Catch of the Week!

Thank you, very much! Tom Schuiling was more than happy with this dhufish while testing Shimano's latest T-Curve range off Jurien Bay. Fantastic fish, Tom, it's a deserved 'Catch of the Week!' recipient.

Shhhhh, secret spot!
During an adventure to Dirk Hartog, Shaun Wieffering caught this pink snapper. Nice stuff, Shaun!
Broome catches

Boats

Red emperor and saddletail snapper have again been caught by reef fishers in 50m of water this week. Fishing vibes and big soft plastics has been effective when targeting these two species and Rankin cod. With the Broome Turf Club set to host the Broome Cup tomorrow, plenty of revelers have travelled to the coastal Kimberley town and made the most of the week by wetting a line. One fishing report reader currently visiting Broome for the races enjoyed a great session earlier this week, with cobia and red emperor among the fish caught. Off of Gantheaume Point, bluebone and coral trout have been found. Smaller coral trout have been taking small soft plastics at reefy outcrops relatively close to shore. If you're new to fishing and haven't fished plastics or vibes for trout before, cast out from the boat and let the lure sink down to the bottom. Once it's on the bottom, slowly work it back to the boat. Find out more about coral trout at our 'I Love Fishing' website.

Shore based

Big mud crabs have been caught at Willie Creek, with some skippers electing to leave their boats at home last Saturday amid unfavourable swells to chase muddies. Entrance Point and Echo Beach both still have trevally species on offer for those casting lures from the shore, in addition to the occasional queenfish. If you're planning a fishing holiday to Broome, read Western Angler editor Scott Coghlan's insights on how to fish the town.
Exmouth catches
In pursuit of big pelagics off Exmouth with his father Marc, Matt Vaillancourt landed a couple of memorable fish including this 1.2m wahoo. Sounds like it was an awesome day on the water, guys.

Boats

Behind the reef on the west-side, the pelagic fishing has been firing this week with plenty of Spanish mackerel caught. Matt Vaillancourt, pictured above, enjoyed a great session off Exmouth recently landing a big wahoo and a couple of chunky-sized tuna. A kayaker paddled out through South Passage and landed a wahoo, two Spanish mackerel and two yellowfin tuna. The 300m depths have produced ruby snapper for those who have put in the miles to travel far off shore.

Fletcher Jack is still smiling after catching this coronation trout during a recent visit to Exmouth. 😁😁😁

Shore based

In the gulf, yellowfin whiting have been caught off the shore in relatively good numbers. Squid have been also caught consistently, especially from the Exmouth Marina and Learmonth Jetty. Keen anglers targeting giant trevally off the shore have been losing plenty battles with the formidable opponents along the west-side's accesses. Most haven't been landed simply due to the beast's aggressiveness and size.

Scott’s Species – tailor, tough predators with razor teeth

Tailor are a fish that Western Angler editor Scott Coghlan loves to target, especially near Denham. ✔

From beaches, to rivers and estuaries, tailor are a special species that many WA fishers value dearly, especially for those based along the State’s west coast. In this week’s edition of Scott’s Species, Western Angler editor Scott Coghlan writes about the favourite near-shore species with razor teeth. Read more about tailor in this week's Scott's Species.

Kalbarri catches

Boats

Like most of the west coast, large swells and tough winds have prevented boats heading out this week. Prior to this run of unfavourable boating weather, dhuies and pink snapper were caught. If you want to know more about the quality fishing Kalbarri has to offer, read Western Angler editor Scott Coghlan's edition of Scott's Spots on the holiday town here.

Shore based

The Murchison River has produced a good run of mulloway recently, with fish measuring more than 1m caught this week. The marina jetty has become a bit of a hotspot for fishers during the poor weather, providing plenty of fun for those chasing bream. It is also worth soaking a bait for a mulloway, given the recent catches nearby. Avid tailor fishers have been catching fish to 6kg at the mouth of the river.
Geraldton catches

Boats

Once the weather improves, fishers can expect to catch dhufish and baldchin groper off Geraldton from the usual haunts, including African Reef and South West Bank. Pink snapper are also likely to be found in these areas. Once the weather does start to favour boating, make sure you tag #recfishwest in your fishing photos for a chance to be featured in the State-wide Fishing Report!

Shore based

The mulloway fishing along the stretch of coast both north and south of Geraldton has quietened in the past week. Also, weed deposited on the beaches has made it difficult to fish. However, those who persisted amid the tough conditions caught decent tailor at Southgates and Drummond's Cove. Time, effort and persistence has remained key for those chasing the bigger sized tailor.
Lancelin catches

Shore based

The gutters that have formed up along the beaches north and south of Lancelin were producing some nice tailor over the new moon period. A few mulloway were also caught before the recent storm hit. The beaches have suffered severe erosion to the back dunes, so caution is required to only drive suitable sections. During the stormy nights, Lancelin jetty fished well for both tailor and herring. Drone fishers have been quick to take advantage of light winds and have managed to capture some pink snapper as the seas settled from the passing storm.

If you're new to fishing, visit our YouTube page to see a variety of our 'how-to' educational videos. 😁

Herring are great to catch! They are a sought-after recreational species, but they can be temperamental to catch. Sometimes herring will eat everything that hits the water with a hook in it, while at other times they can be incredibly frustrating. The frustration is usually caused by these fussy little feeders ability to see the line coming out of the baited offering. Click the photo above to watch our instructional YouTube video about how to easily tie a herring rig or read more about the fish on 'I Love Fishing'.

Esperance catches

Boats

Last weekend, Esperance Deep Sea Angling Club members hit the water for the club's latest fishing competition. It resulted in great fish, including a whopping 33.5kg Samson fish. Fishers have had fun jigging for Sambos out wide, with big schools of the fish relatively easy to find at present. Harlequin fish and breaksea cod, around the 2.5kg mark, have been caught in small boats relatively close to shore. Skippy have also consistently been caught inside the bay this week. Squid, some boasting 40cm hoods, have remained common this week with fishers targeting the tasty cephalopods in 4m of water.

Shore based

At Bandy Creek Boat Harbour, King George whiting, small black bream and flathead have been caught by land-based anglers. The Esperance Jetty has produced squid, herring and skippy this week, while similar catches have been reported from the Taylor Street Jetty. Reports of salmon catches at Fourth Beach, Salmon Beach and Nine Mile Beach slowed this week.
Great Southern catches

Boats

The recent inclement weather across the Great Southern has been welcomed by farmers enjoying the heavy rains, but it has kept most of the region's boat fishers on land with torrid swells and strong winds. There has been brief opportunities for boats to head wide and skippers who capitalised reported breaksea cod alongside the occasional dhufish. Closer to shore, there have been decent catches of whiting. The squid fishing has been great near Bremer Bay, with Jake Poad among those to make the most of the action. Yellowtail kingfish have also been spotted by Bremer Bay spearfishers, although they have been a little shy.

Shore based

Beach fishing across most of the Great Southern, like the metro and South West, has been difficult this week given the weather. Herring and skippy have been caught along most shores, while salmon have been caught at Cheynes Beach, although not in large numbers. Pink snapper were caught at Wilson Inlet when it first opened, but catches have slowed in the past few days.
South West catches
After helping to release 10,000 marron into Waroona Dam last Thursday, Recfishwest’s Steph Watts cast her sights towards fishing and caught a couple of rainbow trout. The smile on your face says it all!

Boats

Boat fishers haven't had to travel too far off of Bunbury to target pink snapper, with the 8m to 15m depths most productive. The same can be said for those chasing pinkies off Busselton, as the awesome South West winter run continues to produce the sought-after fish. Dhufish have been caught by those who fished in 30m-plus off Bunbury, however, there has only been a slight window where conditions have allowed this over the past week. When the weather improves, the west-side of Cape Naturaliste will be worth trying for dhufish.

Shore based

The recent run of weather has made beach fishing near Bunbury difficult. However, the land-based angling near Busselton has remained great with mulloway and pink snapper caught from the Busselton Jetty this week. The iconic structure has also had bread-and-butter species such as herring on offer to those who have braved the tough conditions. Black bream anglers have found the Collie River difficult to fish this past week, following the heavy showers.

Freshwater

Click the photo above to watch the highlights from last month's marron release at Waroona Dam.

Funded by recfishing licence fees, the ongoing marron stocking program will see 300,000 marron stocked across the Peel and South West regions over the next three years. If you want to see the highlights from a recent release, click the photo above or read more here.

Mandurah and surrounds

Mandurah

The Dawesville Cut is still producing herring, King George whiting, tailor and skippy this week. Small pink snapper have also been caught at the ocean-end of the Cut. Those fishing from the beach are catching tailor being taken at Preston, White Hills, Tim’s Thicket section of beach south of Mandurah. Some of these tailor are quite a good size, with many reported to more than 1kg. There are still plenty of black bream in the Murray River and Serpentine River. It is suggested that anglers looking for them try the lower reaches of the rivers at the moment.

Secret Harbour / Warnbro / Port Kennedy / Rockingham / Safety Bay

Solid pink snapper and mulloway have been caught at popular fishing spots across the region this week. Most of these fish have been caught just after dark. Warnbro Sound has also been producing some good catches with some very big sand whiting, skippy, tarwhine and a few snapper. Anglers fishing for tailor have been catching models to 50cm from beaches to the south of Port Kennedy.
Perth catches
Skippy after school! Young gun Miles, who is eight years old, went for a quick after school session in the tinny and got among a few ripper skippy. Keep up the good stuff, Miles.📸 Rush Gang Fishing

Boats

This week, Cockburn Sound has produced pink snapper in addition to bread-and-butter species such as skippy. The safe and accessible fishing location is likely to have more squid on offer once the water visibility improves post-storms. For those who ventured out to the 30m depths between Hillarys and Two Rocks, dhufish have been found. However, finding a gap in the weather window has limited most skippers from travelling too far. Samson fish have provided plenty of fun to those wanting to tangle with the hard-fighting beasts at the Perth Fish Towers. It comes as pink snapper have been caught near Rottnest Island.

Shore based

Beaches north of Perth have had tailor on offer, with some fish measuring up to 55cm. However, anglers who have found areas holding tailor have been reluctant to disclose where the bulk of the catches are coming from. If you want to read more about different techniques to try to tempt tailor, visit our 'I Love Fishing' website. The northern and southern rock walls have remained productive when it comes to land-based snapper fishing following the recent weather. Bluewater Tackle employee Austin Prosser-Brightling has been among metro fishers making the most of the land-based pink snapper fishing of late. We spoke to Austin last year about how he targets pink snapper from Perth's shores. Find out what he had to say here.
