G'day <>,

When the weather gets tough, the tough get fishing. With the wet weather last weekend pushing in the seaweed, strong swells and wind, those who went fishing had great success landing pink snapper land-based from the local beaches.

An increasingly popular activity in the metro - land-based fishing for pink snapper has become an art form, with various different tactics for different situations. If you want to try your luck at landing the highly sought-after land-based pinkie, check out this article here!

For anyone wanting to contribute to the weekly fishing report, photos reflecting Recfishwest's responsible fish handling practices will be given preference.

If you're heading out this weekend for a fish, I wish you the best and stay safe!

⚠️ Dangerous Rock Fishing Conditions (From Exmouth to Bremer Bay) ⚠️

The Bureau of Meteorology have forecast conditions potentially dangerous for rock fishing - Sunday evening, a west to southwesterly swell of 3.5-4.5m arrives along the west coast, initially impacting Cape Naturaliste and Cape Leeuwin, before spreading up the west coast as far north as Exmouth, and around the southwest coast to Bremer Bay during Monday morning.

The swell will ease below 3m from Tuesday morning in the southern areas, before easing below 3m along the west coast by Wednesday morning. For tips on staying safe visit our Fish and Survive website here.
Broome catches
Got a "permit" for that one mate? Graeme Walker caught this one as by-catch while fishing for bluebone north of Broome, on Cable Beach.

Boats

The Bay has been producing some great fishing for those up at Broome, with threadfin salmon being one of those species consistently caught this past week. Barramundi fishing has slowed down, however, a few have been landed by fishers in their secret spots. Spanish mackerel have been quite elusive, making locating them half the battle. Reports of golden trevally and cobia have also been also mentioned around town. There's been a few schools of baitfish in the Bay coinciding with people who have caught longtail tuna last week, however there's been no reports of sailfish just yet.

💥, the bluebone gets sniped. Tim Mitchell got back into the water with a bang and landed this quality fish. Great work, mate!

Shore-based

Threadfin salmon to a metre, and the odd bigger fish, are being caught within Roebuck Bay and the local creeks together with smaller bluenose salmon. The rocks at Gantheaume Point have been good for bluebone, coral trout, estuary cod and the odd Spanish mackerel. Queenfish, varieties of trevally and bluebone have been coming from the jetty as well.
Exmouth catches
Weighing down the scales at 8kg, ⚖️ Cameron Beaton caught this red emperor fishing off Exmouth. Fantastic, mate!

Boats

Weather has been great this past week for those fishing around Exmouth allowing fishers to target plenty of different species. Spanish mackerel have been caught on the outside of the reef on the West Side, with a few fishers catching more consistently when they travel farther north from Tantabiddi. Sailfish and small black marlin continue to be caught between the 100m and 200m contours. Dolphinfish and schools of yellowfin tuna have been encountered offshore. Red emperor and Rankin cod are mostly being found in 50m to 70m of water.

Kyle Poole aka the Salty Horse with a Spanish mackerel off Exmouth, fantastic effort!

Shore-based

Mangrove jack to 50cm, estuary cod and yellowfin bream have been caught on baits and lures in the creeks located in the lower reaches of the Exmouth Gulf. The marina has also been producing mangrove jack, along with queenfish, trevally and flathead. Squid have been in good numbers around the Gulf and off the Learmonth jetty. Those who were fishing the various beaches on the West Side have had some great success on spangled emperor. VLF Bay has continued to produce great fishing experiences with queenfish and trevally keeping the land-based enthusiasts happy.

Kalbarri catches
Further north of Kalbarri, Maddi Miller caught her first ever Rankin cod, safe to say she was absoluted stoked with her capture! 📷 Northern Addicts

Boats

Offshore fishing has been largely dependent on the weather and swell, however, good numbers of Spanish mackerel are being caught both sides of the town, taking both fast trolled lures and rigged baits. Freshly rigged garfish baits are a good pick as they tend to get the bites even when the fish are a bit on the fussy side. Pink snapper are being found a bit further offshore while baldchin groper are being caught in closer along the cliffs north of town.

Shore-based

Tailor catches continue to fire from Wittecarra Creek to Red Bluff, however, as mentioned last week these fish are on the smaller side. The sheltered waters of the Murchison River banks have provided fishers access to bream and yellowfin whiting, while storm garfish have also been caught in good numbers south of town. These garfish make for excellent baits for mackerel and larger tailor which are found patrolling the many reef systems in the area.
Geraldton catches

Boats

Geraldton fishing has been a little quiet, however, a few reports of boaties heading north off Drummonds have had some luck. Those fishing in the 20-40m depths have caught dhufish in the 60-70cm range and pan-sized pinkies around 50cm. Squid fishing has slowed down a little, those who have had luck hit the inside of the reef around Southgates and Point Moore.

Shore-based

Similar to the boaties, weather has caused fishing to be a little slow. Those who hit the north end of West Bank have had tailor on the end of their line in the 40-55cm range during the day. Many fishers packed up once night hit however due to seaweed. Farther south a few good captures around Port Denison have been reported - Samson fish off the rock wall, tailor through the harbour and skippy in the 25-35cm range providing some great fun on the light gear. There's been a few black bream around the pylons, though not in great numbers nor sizes. A few who were fishing the Chapman River have had success landing black bream in the 30cm ranges on the blade lures.
Lancelin catches

Boats

Boating activity has recently been very limited due to swell and passing storms making the beach launching and safe passage leaving the bay difficult. Smaller boats did take advantage of some calmer periods to fish within the bay finding that the squid, skippy and herring were on the bite.

Shore-based

Lancelin jetty has provided access for the shore anglers to get some squid, crabs, herring and tailor through the week. The bays beaches have been fishing well for herring, sand and yellowfin whiting, while cobbler have been in the shallows at night. The surf beaches have had a lot of seaweed, though with a little searching there are still places to get a line out. Sand whiting have been a great size. Several anglers have also been able to convert fresh sand whiting baits to tailor and mulloway with several fish in the 10-15kg range landed this week.

Esperance catches

Boats

There's been a few great gaps in the bad weather this past week, with plenty of boats heading out wide reporting some great catches such as hapuka and blue-eye trevalla. There have also been reports of huge nannygai being caught in depths up to 170m, with some cracking the 60cm mark. In a little closer in the 40-80m depths, those who fished the flats on top of the lumps have been rewarded with nannygai to 55cm and some big Samson fish up to 35kg. Breaksea cod in the 2.5-3kg range have also been in caught in that general depth. In close, Charlie and Cull Island have been producing the goods for fishers with catches of harlequin. Around Lovers Cove, King George whiting have been prolific.

Shore-based

Colder temperatures have been great for squidding around Esperance, with the town jetty being a great spot to catch a feed. At night time, the jetty has also been producing garfish and herring. Around Fourth Beach, sand whiting have been prolific with the odd salmon being caught as well out towards the west side of Esperance. Bream fishing has been a good option as well this week, with Stokes inlet being the highlight spot and captures of 30-35cm being not uncommon.
Great Southern catches
With winter setting in and the water temperature starting to drop, the squid on the south coast are firing up – as shown by Jake Poad with this impressive cephalo-’poad’. Solid effort!

Boats

Large swell earlier in the week did keep most boats within King George Sound, where they found plenty of squid and King George whiting. Around Bremer Bay, the town boat ramp is currently closed for maintenance, making options for offshore fishing very limited in the area. However, based on reports from previous years, bluefin tuna should be found relatively close to shore and well within the reach of small boat fishers.

Shore-based

Reports of salmon captures have slowed but its still well worth checking out some of the deeper beaches such as Shelley and Lowlands. Local jetties are also producing good numbers of herring and squid. The local river systems are continuing to produce bream and a few mulloway, but fishers have had to put in a fair bit of effort for these fish. Around Bremer Bay, there has been lots of bait in the bay with salmon schools hot on their tails. Plenty of plump herring have been caught from Back Beach, with squid also firing with the lower water temps. Small whalers have been caught along the more remote stretches of Reef and Fosters Beach. Bream have been fishing well out of the Cheynes Inlet out near Cape Riche.

A recent entry into the Salmon Slam 2022 phase 3 photo comp shows that salmon are still biting. Make sure you get your entries in to win some awesome prizes!
South West catches

Boats

Off Busselton, fishers have continued to enjoy great sessions of pink snapper in close with most people getting out to 5-10m depths in tinnies and having great success when the weather permitted. Around the Capes saw fishers get into large schools of salmon near by and put on a great session for those who spotted them. There's been continued reports of King George whiting in the 10-20m depths off Bunbury and squid have been a little slower in that region. Busselton however has been treating local boat owners with great squid sessions.

Shore-based

Australind fishers have had some good success targeting soapy mulloway in the local river system on lures and soft-plastics. The previous weeks weather and the upcoming weather will hopefully provide another good run of shore-based pink snapper captures off beaches around town - especially from Belivedere to Myalup Beach. Families and kids have had some great fun catching salmon trout near the floodgates in town.

The recent northerlies have helped fire up pinkie captures around Busselton and the nearby beaches. Salmon have still been around with captures around Yallingup, Bunker Bay, Eagle Bay and Point Piquet. The Busselton Jetty is still continuing to be stained with ink as squid captures are getting better and better.
Mandurah and surrounds

Mandurah

Good sized good tailor and mulloway have been caught from the northern beaches. San Remo, Singleton and Madora are some of the spots that are producing at both dawn and dusk. The southern beaches have been great for herring and whiting during the day with tailor being caught around early morning and evening. The Dawesville Cut is producing plenty of herring and good sized yellowfin whiting along with some big skippy. Tarwhine are being landed by anglers fishing in the middle sections of the Cut. Anglers fishing around Halls Head have been catching good numbers of herring and sand whiting. In the estuary, anglers are still managing to find some good tailor. Bream fishing is still a good option with bream enthusiasts landing some good fish upstream.

Secret Harbour / Port Kennedy / Rockingham / Safety Bay

The beaches around Port Kennedy and Secret Harbour have been very productive with some very good tailor along with some skippy and tarwhine being landed. Last weeks front that moved through Perth saw one angler catch a good sized snapper from the jetty. There have been several good salmon and herring caught from the beaches in the area as well.
Perth catches
A good storm plus a fresh piece of herring gives you this! Austin Prosser-Brightling landed himself a couple of proper pink snapper shore-based (no drone) somewhere north of the river.

Boats

After the run of harsh weather, those who got out this past week have been rewarded with plenty of pink snapper out of Hillarys, Mindarie and Two Rocks. Dhufish and baldchin reports have slowed down significantly. The dirty water has also brought in a few reports of Samson fish in the 15-20kg category off Two Rocks. Although the water has been dirty a few fishers have been having success on the natural squid jig colours reporting captures in the safe and accessible waters of Cockburn Sound.

NOTE: The metro FADs have been removed over the week. To stay updated check the Recfishwest app or visit the FADs webpage here.

Shore-based

Even though the weather was wet and windy, many fishers managed to get out to the beaches and rock walls and came back with the goods. Plenty of pink snapper, tailor and the odd mulloway have been landed off the beaches north of the river. Fishers who have been hitting up-stream around Riverton and Shelley have been doing great on black bream and flathead. Those who braved the storms in the morning have had great success casting lures around Trigg and North Beach for tailor, with chopper tailor taking some of the larger model stickbaits and poppers. Fishers have been reporting some great whiting captures on the sabiki rigs just north of Hillarys around Pinnaroo Point and Whitford’s beach. Great reports of herring off the rock walls around Two Rocks and Mindarie have also occurred.
