Fishing Report
05/05/23
A perfect example of the sportfishing action that can be looming right next to large bait balls. Striped marlin tend to appear further offshore and will frequently be spotted harassing large bait schools, darting in with incredible speed and picking off fish one at a time.

Broome catches
He'll remember this one! Great to see @matt__maguire and this little lad stretched their arms recently fighting solid Spanish mackies out from Gantheaume Point in Broome this week.

Boats

Good conditions have enticed many fishers to head out wide and they have been rewarded with bluebone, black snapper, spangled emperor and coral trout. Better catches have come from about 15km out, in depths around 25m, with strip baits, lures and jigs working well.  School mackerel also have been active along with a few smaller Spanish mackies, with both species being caught in varied depths. Diving seabirds have also proved to be a reliable indicator, so keep an eye out for them. Dampier Creek and Roebuck Bay have been fishing well for barramundi along with blue and threadfin salmon with trolled vibe lures working well. Mud crabs have come from Dampier Creek and northern mulloway have been caught on fillet baits fished near the ledges in the bay. Trolling along the drop-off at Gantheaume Point has produced the odd Spanish mackerel too. The easterly winds will pick up from Sunday and carry through until Wednesday, so Saturday is looking best for the boaties.

Shore-based

Around Entrance Point and the Broome Jetty, queenfish and trevally have been hitting chrome lures, while bluebone have been caught on baits fished on the bottom. The Town Jetty produced queenfish and trevally too, along with a few bream. The Shire has started to open roads around town allowing access to Crab Creek, where barramundi and blue and threadfin salmon have been caught. Willie Creek, has also held the same species plus mangrove jack, cod and flathead. Whiting have been the main catch at Cable Beach while at Gantheaume Point floating out a bait under a balloon could produce a Spanish mackerel. There have been good threadfin catches at 80 Mile Beach with fish in the 60-70cm range landed, and in the Fitzroy River barramundi fishing has improved as the water starts to clear. For the best tips and gear for your fishing expedition, make sure you visit the helpful pros at Tackle World Broome for advice and they will provide details on spots with the best access for a flick.
Exmouth catches
Recfishwest's Board Chairman Liam Surridge not only catches stunning fish across WA, but 99% of those catches are usually on fly! This lovely trevally landed in Exmouth this week certainly put his reel to the test.

Boats

Inshore fishing for billfish close to Exmouth is improving with sailfish and black marlin being caught in depths from 50-300m on the west side. Smaller profile skirt lures have worked well. Sharks have made bottom fishing very difficult out west, but in the lagoon and inside the reef there have been quite a few spangled emperor and plenty of squid. Trolling along the reef line has produced a few Spanish mackerel with the Spaniards expected to become more active when water temperatures start to fall. In the Gulf, golden trevally have been around the shoals in 10-15m depths along with the odd cobia. The middle and bottom areas of the Gulf have fished well for tuna and school mackerel while squid have been plentiful along the weed beds right in front of Exmouth town. This weekend should have great boating conditions with a bit of a midday spike in the wind on Sunday.

Shore-based

If you’re a land-based fisher in Exmouth, plenty of bait balls in close saw queenfish dominate land-based captures this week with fish of all sizes smashing stickbaits and twisties anywhere from Learmonth right around to Tantabiddi. Squid have also been plentiful with Learmonth Jetty one of the better spots. Deep down in the Gulf fly-fishers have tangled with giant herring. At the town marina mangrove jack have dominated catches with fish around the 40cm mark regularly being landed along with bream and trevally and emperor species. Whiting activity is picking up along the town beaches while stickbaits, soft plastics and fillet baits have accounted for spangled emperor around the Lighthouse and Mildura Wreck. Should be pleasant conditions in Exmouth this week so make sure you get out there. Big thanks to the crew from Tackle World Exmouth for their tips as always!

Kalbarri catches
@nickihuntfishing made the most of the pink snapper up north recently and highly recommends using fresh squid when chasing pinkies. The fresher the better!

Boats

Pink snapper have dominated catches north and south of town with depths around the 15m mark a good starting point for them. Baldchin and dhufish have been relatively scarce, but a few cod have been landed. Charter boats going out wide have also landed plenty of pink snapper in depths greater than 60m. Spanish mackerel have also been caught in 15-20m depths with waters north of Sand Patch the pick of the spots. Spanish mackerel have also been caught by boaties trolling along the cliffs at Rainbow Valley and Pot Alley Gorge, while a few have been taken in much deeper depths out wide. Should be great conditions for boating until at least Wednesday morning.

Shore-based

Earlier this week a good-sized pink snapper was landed at Red Bluff, which has also been fishing well for tailor, herring and whiting. Chopper tailor and herring have also been plentiful at Wittecarra, especially in the mornings. In the Murchison River mulloway activity has been steady with fish around the 15kg mark being landed in the mornings and evenings from the Sand Spit and further up river around the jetty. Mulies, scalies, fish fillets and squid have been the preferred baits. The jetty area has also been holding bream around the 30cm mark. Good numbers of yellowfin whiting have been caught around the Sand Spit and mud crabs have shown up at the bottom end of the river. At the river mouth there have been herring, a few cod and some chopper tailor. Sunday is looking perfect for land-based fishing with low easterly winds. Big thanks to Dean from Kalbarri Sports and Dive for his tips as always!
Geraldton catches
Following Recfishwest’s constructive discussions with the Fisheries Minister and the bag limit for popular large pelagic species like mackerel and tuna thankfully reinstated back to three fish around the Abrolhos Islands, we're glad to see fishers like Ash Ramm from @tackle_world_miami made the most of it this week!

Boats

Around Geraldton and Dongara, dhufish have moved in to the 9-13m depths. They are not in great numbers but sizes are good, around 10-15kg. Further out, especially south-west of Port Denison, dhufish have been scarce but red throat, baldchin groper and a few coral trout have been saving the day. Pelagic fishing has been quiet but reports of Spanish mackerel catches have filtered in from the Abrolhos Islands. Dinghy fishers have been doing well on squid in various sizes with Southgates, Separation Point, Point Moore and St George’s the better spots. The same locations have been fishing well for whiting. It should be a howling easterly tomorrow morning, then should drop off into north-easterly winds from midday Saturday through to Sunday.

Shore-based

Whiting fishers are doing better than their boating counterparts when they can escape the weed. Whiting up to 35cm, but mostly 20-30cm, have come from Separation Point, the back of Point Moore, Pages Beach and at Drummonds, heading up to the Buller River mouth. Mulloway action picked up last week with fish from 7-12kg turning up from Buller River all the way down to Flat Rocks. There have been some hot mulloway sessions at Tarcoola and Drummonds, but not every day and some sessions can be completely scarce of fish. Reports of the odd tailor have come from Tarcoola and better fish from further south around Head Butts. Herring have been quieter and there have been been a few smaller dart arounds. Saturday morning should be great for land-based fishing with a strong easterly aiding with casting. Big thanks to Geraldton Sports Centre for their report as always!
Lancelin catches
There was a big spike in the number of silver slabs pulled in this week across the Mid-West coastline! Tim Farnell was one fisher who jumped on the surf casting action and plucked this beauty measuring over one metre from the surf close to Lancelin, with a strip of herring doing the trick.

Boats

Tuna have been difficult to find, although there have been a few mackerel around bait balls that have generally been schooling along the 15m contour. Lancelin Angling Club held the ANZAC cup on Saturday, with most boats landing a mix of snapper, breaksea cod, dhufish up to 14kg and baldchin groper up to 5kg. Despite sloppy conditions, Pat Shinnick headed west for a deep drop, easily taking out the comp by landing gemfish to 7kg and breaking two club records with blue eye trevalla and hapuka. Small dinghies and kayaks have been having a great time in the bay's crystal clear waters with plenty of skippy, snook, herring and squid on offer. Those howling easterly winds will stick around until Monday so brace yourselves for a rough and wet ride back home!

Shore-based

While the tailor have been quiet, mulloway, small whaler sharks and pink snapper have been the main game for the surf casters, with catches being wide spread along the regions beaches, most coming early evening. With some very strong easterly winds rolling through over the next few days, there should be a lot more drone and beach fishers dropping baits into the surf. There have been some good-sized sand whiting in casting range at the moment, while some spots have been producing tarwhine or herring as well. Big thanks to Lancelin's fishing guru Peter Fullarton for his tips and make sure you check out his Tailored Treks fishing tours if you want to be put on to the fish.

FISH HANDLING TIPS AND HOW TO TAKE PERFECT FISH PHOTOS!

Photo tip: If possible with very big fish catches, try to position them across your lap for quick photos as this is the best way to support the fish. Holding them vertically by the gills or tail can cause damage. If you have ever wondered how to take snaps of your catch that look best for social media while reducing damage to the fish, check out our page detailing the best fish handling and photography tips for when you're out fishing on the boat or land!

As soon as you land a fish on the boat or land, it’s important to treat the fish with care and minimise the duration of stress resulting from direct handling.

If you’re wanting to take a snap of your catch, it’s also important to have the camera ready to go as soon as possible, especially if you intend on releasing the species, to help minimise the risk of damage to the fish.

We all love showing off our catch, but you can do it by being more respectful to the fish as well as making your fish photos look much better to those who view them if you decide to share them across social media.

Check out some of the tips for taking great photos of your fish!

Esperance catches
The solid mulloway catches were red hot on the south coast this week too! @olistevensonn from Southern Sports and Tackle was another fisher soaking baits during the evening this week, landing this silver slab to continue his brilliant mulloway form.

Boats

Conditions haven’t been the best this week but tinny fishers have done well on squid in Esperance Bay, drifting in 4-7m depths. At Cull Island boaties have been tangling with Samson fish, which many locals rate very highly on the chew saying the cooler water temperatures and lack of parasites make them much tastier than Samson fish from metro waters. At Devil’s Rock there have been tuna species for those trolling skirted lures. The waters around Boxer and Figure of Eight Islands have also fished well for nannygai and breaksea cod in the 40m depths, while blue groper and harlequin fish have been caught there in 20m depths. Those stronger easterly winds should stick around this week but there will be brief windows on Sunday where it might swing around into a northerly.

Shore-based

At night, Alexander Bay has been consistent for gummy sharks up to 13kg along with quite a few school-sized mulloway, with the bite time from 10pm until midnight. In the daytime, Alexander Bay has held plenty of salmon, while at Thomas River there have been gummy sharks and bigger mulloway caught. At Dunns there have been big skippy, some up to 3.5kg, with plenty of salmon mixed in with them. The gutters at Stockyards beach have been holding flathead around the one kilo mark and plenty of big sand whiting and herring. Town Jetty has been fishing well for squid with green and pink jigs working the best. The jetty has also fished well for herring and garfish at night. The rock wall at Taylor Street Jetty has held big herring in the afternoons, usually when the grain ships are in port providing a free dusting of burley. The foreshore in front of the Thai restaurant has continued to fish well for King George whiting. At Woody Lake, bream have been biting on both lures and baits. Big thanks to the pros from Southern Sports and Tackle for their tips as always!

Great Southern catches
Here's your best overall photo winner from the 2023 Salmon Slam! As soon as we came across this snap of six-year-old Hailey Hordyk (left) and Zoe Hordyk (right) posing with their fish landed from Dingoes Beach, it went immediately to first place, given the fish are still alive and being held correctly, with a picturesque beach and beaming smiles also visible!

Boats

Boaties that got out to the 100-150m depths of the continental shelf last week found plenty of 50-60cm nannygai and there were also reports of the odd hapuka landed. The coral ground has been fishing reasonably well, but leatherjackets have been a pest, stealing baits and biting off hooks. Nevertheless, there were quite a few pink snapper caught in the 60-80m depths along with a few dhufish, the odd breaksea cod and harlequin fish. Boats trolling around the islands have been catching salmon. The weed beds in King George Sound have been holding plenty of squid and on the broken ground in the sound there have been King George whiting around the 40cm mark, moving around has been key for the better King George captures though. That strong easterly wind is sticking around for a few days but Thursday might see a big drop off in the winds.

Shore-based

Back Beach and the areas around Cheynes has been the most reliable salmon spot in what has generally been a hit-or-miss salmon season, while on the right days Sand Patch, Salmon Holes and Shelley Beach have fished well for them. East of town blue groper have been landed from the rocks when the swells are down. Herring have been plentiful off beaches, jetties and rock walls around town, squid have been caught around Middleton Beach and herring and whiting have come from Emu Point. At the King and Kalgan rivers, stickbaits and soft plastics have been working well on bream. Herring and the odd salmon are coming from the beaches around Denmark, while crabs and prawns have been running in the Wilson Inlet. Big thanks to the crew from Trailblazers in Albany for their tips!

South West catches
Luke Latty @luke_latty has had a pretty memorable week! He came runner up for the random prize in the 2023 Salmon Slam, winning $670 worth of fishing goodies from Shimano, before landing this Dwayne Johnson of a brute baldy in the South-West. Will also accept Jason Statham, Vin Diesel...give it a few more years of growing Hollywood baldness and that list will grow, unlike the hair of this current list.

Boats

Pink snapper have been rewarding inshore anglers, some fishing in depths as little as 5m, with the usual technique of anchoring and burleying proving reliable. Slightly further out in 10-15m depths dhufish have been in good numbers, with a few King George whiting among them. Squid fishers have enjoyed good catches from the weed beds off Bunbury and in Geographe Bay and it has been worth having a baited line out as well with snapper, skippy, herring, King George and sand whiting biting well. A staff member of Whitey’s Tackle and Camping who was squidding off Busselton this week had his floating mulie bait hit by a thumping 3.5kg skippy, a commendable catch on a flick rod and 8lb braid. Boaties and kayakers around the Capes have been catching pink snapper on the lumps and, when trolling lures, they have landed some good salmon. Low swells and moderate easterly winds should provide decent boating windows this week.

Shore-based

Preston, Myalup, Belvedere and Buffalo beaches have fished well for pink snapper, tailor and herring. In Bunbury, the Cut has produced chopper tailor, herring and big pink snapper, while the rock walls around town have been reliable for herring and skippy. The middle reaches of the Collie River have bream and a few soapy mulloway. There have been lots of herring along the beaches in Geographe Bay along with a few whiting, while squid and herring have been plentiful at the Busselton Jetty, with the jetty’s halfway mark the sweet spot for squid. Just keep an eye out for fresh ink stains and you'll know you're in the right territory! Salmon have been caught in better numbers this week around the Capes, with Bunker Bay, Eagle Bay and Castle Rock among the more consistent spots with some good-sized tailor among them. Take advantage of those easterly winds if you're fishing off the beaches this weekend. Big thanks to the great team at Whitey's Tackle for their report as always!

If you're part of the fishing-mad mums, dads and kids that fish off the south jetty that is attached to the old Collie Bridge located inland from Australind and Bunbury (pictured above), you'll be pleased to hear the Dardanup Shire council recently voted to save, refurbish and take ownership of the southern jetty and go it alone to restore it to its former glory as a crabbing and fishing hotspot, after negotiations with Main Roads and neighboring councils, including the City of Bunbury and Shire of Harvey were unsuccessful. You can read more about this developing story here.

Freshwater

That's one fat rainbow trout! The Lefroy Brook region was teeming with nice trout this week in the shallow streams, including this heffa landed by Mitch Harrison . Photo courtesy of @anglersfishingworld.
With the recent rains, the larger dams have started to spice up for trout and redfin perch action, with the latter species turning up in good numbers around the structure. Solid redfin perch have come from the Collie River near the swing bridge both from land-based fishers and those on yaks, while more good perch catches have also been reported around Drakesbrook Weir. Preston River has also been fishing well for redfin with some stonker 40cm+ fish. Fly-fishing for brown and rainbow trout has improved at Lefroy Brook, with plenty of fat and healthy fish spotted cruising the shallow streams and rivers. Try to move quietly and slowly as they can be very easy to spook. If you catch any great trout or redfin, make sure you message us a snap of the catch to our Instagram page @recfishwest.
Mandurah and surrounds

Mandurah

Don't forget - thanks to the great crew from Tackle World Miami, they are giving away $250 worth of Richter and Nomad lures to the first fisher who catches a dolphinfish or wahoo at the Mandurah FADs! We haven't received a snap yet, so this prize is still up for grabs!

To win, all you need to do is:

1) Travel out to either of the two Mandurah FADs (coordinates linked below) and be the first to catch a dolphinfish or wahoo;
2) Take a snap of yourself holding your catch with the fish still alive, held horizontally, without fingers in the gills and with the Mandurah FAD where you caught it clearly visible in the photo behind you (winner will only be selected if they respect these rules);
3) Message the photo of your catch to the Recfishwest Facebook or Recfishwest Instagram page with your full name, details on how you caught your catch and the Mandurah FAD that you fished and stay tuned to see if you’re a winner!

To see the exact coordinates of the Mandurah FADs along with all other FADs in WA, click here.

The Five-Fathom Bank and James Service Reef have been holding pink snapper, although many have been on the smaller side. Most of the offshore entertainment this week was provided by skippy, with both the first two mentioned spots holding them in plague proportions. The chunky 35cm skippy have been going berserk in burley trails in 10-15m depths, taking squid and fish baits and also soft plastics, especially white-coloured ones. Thrown in among the skippy have been quite a few yellowtail kingfish with lots of 60cm models landed, but much bigger fish were lost at the net or cutting lines on the reef. There have also been good-sized King George and sand whiting caught, especially at Five-Fathom Bank. Pink snapper catches have tapered off a little from the rock walls and beaches south of town, but mulloway numbers have really picked up with the Halls Head and Seascapes area fishing very well. Most mulloway are around the 70cm mark, but a one metre-plus fish was landed this week right on an 11am tide change on a white Berkely Power Bait Jerk Shad. The beaches south of the Cut have been holding King George whiting to 40cm, along with yellowfin whiting. In the estuary good numbers of black bream have been caught around the canals, bridges and jetties, while the Cut has fished well for big herring and the odd skippy. Down at Preston Beach a few salmon have also been caught in smaller sizes. Those moderate easterly winds should make it relatively flat on the water this week. Big thanks to Tackle World Miami for their chunky report as always.

SECRET HARBOUR / PORT KENNEDY / ROCKINGHAM / SAFETY BAY / WARNBRO SOUND

Those heading out wide have done well on dhufish up to 18kg in the 60m depths along with plenty of pink snapper and breaksea cod, while inshore pink snapper have been plentiful at the back of the Five-Fathom Bank in depths around 10m, with some nice skippy among them. Best results for inshore pink snapper have come from anchoring and using burley. Further offshore, anglers trolling skirted lures in the 40m depths have been catching yellowfin tuna nudging 30kg. At Windmills and around Garden Island, King George whiting have been in good numbers although the sizes are nothing special. Inside of Garden Island squid fishing has been good around the weed banks, while herring and sand whiting have also been plentiful there.  Anglers throwing lures or unweighted mulies into the white-water around Mewstones and Stragglers have been landing chunky tailor.

For land-based fishers, good mulloway have been taken from beaches around Secret Harbour and Port Kennedy along with plenty of herring and a few whiting. Squid have been plentiful with better spots being the rocks around Point Peron, Woodman Point, the Ammo Jetty, Jervoise Bay and the Port Kennedy boat ramp. They have also been caught at Rockingham and Palm Beach jetties too, along with few herring. Mullet have also been taken from these jetties by patient anglers using very small hooks and bread for bait. Long Point and the Penguin Island spit have been fishing well for herring and sand whiting. Big thanks to Compleat Angler Rockingham for their great tips.

Perth catches
It's almost a sure bet that when Brody Laroux @blaroux ventures out for a fish off the Perth coast he catches solid wahoo, Spanish mackerel or tuna, with this thumper longtail landed alongside @dan_macray this week.

Boats

Pink snapper have been most active in the 60-80m depths at the back of Rottnest Island, along with decent dhufish around the 5kg mark, a few baldies and some breaksea cod. The FADs also fired last week for dolphinfish and big yellowfin tuna, while the wrecks around Rottnest’s West End were fishing well for yellowtail kingfish and Samson fish. Pink snapper have come from the Five-Fathom Bank along with some big King George whiting, with drifting squid baits working nicely. Windmills and Three-Mile Reef have also been fishing well for King George whiting, with small strips of squid tentacles the best bait. The shipping channels around Cockburn Sound have been holding pink snapper and school-sized mulloway. Inshore fishers have been doing well on squid, herring and sand whiting with the calmer conditions this week and it's always worth catching a few squid first then using their tentacles as bait to then start targeting the fish. The easterly winds will be quite strong over the next few days with a bit of rain potentially on the way.

Shore-based

Metro beaches and groynes have continued to fish well for pink snapper and some good mulloway have been taken as well. North Mole has been a mulloway hot spot for those night owls and early risers prepared to put in the crazy hours, while the stretch from Ocean Reef to Two Rocks has also produced big mulloway. Herring and skippy have also been taken off the moles and from Swanbourne and Floreat beaches. At the latter two spots big flathead have been a bycatch. Inside the marina at Hillarys Boat Harbour a solid 1kg skippy was landed by a staff member from Anglers Fishing World who was on a bait-fishing mission for fresh yellowtail. He also picked up some nice sand whiting and caught and released quite a few juvenile pink snapper. South Mole continued to fire for squid this week with red-foil Shimano Sephia squid jigs doing particularly well. Fishing has been fairly quiet in the Swan River now that it is starting to cool down, but there were a few bream around Ascot, Maylands and Bayswater. It’s likely the next big cold front will send the bream further downstream to the middle sections of the river. Beach fishing should be decent over the next few days though with that strong easterly providing decent support with casting albeit with a touch of rain. Bets of luck if heading out!
