Shhhhh, secret spot

Donning the West Indies ODI cap, Tom Howe tempted a couple of brute bream on fly at a secret location. Tom's ability with the fly rod is like cricketers Kraigg Brathwaite or Chris Gayle with a bat! 🏏

Jason Trann caught this CHUNKY 80cm tailor near Carnarvon. The tailor would have shown more fight than the Perth Demons last year, Jason! Hopefully the Demons bounce back this WAFL season.

Broome catches

Celeste McDonald-Holland, of Reef Chief Australia, scored her PB barra near Broome last week, measuring in at 92cm! Find hints and tips for targeting barramundi in WA's north here. 😎

Boats

Barra, barra and more barra, writes Broome fisher Jade Relph. Judging by the three photos we're sharing in this week's report, the barramundi are really on the chew at the moment and Broome fishers are making the most of chasing the iconic northern sportfish. Like I wrote last week, there's a lot of baitfish in Dampier Creek and, subsequently, there's plenty of barra to be found. The same can be said for parts of the Fitzroy River, with the abundance of bait leading to trophy barra. Most fishers are fishing baits in both locations with success, but top-water lures such as fizzers and trolling hardbody lures are also resulting in good catches. The past week has again proved difficult for skippers to head wide off Broome, with conditions less than ideal. As a result, boat fishers who've remained in sheltered sections of Roebuck Bay have reported catches of threadfin salmon, tripletail and queenfish.

Shore-based

The mangroves relatively close to town are producing good mud crabs at the moment, with fishers deciding to chase muddies rather than wet a line with the moderate winds. For those who've managed to pick a gap in the weather or have persisted with the breeze, queenfish are still taking lures at the jetty near the Port. Barra to about 70cm have been caught at certain land-based locations near town, but again, fishers have had to find a sheltered zone or get lucky with a slight drop in the winds.

Todd Sullivan is among anglers to land a barra recently, landing this one somewhere in the Fitzroy River.

Exmouth catches

There's plenty of awesome species to find off Exmouth, such as longnose emperor! 📸 On Strike

Boats

Young gun Wes McIntosh enjoyed a great day on the water off Exmouth with Ben Knight aboard Ningaloo Sportfishing Charters recently, catching big golden trevally, coral trout, and juvenile Malabar cod. Plenty of Spanish mackerel are being caught near the Murion Islands, while bluebone and coral trout have been found at the shoals in the Exmouth Gulf. Speafishers are doing particularly well with both species.

Shore-based

Light tackle fishers are catching plump yellowfin whiting in the Exmouth Gulf. Small surface lures and metal prawn imitations are among the top performing lures when it comes to catching the sought-after 'tings. Plenty of big mud crabs are being found in the bottom of the Exmouth Gulf. It comes as fly fishers continue to enjoy permit catches in the lower parts of the Gulf. There were reports of big GT landed on stickbaits along the west coast, while spangled emperor were also caught from the west coast accesses. Squid have remained a reliable catch from the Exmouth Marina on an incoming tide.

Fantastic FADs sportfishing off the WA coast

Lake Kununurra produces regular catches of 1m-plus barra. But how do these barra get into the lake?

Kalbarri catches

Boats

A consistent southerly has made fishing offshore a challenge this week. However, charter operators who went out put their clients onto pink snapper and baldchin groper. Spanish mackerel catches are slowly starting to increase, with fishers enjoying the most success when trolling between the 15m and 20m depths. When at this depth, look for clear water otherwise it's best to go out deeper and try find schools of baitfish.

Shore-based

Although winds have been unfavourable for those fishing the beaches south of Kalbarri, pink snapper have been landed at the entrance of Lucky Bay while tailor have been caught at the same location in the early morning. Wagoe Beach is fishing very well for tailor and mulloway. Pot Alley and Red Bluff are both producing impressive land-based demersal catches including baldchin and pink snapper. In front of Wittecarra, tailor, dart and skippy can be achieved in the morning. Frustrations has produced mulloway, while Oyster Reef has fished well for tailor. The sand spit has provided great fishing for kids, with schools of chopper tailor up to 45cm found in the late afternoons.

Mid West catches

A strong southerly has ensured most Mid West fishers have remained on dry land this week, meaning reports of demersal and pelagic fishing out wide has been slow, writes Recfishwest's Sedin Hasanovic. I'm planning to go boat fishing off Jurien Bay in the coming weeks and hopefully the wind has improved by then. Shore-based

Land-based anglers along the Mid West coast are reporting good catches of tailor and mulloway. Tailor have been found all the way from Horrocks to Dongara, with some specimens measuring up to 75cm. Herring and dart are also in good numbers around the beaches south of Dongara and can be found in many spots near the town. Closer to Geraldton, Drummond's Cove is producing tailor and mulloway in the mornings and evenings, specifically on the northern side. The Batavia marina has also been producing good numbers of squid. If you're looking for a decent feed for crustaceans, people scooping in the Greenough River have been rewarded with solid blue swimmer crabs.

Lancelin catches

Lancelin's offshore fishing has produced great demersal and pelagic fishing this week. Tuna variaties, dhufish and baldies have been caught, while pinkies and breaksea cod have been found on the heavy grounds inside White Bank. Herring, tailor and pike formed bulk of the catch for the small boats fishing inside the bay.

Shore-based

Lancelin bay's beaches are producing herring, pilch, whiting and tailor. Didie Bay has been producing plenty of dart, herring and tailor for land-based fishers, too. The southern beaches have herring and tailor on offer, while drone fishers are stoked to be landing pink snapper. Holidaymakers fishing from Lancelin's jetty have been enjoying great catches from the structure this school holidays after sunset, with herring, tailor and pike on offer.

Esperance catches

South-easterlies, typical to this time of the year in Esperance, have made boat fishing opportunities limited over the past week, reports Southern Sports and Tackle's Oli Stevenson. However, for those who have headed out at sunrise before the winds have set in have been rewarded with big skippy to 3kg at Cooper's Reef. If you want the coordinates to Cooper's Reef, visit Recfishwest's website. Impressive queen snapper, some of which are an estimated 9kg, have been caught near Black Island recently while local fishers have been surprised by regular catches of pink snapper in recent weeks, too. Boat fishers wetting a line near Cull Island are reporting solid harlequin fish. Small boat owners are reporting yellowtail kingfish close to shore at known haunts to the east of town. One fisher reported catching one kingie, tipping the scales at an estimated 13kg, while casting a Halco Twisty.

Shore-based

With the persistent strong south-easterlies, land-based fishers have been looking for cover at beaches sheltered by headlands. These stretches of coast have included Kennedy Beach and Wharton Beach, with beach anglers catching bluespotted flathead to 80cm. Big flatties to this size are known to push closer to shore when the winds are strong offshore and feed in the gutters. Most sheltered beaches near Esperance are fishing well for sand whiting. Bandy Creek Boat Harbour has been a popular spot for tourists to fish this holiday season, with consistent catches of flathead and King George whiting achieved. The Esperance Jetty is producing squid with hoods to 35cm, especially in the mornings.

Great Southern catches

This south coast dhufish was a welcome surprise for Great Southern guru Nathan Woods. 😎😎

Boats

Demersal fishers who have managed to get out to the Continental Shelf are still being rewarded with catches of hapuka. Closer to shore, harlequin fish have been found near reefy areas between 20m and 30m of water. Princess Royal Harbour and King George Sound are both continuing to fish well for bread-and-butter species. The seagrass meadows throughout Princess Royal Harbour are still holding plenty of squid. Shore-based

The full moon is upon us, writes Callum Dowell, and this is a great excuse to head up the Kalgan River for a night time mulloway mission! The full moon has produced great rewards the past few months with mulloway in excess of 1m being captured in the Kalgan. River systems to west of Albany have been fishing very well for school size black bream. Torbay Inlet and the Hay River are both easily accessible and provide great land-based fishing options for anglers wanting to try their luck.

South West catches

Young gun Charlie O'Toole was more than happy with this 42cm KG at the Dunsborough artificial reef!

Boats

The west-side of Cape Naturaliste has fished well for demersal species this week, with dhufish and breaksea cod taking a variety of jigs and baits from 25m and deeper. The Dunsborough artificial reef has been a go-to location for small boat fishers lately, with King George whiting among the terrific species on offer. Charlie O'Toole, pictured above, was one of the fishers to enjoy a fun-filled session at the artificial structure recently, with anglers also reporting small Samson fish patrolling nearby. Want the coordinates? Click here! KGs, skippy and the occasional pink snapper have been caught at Dunsborough's Four Mile Reef. The same three species have also bee caught off Bunbury this week in less than 20m of water near the shipping channel. The sandy areas near the shipping channel are also resulting in catches of bluespotted flathead and the occasional flounder for Bunbury anglers. Kayak fishers are reporting good numbers of soapy mulloway in the Eaton to Australind stretch of the Collie River.

Shore-based

Yellowfin whiting have been caught at the Bunbury Cut this week by fishers working the midwater with small soft plastics, while metal lures are resulting in tailor to about 35cm at dusk. It comes as the tailor fishing continues to improve along the coast to the north of Bunbury, with Belvedere and Buffalo fishing well from 6am to 9am and 5pm to about 8pm. Myalup has tailor on offer too, but most beach fishers are opting to fish the small gear for whiting and herring with plenty of the bread-and-butter species in the gutters. Egi masters are continuing to catch respectable squid at Busselton Jetty, while whiting are taking surface lures along the flats near Quindalup. Smiths Beach is fishing well for tailor, while there've been reports of surf casters catching land-based pink snapper at the beach, too.

Freshwater

The four-week marron season is underway! With more than 10,000 marron licence holders in WA, chasing this awesome freshwater species endemic to the South West is a very popular pastime. Starting last Saturday at noon and continuing to noon 5 February, fishers will be exploring the South West and enjoy one of the State’s most unique and valued fisheries. Recfishwest is committed to enhancing our important marron fishery, with a three-year stocking program — launched with Premier Mark McGowan in 2019 — to see 300,000 marron released into Peel and South West freshwater waterways by the end of this year. If you're heading to Harvey Dam, Water Corporation have closed multiple 4WD access points to the dam due to anti-social behaviour. While the vast majority of marron fishers act responsibly, please make sure you clean up after yourself and treat the environment with respect. Wanting to get a feed of marron this season? Mandurah and surrounds

Mel joined Dwayne Robinson for a day on the water off the Rockingham-Mandurah region recently and scored this pink snapper!

Mandurah

Jigging for Samson fish off Mandurah has been providing memorable catches this past week, with specimens caught to an estimated 20kg. King George whiting have been found in about 25m of water, while skippy have been a staple once burley is introduced. For land-based fishers, mulloway have been caught after dark at Mandurah's southern beaches in addition to tailor, herring and bluespotted flathead in the morning. Mulloway are also being caught at Golden Bay and Secret Harbour. The Dawesville Cut is producing herring, skippy and King George whiting.

Secret Harbour / Warnbro / Port Kennedy / Rockingham / Safety Bay

Long Point, Kwinana and Warnbro beaches have all continued to produce tailor to about 50cm for land-based fishers, in addition to yellowfin whiting and skippy. The jetties across the region are offering herring early in the morning, while squid have also been caught. The Penguin Island sandbar is still a great spot to fish for flathead along the drop-off into deeper water. Boat fishers are reporting terrific catches of dolphinfish at the Mangles Bay Fishing Club's FADs, when the weather conditions are favourable. Want to fish the FADs? Find the coordinates here.

Perth catches

Remaining tight-lipped about the location, Dan Coughlan landed this baldie recently. Awesome stuff!

Boats

Elysha Lyons, pictured below, joined her twin brother Brodie and his mates out on the vessel off Perth last Tuesday. While everyone aboard didn't manage to register a notable catch, Elysha had a terrific day on the water catching a solid pink snapper! Elysha is among Perth fishers who've caught a pink snapper this week, with the depths between 12m and 25m between Hillarys and Two Rocks producing the sought-after species. King George whiting have also been caught in similar areas, while fishers anchoring and burleying for pinkies are often finding heaps of skipping within their burley trail.

Cockburn Sound's safe and accessible waters are fishing really well for squid at the moment, with kayak fishers enjoying consistent catches this week. Tuna varieties have been caught south of Rottnest Island and near the FADs deployed off Perth as part of the State-wide FADs trial program. Spearfishers have reported good numbers of dolphinfish near the FADs, however, line fishers have noted the colourful pelagics have been shutdown at times and not willing to take lures or even baits.

For young gun Bodie Blackwell, 10, nothing beats chasing tuna behind Rottnest Island.

Shore-based

The north metropolitan beaches are starting to fish really well for tailor, especially in the morning. Surf casters working stickbaits and metal slices through the gutters are reporting the most success, with fish to 55cm. Anglers soaking baits for tailors are also catching solid fish near Yanchep. For those based south, Cottesloe is also producing tailor to 40cm. Squid have been caught at North Mole this week, however, they're not overly big cephalopods. Floreat Drain is fishing well for bread-and-butter species, including whiting and herring. Flathead are continuing to be caught in the Swan River, especially at the suspect haunts closer to Fremantle, in addition to flounder. The flounder have mainly been caught as bycatch, taking small vibes.
