Summer Fishing Report
Start of your morning right, with a healthy does of tarpon! These acrobatic fish are sure to put a smile on anyones face. Inshore tarpon usually ranging from 10-40 pounds are a great way to get things going on a morning of fishing. Tarpon are a unique fish, when the water is calm they must roll rolling is when the fish slowly rises to the surface to gulp air. Trolling motoring or poling along very slowly and silently we wait for the tarpon to surface, once the fish breaks the surface giving away its position we present our bait. Tossing a live shrimp artificial lure or a fly out in front of the fish, then slowly retrieving the bait is a great way to entice a strike from a hungry tarpon.
After the tarpon bite slows we head to the flats and creeks in search of a wide variety of fish including redfish, flounder, trout, and blackdrum. There are many ways to target these shallow water fish. Bait fishing being the most common we use live shrimp, mud minnows, or cut bait. Also fishing artificials can be a fun exiting way to catch most flats fish.
A nice redfish caught on live shrimp from a recent trip.
After fishing inshore it's time to head out matanzas inlet and target some real drag screamers. In the summer time big tarpon, huge jacks, blitzing bonita, and last but definitely not least toothy sharks!
Bonita built just like a tuna these fish are extremely fast and aggressive, a blast to catch on light tackle or even ion a fly rod.
