G'day <>,

Sadly, this is my last State-wide Fishing Report, with Sedin Hasanovic to take the reins for the coming weeks.

From barramundi in the East Kimberley to mulloway along the south coast, it's been fantastic reporting on what's biting and where across WA.

For everyone that's supplied fantastic photos and fishing info, thank you.

If you've got any fishing photos to share, be sure to email them to sedin@recfishwest.org.au to potentially be featured in upcoming reports.

For anyone wanting to contribute to the weekly fishing report, photos reflecting Recfishwest's responsible fish handling practices will be given preference.

If you're fishing this weekend, good luck and stay safe!

Zach Relph

Catch of the Week!

Fly fishing wizard Angus Line, of Fly Fishing Outfitters, scored multiple giant herring on a recent adventure somewhere in WA's north. That's a fantastic GH and photo to match, Angus!  😎🔥

Broome catches
WE VIBBINNN'! Wade Clark with a very nice barramundi from the Fitzroy River on a vibe! ⚡⚡⚡

Boats

According to Broome fisher Jade Relph, more Spanish mackerel are beginning to be caught on the troll between Cable Beach and Quandong. Schools of mack tuna have also been spotted fairly often of late, with small metal slices and white bait-imitation lures retrieved at high speeds leading to catches. More sailfish are likely to be found offshore in the coming weeks, especially in waters out from Barred Creek and farther north off the peninsula. Red emperor and saddletail seaperch have been caught in 40m to 60m of water. Also, Broome Fishing Club will be hosting its annual Thready Shootout next weekend on 30 April and 1 May. Visit the club's website here for more information.

Shore-based

Parts of the Fitzroy River are continuing to fish very well for barramundi, with reports of the iconic northern species taking baits and surface lures this past week. Admittedly, persistence and patience is needed when searching for barra in the mighty Fitzroy at this time of the year, so be sure to identify bite times and fish those periods. See why the Fitzroy River is so important to Kimberley fishers on our YouTube. Barramundi have also been caught in the local creeks alongside mangrove jack, threadfin and bluenose salmon.
Exmouth catches
Young gun Bo Davies speared this coral trout after ducking beneath the surface off Exmouth. 👏

Boats

Black marlin and sailfish have been caught within the 200m line this week, while bigger blue marlin are a chance out wider. As always, Spanish mackerel have been caught on bibbed minnows and rigged garfish trolled along the edge of the west coast reef line. Red emperor and Rankin cod have been caught in depths leading up to 90m, while goldband snapper are being caught in 100m to 150m. Exmouth's King Reef is fishing well for golden trevally and cobia. Find the coordinates for King Reef here. Coral trout are a chance along the bombies in the Gulf.

Shore-based

Queenfish, trevally species and spangled emperor are taking lures at the west coast accesses. Bluebone can be targeted near the lighthouse and Mildura Wreck. There have been more queenfish caught at VLF Bay and along the Exmouth Gulf beaches. Exmouth Marina has seen plenty of mangrove jack. Squid can also be caught at the marina as well as Learmonth Jetty.

Geraldton catches

Boats

Small boat fishers are catching herring, whiting and pike inshore off Geraldton, while spearfishers have also found coral trout at reefs relatively close to shore. Baldchin groper and pink snapper have been caught at South West Bank by demersal fishers this week, while schools of tuna have also been nearby. For those heading out to the Abrolhos Islands, coral trout and baldchin groper have been caught fairly regularly. Big squid have also been found at the Abrolhos this week. Yellowfin tuna are a chance beyond the islands.

Shore-based

Tailor to about 60cm, and dart bycatch, have been caught at Tarcoola, Horrocks, Little Bay and Hutt River by beach fishers this week. Mulloway were caught at Seven Mile after dark across the long-weekend, while tailor were caught throughout the day. Bread-and-butter species, including yellowfin whiting and school whiting, have been difficult to target with seaweed causing disruptions along some of the coast closer to Geraldton.
Lancelin catches
John Scully was more than happy with this pink snapper from the sand while dronning near Lancelin.

Boats

The offshore fishing was on the quiet side over the Easter break. Although it is taking more time and effort, dhufish, pink snapper, baldchin groper and breaksea cod are a chance in a range of depths. In as little as 5m to 9m of water inshore, there's been a fantastic run of large pink snapper to 8kg on the chew. Skippy have been schooling along White Bank and the near shore reefs. Inside the bay, dinghy and kayak fishers have had most success with herring, along with a few squid, snook, skippy and tarwhine. Also, the WA Undersea Club is hosting the Glynn Dromey Memorial Spearfishing Competition at Lancelin next Saturday.

Shore-based

Drone fishers flying baits out between 70m and 150m from the shoreline are still reporting pink snapper catches, as shown by John Scully's recent catch, pictured above. The coast to both the north and south of Lancelin is fishing equally as good for pinkies, while rogue Sambos have also reportedly taken baits intended for snapper. Beach casters are catching tailor to 50cm, often through odd hours of the day. Holiday anglers found the herring schooled up and in easy casting range at Edwards Island Point. Murmurings of decent mulloway catches along the region's beaches are growing.

Scott’s Species – harlequin fish, the coral trout of the south

One of the most striking fish in WA waters, many people joke harlies are the coral trout of the south because of their amazing colouration, writes Western Angler editor Scott Coghlan. They have blue, yellow, red-orange and brown colours and can’t be mistaken for any other fish in the areas they are found. They also have some serious teeth, indicating the sort of serious predator they are. Read this full edition of Scott's Species here.

Esperance catches
Young gun Tyson 'TNT' Tietjens with his dream mulloway from a secret spot east of Esperance! 🔥🔥

Boats

Squid, herring and King George whiting have been keeping dinghy and small boat fishers entertained within 1.5km off the coast. Farther off shore, queen snapper, harlequin fish and breaksea cod have been found near the islands, while the occasional pink snapper has also been caught. Read more about the fishing Esperance offers on our 'I Love Fishing' website.

Shore-based

Fishing gutters east of Esperance recently, Tyson Tietjens landed what he's described as his "dream fish" — a BIG south coast mulloway. "It was was an absolute beast that measured 142cm," Tyson said. Tyson's catch comes as there have been reports of mulloway at Poison Creek, Cape Arid and Thomas River. Closer to town, the Esperance Jetty and Taylor Street Jetty are both producing herring and squid. Bandy Creek Boat Harbour has King George whiting and skippy on offer, while the occasional flathead has also been caught. Salmon Beach, Fourth Beach, Roses, Poison Creek and Thomas River have had schools of salmon.
Great Southern catches
All smiles! Liam Weeson was more than happy with this lovely queen snapper off Albany. 😁😁😁

Boats

Queen snapper have dominated most catches along the reefs off Albany, while they've also been caught in areas to the region's east. Harlequin fish and breaksea cod have also been found in a variety of depths off Albany, in addition to the occasional pink snapper. Like last week, King George whiting and squid are being caught by small boat fishers at Albany's inshore areas. If you want to learn more about fishing for squid, click here.

Shore-based

Salmon chasers keeping the sand between their toes are reporting schools at Lowlands, Cheynes, Bornholm, Shelleys, Sand Patch and Cables. If you're fishing for salmon, be sure to take part in the 2022 Salmon Slam for the chance to win a heap of awesome fishing prizes. Herring are continuing to fish well at most locations across the Great Southern, while skippy have been caught too. The King and Kalgan rivers both have plenty of bream on offer, albeit the majority of them aren't too large. A few impressive yellowfin whiting have been caught along the banks of the Wilson Inlet.

Lean Back Fishing's Brad Gaylard with a sensational salmon from last weekend. 🙌
South West catches
Squid! Young gun Max Foley has been reporting great numbers of squid in Geographe Bay this week.

Boats

Mulloway have been taken on jigs and baits off Cape Naturaliste in the evening this week, with Dunsborough fisher Corren Wakelam among fishers to land a silver ghost. Geographe Bay is producing plenty of squid, as shown by Max Foley pictured above, while small boat fishers are reporting plenty of herring and skippy once burley is introduced. The 20m to 30m depths off Dunsborough are producing King George whiting, while pink snapper have been reported at the Four Mile Reef, Eight Mile Reef and Dunsborough Artificial Reef. Find coordinates to the Dunsborough Artificial Reef here.

Young gun Toby Spence with a tremendous baldie from somwhere in the South West! 😬

Shore-based

Salmon numbers are slowly increasing along the South West, with fishers competing in the 2022 Salmon Slam catching the iconic southern sportfish at spots including Hamelin Bay, near Gas Bay and Bunker Bay over the long-weekend. Schools have also been spied by drones at Injidup, however, they've been beyond casting range most of the time. Bunbury's BP Beach is fishing well for herring and the occasional tailor, while whiting have been caught in good numbers between Buffalo and Myalup.

Salty Bones' Adam Ashdown with a lovely salmon from the recent long-weekend. 😎😎

The Collie River is fishing very well for black bream, as shown by Ryan King, pictured below. Those working small hardbody lures close to structure in between the river's Australind and Eaton stretch are having the most success, with reports of fish to an impressive 37cm. Soapy mulloway to about 60cm and plenty of tailor are also being found along this part of the river.

Ryan King didn't have to venture too far from home to enjoy ripper black bream fishing in the Collie River.
Mandurah and surrounds

Boats

Samson fish, including a couple that have been deemed unstoppable by fishers, have been a constant catch at the Mandurah Artificial Reef this week. These Sambos are charging straight towards the reef when hooked, meaning it is best to anchor away from the reef and create a decent burley trail. This method has also resulted in skippy and the occasional pink snapper at the structure. Want the coordinates? Click here! Kayakers in Warnbro Sound are picking up plenty of squid along the seagrass meadows, while pink snapper have been taking soft plastics too. Farther out off Rockingham, dhufish and breaksea cod have been caught between 30m and 50m. Mangles Bay Fishing Club's FADs are likely to still be holding dolphinfish. If you've got a FADs photo to share, send it to sedin@recfishwest.org.au for a chance to win monthly FADs photo prizes donated by Madfish Gear and Richter Lures.

Shore-based

The lads from Hill Bros Fishing are reporting salmon schools near Mandurah. Not to say they are associated with this year's salmon run, with salmon trout also caught near the Dawesville Cut this week. Bread-and-butter species, mostly herring, have been a staple at the region's jetties this week, while soapy mulloway have also been caught on a mixture of soft plastics and baits. Bigger mulloway to 1m have been reported after dark from the gutters at beaches including Tims Thicket and San Remo. The northern stretch of Preston Beach might also offer mulloway, while drone fishers are trying their luck for pink snapper.
Perth catches
Mulloway madness! Matt Di Carlo with a wonderful Swan River croaker. Awesome catch, Matt. 🙌

Boats

When conditions have been suitable, the metro fish aggregating devices (FADs) have been offering dolphinfish and tuna varieties. Pink snapper and baldchin groper have been caught on jigs and baits south-west of Rottnest, while more baldies are being found in the 30m to 50m depths off Hillarys, Ocean Reef and Mindarie. Cockburn Sound's safe and accessible waters have many squid on offer, while bread-and-butter species such as herring are also fishing well. Likewise, squid catches are improving along the seagrass beds off Fremantle.

What a catch! Richard Warren with a dhufish caught from his dinghy in just 9m of water, north of Perth.

Shore-based

Matt Di Carlo, pictured above, has been among mulloway fishers to enjoy mulloway success after dark in the Swan River this week. There have been reports of silver ghosts caught near Canning Bridge, Narrows Bridge and the Causeway. Anzac Day historically marks the start of the herring run along the metropolitan and South West beaches. A consistent stream of burley at many of the metropolitan beaches, to either the north or south, will likely result in a feed of herring. Reliable tailor haunts including South Beach, Cottesloe, Grant Street, Swanbourne Drain and Trigg are resulting in catches, albeit not consistent. A few bartail flathead have taken lures near Applecross this week, including one reported 50cm catch.
