Han Yeoh @hanyeoh13 decided to wander the shallows of the beaches around Rockingham over the weekend and found plenty of squid lurking over the nearshore weed beds. You will be surprised at the depths you can catch these delicious critters, with Han hooking up in barely waist-deep water. If you want to know the best squidding tips and action across WA, make sure you join the Calamari Kings Facebook Page group.

Pic of the Week!

This 1.15m monster of a threadfin salmon landed by @tyler_ridlzz was a new personal best thready for the talented angler and was just one of many great captures from the local Broome creeks this week. It might not be the fattest thready, but it's one of the longest we've seen from the creeks for a while, so get out there and see if you can top it!

Broome catches
Ash Vagh @oceanarcadia managed to find a nice school of blue lined emperor off Broome this week. This species is right up there as one of the best eating fish in WA and are also great fun to target on stickbaits over shallow reefs.

Boats

Crews that have gone offshore have managed to find bluebone, spangled emperor and Spanish flag in the 18m depths around 12 Mile Reef, while sailfish have been spotted and tuna have been busting up in in 15-20m depths. Spanish mackerel have been in good numbers about 15km out west and closer in off Barred Creek. Crab Creek has offered threadfin and blue-nosed salmon along with a few barra, with Nomad Vertrex vibes and Jackall Transam vibes both good lure options. Mud crabs have been in good numbers at the Fingers which has also held threadfin and blue-nosed salmon. The wind direction is all over the place but is generally staying relatively low over the coming week with a stable 1m swell, so it should be pleasant on the water.

Shore-based

Cable Beach held plenty of whiting as did Coconut Wells, which also offered blue-nosed salmon. At the Port Jetty bluebone have been the main target but a few queenfish and giant trevally have been among them and there have been whispers of barramundi being taken around the jetty pylons. At Entrance Point, anglers wading out at low tide have found bluebone and queenfish, while at Town Beach Jetty consistent catches of bream, trevally and javelin fish have ensured a spot on the jetty has been premium real estate. Willie Creek offered a few blue salmon along with trevally and mangrove jack, while the mouth of Barred Creek produced trevally and bluebone. Telegraph Pool and Langies have been among the better spots that produced barramundi. For the best tips and gear for your fishing expedition, make sure you visit the helpful pros at Tackle World Broome for advice and they will provide details on spots with the best access for a flick.
Exmouth catches
It's all about working the angles when trying to take a perfect snap of sailfish, thankfully the @onstrikecharters crew know how to work the camera and the pristine waters off Exmouth to catch and release these beauties with ease. One lucky couple on their honeymoon in Exmouth this week hit the jackpot during one session with the charter crew.

Boats

Good weather windows have enticed boats way out west to 200-300m depths where interesting catches have included big cod, hapuka, goldband snapper, pink snapper, ruby snapper and pearl perch. Most anglers were fishing with electric reels, with some using heavy jigs and others opting for squid and mullet baits. On the game fishing front there have been some dud days on the western side where masses of baitfish left billfish showing no interest in anglers’ offerings. On other days however, sailfish and black and striped marlin were smashing trolled Richter Grassys and Bonze skirts in 50-200m depths. Wahoo, tuna and a few dolphinfish have also been taken in these depths out west. Spanish mackerel have been plentiful on the western side, from the tip of the Gulf to south of Coral Bay in 10-40m depths. Closer in on the western side and around the islands in 10-80m depths red emperor, Rankin cod, coral trout, spangled emperor and red throat emperor have been caught. Fishing has been pretty good in the Gulf too where Spanish mackerel have been caught at Cooper Shoal along with broad-barred and school mackerel, with coral trout and blue-lined emperor landed in good numbers elsewhere. Squid have been plentiful just out from the town marina, while a few blue swimmer crabs have been caught at Learmonth. Deep in the Gulf, Shallow Water Safaris put fly-fishing clients on to a range of species including mullet, wolf herring and bluebone. With an undulating swell of 2-3m and moderate southerly winds over the coming week, most boats will opt to stay in closer to shore.

Shore-based

Small giant trevally have been in good numbers from Learmonth right around to the west side, while a highlight this week was a big queenfish landed near the Mildura Wreck. Learmonth Jetty fished well for squid, whiting and bream but one of the better land-based spots this week has been Bundegi where trevally, queenfish and bream have been in good numbers around the boat ramp. The beaches around Bundegi have been rewarding too, with big yellowfin whiting plentiful along with Spanish flag and Moses snapper. The town marina offered bream, mangrove jack and small trevally, while squid have been taken from the marina’s outside wall. At the Lighthouse, spangled emperor have been caught and a few bluebone have been landed on fly gear. Tantabiddi fished well for spangled emperor and blue-nosed salmon, which have shown a liking for prawn and squid baits and soft plastics in the grub style. Big thanks to the great crew from Tackle World Exmouth for their tips!

Kalbarri catches
Nicki Hunt @nickihuntfishing and loads of other fishers between Kalbarri and Shark Bay seemed to find a LOT of mulloway this past week, with a good spike in captures reported off the beaches and boats. If you manage to catch a bigger mulloway over one metre, it's best to release them as Nicki did so the breeding cycle continues.

Boats

Once again there’s been very little action with most locals having given up chasing pelagic species and instead biding their time until the demersal ban is lifted for the school holidays between September 23 and October 8 (inclusive). The odd boat has targeted sand whiting in close around Red Bluff. At Jakes the crayfishing activity has picked up a little, with most boats coming home with a few bugs. The wild winds and swell is dropping off a bit, but it will still be rather choppy and rough on the water over the coming week.

Shore-based

Tailor around 35-40cm have been caught at Red Bluff and Wittecarra, along with a few dart. On calmer days whiting have also been active at the same spot, while at Pot Alley a regular snapper chaser was busted off several times by what he believes to be big baldchin groper. In the Murchison River mulloway action slowed a little and the bigger models have gone to ground, but 8-10kg croakers have been landed well up river from the marina. The marina jetty held bream, cod, a few chopper tailor and the occasional mulloway, which are always a chance there. The Sand Spit offered reasonable numbers of whiting along with the odd cod, while mud crabs have been caught from the marina jetty and further upstream. Big thanks to Dean from Kalbarri Sports and Dive for his tips as always!
Geraldton catches
Pulling in Sambo's from the depths will always get the heart racing, but fighting them in the shallows off the inshore Geraldton reefs always raises the stakes! Skilled fisher @mat.svenson is the master at consistently finding these beauties off Gero, so give his page a follow to keep up to date with his action.

Boats

The skippy that were rewarding dinghy anglers around Point Moore in recent weeks have been harder to come by and so have pike and snook, although squid chasers at Greys Bay and Pages have been losing jigs to what are believed to be big snook. The boaties chasing squid have needed to do a bit of prospecting to find out where the clearer water is, but the better spots holding clean conditions have been Separation Point, Greys Bay, off St George’s and at Point Moore. Dinghy fishers off Pages Beach have also reported seeing big schools of garfish. The big swells of around 3m or so are sticking around for the next week, with today and Saturday likely to have the calmer winds.

Shore-based

Tailor activity picked up in short bursts along the coast with Coronations offering a mix of catches including 50cm+ tailor, whiting up to 35cm and a few flathead. Anglers wading out on to the reef at Separation Point have also done well on tailor and smaller tailor have come from the second point at Greenough. Herring catches also improved, especially when burley was used, with good hauls of the little scrappers coming from the rock walls near the harbour right around to the Batavia Coast Marina. The rock walls have also offered whiting and decent skippy. Big thanks to Geraldton Sports Centre for their report as always!
Lancelin catches
Some nice gutters formed along Lancelin's beaches following the storms this week and Peter Fullarton from @tailoredtreksfishing took out Mate (pronounced 'Matey', quite possibly the coolest, most Aussie name in history) and put him on to some solid mulloway.

Boats

Boats heading offshore have been finding schools of southern bluefin tuna and bonito. For boaties hoping to find a feed of sand whiting, the best way to go for finding the schools is to drop a line around the 20m depth contour, while some slightly smaller sand whiting have been lurking in the 5-6m depths both north and south of town. Bay fishers have been doing well chasing herring, snook and skippy. The swell is forecast to be up this weekend, so caution is advised leaving and entering the passages of the bay, it’s certainly not a weekend for the smaller boats or inexperienced and the aggressive winds will be sticking around for the coming week, so it looks like most boats will be staying in the pens or on the trailers unfortunately.

Shore-based

Weed from recent storms has been a problem, which made land-based fishing difficult in most spots and it’s moving around a lot with the tides. Some gutters have been productive, yet were weeded out within hours, forcing fishers to frequently move around. Fishing the daylight hours seems to be the easiest time to spot the clearer areas to get the lines out. When the conditions allowed it, the mornings have been the most productive over the new moon with some good catches of mulloway around 15kg and some winter tailor, with one fish going 80cm this week. Casting surface lures has been one way to negate the weed problem. Lancelin jetty had good numbers of herring coming on the bite after sunset, with anglers having the most success casting small soft plastic jigs. Big thanks to Peter Fullarton for his tips as always and make sure you check out his Tailored Treks fishing tours as they are family-friendly and great fun.

Esperance catches
This awesome photo sums up how beneficial salmon fishing is to families in WA. Jo Truncali, his sister Ella and their parents Keah and Joey snapped this great photo with a soon-to-be-released salmon on Fourth Beach in Esperance, which has been a hot spot for this hard-fighting species for months. They wanted to give a big thanks to Olly from Southern Sports & Tackle for the hot tip on where to go so they could create this lifelong memory.

Boats

With magic weather over the past week many crews opted to head out wide and were rewarded with Samson fish around the 35kg mark and 60cm-plus nannygai, while way out west a 13kg dhufish was landed. Closer in, Observatory, Black and Lion islands have been firing for queen snapper and big Samson fish, and schools of tuna have been passing by most of the islands. Several boats beach-launched from Duke of Orleans Bay this week and crews caught good nannygai, 2.5kg+ breaksea cod and big Samson fish. At Lovers Cove good King George whiting have been caught and boats drifting in 8-15m depths out from Fourth Beach, West Beach and Wylie Bay have done well on sand whiting. Esperance Bay fished well for squid and snook. It's looking rather rough from Monday onwards but this weekend could see some boaties heading out, with a 2m swell and lower winds expected.

Shore-based

The Esperance Land Based Fishing Club are hosting their land based fishing classic this weekend and there is a pretty epic prize pool for a wide range of species below! Make sure you head on down to the Deep Sea Angling Club to sign in tomorrow (16th) at 9am with a briefing before the green light. Remember, you must be at the sign in to be able to claim any prizes! For more info, visit the ELBFC Facebook Page.

The Town Jetty offered plenty of big squid in the afternoons and garfish at night, while the Taylor Street and James Street rock walls have been good for King George whiting, skippy and squid. The foreshore in front of the Thai restaurant held big King George whiting but not in great numbers, while Bandy Creek Boat Harbour fished well for flathead. Salmon continued to be plentiful from beaches right along Great Ocean Drive but the pick of the spots have been 10-Mile, Fourth and Observatory beaches. Mulloway to one metre have come from Dunns Beach and Alexander Bay held gummy sharks to 12kg. Thomas River produced school mulloway and skippy up to 4kg, while Roses and Warrenup beaches have offered salmon and gummy sharks. Bream to 45cm have been hitting soft plastics at Stokes Inlet and Wheatfield Lake. Big thanks to Southern Sport & Tackle for their report as always!

Great Southern catches
Gideon Mettam from Gido's Fishing Adventures was back to his usual antics catching solid pinkies off the yak on the south coast recently, check out the video here.

Boats

Good feeds of squid and King George whiting came from King George Sound earlier this week with the more protected areas at Whalers Cove and Frenchman Bay in 5-8m depths fishing the best. Big swells curtailed offshore activity. Fishing is pretty much a no-go off the south coast this coming week as well unfortunately, with some pretty gnarly winds and swell expected. The sheltered bays protected by the mainland are probably your best bet for wetting a line if you're braving the weather.

Shore-based

DPIRD has advised that from 1 October 2023, fishing will not be permitted for greenlip abalone between Busselton Jetty and Shoal Cape in the Stokes National Park, west of Esperance. While this closure is necessary, Recfishwest is disappointed it has come to this as it was completely avoidable. You can find more details about this here.

Squid catches were good from the Town Marina, Frenchman Bay and Middleton Beach, while the Town Marina produced herring, small skippy and leatherjacket. A few King George whiting around 40cm were landed at Middleton earlier this week. At Emu Point, herring, whiting and skippy have been caught and big Samson fish were starting to make their presence known in the channel, which should increase over the coming weeks. Bream fishing fired up briefly in the King and Kalgan rivers last weekend although the cooler conditions this week may have shut down some of the bigger fish. Big thanks to the crew from Trailblazers in Albany for their tips!

South West catches
With rough weather coming and going, the gutters off the beach in the following days following high winds and swells are a good bet for sinking baits for pinkies. @josh_italiano managed to find this solid 11.3kg pinkie off a South-West beach when the conditions were more welcoming this week. Saturday and Sunday are looking the goods for more pinkie catches off the South-West beaches with lower winds and swell expected after days of rough conditions.

Boats

Most boaties concentrated on Geographe Bay this week as offshore conditions elsewhere were pretty unpleasant and they found plenty of squid and quite a few King George whiting, along with sand whiting and the odd skippy. Other than that not much action was reported elsewhere from the boaties, but both Saturday and Sunday may hold the only decent window for the boats over the next few days, with some rougher winds and swell expected to stick around. If you're keeping the boat in the pen or on the trailer this week, pinkies are a good chance off the beaches though.

Buffalo Beach fished well for pink snapper and mulloway, with both casters and drone fishers getting among them. Fillet baits and fresh squid worked well on both species. A lot of pink snapper and a few mulloway were landed at Busselton Jetty this week and the jetty also held herring and squid before the weather turned nasty. Down at Quindalup a drone fishing crew enjoyed a hot session on pink snapper earlier in the week. Big tailor have been taken in ones and twos at Preston and Buffalo beaches, while the Bunbury rock walls at Back Beach have offered herring and skippy, as has the Bunbury Cut. Bream fishing in the Collie River went quiet. Kudos to the crew from Whitey's Tackle for their tips!

This 48cm dad-bod of a redfin perch reminded us of the famous all-you-can-eat glory days of Sizzler. The Down South Water Rats crew landed quite possibly the fattest redfin perch we've seen recently and this species loves to gorge on anything that comes past given they can consume fish that are 40% the length of their own body. With a five-star eating quality and no bag or size limit, make sure you take these delicious fish home for a great feed.
South-West Kayak Anglers’ freshwater comp starts this weekend and will run for six weeks, check or join their Facebook Page for details. For fly-fishing enthusiasts, the Rise Fly Fishing Film Tour stops off in Perth with short films featuring some of the world’s most spectacular locations screening at Luna Cinemas in Leederville on Tuesday, September 19, from 6.30-8.30pm. Click here to snag tickets to the Perth show. As for freshwater captures this week, Big redfin perch with a liking for soft plastics continue to show up at Wellington and Harvey dams, with shaded areas producing the better fish. Both dams have offered small rainbows and increasing numbers of brown trout. In the Collie River near Honeymoon Pool, yearling brown trout have been hitting small Rapala hard-bodies. Feeder streams in the Harvey area held plenty of small rainbow trout and the odd brown trout in little more than ankle-deep water. Soft plastics and old-school Berkely Gulp trout nuggets have been working well on them. If you catch any great trout or redfin, make sure you message us a snap of the catch to our Instagram page @recfishwest.
Mandurah and surrounds

Mandurah

King George and sand whiting have been the dominant catches over the past week with heaps of sand whiting found inside Five Fathom Bank, while big 50cm King George whiting were at the back of James Service Reef and in the 23m depths at Bouvard Reef. Squid have been harder to find with a few coming from the jetties in the Dawesville Cut earlier in the week and bigger ones on the weed banks in Golden Bay. The Cut produced heaps of herring and a few juvenile salmon, while the estuary end on the north side held small whiting. Tailor in the 35-40cm range have been plentiful in the estuary with trolled Smilin’ Jack lures working well on them and every now and then a school of 50cm fish was encountered. On beaches both sides of town the odd tailor in the 50-60cm range was landed but there have been only a few pink snapper and mulloway catches reported. Bream chasers have found fish in the Serpentine and Murray rivers and the Mandurah traffic bridges held plenty of herring. Saturday and Sunday at this stage have the calmest forecast albeit with a touch of rain. Make sure you pay a visit to the great crew from Tackle World Miami for the best tips and gear!

SECRET HARBOUR / PORT KENNEDY / ROCKINGHAM / SAFETY BAY / WARNBRO SOUND

If the water is glassy and you can dance a squid jig over the shallow wed beds, you're a good chance of landing some stonker squid just like @hanyeoh13 did over the weekend along the Rockingham beaches. If casting from the shore, it's best to use a lighter squid jig that has a lower sink rate to prevent getting snagged on the weed.

KIng George whiting activity has been quieter in Cockburn Sound and around Garden Island, but the broken ground there has yielded a few. Sand whiting catches also declined, but squidding was good before the storms with Cockburn Sound and Mangles Bay among the better spots. Small tuna were caught behind Garden Island and Five Fathom Bank fished well for skippy when burley was used. For land-based fishers, Long Point has been one of the better spots to fish when strong winds and weed have been around and it produced herring, skippy and whiting. Secret Harbour and Port Kennedy's beaches were quiet for tailor and mulloway but herring and whiting were in reasonable numbers. Squid have been at the Rockingham and Palm Beach jetties and the Ammo Jetty, along with herring. Point Peron also fished well for squid before the blow. Thankfully the recent wild weather is expected to calm down over this weekend, so both boat and land-based fishers should be heading out. Big thanks to Compleat Angler Rockingham for their tips!
Perth catches
Tim Farnell took his sons Ben and Blake out to a lovely spot north of Perth and it was brimming with solid tailor, with the CiD Shiverstick working beautifully to entice the strike. Note the perfect territory they are fishing - exposed reef, choppy water, whitewash and a deep gutter - all ideal features for turning the tailor odds in your favour.

Boats

Boats that went out to the 40m contour depths around Garden Island and at the West End of Rottnest this week found Samson fish, yellowtail kingfish around 5kg and a few tuna, with some solid skippy among them. Closer in near Garden Island King George whiting in the mid-40cm range have been in good numbers, while bigger ones have been in 40m depths behind Windmills. King George whiting have also been caught inshore from Hillarys. Sand whiting catches have eased, but good numbers have come out from Cottesloe with a few King George whiting among them. Squid were in good numbers and sizes before the midweek blow with 3-9m depths off South Beach fishing well and 2.5 sized squid jigs in black catching plenty thanks to their great contrast underwater. Thankfully the aggressive winds and rain should tone down a notch over this weekend, so many boat fishers should have a good window on Saturday to head out.

Shore-based

Chopper tailor were plentiful in the middle reaches of the Swan River with lures such as CID Shiversticks and Ocean’s Legacy Keeling Stickbaits and Bassday Mogul Minnows accounting for fish up to 40cm at Nedlands, Claremont, Applecross and Canning Bridge. A few flathead have been taken around these areas too, especially at Applecross, and they seem to fire up when daily temperatures hit the 25-degree mark which we should see more of in the coming weeks. Bream fishing remained consistent in the Swan River system with most fish favouring structure and drop-offs as far upstream as Guildford but also at Burswood, Canning Bridge, the Causeway and Narrows. Quite a few snapper were landed from North Mole on Monday and one or two came from South Mole. North Mole has also held tailor up to 50cm and snook, while anglers using burley and blob and lumo tube rigs have been catching a feed of herring without much difficulty. Good tailor have also come from the reefs around Cottesloe. South Mole offered herring and a few squid and the Fremantle Sailing Club rock wall fished well for King George whiting earlier in the week. North of the river past Two Rocks saw school mulloway and snapper averaging 50cm have been caught, with decent tailor also coming from the reefs at Yanchep. With the recent stormy conditions expected to ease off tomorrow we're expecting a lot of land-based fishers to be soaking baits in gutters for pink snapper, mulloway and tailor. Best of luck if you're heading out and big thanks to Anglers Fishing World in Freo for their tips!
