Broome catches

Boats

Pelagic action has been pretty consistent throughout the week with varieties of tuna being the most common catch. Longtail tuna and Spanish mackerel have been on the bite with most boats catching them quite close in, particularly since the weather hasn't really allowed boats to go out too far. Sailfish have been targeted quite a bit as well on rigged baits and trolling lures. When the weather had a chance to calm down a little, fishers had success targeting bluebone.

Shore-based

Broome jetty has been the highlight for shore-based fishers in the region with fishers catching trevally and queenfish. As barramundi fishing has slowed down significantly, fishers have hit up Cable Beach instead for giant threadfin and bluenose salmon. Whiting and dart have also been caught around Cable Beach as well. Gantheaume Point has been the spot to try and land a bluebone when the tides are right.
Exmouth catches
Bo Davies getting it done off the coast of Exmouth, managing to land this nice ruby snapper. Great work, mate!

Boats

Fishing for black marlin and sailfish has been great with most being caught within the 200m line. Those who went out targeting Spanish mackerel have had success on rigged gardies and deep diving lures on the West Side, near the reef line. Coral trout, bluebone and golden trevally have been found near shoals in 20m of water in the Exmouth Gulf. Exmouth's King Reef has been excellent for people looking to do a bit of fishing for golden trevally and coral trout as well, if you're looking for more information on how to fish these reefs click here!

Shore-based

The Exmouth Gulf has been an excellent option for those looking to get a good feed of nice sized whiting, especially at the bottom of the gulf. A few spots that have been popular with those using lures to target brassy trevally, golden trevally, small GTs and queenies have been VLF Bay, Old Bundegi and Learmonth Jetty. 14 Mile Beach and most of the West side have been great in recent time for spangled emperor on lures.

Scotts Spots: northern mulloway - here for a hard fight, not a long fight

Northern mulloway have plenty of power, largely due to their strong tail wrist

Also known as black jewfish, northern mulloway are one of those fish renowned for their fighting qualities - and with good reason! Scott Coghlan in this weeks Scott's Spots has plenty to say about them!

Kalbarri catches

Boats

When there's been nice gaps in the weather, such as earlier in the week, yellowfin tuna have been the highlight species for the town with plenty of action being reported to the north and south of town. Spanish mackerel and a few longtoms in between have been taking rigged garfish baits. Pink snapper have been in reasonable numbers throughout the week, with the rougher weather bringing the fish in closer. There's also been decent numbers of pearl perch, baldchin and dhufish north of town.

Shore-based

Mulloway fishing has quietened down with reduced catches in the river system, maybe when the weather decides to play ball, we'll see an increase in catches again. Tailor from the 40-55cm mark have been caught from Wittecarra Beach. A travelling couple reported some great catches of pink snapper from Red Bluff. Wagoe fishing has quietened back down, however, there's been good numbers of tailor being caught north of the beach.
Geraldton catches

Back next week!

With the recent storm fronts and rough weather, fishing has been extremely quiet this week. Tune in next week to check what's biting.
Lancelin catches
Chris Hartanto had some great success during the LAAC competition catching one of these solid pinkies.

Boats

Lancelin Angling and Aquatic Club held it’s Westralia Cup over the weekend - the weather was ordinary, but that didn’t stop the fish biting. Dhufish and baldchin dominated the demersal mix on the day. Pink snapper have been found in the 10-15m depths with some great sized fish among them. Samson fish have been patrolling the inshore reef systems. Squid fishers have been doing very well inside the bay where there has also been plenty of herring. To the north of Lancelin, large garfish have been taking baits intended for herring.

Shore-based

Lancelin jetty has been seeing a lot more squid landed during the day, while nights have been good to catch a few herring. Beaches have seen fewer numbers of pink snapper off the drone drops compared to previous weeks, but persistence can pay off. You don’t need a drone to get onto some quality fish either, as those casting baits of the local beaches  have been picking up mulloway mostly early evenings and sunrise. There have not been a lot of tailor along most of the beaches, though gutters have produced the goods with fish around the 50cm having been caught along the northern gutters and Wedge Island area.

Looking for a fishing activity? Winter bream fishing

Picture: Matt Denny with a solid black bream, notice how the lips turn blue, that's how you know you got a good one!
To most of us, winter means crisp, cold mornings, nights by the fire and the electric blanket. Well, to dedicated bream anglers it means the chance to chase that rare 2-kilo plus, trophy blue nose bream; a personal best any bream fisher would love to be able to say they have caught, and it’s not as rare as it sounds. Over the years 2-kilo plus bream during the winter season seem to be far more achievable than the same size in summer.

Esperance catches
Self-confessed KFC enthusiast Tyson 'TNT' Tietjens didn’t need 11 secret herbs and spices to tempt this solid bream.

Boats

Recent weather has made it difficult for fishers to get out wide, those who managed to wet a line have found nannygai, pink snapper and breaksea cod surrounding the islands. Great squid fishing continues in the region, with 40cm plus hoods and squid over 1kg being common captures. Those fishing for squid has also had great success on sand and king George whiting, with good numbers of skippy to 2kg. Smaller-sized Samson fish continue to be encountered across the board.

Lachy Warren has been having some great success out at Cape Le Grand and shows off one of his catches, this beaut breaksea cod.

Shore-based

Salmon have started to make their way back along the coast, with schools reported at fourth beach and Roses. A few tailor can also be found amongst the schools. The lakes continue to fish well with the bream turning it on in the region. Some big blue lips over 40cm have been caught with both soft plastics and bait producing great fish. As shown above Tyson managed to land quite a few in a hot session! Large numbers of squid continue to be caught from the town jetty and break walls, alongside herring and garfish. Smaller sized King George whiting, flounder and flathead are being caught at Bandy Creek.

Great Southern catches

Boats

Albany weather has not been kind to those fishing this week, keeping most boaties on land or restricting them to the calmer inshore waters of King George Sound. Squid and King George whiting have been caught by small boat fishers within the Sound. A few salmon have been cruising around and have been caught in the Sound, however, there were no schools spotted.

The Albany Boating and Fishing Club will be hosting the Southern Squid Spectacular this Saturday, June 11. With the great run of squid that the South Coast has been having, make sure to join in on the competition. To find out more about the event, check out their Facebook page here!

Shore-based

Squid have continued to be caught in great numbers around the local jetties and rockwalls. Salmon are still being caught alongside skippy and herring off a few of the beaches west of Albany. Cosy Corner, Lowlands and Back Beach have been working out well. With the swell being 2.5m plus over the past week and into this weekend, running heavier grapnels sinkers and a 12ft+ rod is key to get the line over the waves allowing fishers to target gummy sharks, salmon and skippy.
South West catches
Peter from Pj Fishing WA caught this great pink snapper while out with the family. Solid effort!

Boats

Plenty of smaller snapper have been caught out in Geographe Bay by small boat fishers. Closer in the bay, drifting in 8-15m of water over seagrass beds has been a productive method to get a good feed of squid. If there's a break in the weather, now is a great time to try a land a dhufish and head out a bit farther offshore to maximise your chances. Last weekend saw a bit of fishing action off Augusta with a few pinkies and dhufish landed, however, weather has made it a little rough-going.

Shore-based

Plenty of herring are being caught from the local beaches and jetties. The rotting weed along most of the beaches has been a good indicator for the locations that are fishing well for these little scrappers. If you're still looking to target salmon, the beaches from the west of the capes are probably your best bet. Busselton Jetty has been one of the safer locations to fish for snapper and mulloway during the storms. Those fishing for snapper from the beaches have caught some impressive fish up to 10kg.

Freshwater

Roger "Ram-Jet" Russell had a great day catching a few Redfin in the South-West, comprehensively outfishing his son nonetheless! Love ya work Rog!
Redfin perch are being caught in good numbers at Harvey Dam as well as the occasional Trout. Rivers in the South West continue to produce good sized perch, and reports also suggest that the trout fishing is starting to heat up as the temperature cools down and some of the smaller streams start flowing. Drakesbrook Weir is starting to produce better numbers of both brown and rainbow trout.
Mandurah and surrounds

Mandurah

A few salmon have been caught from the southern beaches. Recent heavy seas and swells have prevented a lot of fishing off the beaches. It has also created some interesting beach formations with some good holes and gutters forming. The beaches have been producing a number of small mulloway, a few big tailor and large herring during the day. The reef area south of White Hills has been consistently producing tailor in the morning. The Dawesville Cut is at its winter best and continues to produce excellent fishing, especially for herring. There have also been quite a few good sized King George whiting landed. There are some reports of several big tailor being caught late last week. Whiting are also being caught in numbers around the jetty on the northern side of the Cut. The estuary continues to produce herring, tarwhine and the odd skippy or two and yellowfin whiting around, particularly near the marina and the estuary entrance. Salmon are also being reported throughout the channel.

Anglers have found a few good tailor on the southern beaches especially when the breeze subsides. The local jetties also fished well late last week with herring and squid. Salmon and skippy are also being caught.
Perth catches
The Blackwell family decided to sneak out on a Monday afternoon and chase a few tuna. Bodie and his mate Hugh Tidbury had a great time out catching skipjack after skipjack. Pictured above is one of those tuna caught by Hugh, great work!

Boats

Good numbers of dhufish have been turning up in the 30-50m range, with some larger fish over 12kg being caught. Snapper catches have also been good in the same depths, although seem to be on the smaller side compared to recent weeks. Harlequin have been caught in the shallower grounds near Carnac and Rottnest. Captures of tuna and other warm water pelagics in the 30m range has slowed. Small boat fishers have enjoyed some great catches of sand whiting and squid, with some smaller sized flathead also in the mix.

Shore-based

Those who made the most of the long weekend and tried their luck for the elusive silver ghost were well rewarded, with multiple reports of some big land-based mulloway. Plenty of land-based snapper are still being caught both south and north of the river, with fishers having success from beaches droning out baits and fishing from popular rock walls. Catches of King George whiting are starting to increase throughout the metropolitan area, with those targeting herring and skippy welcoming the kidney-slappers. Some great captures of herring have been reported at Ocean Reef over the last week with most having success on tailor in the afternoon.
