Pic of the Week!

Dhubite's Cameron Winsor pulled up this absolute horse of a bass groper, weighing the scales down to 50kg! Caught off the back of Rottnest in 350m depths, Cameron ran one of his Dhubite snelled deep drop rigs. Awesome work and a worthy pic of the week!

Broome catches
Jade Relph pulled up through the drive-through and ordered himself a BIG Mack. Measuring in 133cm that would have been an exciting hit on the stickbait.

Boats

The neap tides, combined with the calm conditions has allowed fishers to head offshore, where they've been able to land some sailfish and Spanish mackerel. Fishers who decided to get the jigging gear out were rewarded with some nice coral trout and few different varieties of emperors. There's been good numbers of bluenose salmon within the bay alongside a few, albeit, elusive threadfin salmon with fishers suggesting to look for bait schools in order to track them down. As the tides start to pick up, fishing for both blue and threadfin salmon should also start to improve in the coming days.

Shore-based

Plenty of small trevally and queenfish have been caught at the town jetty providing some great fun on the light gear. Whiting have been in great numbers along the beaches around town while bluenose salmon have been consistently caught along Cable Beach. As the water temperature in the local creeks start dropping, the barra fishing has also slowed down, however, there's still the odd barramundi being caught as a by-catch by those targeting bluenose salmon.

Long-time Recfishwest member, Mark Milazzo is usually shore-based, wading in southern waters for whiting and flatties, however he's decided to make a change in scenery. His hike at low tide across the Port Smith flats rewarded him with this beaut mangrove jack.
Exmouth catches
Rankin relatively high on the list of great fish to catch, Sophie Clarke managed to catch this 80cm specimen off Exmouth on a 6oz Big John's Jig at sunrise.

Boats

Good weather has finally come through the region allowing fishers to get out and target billfish and other oceanic speedsters such as wahoo. One lucky fisher even managed to tick off a marlin, sailfish, and wahoo all on fly, talk about bragging rights! A number of good-sized red emperor have been landed from various fishers in the region, with most fish captured in the 40-70m depth range. Out deeper, punters have been able to successfully target some big ruby snapper on jigs with a few goldband snapper in the mix too. Those ducking beneath the water were treated to good sized coral trout on the straight hook. Small boat fishers have been having success on spangled emperor surrounding the shallow reefs and lagoons on the west side and a few larger sized giant herring have been tempted from the gulf on small stickbaits in the Exmouth Gulf.

Prospecting for Rubys? Levi Zimmerle hit the full-send button on his tinnie and decided to go jigging in 360m off the coast near Coral Bay and caught this ripper ruby snapper. Good effort, mate!

Shore-based

The usual queenfish and smaller sized giant trevally have been captured from the shoreline from VLF bay to the west side.  Numbers of spangled emperor have also been captured from the shoreline along the westside, albeit they are on the smaller side. Reports of mangrove jack captures are still coming through with good numbers of squid still being captured around the Gulf and Learmonth jetty.

Kalbarri catches

Boats

Weather during the week has been quite difficult for boats to get out, however, last weekend saw some awesome pelagic action close to the river mouth. Wahoo, Spanish mackerel and varieties of tuna have all been caught with relative consistency. Fishers have had to go out deeper to catch demersals such as red emperor. A little closer in pink snapper have been fairly common. This weekend is looking good for a fish so hopefully we see a few great catches!

Shore-based

The River mouth has been great for shore based fishers in the region. Those fishing Oyster Reef have been landing tailor to 80cm. Mulloway are also being landed around Oyster Reef, Sand Spit, Chinaman Beach and the Jetty. Green mud crabs have been reported as well further up the river. Wittecarra and Red Bluff is producing good numbers of tailor and storm gardies.
Geraldton catches

Boats

North of town has been the highlight for fishers, north of Drummonds saw plenty of snapper caught and high numbers of dhufish in the 4-8kg range. Pelagic fishing has been a little quiet, however, the odd mackerel has been caught north of town in 16-18m of water. There's also been reports of large bait schools, though these schools have not been producing the usual pelagic action you'd normally expect.

Shore-based

Tailor have been quite scarce around town. Those fishers who ventured north of Coronations and south of Drummonds managed to find a few tailor though it has been hard-going. A fisher has been catching tailor to 60cm around the Greenough river mouth on small poppers and lures. Mulloway have also been caught around South Gates and Greenough in the 7-10kg mark. Point Moore has been producing good numbers of whiting although dealing with loose seaweed has been a nuisance.
Lancelin catches
The beaches have been great for fishers putting in the time and effort. Graeme Doodson managed to catch several nice mulloway and pink snapper in recent times from the local beaches.

Boats

Fishers managed to find some great weather between the passing fronts, experiencing glassy seas and plenty of fish on the bite. Snapper, skippy, Samson fish and dhufish have been caught from the inshore reef systems, while further offshore there have been plenty of baldchin groper. Schools of blue mackerel and pilchards have been found in huge numbers in 15-25m attracting Spanish and shark mackerel, while further offshore the bait schools have been more isolated but providing some big bust ups of yellowtail kingfish and yellowfin tuna.

Shore-based

Tailor have been very quiet in recent weeks, anglers were lucky to land 2-3 fish in a session. Early evening has seen a few mulloway and pink snapper landed. While the swells have been down, both cobbler and yellowfin whiting were found along the bay's shallows. The recent storm and high tides have caused a lot of beach erosion, leaving beaches very steep, soft and narrow; be careful if you are taking the 4x4 through and stick to the back-tracks.

Scott's Species: grey mackerel, the lesser known mackerel

Picture: grey mackerel nailing a stickbait in the Kimberley region.
A fish that intrigues Scott Coghlan, the grey mackerel is one of those fish that seem to divide the fishing community. Some people enjoy catching them from time-to-time but most almost always prefer catching it's narrow-barred brother (Spanish mackerel). Still, see what Scott Coghlan has to say in this weeks latest edition of Scott's Species!

Esperance catches

Boats

Squid have been firing lately on the South Coast and around Esperance. Sand whiting and snook have been found by those fishing close inshore in small boats. Out deeper, nannygai have been caught with fish up to 55cm. In waters around the 30-40m depths, breaksea cod have been on the bite while harlequin fish have been found around the 10m depth mark. Good numbers of smaller Samson fish and yellowtail kingfish are also being caught.

Shore-based

Both jetties in town have been producing fantastic squid, with several of them weighing over 1kg. Herring and garfish are also being caught in good numbers, especially at night. Smaller King George whiting and skippy have been reported at the Taylor St Jetty. Bandy Creek boat harbour has flathead, skippy and whiting on offer, while the bream lakes have been fishing well, with good water levels and bream up to 40cm being caught. The town's beaches have been producing the occasional salmon, along with plenty of bull herring and solid skippy. Roses is worth a flick if you want to target the larger specimens of skippy. 14 Mile and Thomas River are also fishing well for gummy sharks, while Alexander Bay had a large school of salmon present.

⚠️ Dangerous Rock Fishing Conditions (From Cape Leeuwin to Eucla) ⚠️

The Bureau of Meteorology have forecast conditions potentially dangerous for rock fishing - On Saturday, a cold front with a strong southerly wind will move eastwards along the southcoast. An increased south to southwesterly swell will follow the cold front on Sunday. 4-5m swells are expected initially from early Sunday morning along the Albany and southern Leeuwin coastlines. By early Sunday afternoon, the swell will be 6-7m with a more south-southwesterly direction reaching from Cape Leeuwin to Israelite Bay.

On Monday, the swell will move eastwards, easing below 3m around Cape Leeuwin initially during the afternoon, while increasing along the Eucla coastline to 5-6m. For tips on staying safe visit our Fish and Survive website here.
Great Southern catches
Recfishwest safety ambassador, Gido, has been pulling some very tasty fish recently such as this breaksea cod. Great stuff!

Boats

There have been intermittent patches of good weather during the week, allowing avid anglers to get out wide and fish the shelf with great numbers of nannygai and hapuka being captured. A bit closer inshore on the coral grounds, the usual pink snapper, dhufish and breaksea cod have been caught. Small boat anglers fishing the King George sound have recorded great numbers of squid coming in closer with the colder water moving in, and some great sized King George whiting in the mix too. One recent punter fishing out near Michaelmas island couldn’t escape the salmon schools, pulling in one after the other.

Shore-based

The squidding has also turned it on for shore-based anglers in the region with good numbers being recorded from areas such as Frenchman’s Bay, Mistaken Island and Cosy Corner. Reports of salmon captures are becoming less frequent, although patience and persistence is key as they are still being caught in the region at popular locations such as Cheyne’s beach. Recent rains have muddied the river systems with captures of bream and mulloway being on the quiet side.
South West catches
Must be hearing squid all the time 🦑 Trudy Morehouse aka the Squid Queen, has been on fire with the squid captures off the coast of Busselton.

Boats

The gap in the weather this past week allowed a few boats to get out for a fish along the South West. Fishers in Busselton had a great time catching pink snapper in close, and reports of decent Samson fish also not too far from shore. Although the water hasn't been perfect for squid, they've been in great numbers. Fishing off Bunbury has been much the same however, a few fishers have reported catching a variety of fish in depths of 30-50m off Stratham, Bunbury and Binningup including pink snapper and the odd breaksea cod.

Shore-based

The recent weather has made fishing off Busselton Jetty and absolute joy. Fishers were able to land pink snapper, herring and squid on a regular basis and once night came in those who stuck around were rewarded with some more elusive captures such as this mulloway caught by Daniel Liuto.

Daniel Liuto was one of the fishers who decided to stick around at night and was absolutely stoked when he managed to pull this mulloway up onto the jetty.

The Floodgates and the Cut in Bunbury has been excellent for people looking to target salmon still. The beaches from Buffalo to Belvedere Beach have been amazing for those fishing for pink snapper shore-based. There's been a few salmon kicking around the beaches from Meelup Beach all the way to Smiths Beach.
Mandurah and surrounds

Mandurah

Prawn and herring numbers are still plentiful in and around the estuaries. There's been a consistent amount of tailor and salmon being caught on the southern beaches. The Cut is still quite productive with salmon and tailor landed at the ocean end along with King George whiting. The estuary is also producing some good sized bream. There are still a few tailor being caught from the northern beaches but the main catches are mostly whiting and herring with an odd tarwhine. Skippy are starting to make their presence felt in this area as well.

Secret Harbour / Port Kennedy / Rockingham / Safety Bay

Mulloway are making a return to the Sound with some good fish being reported from the local jetties. Herring and some salmon are being caught from the Kwinana jetty and Tern Island. Reasonable sized whiting have also been taken. Anglers have been reporting good catches of tailor up to 50cm and the occasional mulloway to around 8kg on the beaches between Long Point and Secret Harbour.
Perth catches
Anthony Axcell took advantage of the great pink snapper weather and decided to stay out late. The persistence paid off, solid effort!

Boats

After the big storm last Tuesday, there's been a nice window for fishers to get out and chase some fish. Pink Snapper have been the big thing around the metro area lately with many captures being uploaded online. Those who went chasing them have usually had the most success launching off Mindarie and Ocean Reef and heading to 10-20m of water and good ground. Samson fish weighing in around 10-20kg have also been landed off Two Rocks. Dhufish, breaksea cod and baldchin groper have been caught in the 30-50m depths north-west of Rottnest Island, in addition to similar depths off Hillarys and Mindarie.

NOTE: The metro FADs have been removed over the week. To stay updated check the Recfishwest app or visit the FADs webpage here.

Shore-based

Pink snapper have been on fire lately with the weather being almost perfect for shore based fishing. Austin Brightling and Anthony Axcell have both had great success North of the River landing pink snapper on the beaches. The rock walls around Ocean Reef, North and South Mole, Hillarys, Mindarie and Two Rocks have all been great spots for pink snapper. A few mulloway were also landed around the Ocean Reef marina. Chopper tailor have been in great numbers around the Swan river system. E-shed has been great for whiting and herring with those running sabiki rigs.
