Fishing Report
02/06/23

Following Government fishery management changes, 78 charter operators are facing the prospect of losing their businesses in the coming months with fishers aboard their vessels no longer able to fish for demersal fish like dhufish and pink snapper in the West Coast Bioregion (WCB – from Kalbarri down to Augusta) from 1 July.

This will significantly reduce opportunities for people with no boats or small boats to safely experience the joy of fishing for quality bottom fish in the WCB on board a charter boat or on “live-aboard” charter trips to locations like the Abrolhos.

RECFISHWEST URGES GOVERNMENT RETHINK WITH WA CHARTER FISHING BUSINESSES UNDER THREAT
Experiencing the thrill of catching bottom species such as pink snapper and dhufish on west coast fishing charter are now severely under threat after the Government announced 78 of 99 West Aussie charter businesses were not allocated tags this week.

As is the case with recreational fishers, the charter sector has been told to slash their catches and to do this they are moving to a tag system due to take effect on 1 July. This week, 78 the 99 charter fishing licence holders in the west coast bioregion were dealt a bitter blow after being told they will receive zero tags, destroying the value of their licence and meaning that in less than four weeks, they face the real prospect of going out of business.

The 21 licence holders who did receive tags are also looking at a 70% reduction in their catches, which exceeds the 59% and 12% respectively that recreational and commercial fishers have been asked to reduce their demersal catches by.

With family-friendly and family-run businesses on the line, Recfishwest is calling for the Government to rethink these changes that are threatening the livelihoods of many along with these great fishing experiences off our coastline.

Broome catches
Macknificent! This 158cm beast of a Spaniard caught locally by Caelum was landed on 30lb braid on a baitcaster reel, which just shows that lighter gear combined with the right techniques can still land mighty fish. Photo courtesy of @tackleworldbroome

Boats

Sailfish, tuna and big Spanish mackerel have been caught on trolled skirted lures and Halco Laser Pros in in 20-24m depths, while the reefy ground in 18m depths has been holding Spanish flag, red emperor, spangled emperor, Maori sea perch and coral trout. A few Spanish mackerel have also been seen around the drop-off at Gantheaume Point. In Roebuck Bay, Black Rock has held northern mulloway and the edge of the Deeps has been productive for bluebone. Crab and Dampier Creek along with the Fingers have been producing blue-nosed and threadfin salmon, especially at the mouths. Prawn baits have worked well on both salmon species while Jackall Squirrels and Nomad Vertrex vibes have been the most successful lures. Conditions are looking ideal for the boaties in Broome this weekend so enjoy!

Shore-based

Town Beach Jetty continues to punch above its weight and has been very consistent for grunter, school mackerel, queenfish and trevally. The Port Jetty has been quieter, but a few bluebone have come from sections of the jetty that have broken ground. The rocky shoreline at Entrance Point is probably a better bet for bluebone and also trevally this week, but be prepared to lose some tackle to the snags. With the smaller tides, Willie and Barred Creek have been very accessible and have fished well for mangrove jack, blue-nosed salmon, bream and flathead, while Coconut Wells and Cable Beach have been reliable whiting spots. The Fitzroy River has been fishing well for barramundi around Telegraph Pool and Langies. For the best tips and gear for your fishing expedition, make sure you visit the helpful pros at Tackle World Broome for advice and they will provide details on spots with the best access for a flick.
Exmouth catches
Gotta love seeing overseas visitors flying to Western Australia to experience true battles on fly! It was a golden trevally double for American duo Rick and Michael, who landed some whopper golden trevally around the shallows of Exmouth. Photo courtesy of @exmouthflyfishing.

Boats

Conditions have been improving all week, allowing boaties to get out to the western side. Some have gone really wide and have been doing well on monster ruby snapper in depths around the 200m mark. In the 60-100m depths trolled garfish have tempted black marlin and sailfish, while on the bottom Rankin cod around the 4-8kg mark have become more aggressive with the cooler water temperatures and are taking baits, soft plastics and Nomad Squidtrex vibes in the 20-45m depths. Heading south off Winderabandi, Spanish mackerel and wahoo have also been hitting garfish baits trolled at speeds of around 7 knots in 40-80m depths. Around the islands, red emperor have been caught in 50-60m depths with bigger reds coming from the 80m mark. In the Gulf, Rankin cod have been caught in 15-20m depths and spearfishers have been doing well on coral trout. King Reef has held Rankin cod around the 4kg mark along with some blue-lined emperor, while the shoals have produced good mixed bags of queenfish, trevally, chinaman cod and Moses perch, with Cooper, Camplin and Bennett shoals among the better spots. Squid have been plentiful on the weed beds out from the marina and down to Learmonth. The south-easterly winds should drop off along with the swell over this weekend for decent boating conditions.

Shore-based

Deep in the Gulf, fly-fishers have been doing well on queenfish, while Learmonth Jetty produced squid and a few queenfish and trevally species. In the marina small trevally and queenfish are hitting metal slices and mangrove jack around 45cm have been taking mulie baits and soft plastics. The hardyhead schools at Bundegi have continued to attract queenfish and trevally, while at Tantabiddi spangled emperor have been on the chew, with many fishers recommending using burley there to produce the best results. The Lighthouse and Mildura Wreck have fished well for spangled emperor, small queenfish, chinaman, cod and bluebone, with burley again the key to good catches. The best bait for the bluebone has been small rock crabs, so it's always worth prowling the shallows or the rocks and grabbing a couple (with gloves) before having a flick. Big thanks to the crew from Tackle World Exmouth for their tips as always!

Kalbarri catches

Boats

Despite ideal conditions earlier this week, boats trolling for Spanish mackerel have found them few and far between, with cooler water temperatures blamed for pushing the mackies further offshore. As a compensation, tuna have been about with the Sand Patch area one of the better spots. Boaties have reported much better results for demersals on both sides of town with decent dhufish, big snapper, breaksea cod, Rankin cod and baldchin groper coming over the side. Depths have been varied, but the 30-40m marks have been a good starting point for them. Trolling close to shore has also produced some whopper tailor, with a few fish over 80cm bracket smashing trolled mulies on gang hooks and also stickbaits. Saturday and Sunday should be decent for the boaties but brace yourself for a fishing wipeout from Monday to Wednesday.

Shore-based

Mulloway are still in the Murchison River, once again numbers are down, but sizes are still good with a youngster catching a 1.2m croaker from the Sand Spit this week. There has also been mulloway action around the marina jetty and at the river mouth with mullet strips and mulie baits responsible for a lot of the catching. Bream and cod have been caught in the snaggy parts of the river, a few whiting have come from the Sand Spit and mud crabs have been still been worth chasing. Across the river near Frustrations, Tim Farnell caught some big tailor on poppers, including the monster pictured above in our pic of the week. His fishing buddy did well there too, landing a Spanish mackerel on a bottom rig while targeting pink snapper! Back Beach and Chinamans have held smaller tailor while a few squid have been around Red Bluff along with chopper tailor, herring and dart. Chinamans has also fished well for whiting. Make the most of the great conditions this weekend before it goes haywire from Monday and big thanks to Dean from Kalbarri Sports and Dive for his tips as always!
Geraldton catches

Boats

From the northern regions of Dongara, the broken ground in 8-25m depths has fished well for dhufish upwards of 80cm, baldchin groper around the 4kg mark and coral trout. Squid and octopus baits have worked well on all three species but so have fillets of yellowtail or pike, which have been plentiful close in. Around town, boaties who found a weather window and clear water managed a feed of squid from the weed banks south of the harbour up to Drummonds. Out at the Abrolhos Islands, crayfishers have reported plenty of Spanish mackerel activity around the Wallabi group. Saturday is looking decent with low to moderate easterlies and swell, but expect some rough weather to roll in from Sunday arvo until Friday next week.

Shore-based

Good mulloway catches have come from beaches right along the coast, but the most consistent spots have been Southgates and the Drummonds to Coronations stretch. Southgates has also been holding a few tailor and pike have been around most beaches. The better whiting spots have been Pages Beach, Point Moore and inside the bay at Drummonds, but at times weed has been a problem. Reasonable squid captures have come from north of the Batavia Coast Marina along the Chapman Road stretch. Pink snapper and Spanish mackerel have been in good numbers further north towards Wagoe. It should be pleasant conditions for beach fishing on Saturday but it's looking rather horrible from Sunday evening through until later next week. Big thanks to Geraldton Sports Centre for their report as always!
Lancelin catches
As Lancelin's fishing guru Peter Fullarton from Tailored Treks tours put it, the bigger greenback tailor are turning up in the Lancelin wash again, meaning he'll be "casting lures until November!" Check out his latest YouTube video showing off this action by clicking here.

Boats

The past week produced some fantastic fishing action and weather. Saturday looks the best bet this weekend and the Lancelin Angling Club will be fishing their Western Australia Day Cup. Winter will well and truly make its mark from Sunday and next week is shaping up to be a complete wipe out for fishing. Last weekend saw several dhufish in the 10-12kg range and some big whiskery sharks to 7-8kg as bycatch from boats heading out wide, while fishers staying around the 25-35m depths were finding lots of cuttlefish and baldchin groper. Fishers setting a burly trail on the grounds inside the white bank have been catching some great pink snapper to 8kg along with some schooling skippy around the one kg mark, while lumps in 8-15m have been populated with the larger pinkish breaksea cod we usually see for most the year offshore. They have been very responsive to soft plastics jigged along the 8-10m edge along the back of the first line of reefs.

Shore-based

The beach casters have been having a great run, with easterly winds and calm seas. Despite the calm conditions, they have still managed to pick up the odd mulloway, snapper or smaller whaler sharks. While the chopper tailor have been quite absent from the open beaches, a few winter greenbacks have started to move into the wash areas behind near shore reefs. While the big seas next week will make fishing impossible, it will also create some good structure along the usual areas by forming deep gutters over winter. Once the seas settle, we should see more winter tailor moving into those gutters along with school mulloway. About the only spot to see much action next week will be the Lancelin jetty as it always fires up in the rough weather where schools of herring and baitfish shelter around the structure each night. Samson fish, large tailor or the odd mulloway and snapper can be caught here during the big storms. Saturday looks great, but Sunday evening onwards will be unfishable for a few days. Big thanks to Lancelin's fishing guru Peter Fullarton for his tips and make sure you check out his Tailored Treks fishing tours if you want to be put on to the fish.

Esperance catches

Boats

Big winds and 5m swells have made offshore fishing very difficult this week with most boaties staying inshore or staying home. Nevertheless, the 15-20m depths just out from the surf club have been productive for sand whiting with the fish biting throughout most of the morning with bigger sand whiting being caught on overcast days. Out from Lovers Cove, 50cm-plus King George whiting have been caught but not in great numbers. Drifting along the port rock walls has been effective for sand whiting and squid, while anchoring just off the weed and sand lines at the foreshore and casting out a half mulie has produced big flathead. Squid have been in good numbers throughout Esperance Bay. A boatie who managed to find a weather window earlier this week landed a 25kg Samson fish at Charley Island, which has also fished well for blue groper and harlequin fish. Sunday morning is looking like a nice boating window so good luck if you're heading out!

Shore-based

Weed has been a problem this week so it’s no surprise the more sheltered waters have accounted for the better catches. Bandy Creek Boat Harbour is protected from wind and swell and proved a popular spot for skippy around the 40cm mark, good numbers of King George whiting and small chopper tailor in the afternoons. The Town Jetty has been sensational for squid with many anglers easily getting their bag limits. The squid have come into quite shallow water and 40cm hoods were common. Squid jigs in white, light green and subtle pink have worked best. Taylor Street Jetty and the rock walls have been fishing well for bull herring and also King George whiting around the 40cm mark. The deeper beaches have been less affected by weed and Alexander Bay, Poison Creek and Tagon Bay have produced gummy sharks up to 12kg and mulloway in the 80-90cm range. Conditions this weekend are expected to be good for mulloway as well. Wheatfield and Woody lakes have been holding black bream up to 1.5kg which have been taking paddletail soft plastics and prawn baits, while Stokes Inlet is a safe and family-friendly fishing spot that has been producing salmon up to 2kg, plenty of bream and quite a few flathead. Big thanks to the pros from Southern Sports and Tackle for their tips as always!
Great Southern catches
Liam Wesson had an epic southern boating session off Albany this week, pulling in this plump breaksea cod along with numerous other spectacular southern species such as queen snapper, harlequin and tuna. Check out his Insta page @liamwesson to keep up to date with his great catches.

Boats

King George whiting have been plentiful from the islands inwards to King George Sound and among the KGs are hordes of small (mostly undersized) pink snapper. Squid have also been in good numbers throughout the sound with 8-15m depths fishing well when boats are drifting or anchoring on the sand next to weed patches and having a flick. A few salmon have been around the island, but catches have tapered off.  Elsewhere in the Sound, fishing has been decent for sand whiting and herring. Boats that were able to get to the coral ground earlier this week when the conditions allowed it found pink snapper, queen snapper, nannygai and dhufish. Saturday is looking okay for the boaties, but the wind and swell spike from Sunday through to at least Thursday will make it impossible for fishing unfortunately.

Shore-based

Salmon catches have been inconsistent, but on the right day the better spots have been Nanarup, Shelley Beach, Muttonbird Beach, Little Beach, Lowlands and Cheynes. Herring are plentiful right along the coast and the Princess Royal Sailing Club has been a good spot for solid skippy. Squid fishing has been productive with the better spots being Middleton Beach jetty at night, the rocks at Frenchman Bay and Emu Point. Feeds of herring, skippy and sand whiting have come from the Marina Jetty, Emu Point and Gull Rock. Bream around the 30-35cm mark have been taking prawn baits, soft plastics and hard-bodied lures in the King, Kalgan and Hay rivers. In the Wilson Inlet pink snapper and bream have been turning up in welcome numbers and sizes. Big thanks to the crew from Trailblazers in Albany for their tips!

South West catches
With the last weekend of Autumn proving ideal glassy conditions, the crew from @2_oceans_tackle got up to their usual antics by catching quality fish such as this baldchin groper and taking crispy snaps in our South-West. Check out their Insta page above and pay their tackle store a visit if you're in Busselton!

Boats

There have been plenty of fish offshore, but prize catches have been rare. Pink snapper sizes are on the up and harlequin fish, small dhufish, breaksea cod and baldchin groper have been in reasonable numbers in 20-25m depths both north and south of town. The 20-30m depths off Canal Rocks have produced bigger dhuies and breaksea cod. King George whiting fishing has been very good out from Wonnerup and in Geographe Bay. Squid have been plentiful out that way too, mainly in 8-12m depths, but good catches have also come from 20m-plus depths. At the artificial reef 3.5km out from Bunbury, skippy have been plentiful while small tuna have been in good numbers at a range of locations and depths with surface action the best way to find them and chrome slices the go-to lure. A feed of herring has been easy to come by anywhere off Bunbury or Busselton when burley is used. Saturday is looking glorious for the boats, but expect winds that will turn your umbrella inside out from Sunday through to at least Thursday.

Shore-based

Preston Beach has produced a few salmon first thing in the morning and herring and sand whiting throughout the day. Preston, Myalup and Binningup have also been good spots to target pink snapper. Closer to Bunbury the main catches at Belvedere, Buffalo and Back beaches have been herring and tailor. Bunbury Cut has produced herring and sand whiting, while the odd smallish salmon has been caught from the rocks at the end of Jetty Road. Peppermint and Forrest beaches saw small tailor and herring and a few pink snapper have also been caught there. Busselton Jetty has fished very well for herring and squid and a few mulloway and pink snapper have come from the end of the jetty. Further south a few tailor around 50cm have come from Boranup Beach while soapy mulloway have been around Boojidup Beach and Contos. Enjoy those ideal conditions on Saturday before the storms cruise in and big thanks to the great team at Whitey's Tackle in Australind for their report!

Freshwater

The fly master Simon Holland @southernforests_angler has been Pemberton's freshwater prince for a long time and landed this chunky 40cm+ specimen with a pretty uninterrupted backdrop!
At Harvey Dam the water levels are quite low, so this weekend would be a good opportunity to wade the shore and identify good holes and snaggy ground for future reference. Two of the crew from Tackle World Miami were at Harvey Dam on Monday and caught plenty of redfin perch and also had a trout hook-up. They were fishing opposite the dam wall and using small hard-bodied lures in trout colours including Jackson Bottom Magics in black with a red eye and Tasmanian Devil blades. A good rainbow trout of 50cm+ also came from Harvey Dam this week. Big redfin have also come from the deeper sections of Wellington Dam, around the wall and at the Sticks, with micro jigs proving effective on them. A few rainbow trout have come from the upper reaches of the Collie River, which has also fished well for redfin perch, while redfin have also been caught in the nearby Preston River. Some big redfin perch and a few trout have also been reported around Bridgetown and a rainbow trout of more than 60cm was reportedly caught at Big Brook near Pemberton. Big redfin perch have also been active in the rivers and streams around Pemberton with some good fish caught on worms fished under a bubble float. If you catch any great trout or redfin, make sure you message us a snap of the catch to our Instagram page @recfishwest
Mandurah and surrounds
Matty Ma @instahungfishing hats off to you for pulling in this kidney slapper of a King george whiting during last weekend's glassy conditions off Mandurah and for holding this slippery/slimy whopper with such ease. Let's have a moment of silence for all previous fishers who have rustled in big KG's only to have them slip out of their hands like a bar of soap and back into the drink.

Mandurah

Dhufish have been in good numbers in the 20m depths out from Dawesville and further south, while Five Fathom Bank still had plenty of pink snapper, skippy and King George whiting around the 55cm mark. Further out the back of the Five Fathom, tuna species are feeding on baitfish, while reports of bigger tuna have come from the FADs. A surprise this week has been some good hauls of blue swimmer crabs, both male and female, believed to have been caught near the mouth of the estuary. Still in the estuary, bream have been caught from the rock walls and marinas and in the Murray and Serpentine rivers, with activity expected to pick up after this week’s rain front. Herring have been about in big numbers at the Dawesville Cut along with the odd juvenile salmon and the Mandurah traffic bridges have been holding plenty of herring also. Anglers fishing along the shore at Seascapes have been catching yellowfin and King George whiting, herring and the odd soapy mulloway. Big snapper have been caught from the beaches with reefy structure, especially around Tims Thicket and White Hills. The forecast will provide a fishing green light on Saturday but a firm red light between Sunday and Thursday.

SECRET HARBOUR / PORT KENNEDY / ROCKINGHAM / SAFETY BAY / WARNBRO SOUND

Things have quietened on the offshore front with the midweek rain system doing little to stir up activity. Regulars hope a bigger blow next week will fire things up. Pink snapper are still around the Five Fathom Bank along with skippy, but catches have slowed. For dhufish, the 40m depths behind Garden Island have produced reasonable numbers of fish around the 80cm mark. King George whiting have been one of the most consistent catches in a range of depths over broken ground. Some very big KG's have come from depths of more than 25m by anglers targeting pink snapper and often breaksea cod have been a welcome addition to the mix. Smaller KG's have been caught from Parmelia Bank, Mangles Bay and inside of Garden Island. Squid fishers have been doing well anywhere in Cockburn and Warnbro sounds and Mangles Bay, while the sandy flats there have held reasonable numbers of sand whiting and herring. Squidding in deeper water has also produced big cuttlefish. At Coventry Reef, Samson fish and a few small yellowtail kingfish have been about along with the odd salmon, while tailor are in the reefy white-water behind Garden Island and at Mewstone and Stragglers. For land-based fishers, Secret Harbour and Port Kennedy have fished well for tailor but no bigger winter models have turned up yet. When the swell is down both beaches have produced herring and sand whiting.  At the Ammo Jetty plenty of scaly mackerel are about but their presence is yet to attract bigger predators. The same area has produced plenty of squid along with herring and a few small skippy. Long Point and the Penguin Island sand spit have offered mixed bags of herring, King George and sand whiting and the odd flathead or flounder. Rockingham and Palm Beach jetties have been reliable for squid and herring, and around dusk a few chopper tailor. Big thanks to Compleat Angler Rockingham for their great tips and make the most of the ideal conditions tomorrow before it starts to get wild from Sunday.

Perth catches
The pristine conditions over the weekend saw some cracking pelagic catches around Rottnest, with this decent Spanish mackerel and another fat yellowfin tuna caught on the cast by Shuggy. Saturday is looking decent again before the weather goes haywire from Sunday. Photo courtesy of @compleatanglernedlands

Boats

Dhufish, pink snapper and baldchin groper catches have been widespread in 30-50m depths throughout the metro area and in 80-100m depths out the back of Rottnest. The western end of Rottnest has also been holding yellowtail kingfish and out deep, tuna and Spanish mackerel. Direction Bank has produced pink snapper and dhufish and Three-Mile Reef has fished well for pink snapper, along with good King George whiting and a few breaksea cod. Boaties trolling the inshore reefs north of Hillarys have been rewarded with big tailor and last weekend a boatie reported seeing a marlin jumping in 90m depths out from Two Rocks. Elsewhere, Windmills has been a standout for King George whiting and the Five Fathom Bank has fished well for KG's and skippy. Squidding has been excellent in Cockburn Sound and south of Fremantle, where good numbers of sand whiting, skippy and herring have also been caught. The weed beds off Hillarys have also fished well for squid. Boats trolling in the lower reaches of the Swan River have been catching chopper tailor and with baitfish schooling in Mosman Bay, it could be worth having a crack for mulloway. It's looking glorious on Saturday for the boaties but don't bother even thinking about it between Sunday and Thursday this week!

More proof that Perth was a pelagic paradise this week. Tim and Sam also got on to some solid yellowfin tuna in the metro area, with this specimen (and even bigger) pulled in during the ideal fishing conditions last weekend. Photo courtesy of @anglersfishingworld.

Shore-based

North Mole has fished well for herring and skippy and a few pink snapper were caught there after this week’s cold front passed through. South Mole also produced herring and skippy too and it has been a metro favourite for land-based squid. Floreat Beach has been a reliable spot for herring and sand whiting and the stretch from south Cottesloe through to Fremantle also saw plump skippy, tailor and herring. Beaches north of Hillarys are holding herring, tailor and at times mulloway and pink snapper. The lower reaches of the Swan River from Mosman downstream are full of scaly mackerel and around the traffic bridges big Samson fish have been seen cruising by, so it could be worth flicking stickbaits and poppers around there to entice a strike. Up river from the Narrows, soapy mulloway have been caught on soft plastics and bream seem to be making their way downstream from the upper reaches. With gentle easterly winds and low swell, make the most of these conditions on Saturday and go wet a line before the storms roll in and big thanks to Anglers Fishing World in Freo for their tips!
