Shhhhh, secret spot!
BIG RED! Jess Oudt was more than happy with this red emperor from somewhere in the Pilbara. 😎
Broome catches
"Finally I landed my first cobia and it went just shy of 120cm," Nathan Southern said. " What an unreal fish with the power and fight to match — I'm stoked." Cracking cobia, Nathan, fantastic! 😎🎣

Boats

Sailfish and small black marlin are still being encountered in waters off Barred Creek and near The Peanut Reef. Spanish mackerel have been appearing in areas similar to where the billfish are being found, as well as in waters off Port Smith, Entrance Point and Gantheaume Point. Reef fishers have been doing well on a variety of demersal species out wide. One boat that travelled 90km offshore scored red emperor, saddletail seaperch, blue lined emperor and coral trout.

Shore based

Barramundi activity is slowly improving in the local creeks and the Fitzroy River, as water temperatures continue to rise. Dampier Creek and Crab Creek both produced good barra this week, too. Bluenose salmon have been turning up in good numbers near the rocks at Cable Beach at high tide. Threadfin salmon have been caught from the shore near Thangoo and Dampier Creek. The jetty has been producing a variety of species including queenfish, small golden trevally, small giant trevally and bream.
Exmouth catches
The Peak Sportfishing crew have been putting clients onto good billfish lately, including this sailfish!

Boats

Billfish enthusiasts have been using switch-baiting and conventional trolling methods to catch and release very good numbers of sailfish and small black marlin, as well as the odd bigger blue marlin and striped marlin off the west coast. Sailfish numbers are slowly starting to increase in the upper areas of Exmouth Gulf, which waters are expected to be graced with bigger quantities of sails during the ensuing weeks. The recent run of Spanish mackerel along the back of the west-side reef line, near the Murion Islands and within the Gulf, is being described as one of the best mackerel seasons in sometime. Big giant trevally are being caught on poppers and stickbaits near the back of the reef.

Shore based

Giant trevally in the 15kg to 20kg range are being caught on poppers and stickbaits at Oysters and VLF Bay. Big queenfish have been turning up quite regularly at the Bay of Rest and other areas of the Gulf. Yellowfin whiting numbers seem to have increased along the gulf beaches. There are still lots of squid being caught at the Exmouth Marina as well as at Learmonth Jetty, Bundegi boat ramp and Tantabiddi boat launching facility.

GT on the flats! Joel Borgers battled with this tough giant trevally in the shallows earlier this week. 💥

Scott’s Species – skippy, a bread-and-butter staple for WA fishers

Skippy are such a fun species to catch, often schooling up and taking small baits or soft plastics!

For Western Angler editor Scott Coghlan, skippy are one of his favourite species to catch for a raft of reasons. Take a look back at a well-read Scott's Species from earlier this year to read Scott's thoughts on the humble bread-and-butter species. Click here for more!

Kalbarri catches

Boats

Charter boat operators have been putting their clients onto pink snapper, as well as dhufish to 11kg, red emperor, Rankin cod and coral trout. More snapper have been caught on soft plastic and metal jigs just out from the cliffs where baldchin groper and, sometimes, coral trout have been picked up. Spanish mackerel catches have dropped during the past few weeks, but there are still schools of yellowfin and longtail tuna offshore.

Shore based

Pink snapper have been caught from the coastal gorges, along with the odd dhufish, with the run of great fishing providing a great thrill to many land-based anglers. Tailor have been turning up some mornings and evenings at Wittecarra Creek and Red Bluff. Bigger tailor seem to be getting consistently caught at Oyster Reef. There are some nice mulloway being landed in the lower reaches of the Murchison River at spots including the river mouth, sand spit and marina jetty. Yellowfin whiting numbers are building along the sand flats.
Geraldton catches
Geraldton guru Mat Svenson landed this mulloway from the beach near the Mid West town this week.

Boats

Reef fishers have been finding dhufish in various depths and areas. The smaller of the dhuies, typically less than 60cm, have mostly been caught in depths of less than 30m south west of Geraldton. The the bigger dhufish have been caught in 40m to 50m of water. Schools of pink snapper have been located in areas wide of town, while coral trout to a very impressive 75cm have been caught in 25m to 30m. Yellowfin tuna between 8kg and 15kg have been encountered between the mainland and the Abrolhos Islands. Dinghy and small boat fishers have been picking up small pink snapper, as well as skippy inside the reef at Point Moore.

Shore based

Tailor have been caught most mornings and evenings at Flat Rocks, Greenough River mouth, Drummond's Cove and Coronation Beach. Most of the tailor have been in the 40cm to 45cm range, however, there has been the odd bigger fish caught of about 60cm. Herring and pike have been caught in similar locations together with the odd mulloway of about 10kg. A 78cm pink snapper was landed south of Drummond's last week. Skippy and herring can be picked up at the local rock walls. Pages Beach has been fishing well for whiting in the 25cm to 41cm range at night.
Lancelin catches
Peter Fullarton has been catching herring on his yak recently when the weather has been calmer. Learning how to fish for herring is essential for any person who wants fresh bait or a good feed. Check out this iLovefishing article to find out more about this iconic species.

Boats

It's been a difficult winter for beach launching at Lancelin, plenty of days when the swell or winds have been up. Good weather windows are often short and midweek. Now that we are moving into spring we can expect improvements in weather over the next few months and the forecast is looking quite promising this weekend and beyond. A few larger boats left the bays shelter through the week and there were periods where kayaks and small dinghy’s managed to fish the bay. The usual dhufish, baldchin groper and breaksea cod where caught by demersal fishers. They also reported schools of small blue fin tuna in the 30-35m depths. Kayak and dinghy fishers were finding that squid numbers have been rising and there are still plenty of herring and skippy about in the bay.

Shore based

Weed will be a bit of a problem for a few days with the swell and high tides sweeping all the weed and vegetation off the beach into the sea during the recent storm. With calming weather over the weekend, the seaweed will start to consolidate and wash back up. The first places to clear are usually Fence Reef, Didie Point or Narrow Neck. Drone fishers have been onto some good snapper around Seabird and north along Didie Bay. Tailor have been hard to pin down, not sticking to any of the rules of sunset and rise. Lancelin Jetty has been prolific with herring at night especially during the recent storms, and some good numbers of squid have been caught here as well.

Esperance catches
Chasing squid from the Esperance Jetty on Saturday night, Lachy Warren caught this kraken. Catches like this show why fishing structures such as jetties are so important to communities.

Boats

Sand whiting, herring and squid have been caught by boat fishers at the well-known inshore haunts this week. Those who travelled to the islands caught Samson fish, yellowtail kingfish, queen snapper and harlequin fish. Nannygai to 50cm, queen snapper, breaksea cod, Samson fish and yellowtail kingfish were among the species caught out wide.

Shore based

Lachy Warren, pictured above, was among those chasing squid to catch a feed of tasty cephalopods from the Esperance Jetty this week. If you want to try your luck at catching squid and need some helpful tips, visit our 'I Love Fishing' website. The Esperance jetty has also produced herring and juvenile Samson fish, while the Taylor Street Jetty has remained productive. Salmon are in very good numbers right along the coast near Esperance, with many fishers catching and releasing up to a dozen fish in the 5kg to 7kg range in less than an hour some sessions. Fourteen Mile Beach has been producing lots of gummy sharks.
Great Southern catches
Brad Deere landed this beautiful nannygai, while fishing with soft plastics off Albany! 😁

Boats

Deepwater enthusiasts scored hapuka, blue-eye trevalla, nannygai and grey-banded cod during recent outings to the 300m to 400m depths. Reef fishing in 60m to 80m of water has been more productive in waters east and west of Albany, where dhufish, pink snapper, breaksea cod and queen snapper have been caught. King George whiting catches are increasing through the inshore waters as the water clarity continues to improve, with KGs up to 40cm caught. Sand whiting catches have waned inshore; however, squid, herring and skippy are about in healthy numbers.

Shore based

Rock fishers have been catching dhufish, pink snapper, breaksea cod, harlequin fish and blue groper from the platforms near West Cape Howe, Cheynes Beach and Bremer Bay when conditions have been safe and suitable. Yellowtail kingfish have been appearing in these areas together with salmon and Samson fish. Surf fishers have mostly been catching herring, tarwhine and skippy along the local beaches. Salmon were recently caught at Bremer Bay and the beaches east of there. Mulloway have been caught on soft plastic lures in Oyster Harbour. The lower reaches of the King and Kalgan rivers have been producing black bream catches despite the waters being discoloured.
South West catches
Fishing in 17m of water off Busselton, Anthony Pollard caught this 90cm pinkie — which tipped the scales at 9.5kg — on a floating mulie only 10 minutes after arriving at the spot. Great stuff, Anthony.

Boats

Pink snapper seem to have moved to deeper waters within Geographe Bay off Bunbury and Busselton, following the brief period where fish in the 3kg to 9kg range were found in depths of 4m to 12m. More snapper have been picked up off the west coast of Cape Naturaliste, together with dhufish, breaksea cod and queen snapper. Yellowtail kingfish and Samson fish have also been encountered off the tip of Cape Naturaliste. Squid catches have improved along the seagrass beds off Eagle Bay, Quindalup and Siesta Park.

Shore based

Surf fishers have been using baits and soft plastic lures to catch skippy in the 35cm to 45cm range at some of the west coast beaches that included Contos, Honeycombs, Canal Rocks, Torpedo Rocks, Yallingup and Three Bears. Tailor have been caught in similar areas along with lots of herring, the odd salmon and plenty of tarwhine. Sand and school whiting can be targeted along the shallows near Quindalup. The coastline north and south of Bunbury has been fishing well for bread-and-butter species, such as herring, especially when a good burley trail is formed.

Freshwater

Doing something a bit different from chasing kingies or snapper, Brody Ogle landed this lovely redfin perch from a secret spot somewhere in the Great Southern recently. Click here for freshwater tips!
Mandurah and surrounds
With a variety of species on offer in its wide array of aquatic environments, the coastal town of Mandurah, has a little bit of something for everyone!
Click HERE to read what Western Angler editor Scott Coglan has to say about fishing in Mandurah.

Mandurah

Anglers have been catching a few tailor at the ocean end in the Dawesville Cut with herring, skippy and whiting along with a few King George whiting being caught as well. Anglers chasing black bream have been quite successful as there are plenty of fish in the lower reaches of the rivers. There are also plenty of herring, skippy and whiting on the beaches to the north and south and anglers fishing the southern beaches at Tim’s Thicket and Preston Beach have been landing some big tailor in the evening. There are still a few salmon also still hanging around on the southern beaches. These beaches are the spots to try for mulloway with one 10 kg fish captured earlier this week.

Secret Harbour / Warnbro / Port Kennedy / Rockingham / Safety Bay

Boat fishers enjoyed nice catches of dhufish in 50m to 70m off Rockingham this week, when weather was favourable to boating. King George whiting have also been found, while schools of skippy have kept those fishing the inshore areas entertained. For anglers along the beach, sand whiting have been caught in good numbers along the coast south of Secret Harbour. Point Peron is fishing well for tailor, there have been plenty of whiting coming from the local bays around the sandy patches. Palm Beach has been producing an odd King George whiting and is a good spot to try for most species and also definitely worth a try for squid. Rockingham Jetty is also producing herring and a few chopper tailor.
Perth catches
Jake Rotham scored a couple of chunky tailor while spinning lures from the beach on Sunday. 🐟✔

Boats

Baldchin groper and breaksea cod were caught in 30m to 50m north-west of Rottnest Island this week. Schools of yellowtail kingfish and skippy have been encountered near West End, Champion Rock and Stragglers. King George whiting continue to be caught near The Windmills and in 10m to 20m of water off Cottesloe and City Beach. Squid catches are improving off Fremantle and within Cockburn Sound.

Shore based

South Beach, Cottesloe Groyne, Grant Street, Swanbourne Drain, Floreat Drain, Pipidinny Beach and Yanchep Lagoon were among the spots where tailor in the 35cm to 55cm range were caught this week. Herring are in very good numbers right along the coast, especially at the rock walls and jetties when burley is introduced. The Fremantle rock walls have been producing King George whiting and squid. Mulloway activity ordinarily increases in the Swan and Canning rivers at the start of spring. Tailor are usually also about in bigger numbers in the lower and middle reaches of the systems at this time of the year.

Young gun Cassidy Wainwright, 9, caught a couple of solid black bream near Maylands. Great fishing!
