Broome catches
Tripletail are turning up in great numbers close to Broome and they put up one hell of a fight. This thumper of a catch was courtesy of the crew from @reefchiefaustralia and they are most often caught near mooring buoys and structure such as reef or weed. They also love prawn baits!

Boats

Despite lighter winds, stormy conditions are still making it unpleasant for those heading offshore. But those finding the right window have been doing well on blue-lined emperor and coral trout, as well as northern bluefin tuna and the odd Spanish mackerel. Most boats are staying inside Roebuck Bay which is producing blue-nosed salmon and barramundi, especially around Crab Creek and the fingers which are holding plenty of baitfish. There are loads of threadfin salmon about too, but they have been skittish and rather difficult to hook up to. Trolled Nomad vibes and Jackall Squirrel hard-bodies have worked well as has sight-casting for blue-nosed salmon. Northern mulloway catches have slowed, but there are still tripletail being taken around the moorings on prawn baits and small vibes (as seen in the image above). Saturday until midday should see lighter winds but they are expected to pick up slightly into moderate south-westerlies on Sunday morning before dropping off again by midday.

Shore-based

Entrance Point remains the go-to for spot for smaller trevally and queenfish, but with bigger tides rolling in this weekend, the high water could throw up a few surprises. The Town Jetty had the same fare with metal slices such as the reliable Halco Twisty a good option. The fishing has been better at Gantheaume Point and if the wind is down over the weekend, the flat rocks there will be worth a try for queenfish, various trevally species and bluebone on the high tide. Barramundi catches are improving in the Fitzroy River with the area around Telegraph Pool worth targeting. For the best tips and gear for your fishing expedition, make sure you visit the helpful pros at Tackle World Broome for advice and they will provide details on spots with the best access for a flick.
Exmouth catches
Smiles like this are very common close to Exmouth when there are this many trevally doing the rounds! Great work to @_jednolan with this catch in the Gulf this week. Photo courtesy of @exmouth_fishing_adventures who saw plenty of other great species landed.

Boats

GAMEX got off to a great start, with 40-50 billfish landed in the first few days. They were mostly black marlin with the odd sailfish thrown in the mix, but blue marlin are about too in the deeper waters. The 60m depths have been a good starting point for billfish, though they have been taken from 30m to 1000m+ depths. Among the billfish are yellowfin and big-eye tuna, dolphinfish and the odd Spanish mackerel. Trolled skirts and garfish baits have been reliable for most of the pelagic species. GAMEX fishers are also targeting queenfish, trevally and spangled emperor, with a WA record claim pending for a spangled emperor in the 1kg line class coming from the western side. In the Gulf, King Reef is fishing well for Rankin cod and coral trout, along with plenty of cobia doing the rounds. There’s a variety of bottom species at the shoals with giant trevally, coral trout, Rankin cod, blue-lined emperor, spangled emperor and mangrove jack hitting jigs, stickbaits and soft plastics. Thankfully some lighter southerly winds are forecast this week, so make the most of the good conditions whether you're competing in GAMEX or not, just make sure you slap on the sunscreen!

Shore-based

At Learmonth Jetty and the surrounding beaches there have been plenty of squid, whiting, flathead and bream in good numbers. Off the jetty, queenfish and trevally are a chance. If the queenfish are around but not interested in the metal slices and stickbaits thrown at them, a live bait has been doing the trick. The marina has been reliable for bream, trevally and small cod, with the chance of a bigger fish always possible. Near the boat ramp at Bundegi, queenfish and a range of trevally species are biting throughout the day, with anglers keeping an eye out for bust-ups with the area full of baitfish. At the Lighthouse on the western side, clear patches between bommies are producing big dart, spangled emperor and bluebone. Queenfish and trevally have been taking lures there too. Tantabiddi also produced spangled emperor with blue-nosed salmon among them. Octopus has been the favoured bait for both species. Yardie and Wapet creeks had small bream and javelin fish. Big thanks to the crew from Tackle World Exmouth for their tips and the light southerly winds should stick around until at least Tuesday, ideal for land-based fishing.

Kalbarri catches

Boats

Pelagic activity has improved thankfully, with some good Spanish mackerel and yellowfin tuna and the odd bonito about in 20-25m depths. South of town has generally been more productive, with Wagoe one of the better spots for both species, while north of town the Sandpatch is also fishing well. A little work has been required to find the clearer water, but these conditions are better for producing more fish and the bait balls have been easier to find for the birds, meaning skippers have been honing in on these areas with lures and trolled skirts to good results. Drop netters in the Murchison River are catching blue swimmer and mud crabs, while further upstream there are plenty of small bream around close to the structure and in the deeper areas. The mornings at first light are still your best bet over the next week with the southerly winds getting grumpy around midday.

Shore-based

The Murchison River had plenty of variety. For starters there are chunky yellowfin whiting around the 25cm mark at the sand spit with prawns, squid and worms the best baits, while chopper tailor are still active at the marina jetty in the late afternoons. Bream fishers have added fingermark and javelin fish to their bags, with both species being caught in sizes around 35cm. Blue swimmer crabs and mud crabs have been caught by drop netters off the marina jetty. Big dart are also at Red Bluff, along with bull herring and some healthy tailor around 40cm. Wittecarra had the same species and is worth a try for mulloway in the evenings. Bigger tailor have come from Frustrations and Lucky Bay when conditions allow. A local who regularly targets mulloway at Wagoe hasn’t had much luck recently, but has been compensated with pink snapper around the 60-70cm mark. Big thanks to Dean from Kalbarri Sports and Dive for his tips as always and the stronger southerlies will kick into gear from midday throughout this week.
Geraldton catches

Boats

A few boats are targeting Spanish mackerel when conditions allow, but the results have been disappointing so far with choppy conditions offshore not helping. Once the wind drops and the water clarity improves, this will be a great time to get out and have a troll. It also makes spotting schools of bait easier for both the birds and yourself! Reports of Spanish mackerel that were caught have come from further north off Port Gregory and Horrocks. Around town, most boaties are staying inshore and targeting squid at Separation Point, Point Moore and St George’s, with catches and sizes varied. Throwing a few jigs over the side and letting the drift and rocking motion of the boat do the work for you has worked nicely. Blue swimmer crabs have also been a popular quarry, with the Batavia Coast Marina one of the better spots. Saturday morning looks okay with a slight drop in the southerly winds, but expect them to pick up by midday and continue through until later this week.

Shore-based

The marina at Dongara-Port Denison is holding a wide variety of species and fishing well at night. Blue swimmer crabs are there, but numbers are hot and cold with some nights firing and others quiet. There are plenty of yellowtail scad, some up to 30cm, along with a smorgasbord of other species such as juvenile pink snapper, black bream around 30cm, tarwhine, chopper tailor, pike to 40cm, fingermark, yellow-eye mullet and juvenile squid. On the north wall there are better-sized tailor and some whiting. At Glendinning Road, there are lots of dart up to 35cm and a few herring, but weed has been a problem. The reefs at Drummonds Cove had a few herring and there are tailor at the northern end. A group of anglers fishing at Sandalwood were thwarted by weed, but managed to find a few school mulloway and some decent tailor. Big thanks to Geraldton Sports Centre for their report and Saturday morning is looking like the best land-based fishing window for the next few days.
Lancelin catches
Lancelin's fishing guru Peter Fullarton @tailoredtreksfishing managed to find this solid pink snapper after dropping a bait a few hundred metres offshore with his drone. Plopping the baits close to the reefy ground has worked nicely, with any drops from 150-300m offshore producing decent land-based pinkies this week.

Boats

Jurien Bay's FADs are officially in the drink! Medium to large-sized boats now have access to four Fish Aggregating Devices around 40-50km west of Jurien Bay and it means hard-fighting sportfish such as dolphinfish, tuna and billfish will start aggregating around these devices, waiting to bend your rods and make your reels sing!

Find the coordinates of the Jurien Bay FADs here and don't forget – our FADs photo competition runs until May 1st and you could win some great prizes simply for taking a snap of your catch at any of WA's FADs and sending it to us! Can find all your FADs photo comp details here.

Trolling lures has started to yield some good results, with shark and school mackerel caught throughout the week across a wide range of depths. Tuna have been hit or miss, with some boats finding the schools one day and then none the next. Persistence is key and as long as you're trolling, you're in with a shot. Yellowtail kingfish have been surprising anglers venturing out of the bay, with many encountering schools along the 8-12m edge. Closer to shore inside the bay, the usual suspects of herring and snook have been easy to find and the squid numbers have picked up, with boats finding decent schools of the tasty cephalopods. The water clarity has been fantastic for the divers and an abundance of lobster have moved to the shallows, with potters getting some great catches of reds close to the reef. While the ban on the take of southern garfish remains, there has been an abundance of large specimens throughout the bay and along the local beaches. The great boating weather is continuing on Saturday with barely a breath of wind forecast albeit with a touch of rain, but the wind will spike heavily from Sunday through to at least Wednesday. Get out there while it's decent!

Shore-based

Lancelin jetty has been firing up in the evenings with some classic tailor runs at sunset, while herring have been coming in under the lights at night. Drop netting has also found some big blue swimmer crabs. Beach fishers have been getting onto plenty of tailor, with the fat autumn run of fish providing plenty of solid catches of fish over 50cm. Just a reminder of the bag limit of only two tailor over 50cm, so if you've got your limit of two fish, make sure any additional catches over 50cm go back in the drink to fight another day. The weather has been very favourable for the drone fishers who have been out in force, dropping baits 150-300m offshore and getting some great catches of pink snapper both north and south of town. Saturday is lining up for another great land-based window, but get in there quickly before the wind becomes very grumpy from Sunday through to at least Wednesday. Huge thanks to Peter Fullarton from Tailored Treks for his tips as always!

Esperance catches
Not the salmon @lachy_warren was after, but gummy sharks are always a welcome by-catch off the beaches in Esperance!

Boats

Nannygai continue to be caught in good numbers with a 60cm fish landed this week in the relatively shallow depth of 30m. Most nannygai this week have been caught in 40-80m depths though, with Charley Island the hotspot not just for nannygai, but also breaksea cod, harlequin fish and blue groper. Various tuna species have been taken there on the surface as well, with a range of stickbaits and trolled skirts working nicely. Smaller boats are doing well on sand whiting in the 30cm range in 17-20m depths off Fourth Beach, while squid have been turning up on the drift in close over the weed beds in 4-10m depths when the weather provides a decent window and water clarity is ideal. Saturday and Tuesday have lower southerly winds forecast albeit with some rain forecast over the next week.

Shore-based

Gummy sharks to 15kg have been taken off local beaches including Observatory, Thomas River, Tagon and Alexander Bay. And in other good news, football-field sized schools of salmon (yes, you read that correctly) are heading west and are close to shore, with Stockyards and Munglinup the pick of the beaches. Lures are the better option because of the time saved from rebaiting, allowing the schools to be followed along the beach. Big mulloway are about too, with Dunns Beach the best spot for them. In town, squid are still going strong at the Esperance Jetty with early mornings the best time. There are also plenty of big herring at the jetty and in the evenings garfish have been turning up under the lights. The Taylor Street Jetty had the same species but with skippy and King George whiting thrown in the mix. Bandy Creek produced bream around the pylons and a soft plastic fished from the drop-off on the outgoing tide will likely tempt flathead. Bigger flatties, some around 70cm, are turning up at Nine-Mile Beach. Wylie Bay is again offering a small-fish smorgasbord on the edge of the weed beds with flathead, tarwhine, herring, King George and sand whiting on the chew. Big thanks to the pros from Southern Sports and Tackle for their tips as always and Saturday or Tuesday currently look best for land-based fishing.
Great Southern catches
Gideon Mettam @gidos_fishing_adventures had one of the coolest fishing sessions you'll ever see on the south coast recently, catching yellowtail kingies, Samson fish like this beauty, breaksea cod, skippy and even a dhufish on fly! Check out Gido's latest video on YouTube here and make sure you give his page a like and subscribe!

Boats

Howling easterlies are making fishing extremely difficult with fishing for bream and mulloway in the King, Kalgan and Hay river systems really the only feasible options. Unfortunately, recent rains have stirred up the water there and slowed the fish activity. If weather windows do appear, squid and King George whiting in sheltered areas of King George Sound or at Frenchman Bay seem the best bets, while the Wilson Inlet is worth drop netting for blue swimmer crabs if conditions allow. Caseys also produced King George whiting, while boats that managed to reach coral ground pulled in red, pink and queen snapper, along with the occasional dhufish and Samson fish. Sunday arvo through to Wednesday should thankfully see a good drop in the wind, allowing for better boating windows.

Shore-based

If you enjoy your land-based fishing on the south coast, there is an important survey that we recommend filling in regarding vehicle beach access in the Shire of Ravensthorpe, this includes beaches at Hopetoun, Mason Bay and Starvation Bay. Given these areas provide great land-based fishing opportunities and may also be affected by the Government's proposed south coast marine park, your feedback on the survey link below will allow you to have your say to help protect these land-based fishing experiences in this region.

Click here to complete the Shire of Ravensthorpe Vehicle Access on Beaches Survey.

The town marina is worth a crack for herring, squid and bream. Leatherjackets and yellowtail scad are also plentiful there. Gull Rock has been consistent for herring and King George whiting, while Frenchman Bay has been reliable for squid, herring, small King George whiting and flathead. Ocean Beach has been a decent spot for yellowfin whiting, along with silver bream when the weather allows a flick. If you're chasing salmon, they have been spotted in great numbers off the beach at Salmon Holes, Fosters, Reef Beach and Limestone Head. Monday through to Wednesday is definitely looking like the next best land-based window. Big thanks to the crew from Trailblazers in Albany for their tips!

South West catches
It's been another very productive week for monster tailor in our South-West regions! These larger tailor make short work of herring, whiting and smaller chopper tailor with strong jaws and sharp teeth and will also give your rod and reel a major workout! Great snap and catch from @saltyfishos.

Boats

There have been heaps of Samson fish at Bouvard Reef in depths as shallow as 8m, while 20-30m depths had bigger Samson fish via jigging and a few tuna turning up when trolling skirts and flicking metal lures into bait balls. Squidding out from Bunbury has been very rewarding lately and herring have been plentiful when a good burley trail is present. Boaties drop netting in Bunbury’s outer harbour are still getting a feed of blue swimmer crabs and trolling around the Cut usually produces a few chopper tailor. For the best luck trolling for tailor, try and have one lure closer to the surface and another deeper diver that can reach 2-3m depths so you can target more of the water column. At Geographe Bay, squid are in good numbers along with King George whiting around the 25-40cm mark. This weekend will see moderate south-westerly winds making it a tad choppy, but the mornings are the best bet for boating windows.

Shore-based

Drone fishers have done well on pink snapper at Preston Beach, which also fished well for tailor, herring and whiting. The gutters there have been holding mulloway with strip baits fished at night proving successful. Myalup and Binningup beaches had plenty of herring, whiting, tailor, and mulloway after dark. Tailor and herring are also the mainstays at Back and Buffalo beaches and Abbey Beach is also worth a try for tailor. Whiting action has slowed in the Leschanault estuary, but Eco gear ZX vibes and soft plastics are still accounting for yellowfin whiting with flathead up to 40cm a welcome bycatch. The Collie River had small tailor and soapie mulloway with bream catches also improving. Prawns have been plentiful in the river system too and netters are getting a feed at night. At Busselton Jetty, squid catches have been flowing well and herring are plentiful in Geographe Bay. Big thanks to Whitey's Tackle for their tips and there will be a very low swell this week, with the calmer winds in the mornings.

Freshwater

Great colours, easy to catch and delicious on the plate. This lovely redfin perch was landed by talented fisher @blairhutton_fishing in one of the southern river systems via a @razor_edge_lures Grubson in bloodworm colour on a snagless hook (which does make a huge difference for reducing snags).
At Harvey Dam, trout activity has been very low and this is most likely due to the hotter days that rolled through this week, which can leave the trout feeling overheated and quite lazy in the shallows. There are however plenty of small redfin perch to compensate. The 5-8m depths are fishing best, with Zman soft plastic Grubz in natural colours such as motor oil proving effective. If the water is quite dirty, you want to use the darker colours as the fish spot this easier, while clearer water tends to see better results for the brighter plastic colours such as white, green or red. Most of the redfin across all of the dams at Harvey, Wellington and Drakesbrook Weir were around the 25-30cm mark and spinner lures have also worked nicely when cast off the banks into the deeper regions. Most of the trout caught this week came from the river systems further south, where soft plastics and vibes lured the fish out of the deeper, shadowed pockets of water. These areas tend to be cooler and the trout can dart out from the stagnant water and ambush bait moving with the river flow. If trolling the dams, try sticking closer to the banks (within 50m) and use vibes that can reach 2-3m depths as trout will often sit right on the edge of the drop off into deeper water and move up to strike the lures. If you catch any great trout or redfin, make sure you message us a snap of the catch to our Instagram page @recfishwest.
Mandurah and surrounds

Mandurah

The beaches at Singleton and San Remo fished well for tailor, herring and whiting this week, with mulloway a chance at night. Drone fishers are also catching pink snapper along this stretch. The sheltered beaches of Melros and Falcon still have yellowfin whiting but herring are often beating them to baits. Plenty of tailor and herring, along with the odd school mulloway, are being caught along the reefy stretch of coast from Tim’s Thicket to White Hills with a few pink snapper about for drone fishers. Boaties have been doing well inshore on squid, herring and a few King George whiting and the 10-15m depths off Seascapes has fished well for chunky sand whiting. Crayfishers dropping pots in 5m have also done well just out from the Cut, while divers are snaring jumbo crays at the Five-Fathom Bank. Tuna are also at the Five-Fathom Bank and they seem to be loving trolled skirts the most. Trolling in the Peel-Harvey estuary is producing tailor around the 35cm mark and drop netters are faring best on blue swimmer crabs in the system. Tailor and juvenile salmon have been caught on hard-bodied lures by anglers wading out to the estuary’s drop-offs, while the Cut and the Mandurah bridges are good for whiting, herring and tailor. Big thanks to Tackle World Miami for their chunky report as always!

SECRET HARBOUR / PORT KENNEDY / ROCKINGHAM / SAFETY BAY / WARNBRO SOUND

Anglers trolling at the southern FADs are doing well on dolphinfish and the odd wahoo. A few tuna are about as well. Live-baiting has also worked well for the bigger dolphinfish. The reefs at the back of Garden Island are producing Samson fish with yellowtail kingfish also a chance. Small yellowtail kingfish are schooling along the Garden Island causeway. Tailor over the one kilo mark are hitting lures and mulies cast into the reefy white-water at Coventry and Mewstones and surprise reports have come in of mulloway catches in Cockburn Sound. Cockburn and Warnbro sounds are also fishing reasonably well for squid, while a bit of burley will bring around herring and skippy in any of the inshore waters.

For land-based fishers, Challenger Beach, Secret Harbour and Woodman Point have been good for mulloway and chopper tailor with herring also among the choppers. There are tailor at Long Point and flathead, flounder, herring and a few whiting at the Penguin Island spit. The jetties at Rockingham and Palm Beach produced herring, chopper tailor and squid. Big thanks to Compleat Angler Rockingham for their great tips and both Saturday and Sunday look decent for all forms of fishing.
Perth catches
We saw a big spike in the number of yellowtail kingfish landed this week in metro waters, with this beefy fish landed by Blake Peters @blakepetersish. It's great to see this hard-fighting and fast-growing species being landed in solid numbers with help from the yellowtail kingfish metro stockings of recent years. There were 15,000 kingies stocked into Cockburn Sound back in February, you can check out footage of the yellowtail kingfish stocking cannon here on YouTube!

Boats

The FADs continue to fire with dolphinfish and tuna species being taken on skirted lures trolled at 6-8 knots and bigger dolphinfish caught on live baits. Tuna are also plentiful on the north side of Rottnest and have been smacking deeper diving lures and skirts. At the Three-Mile Reef, wahoo around the 15kg mark have also been hitting trolled deep-diving lures. Spanish mackerel were scarce, but several have been taken off Two Rocks. Plenty of solid skippy were hanging around Three-Mile Reef and Windmills is also fishing well for King George whiting of varied sizes, including the odd kidney-slapper around 60cm. Sand whiting are less plentiful but drifting over the broken weed and sand patches in close around Freo and Rockingham will produce the goods. In the Swan River, crabbing is becoming harder even in the deeper regions, but trolling for tailor and even giant herring continues to fire between Como and East Fremantle. Enjoy the glass off on Saturday morning but the winds will become difficult in the afternoon.

Send us pics of your FADs catches for some great prizes!

To celebrate the great fishing opportunities at the FADs across Western Australia (more to come at Mandurah, Albany and Lancelin soon), we're giving away some quality prizes thanks to Richter Lures and Madfish Gear simply for catching a fish at any of the devices between 1 March - 1 May and sending in a snap of your fish!

Shore-based

Scaly mackerel have moved into the Fremantle Harbour around the E-Shed and they are also at South Mole and around the Fishing Boat Harbour. Bait-chaser rigs were the most effective way to target them. Usually big schools of scalies suggest mulloway are about, but no catches have been reported so far. A few silver bream are among the scalies at E-Shed. South Mole fished well for squid, while early-morning lure casters at Bathers Beach are getting tailor up to 40cm. Further north around Trigg has been producing tailor to 50cm.
Tailor are active in the Swan River too, with fish in the high 30cm range taken between the Fremantle bridges and Point Walter, while fishers on the sand flats that are prepared to cover some ground are catching flathead at East and North Fremantle, Mosman Bay, Freshwater Bay and Point Walter. The flats at Burswood are also worth a go for giant herring. Up river is fishing well for flathead and bream, while anglers casting lures such as Bassday Suga Pens and OSP Bent Minnows on the Canning River flats have landed some very nice 35-40cm bream. Big thanks to Anglers Fishing World in Fremantle and Hillarys Boat & Tackle for their great tips and Saturday morning looks great for land-based fishing, but Monday to Wednesday morning might have stronger easterly winds to aid in casting off the beach.
