Squid can be targeted at the marina as well as at Bundegi Jetty and Learmonth Jetty. Spangled emperor have been caught on baits and lures north of Tantabiddi. Queenfish, golden and small giant trevally are common at many of the west side accesses.

Scott’s Species – giant herring, stunning slender silver speedsters

Wowee! Check out this impressive giant herring that Glenn Edwards caught in the Exmouth Gulf. 😁

Slender, silver, speed machines! Giant herring are without doubt an awesome sportfish to target, writes Western Angler editor Scott Coghlan in this week’s Scott’s Species. When they are around and on the bite, the big boils, bow waves, explosive strikes and stunning leaps make for an unforgettable fishing experience. Read the latest Scott's Species.

Kalbarri catches

Boats

Spanish mackerel have been caught on bibbed minnows and rigged garfish trolled north and south of the river mouth. Longtail tuna and mack tuna are evident offshore as are schools of yellowfin tuna. Charter boat operators have been putting their clients onto red emperor, dhufish, Rankin cod and spangled emperor in 30m to 50m of water. Pink snapper, coral trout and baldchin groper have been caught closer to shore.

Shore based

Mulloway have been caught in the lower reaches of the Murchison River including at Chinaman's and the jetties. More mulloway have also been coming from the local beaches alongside tailor and dart. Storm garfish and herring are a chance early morning at Red Bluff. There are still yellowfin whiting being caught in the river in front of the supermarket while black bream and estuary cod can be found upstream.
Geraldton catches
Mid West fisher Ben Svenson was more than happy with this tailor near Geraldton. Lovely work, Ben.

Boats

Reef fishers caught dhufish in the 48cm to 60cm range and baldchin groper to 50cm in 30m to 35m of water near the shipping channel. Bigger dhufish have been picked up near African Reef and South West Bank. Big schools of pink snapper in the 3kg to 6kg category have been found about 10 miles out from Horrocks and Coronation. Dinghy and small boat fishers have been catching herring, skippy, snook and squid inshore.

Shore based

The mulloway run experienced along the local beaches continued for another week following reports of dozens more fish in the 9kg to 17kg range recently landed at Flat Rocks, Southgates, Batavia Marina, Drummond's Cove and Coronation Beach. Tailor have been appearing morning and evening at similar spots as well as at the first and second points at Greenough, Tarcoola Beach and Separation Point. Yellowfin and school whiting can be targeted along any of the beaches provided it is reasonably clear of seaweed.
Lancelin catches

Boats

After a long spell of inclement weather preventing small boats from leaving Lancelin's bay, this week provided some fantastic boating windows. Of the fishers who were able to get out, the demersal fishing was reported to be relatively slow. However, those who found the sought-after demersals caught baldchin groper, dhufish and breaksea cod. The depths from 45m to 80m produced better numbers of larger fish. The inshore fishing has been productive with plenty of herring, skippy, tarwhine, snook and squid caught around various parts of the bay.

Shore based

Mulloway in the 15kg to 20kg range have been caught from beaches close to town, with good gutters formed in the recent storms. Tailor have not been very active, with only a few fish caught at either sunrise or at the peak light transition bite time. Lancelin's jetty has been good for plump sand whiting by day, while plenty of herring are coming in under the lights at night. However, these herring have proven to be fussy at times. Squid hunters have found the best time is early mornings.

Are you fishing the prestigious Dampier Classic?

King Bay Game Fishing Club is set to hold its 45th Dampier Classic this weekend, starting from today.

King Bay Game Fishing Club’s prestigious fishing tournament – the Dampier Classic – will be held this weekend from today until Monday. Many game fishing enthusiasts will chase hard-fighting fish including big billfish, trevally and wahoo during the 45th running of the competition. Recfishwest are delighted to be a part of this year’s event and will be at the filleting tables each night collecting fish samples for the ongoing Fishing for Science program. Fishing tournaments offer an excellent opportunity to collect data from a whole range of species for scientific research. And, for all the mad-keen young fishers, the Recfishwest team will also be hosting a SunSmart Fishing Clinic on Sunday from 11am to 1pm at the KBGFC gantry. Contact King Bay Game Fishing Club to register your kid(s). Find more details about Fishing for Science and how it promotes greater stewardship of the ocean here.

Esperance catches

Boats

Dinghy and small boat fishers have been catching squid with tubes to 40cm, as well as herring, skippy and King George whiting inshore. Mixed catches of queen snapper, breaksea cod, harlequin fish and skippy have been picked up near the islands. Those who managed to visit their marks beyond the islands scored nannygai, pink snapper and Samson fish.

Shore based

For locals and holidaymakers, the Esperance and Taylor Street jetties have herring, snook and squid on offer. King George whiting, black bream and flathead have been picked up at Bandy Creek Boat Harbour. Salmon have been caught at many of the beaches including Fourth Beach, Salmon Beach and Nine Mile Beach. Gummy sharks have been landed in good numbers at Fourteen Mile Beach, Alexander Bay and Thomas River. Steven Howe caught a 43.5cm hood to claim the Southern Sports and Tackle Kraken Comp's $1,134 top-prize from 81 fishers. Oli Stevenson was runner-up with a 40.5cm hood.
Great Southern catches

Boats

Very few vessels travelled to the offshore grounds this week due to unfavourable weather. Pink snapper have been found near Michaelmas and Breaksea islands, while Samson fish and yellowtail kingfish have occasionally been turning up. King George whiting are mostly being caught in the deep and clean inshore waters. Squid seem to also be preferring the seagrass areas where the water has been cleaner. Lures trolled out from the headlands may produce salmon and bonito.

Shore based

Salmon are still present at many of the beaches including Lowlands, Shelley Beach, Cosy Corner and Sand Patch. Herring are in very good numbers right along the coast, while the beaches towards Denmark are producing lots of tarwhine. Skippy can be targeted in the deep channels and reef holes. Frenchman Bay is rather discoloured, but is still producing herring, skippy and the odd squid. Black bream are sometimes being caught in the extreme lower reaches of the King and Kalgan rivers.
South West catches
Craig Hutcheson joined Tommy Miller and enjoyed glassy conditions off Bunbury, heading wide off the South West capital in search for fish of the DEEP and this blue-eye trevalla was the result. 👀

Boats

Pink snapper have been caught in reasonable numbers in 6m to 15m of water off Busselton and Bunbury, when conditions have been favourable for boating. Anchoring in these depths and maintaining a burley trail has been the most effective method in catching them. Small dhufish and lots of skippy have also been picked up with this method. King George whiting catches are increasing in Geographe Bay, much to the joy of Busselton and Bunbury's fishing community. Squid are still being caught along the seagrass beds, despite the discoloured inshore waters following the recent stormy weather.

Shore based

Salmon have occasionally been appearing in small schools at Eagle Bay and Castle Rock. Tailor are a chance at Elmore Road, Fish Rock and Bunker Bay as well as at Smiths Beach, Mitchells and Honeycombs, when conditions permit. Mulloway and pink snapper have been among sought-after species caught from Busselton Jetty this week. Daniel Liuto, pictured below, has been among fishers putting in the long hours after dark in search of mulloway from the iconic structure.

Land-based fishing at its best! South West guru Daniel Liuto with a 1m mulloway from Busselton Jetty.

Herring and skippy can be targeted from the rocky headlands located on both sides of Cape Naturaliste. Beaches north of Bunbury, including Belvedere and Binningup, have produced bread-and-butter species for surf casters. Those who have a drone have been targeting pink snapper from these shores.

Brendan Stemp went chasing rainbow trout but ended up with this 47cm redfin perch. Awesome effort!

Freshwater

Click the photo above to watch the highlights from last month's marron release at Waroona Dam.

Yesterday afternoon, 10,000 more marron were stocked in Waroona Dam as part of the marron stocking program. Recfishwest's Steph Watts and Matt Gillett joined the Aquafarms crew and released the one-year-old crustaceans. Funded by recfishing licence fees, this initiative will see 300,000 marron stocked across the Peel and South West regions over the next three years. Yesterday's release comes just weeks after 50,000 of the South West freshwater fishing icons were stocked across Waroona Dam and Logue Brook Dam.

Mandurah and surrounds

Mandurah

The depths off Mandurah have produced dhufish and baldies for boat fishers this week. Closer to shore, pinkies have been found by savvy fishers while skippy and Sambos have been on offer to those burleying up. Herring, skippy and sand whiting have formed the bulk of the catch for land-based anglers at Dawesville Cut. Good sized King George whiting have been caught as well, generally around the jetty. Earlier in the week, there were several smaller snapper taken from the ocean end of The Cut. The Murray and Serpentine rivers have black bream on offer, while chopper tailor have also kept anglers entertained.

Secret Harbour / Warnbro / Port Kennedy / Rockingham / Safety Bay

Point Peron has been producing plenty of tarwhine, herring and tailor for land-based fishers. Most spots around this region are producing herring, pilch, whiting and skippy. Becher Point beaches are herring and sand whiting on offer. Those fishing from the Palm Beach jetty are reporting good catches of herring, skippy and squid. For boat fishers, the depths off Rockingham have had pink snapper on offer this week in addition schools of skippy.
Perth catches
On Monday, Jayson Spencer enjoyed a fun-filled snapper session in Cockburn Sound. Cracking fish!

Boats

For skippers who found a gap in the weather window, pink snapper were caught alongside Samson fish, amberjack and the odd dhufish in 20m to 50m of water south-west of Rottnest Island. Bigger dhufish were picked up off Two Rocks, while baldchin groper were found off Hillarys and Ocean Reef. Jayson Spencer, pictured above, had an epic session at Cockburn Sound earlier this week, catching a couple of solid pinkies. The Sound is a safe and accessible location right on the metropolitan doorstep. If you're looking for a family-friendly place to fish, give Cockburn Sound a go. King George whiting between 30cm and 55cm continue to be caught near The Windmills and along Parmelia Bank along with sand whiting, goatfish and flathead. It may take for the waters to clear somewhat before squid return to the inshore seagrass areas.

Young gun Tom Corrie loves chasing pinkies in the shallows off Perth.

Shore based

Pink snapper were caught from the northern and southern rock walls at the weekend and late last week. Coogee Marina, Woodman Point, South Mole, North Mole, Hillarys Marina and Mindarie Marina were among the spots where snapper in the 4kg to 8kg range were landed. Mulloway and Samson fish are also a chance from the stones when the weather is as rough as it has been. If you're fishing from the rocks, read our safe fishing page to ensure you return home safely. The deeper gutters formed along the beaches by the recent storms would be worth trying for mulloway, gummy shark, tailor and pink snapper. The lower reaches of the Swan River, including Fremantle Harbour, would also be worth trying for mulloway. Black bream can be targeted on baits and soft plastic lures downstream of Narrows Bridge.
