G'day <>,

Easter is here, and for many of us based in the State's south, that means fishing for salmon!

If you're in the Great Southern or South West this long-weekend, be sure to download the Salmon Slam app and take part in the fishing competition.

There's plenty of fantastic fishing prizes to be won thanks to our partners, including Shimano, so keep the sand between your toes and give it a go!

To give you the edge in the Slam, I've taken an in-depth look at the fishing tackle that’ll help you land more salmon this autumn. Read more here.

For anyone wanting to contribute to the weekly fishing report, photos reflecting Recfishwest's responsible fish handling practices will be given preference.

If you're fishing this weekend, good luck and stay safe!

How to fish for barra in Lake Kununurra!
Lake Kununurra Barramundi Stocking Group member Paul Cunningham with a brute little barra from the safe East Kimberley fishing gem. Click the photo above to see how Paul targets barra in the lake.

Shhhhh, secret spot

This barra was quick to take Mat Hennig's small vibe in a secret East Kimberley location! 🤫🤫🤫

Scott's Species - sailfish, one of the ocean's fastest fish

I have never really caught the marlin bug, but I do have an undoubted soft spot for sailfish as the billfish of the people, writes Western Angler’s Scott Coghlan in this week’s Scott’s Species. Read the full story here!

Broome catches
🎶 I'm blue da ba dee! 🎶 Barra enthusiast Jono Ellis traded the river for the ocean and was singing Eiffel 65's pop classic after landing this 'orse bluebone at a spot relatively close to shore off Broome.

Boats

Spanish mackerel have been found off Broome more regularly this week, compared to recent weeks, writes local angler Jade Relph. I cast into a school of mack tuna on Saturday afternoon and before one could take my stickbait, a Spaniard was on the end of my line. Skippers trolling bibbed minnows off Cable Beach are coming across mackerel, however, those travelling to Port Smith for the weekend or a short holiday are definitely enjoying the most Spanish mackerel success. Spots featuring rocky outcrops in less than 10m of water north of town are producing bluebone. Coral trout and Rankin cod are accounting for most of the catches between 30m and 60m. Cobia are sometimes taking jigs on the drop in these areas before they can reach the bottom.

Shore-based

The town jetty is fishing well for queenfish and the occasional trevally, as is the jetty near the Port of Broome. Bluenose salmon are responding well to metal slices along Cable Beach and at Coconut Wells. Barramundi fishing in the Fitzroy River is continuing to heat up, with plenty of bait being found at well-known barra haunts relatively close to town.
Exmouth catches
Jigging the water column with a soft plastic isn't the most conventional method to catch a GT, but it doesn't matter when you land a fish like this! This 'G was a pleasant surprise for Cooper Watson. 🔥

Boats

Strong winds, especially earlier this week, has made boat fishing relatively difficult. However, for those who've been able to get out, Spanish mackerel have been caught off the back of Helby Bank, according to local fisher Cooper Watson. Spearfishers are reporting great opportunities for many reef species in the Gulf as the water clears up, with coral trout among the species on offer. GT and queenfish are also fishing well near the islands.

A new species was ticked off Jim Bastow's list last weekend with this longnose emperor. 😎

Shore-based

The accessible wilderness fishing experience offered by the Exmouth Gulf is resulting in permit and golden trevally for fly fishers. Squid are being picked up near Bundegi and also from the marina on an incoming tide. VLF Bay, when conditions are suitable, will likely still be holding queenies and small trevally varieties. Accesses along the west coast have spangled emperor, with Jacobz being the pick of the bunch.

Queeeeeeeeenie! Miha Pearce had an epic session fishing with light gear off Exmouth recently. 😁

Kalbarri catches
Young gun Tom Berry was buzzing with this silver ghost while fishing near Kalbarri last weekend. 🙌

Boats

Spanish mackerel and yellowfin tuna are both being found in good numbers off Kalbarri at the moment to the north and south of the river mouth. With the hot pelagic action, bottom species are also fishing well with pink snapper and the occasional dhufish also reported. Dinghy and kayak fishers have been targeting tailor in the extreme lower reaches of the Murchison River. Click here to read more about fishing Kalbarri on the 'I Love Fishing' website.

Shore-based

Most of the mulloway fishing is being enjoyed north of town, across the river. Tom Berry, pictured above, was among fishers to report decent mulloway from this stretch of coast last weekend. Tailor, including a couple to 70cm, have also been caught along the northern beaches. Wittecarra Creek, Red Bluff and Siphon are all producing tailor in the morning and evenings, with dart also nearby. The Murchison River is producing black bream near the boat pens and whiting adjacent to the local IGA. Ross Bezant enjoyed a terrific time wetting a line while in Kalbarri recently, reporting tailor, mulloway and Samson fish. Ross' nephew, Tristan Owens, out-fished the rest of the family, landing two decent tailor and the Sambo pictured below.

Young gun Tristan Owens, 13, with a land-based Samson fish from Lucky Bay.
Geraldton catches

Boats

Herring, skippy, whiting and pike have been caught by small boat fishers at the inshore areas off Point Moore, Pages and St Georges. Spanish mackerel are chance along the back of Pensioners Bank and near the Abrolhos Islands, while yellowfin tuna have been picked up near the islands too. Dhufish, pink snapper and baldchin groper have been caught near African Reef and South West Bank, albeit, not regularly this week.

Shore-based

Seaweed along the popular beach fishing areas between Dongara and Geraldton has been making things difficult this week. Seven Mile Beach has seemed to avoid the seaweed, with reports of mulloway to an impressive 15kg caught. Coronation Beach is fishing well for tailor, with the toothy species taking lures and metals in an aggressive fashion. Drummond Cove and Lucy's Beach have both had tailor on offer this week, while herring have also been caught in good numbers.
Lancelin catches
Droning baits out from the shoreline near Lancelin, Neil Ferguson landed this pink snapper last Thursday evening. Congratulations, Neil, that's definitely a catch to remember.  🔥🔥🔥🔥

Boats

Offshore fishers have been finding pink snapper in the 35m to 45m depths, reports Tailored Treks' Peter Fullarton. Baldchin groper have also been caught, with the odd dhufish and breaksea cod taking jigs and baits. The shallow grounds inside White Bank, in about 10m to 15m, have also produced pink snapper. Spanish mackerel and school mackerel have been caught trolling along both the 10m and 15m edges. The bay is providing a mix of species for small boats and kayakers with tarwhine, skippy, flathead, snook and an abundance of good size herring and squid.

Shore-based

Tailor have been biting well into the night as the moon increases intensity. The jetty has some nice clean water this week, resulting in improvements in squid numbers along with herring, tailor, snook and sand whiting. Drone fishers have been getting onto stonker pink snapper this week, while a few good snapper have also been caught on the cast. The beaches have a better size class of whiting and plenty of herring. Visitors to Lancelin this Easter long-weekend should take care traveling along the northern beaches, with some steep erosion cliffs. The coast to the south of town has been the safer 4WD option.

West coast demersal recreational fishing community consultation

As the peak recreational fishing sector body, Recfishwest is consulting fishers on your views and ideas on what further action should be taken to support the recovery of pink snapper and dhufish stocks. This is part of a broader consultation process that gives fishers multiple opportunities to provide valuable input into the future management of some of our favourite fish. It follows the latest DPIRD west coast demersal stock assessment which has shown that while there are some signs of recovery, west coast demersal stocks are not recovering quickly enough to meet the 2030 sustainability target set in the recovery plan launched for these species in 2010. Click here to complete the survey.

Esperance catches
Callum 'The Glove' McGovern with a lovely land-based skippy from somewhere along the south coast.

Boats

Strong winds kept most boat fishers on land earlier this week, or within the confines of the inshore areas. For those dinghy and small boat fishers wetting a line in the bay, herring and squid have been caught. Bonito can also be found off Esperance in good numbers around this time of the year, so be sure to keep an eye out for them. When conditions are suitable, expect breaksea cod, queen snapper and nannygai to be caught near the islands.

Shore-based

A school of small yellowtail kingfish was reportedly seen near the Esperance Jetty last weekend. The structure is producing bread-and-butter species, with youngsters in town for the school holidays catching herring, skippy and the occasional squid. Bandy Creek Boat Harbour has King George whiting, herring and solid skippy on offer. Skippy have also been caught at Fourth Beach, Fourteen Mile and Roses, while salmon are also a chance at all of these beaches.
Great Southern catches
Jarrad van Beem submitted this salmon photo into the best photo category of the 2022 Salmon Slam!

Boats

Albany's fish aggregating devices (FADs), deployed as part of the State-wide FADs trial program, will likely have dolphinfish on offer. If you're fishing the FADs, be sure to share your photos with Recfishwest for a chance to win this month's FADs photo comp prizes, supported by Richter Lures and Madfish Gear. King George whiting are being caught in very good numbers within Albany's inshore areas, while squid have been in similar grounds. Off Denmark and Walpole, demersal fishers are reporting better catches of breaksea cod, harlequin fish and the occasional dhufish, compared to the areas directly off Albany.

Shore-based

Many beaches across the Great Southern are providing salmon chasers with access to the hard-fighting sportfish, especially near Albany. If you're fishing for salmon this long-weekend, keep the sand between your toes and stay safe while fishing — no fish is worth your life. Lowlands, Cheynes, Bornholm, Shelleys, Sand Patch and Cables have all been locations where salmon have been spotted and also caught. All of these areas are reportedly fishing well for herring.

CAUTION: BoM is forecasting dangerous rock fishing conditions this long-weekend from Cape Naturaliste to Albany, with a south-westerly swell increasing from Saturday morning to around 3m, increasing up to 4m by Sunday morning. If you're going to fish from the rocks, take all of the necessary precautions and visit our Fish and Survive website for tips on how to stay safe.
South West catches

Boats

Demersal fishers launching from Cape Naturaliste are reporting dhufish and breaksea cod from 30m and beyond, while yellowtail kingfish can be targeted with jigs in less than 20m off the cape. Four Mile and Eight Mile reefs off Dunsborough are holding pink snapper, with the anchor and burley method leading to solid results. Pink snapper are also a chance at the Dunsborough Artificial Reef, which has been fishing well for skippy this week. Bunbury Artificial Reef has also been producing skippy, while there have been reports of mulloway near the structure at night time. Find coordinates to each of the reefs here.

Shore-based

Last Sunday's rain is likely to stimulate black bream action in the Collie River between Australind and Eaton, while the same stretch of river is still fishing well for soapy mulloway. Binningup and Myalup are both providing bread-and-butter species, mostly herring, with good burley trails attracting in the fish. Farther south, the salmon schools are slowly showing up at more South West beaches. The Easter long-weekend is usually considered one of the best times to fish for the iconic southern sportfish at Eagle Bay and Bunker Bay. Schools have also been encountered at Gas Bay and Hamelin Bay. If you're chasing salmon this weekend, be sure to keep the sand between your toes and enter your catches into the Salmon Slam for your chance to win many awesome fishing prizes.

Mandurah and surrounds
Joshua Zadow, of Bunyip Fishing, landed this fun-sized pink snapper off Mandurah. Nice work! 👌

Boats

Small boat fishers and those in 'yaks are picking up solid squid, some with 35cm hoods, in Warnbro Sound, while herring and whiting have also been caught nearby. Bouvard Reef is fishing well for sought-after species, including pink snapper and breaksea cod. Samson fish have also been caught in similar grounds on both baits and jigs. The Mandurah Artificial Reef has Sambos patrolling nearby in addition to the occasional pinkie and plenty of skippy. If you want to fish the artificial reef, find the coordinates here.

Shore-based

Kwinana Beach, Long Point, Penguin Island, Point Peron and Rockingham Beach are seeing good catches of herring, especially when burley is introduced. Whiting and squid are also being taken from these locations, alongside the occasional tailor in the evening. Anglers fishing the beaches to the south between Secret Harbour and Singleton on sunset have had success targeting mulloway. The southern beaches between Tim’s Thicket and Preston Beach are fishing well for bread-and-butter species, namely herring.
Perth catches

Boats

Dhufish and pink snapper have been reported between 30m to 60m of water south-west of Rottnest Island, alongside the occasional breaksea cod. Hillarys and Ocean Reef still seem to be seeing more baldchin groper compared to the southern metropolitan locations. Reports of Spanish mackerel catches off Perth seem to be slowing, however, the sought-after pelagic could be a chance along the western edge of Three Mile Reef and within Cockburn Sound. The Sound's safe and accessible waters have squid on offer. Dolphinfish and tuna species are continuing to be reported at the FADs deployed off Perth as part of the State-wide FADs trial program.

Shore-based

Port Beach, Leighton, Grant Street, Floreat Drain, Trigg and Yanchep have been among the metro locations where tailor have taken metal slices and surface lures this week. North Mole and South Mole are both seeing more squid this week, while they're also a chance along Capo D'Orlando Drive. Mulloway have been reported at Canning Bridge and Narrows Bridge after dark, while big schools of tailor are also present at both locations. Blue swimmer crabs are being caught between the Old Swan Brewery and Point Resolution. The upper reaches of the Swan River are continuing to fish well for bream.
