G'day <>,

Exmouth: 1, Zach: 0.

The Gascoyne fishing mecca gave me a lesson last week, with more trophy catches proving to be the ones that got away than I'd like to admit!

Whether it was toothy pelagics snipping my leader or bigger reef species making light work of my jigging outfit, I've returned south with my tail between my legs and a bruised ego.

I'd like to blame it on the skipper, but local avid fisher Anthony Ietto was brilliant when it came to putting us on the fish we were hoping to catch.

Was there a time when fishing left you defeated? Regardless, the recent Exmouth experience has made me even eager to head north again for another fishing trip!

For anyone wanting to contribute to the weekly fishing report, photos reflecting Recfishwest's responsible fish handling practices will be given preference.

If you're fishing this weekend, good luck and stay safe!

Catch of the Week!

Young gun Sienna out-fished her dad, Pete Hodgson, during a recent session off Port Hedland and landed this queenfish. That's a fantastic queenie, Sienna — keep up the fantastic fishing. 👏🔥😁

How to fish for barra in Lake Kununurra!
Lake Kununurra Barramundi Stocking Group member Paul Cunningham with a brute little barra from the safe East Kimberley fishing gem. Click the photo above to see how Paul targets barra in the lake.

Shhhhh, secret spot

Somewhere off Dampier, Ryan Turner flexed his muscles and landed this cracking GT. 😎🙌🤯

Shhhhh, secret spot

We doubt Jayson Spencer will be revealing this metro fishing location! Nice pink snapper, Jayson. 🤩
Broome catches
With the temperatures heating up across the West Kimberley, Tom White is keen to get stuck into the barramundi action in the Fitzroy River. This 1.1m beast was one of the fish Tom recently landed. 🙌

Boats

Excitement is building among Broome fishers, with more sailfish expected to be found off the coastal town in the coming weeks. The threadfin salmon productivity in Roebuck Bay is also really heating up ahead of the Broome Fishing Club's annual Thready Shootout to be held on 30 April and 1 May. Mack tuna are still being caught in areas relatively close to shore by boat fishers, while more Spanish mackerel are expected to be found off Cable Beach as the month progresses. Coral trout are taking a variety of jigs and baits, while red emperor are a chance in 80m and beyond.

Shore-based

Tom White, aka the Barra Bully, is putting in long hours along stretches of the Fitzroy River chasing big barramundi. The barra enthusiast scored the 1.1m barra recently while working a fizzer at one of his secret spots, resulting in a memorable top-water strike! Entrance Point is holding queenfish and small golden trevally, while the new town jetty is also producing the same species.
Exmouth catches
Sam Russell didn't even have to put his Crocs into 'sports mode' to catch this queenfish at VLF Bay!

Boats

The 100m to 120m depths are holding goldband snapper, while those fishing the 300m depths are reporting ruby snapper. If you want to read more about fishing for rubys, read Scott Coghlan's Scott's Species here. Black marlin and sailfish have been caught within the 200m line by game fishers, as Spanish mackerel continue to be caught on bibbed minnows along the edge of the west coast reef line. Stickbaits and poppers have been resulting in spangled emperor and the occasional golden trevally inside the west coast reef. Cobia and golden trevally have been found near shoals in 20m of water in the Gulf. Exmouth's King Reef also has big golden trevally on offer, while unstoppable cod are also lurking at the structure. Find the coordinates here.

Shore-based

Fly fishers are likely to encounter permit in the Exmouth Gulf's accessible wilderness areas, while bonefish can also be achieved on fluff along certain accesses on the west side. Jacobsz access has spangled emperor on offer, with the sought-after species taking baits at night. Queenfish and trevally species have been caught on stickbaits at Pilgramunna, while VLF is also producing queenies as shown by Sam Russell, pictured above. The Exmouth Marina is always worth a try for squid on the incoming tide.

Geraldton catches
Ahhhhh, what!? Evie, from Northern Addicts, sight casted this whopping 1m tailor at the Abrolhos Islands last week! After a quick happy snap, the tailor was released back to its home. What a catch!

Boats

There's been a couple of great opportunities to enjoy glass-like conditions off the Mid West capital recently. Yellowfin tuna are still being found in a host of areas off-shore and Spaniards are also a chance. More Spanish mackerel are being caught near the Abrolhos Islands. South West Bank is fishing well for bottom species, mainly baldchin groper. Small boat fishers can target squid, herring and squid inshore.

Shore-based

Evie, pictured above, has had an unforgettable experience at the Abrolhos Islands. While fishing for baldchin groper from the shore, Evie sight-cast and landed a very impressive 103cm tailor! Those fishing the beaches near Geraldton haven't had the same success as what Evie enjoyed at the Abrolhos Islands, yet there is still quality surf casting on offer. Tailor to 60cm are being caught at many locations including Horrocks, Little Bay, Drummond Cove and Tarcoola Beach. Squid continue to be caught in great numbers at the marina.
Lancelin catches
Excuse me, baby cobia, but you're lost! Darren Paul couldn't believe it when he landed this juvenile cobia while drone fishing at Ledge Point earlier this week. After a quick snap, it was safely released.

Boats

There has been an increase in Spanish mackerel activity, with a number of boats catching multiple fish in a session trolling along 15m to 20m depths. Tuna species have been mostly found at 40m and beyond. Boats heading out to Direction Bank were reporting strong north currents and difficulties getting onto the fish. Baldchin have been in pretty good numbers through the 30m areas. Pink snapper have been caught inside White Bank, with anchoring and burleying the best way to catch the sought-after fish in addition to skippy. Red crays have been prolific in close to shore. Squid have fired up with good numbers coming from the seaweed beds. Inside the bay, herring schools, Samson fish, squid, skippy, tarwhine and snook have been caught.

Shore-based

Darren Paul was very surprised when he reeled in a juvenile cobia at Ledge Point. It comes as fisher Jacob Jansen also landed a juvenile cobia while fishing near Rockingham recently. Although Darren's cobia catch was out-of-the-box, drone fishers are continuing to catch pink snapper to the north and south of Lancelin. A few mulloway were caught from various stretches of the coast this week, however, the tailor fishing has been topsy-turvy. Mullet schools have been passing north through the week along the nearshore. Herring have been in good numbers along the beaches and the size of sand whiting along the shore line has improved.

West coast demersal recreational fishing community consultation

As the peak recreational fishing sector body, Recfishwest is consulting fishers on your views and ideas on what further action should be taken to support the recovery of pink snapper and dhufish stocks. This is part of a broader consultation process that gives fishers multiple opportunities to provide valuable input into the future management of some of our favourite fish. It follows the latest DPIRD west coast demersal stock assessment which has shown that while there are some signs of recovery, west coast demersal stocks are not recovering quickly enough to meet the 2030 sustainability target set in the recovery plan launched for these species in 2010. Esperance catches
The depths off Esperance produced this breaksea cod for Tyson 'TNT' Tietjens. Awesome, Tyson!

Boats

Tyson 'TNT' Tietjens had an epic day fishing off Esperance last weekend, catching a breaksea cod, nannygai and a pink snapper. "I had a really good day on the water," Tyson said. "Even after losing a monster kingfish at the boat, I caught my first pinkie and a few nannygai on jigs and plastics." Tyson's picture above continues the great number of breaksea cod catches off Esperance in recent weeks. King George whiting, herring and squid are continuing to be caught by small boat fishers in the bay.

Lachy Warren with an eye-catching harlequin fish off Esperance last weekend. 😎

Shore-based

Mulloway are still being caught at Thomas River and Poison Creek. Roses and Munglinup are also holding decent salmon schools, as are parts of the coast near Hopetoun. Squid are being reported in good numbers at the Esperance Jetty, with herring also being caught in good numbers. The Taylor Street Jetty has herring and skippy on offer.
Great Southern catches
Safe to say Jake Palmer was more than happy with this dhufish off Albany last weekend! 🔥😎👏👌

Boats

Jake Palmer, pictured above, was among Great Southern fishers to catch a dhufish in the region this week, achieving his catch off Albany. Walpole and Denmark are also locations where boat fishers have reported dhufish recently. From 60m to 90m of water off Albany, pink snapper, breaksea cod and skippy have been caught but spots to east and west of town are reportedly fishing better. Hapuka, blue-eye trevalla and grey-banded cod will likely be caught at the Continental Shelf when those willing to head wide find a weather window.

Shore-based

Salmon have been caught at Cheynes, Normans, Lowlands and Sand Patch this week, while schools have also been spotted near Walpole and Bremer Bay. If you're chasing salmon this weekend, remember to download the Salmon Slam app and log your catches for a chance to win many awesome prizes. Also, keep the sand between your toes while chasing these iconic southern sportfish. The Wilson Inlet has plump whiting and the occasional flounder.

Luke Latty is taking part in the 2022 Salmon Slam, submitting this catch earlier this week. 🔥🐟
South West catches

Boats

Bunbury Artificial Reef has been fishing well for skippy, with boats anchoring away from the structure and burleying enjoying the best results. Samson fish to 15kg have been caught as bycatch though this method, too. The sandy areas adjacent to the shipping channel have been holding bluespotted flathead to an impressive 70cm, while it's this time of the year when more pink snapper start to be found in waters close to shore. Similarly to Bunbury, more pink snapper are likely to be found within the areas of Geographe Bay closer to shore off Busselton in the coming weeks. Find out more about catching pinkies on our I Love Fishing website. Dhufish are taking a variety of jigs and baits in the 30m to 50m depths off Cape Naturaliste.

Shore-based

Black bream to 35cm are taking small hardbody lures along the banks of the Collie River, between Eaton's Collie Bridge and the boat ramp in Australind at the Barnes Avenue and Eastwell Road intersection. Bream enthusiasts fishing early morning and working their lures slowly and close to sunken branches and snags are finding good fish. Belvedere Beach has the occasional tailor to 40cm on offer at dusk, while Binningup has bread-and-butter species including herring and whiting. The Busselton Jetty has squid, especially after dark, while pink snapper could be a chance from the iconic structure in the weeks ahead. Salmon schools are starting to show up in the South West, with salmon chasers having plenty of fun at Boodjidup, Injidup and Smiths this week. A few small schools were at Bunker Bay from Tuesday this week, but not in mammoth proportions.
Mandurah and surrounds

Boats

Vessels targeting bottom species just south of Five Fathom Bank have found pink snapper this week, while King George whiting have also been picked up in the same areas. Warnbro Sound is also holding plenty of squid at the moment, according to kayak fishers, in addition to herring and skippy. The northern area of Bouvard Reef reportedly has dhufish, baldchin groper and Samson fish to 1m. The Mandurah Artificial Reef also has plenty of skippy, in addition to smaller Sambos. Mangles Bay Fishing Club's FADs off Rockingham are holding dolphinfish and various tuna varieties. If you want to fish the FADs, find the coordinates here.

Shore-based

There's some funky fishing happening near Rockingham-Mandurah at the moment, to say the least! After Michael Hill, of Hill Bros Fishing, last week sensationally caught a tarpon on a micro jig while fishing from the shore near the Peel region city, an equally obscure catch was achieved this week. Jacob Jansen reported in Facebook group WA Land-based Fishing Club that he landed a juvenile cobia while fishing near Rockingham. It comes as Darren Paul, pictured in the Lancelin section, also landed a cobia near Ledge Point. Other obscure Rockingham-Mandurah catches in the area in recent years include a GT near Kwinana in 2018 and an estuary cod caught by boat fisher Riley Haines off Mandurah last month.
Perth catches
A trip to the FADs proved worthwhile for Myles Fleay last weekend with this dolphinfish! 🔥🔥🔥

Boats

Great conditions last weekend saw many boat fishers venture to the metro FADs to hook into sensational sportfishing off Perth. Dolphinfish were the staple capture at the devices deployed as part of the State-wide FADs trial program, as shown by Myles Fleay, pictured above. Want the coordinates to the FADs? Click here. Baldchin groper have been picked up between 20m and 40m off Hillarys and Mindarie, while Samson fish have been common at the North Metro Artificial Reef. Those on the pelagic pursuit are chasing Spanish mackerel near West End and at Three Mile Reef. Pink snapper, dhufish and breaksea cod have been caught in 40m to 60m of water north and south of Rottnest Island. In close, the safe and accessible waters of Cockburn Sound are holding squid.

Shore-based

The decent tailor run along the metropolitan beaches has seen fish to 50cm caught at many locations including South Beach, Leighton, Cottesloe, Grant Street, Floreat Drain and Trigg. Chopper tailor to 35cm are being caught at many locations in the Swan River, with most jetties providing action at dusk. The Causeway Bridge is fishing well for black bream, as are areas between Ascot and Maylands with flathead a common bycatch. South Mole and North Mole are beginning to produce more squid, while there are murmurings of pink snapper catches from rock walls in the city's north.

Dgeevan Ouchache, pictured, and Jake Rotham had an epic session catching and releasing tailor. ⚡⚡

SunSmart Fishing Clinics' Catch of the Day

Sponsored by Healthway

Well done, fellas!
Twenty young fishers from Our Lady of Good Counsel School in Karrinyup had an epic time at a SunSmart Fishing Clinic, supported by Healthway, last Saturday. Held along the beach just north of the Hillarys Marina, tarwhine were the main catch, along with some small whiting! Well done to all of the young crew who attended and had a fun time.
