Boats

The annual Thready Shootout was held by the Broome Fishing Club on the weekend with some great captures being recorded. Those who were fishing the right areas were pulling in fish upwards of 90cm making for an exciting competition. With the change of seasons beginning to occur, blue water has been coming into the region with reports of more sailfish in the area. Spanish mackerel and longtail tuna are being caught in many locations, although fishers have noted that sharks have been a big issue, with the only way to beat them being to fish overly heavy gear. Those fishing for demersal species have been doing well with saddletail and red emperor captures from the 40-50m depths.

Shore-based

Small queenfish and trevally are frequenting the new Broome jetty, while the barramundi fishing seems to have slowed recently with smaller sized fish being caught up in the fresh. Those fishing live baits have been more successful than those fishing lures and poppers. Bluenose salmon are still being captured from the shoreline of Cable Beach.
Exmouth catches
Lewis Blair had an awesome session off the beach using some fresh squid as bait, this spangled emperor couldn't resist to throw itself onto the line for it, Great work! 📷 Fishing in Western Australia

Boats

With some great weather, comes great fishing experiences! Exmouth has had a fair few billfish of the black and blue variety being caught. Plenty of sailfish and small tuna have been following larger schools of baitfish inside the Gulf. Spearfishers have done well on coral trout and Rankin cod towards Wilderness Island. Ruby snapper and eight-bar grouper have reported by those deep dropping in depths of 150m-plus. Spangled emperor have been found in the lagoons, while red emperor and Rankin cod have been caught towards Muiron and Serrurier Island. Those trolling behind the Ningaloo Reef have had great success on the Spanish Mackerel.

Shore-based

Plenty of bread and butter species have been on offer around the Exmouth Gulf including; squid, whiting and flathead. Mildura Wreck has been fishing well for large queenfish and the occasional GT. The Exmouth Marina has fished well for mangrove jack at night, with plenty of queenfish and small trevally also on offer. The good weather and tides have also given access to the lower parts of the gulf where mud crabs have been targeted successfully.

Kalbarri catches

Boats

The swell for those out on boats during the week hasn't played ball, however those who did go out to chase Spanish mackerel reported the best catches in front of Wagoe. This weekend is shaping up to be good for fishing with a few bait schools being reported recently. Demersal captures of Dhufish, red emperor and coral trout have been confirmed in the past few days as well.

Shore-based

The main spot to be for mulloway is Chinaman's and around the Sand Spit in front of the river mouth. Reports of mulloway in 15kg-plus size have been confirmed. Couple of big tailor as well around the cleaner parts of the water in front of the mouth as well and along Back Beach. If you're running really light gear, chopper tailor have been on the bite at Wittecarra Beach. With the clearer water also comes great fishing for whiting around the river and near the sand spit. Dart have also been caught around Wittecarra Beach.
Geraldton catches
Ben Svenson loves a tailor fight on the light gear! Great work, mate!

Boats

Geraldton has been hit with some pretty poor weather, reducing the number of fishers heading out with boats. Those who have found small gaps in the weather and stayed close have been getting a few squid around Point Moore and in Grey Bay. A few Spanish Mackies have been landed however, they've been quite patchy and hard to pin down. Interestingly, a fisher off Point Moore reported multiple catches of really nice diamond trevally and a few skippy too.

Shore-based

Due to the weather and amount of surge and seaweed around Geraldton, shore-based fishing has also been hard-going. Mulloway fishing has slowed down with line getting caught in sea-weed and conditions not being optimal. The fishing has been better north of Coronations with relatively clearer water allowing fishers to enjoy catches of tailor and a few other bread-and-butter species.
Lancelin catches
Tailored Treks Fishing's, Peter Fullarton had an awesome morning on the kayak with a few pilchards and managed to get some great fishing action and landed a nice pinkie not too far off shore. Click here to check it out!

Boats

Lancelin angling club hosted a few comps over the weekend. The Anzac cup for the anglers Saturday and the Glynn Dromey spearfishing competition was held on Sunday. Both comps showed there are good numbers of healthy sized baldchin about. The spearfishers have been getting a few good Spanish mackerel and yellowtail kingfish, while the anglers got onto a few gummy and whiskery sharks from deeper water. Dhufish have been relatively patchy. Recent swells have brought the pink snapper in close to the beach with some good catches coming from small boats and kayaks within a few 100m of the shore. Bay fishers have been catching herring, skippy, tarwhine, snook, yellowfin whiting and some good size flathead from the shallows.

Shore-based

There has been some good size tailor along the beaches some in excess of 50cm. Only two fish are allowed to be kept over 50 and they are full of roe ready to spawn, with many fishers choosing to release these fish. There still a few mulloway being landed along the regions beaches. Drone fishers are having a dream run this season on the pink snapper,  reporting good catches of fish from both north and south of town. The weather is looking glorious for the coming weekends fun, offshore winds and low swell should see plenty of fish hitting the sand!

Richter Lure x Mad Fish FADs photo competition winner

Picture: Matthew Blackwell and his Son, Bodie Blackwell with dolphinfish caught on the light gear.
A father-son tag team duo Matthew and Bodie Blackwell (aged 10) have taken out this month’s Richer Lures and Madfish Gear prize pack 🏆 with this fantastic photo showcasing the fun that families can experience out at the FADs.

Sponsored by our FADs partners Richter Lures and Madfish Gear, this competition plays an important role in gathering photographic evidence of the FADs fishing success which will help ensure that the program continues into the future.

“I think the FADs program is excellent, I believe it’s a great initiative for many reasons…” Matthew explained.

“The FADs provide a targeted location for people to try their arm for game fishing.” 🎣

“And it brings an enormous amount of joy to our family, and my son who wants to always go back out to them”. 😁

If you're fishing any of the FADs locations across WA in the coming weeks, please send your entries to Sedin@recfishwest.org.au for a chance to win the next round, set to be announced at the end of this month.

Esperance catches

Boats

The weather has turned in the region to the nice autumn trend with light northerly winds and low swell days allowing a lot of fishers to get out and wet a line. Punters making the most of this weather have been rewarded with great offshore captures of nannygai, samson fish and large breaksea cod up to 2.5-3kg. Those who went the extra mile and fished the shelf were hooking up to hapuka, big blue eye trevalla and nannygai. Small boat fishers inside the bay have also been successful with good captures of king George whiting, skippy, herring and squid.

Shore-based

Estuary fishing has been firing lately, with the large sized bream being more active and taking hard body lures and soft plastics. Fish exceeding 1.2kg, in the mid-to-high 40cm size range have been caught. The Esperance jetty has been fishing well for squid, with hoods up to 40cm being pulled from the area.
Great Southern catches
Winner of the Random Junior Prize category: Charlie Emanuele and his brother Julian got these solid south coast salmon while on their families annual pilgraimage to Albany!

Boats

When the weather has been playing ball for the fishers to head out wide, they've managed to deep drop for species such as hapuka. Moving inwards to the inshore grounds have yielded some good sized dhufish, while the deeper waters have produced pink snapper for some fishers. Bluefin tuna catches have slowed down compared to previous year, however a smaller models have been caught.

Southern Ocean Spectacular

If you’re a south coast fisher, be sure to take part in the Southern Ocean Spectacular this weekend. The Albany Boating and Fishing Club is hosting the comp and inviting fishers to take part and wet a line this Saturday, 7 May. With many great species to be targeted, the Southern Ocean Spectacular definitely highlights the importance of fishing to the south coast community. Fishing tournaments such as the Spectacular play a major role in the recfishing community calendar, providing a great social and economic benefit to regional towns across WA. Find out more information here.

Shore-based

With the salmon season in full swing, catches have been plentiful along beaches with nice gutters, Lowlands, Shelly and Cable Beach being some of the more consistent spots. A few whaler sharks have also been spotted following salmon schools. Squid numbers have improved, with the rock walls around the Whaling Station in Albany and the rocks surround Goode Beach. Experienced rock fishers have been reporting good catches of yellowtail kingfish from the nearby ledges around town.
If you are fishing from the rocks, make sure to take all the safety precautions and check out our fish and survive website for safety tips!

Boats

The south-west has had a healthy amount of squid lately, especially around Busselton in the 10-15m of water. A few have also been caught closer in-shore. Pink snapper have been in good numbers along reefs in the 15-18m range. Off near the Capes, salmon have been caught, however they've been a little patchy this week. Plenty of herring are being caught by fishers off the Geographe Bay Yacht Club in kayaks and tinnies. Dhufish have been found out deeper in the 40-50m depths.

Trudy Morehouse, aka The Squid Queen decided to put down the squid jigs and chase some demersal fish like this pan-sized pinkie.

King George whiting have been in relatively good numbers off Bunbury in the 20-25m mark. When the weather was good, a few people heading out of August picked up salmon, gummy shark and the odd Samson fish.

Shore-based

A few drone fishers have been successfully landing pink snapper off beaches such as Hamelin Bay, Deepdene and Cosy Corner. Boranup and Hamelin Bay have been getting a few schools of salmon coming in close resulting in some good action on the lures! Further north, Busselton has seen tailor, herring and flathead caught off the beaches and a few squid of the Busselton jetty. There have been confirmed reports recently of salmon around the Bunbury Cut and a few being caught in the gutters around Buffalo and Belvidere Beach.
Mandurah and surrounds

Boats

A few fishers have been reporting success on the pinkies off Mandurah, one such fisho, Colum Venn, nailed a 97cm snapper while trolling using a Nomad lure! Those who went straight west from the mouth in around 30-35m depth found some nice ground and were rewarded with a pink snapper and the odd dhufish. 45-55m depth's out much further had more consistent captures of dhufish. Those looking to target King George whiting have been having success out in front of Safety Bay and with the odd bycatch of snook. The Sisters have been producing solid tailor, salmon and King George whiting.

Shore-based

South of Preston beach a few fishers were attempting to drop a few mulies and whitebait for salmon, however, they were instead suprised by large bull herring and had caught their limit within two hours. Reports of tailor have been confirmed around 30-50cm fish around Preston and Tim's Thicket beach. The estuaries are running hot at the moment with black bream biting well in the Murray and the Serpentine Rivers. Prawns are also starting to move. Also there have been tarwhine, tailor, herring, whiting and skippy caught. The Cut has been producing some nice salmon from the Ocean end.
Perth catches
🥈👻 Burak Erdogan putting in the hours under the Narrows Bridge for this silver ghost. Great work, mate!

Boats

Those who use side scan have been doing well up and down the river for mulloway. The usual bread and butter species such as King George whiting have been captured off the usual spots such as Parmelia Bank and The Windmills. Dhufish off Hillary's have been caught around 40-50m depths and a few pink snapper have been landed along Three Mile Reef. Water has been a little dirty for squid however there has been reports of people in small tinnies and kayakers getting the cephalopods off Pinnaroo point on top of seagrass patches.

Shore-based

With the swell up last week, many fishers had some great luck catching pink snapper shore-based with the swell being 2m+ and around reefy structure or rock-walls, fishers have been having more success NOR. With the tide and swell being right down, many fishers have packed the light gear and reef boots and have decided to chase herring and tailor on small metals and stickbait's on the beaches between Hillary's marina and Trigg beach. E-shed has been producing multiple varieties of whiting and flathead when running small sabiki rigs. The Narrows has been hunting well for mulloway showcased above with Burak Erdogan's capture, a few other more secretive spots have also been producing mulloway in the upper reaches of Swan-Canning estuary. Just north of Two Rocks the tailor have been much bigger, so if you have access to a 4x4 that's a good option.
