ROTTO FISH TOWERS AND MANDURAH ARTIFICIAL REEFS FLOURISHING WITH FISH IN LATEST FOOTAGE!

Check out some of the fantastic species brimming around the artificial reefs off Perth and Mandurah in the video above!

Recfishwest's regular and ongoing monitoring of the "Rotto Fish Towers" and Mandurah artificial reefs have shown big schools of fish with pink snapper, yellowtail kingfish, Samsonfish, skippy, baldchin groper and many other popular species captured swimming around these reefs that recreational fishers love to catch!

Our network of artificial reefs off the WA coastline, using concrete modules and/or repurposed steel as used for the fish towers, continue to support flourishing marine habitats that underpin fantastic fishing experiences.

This is why Recfishwest is working hard with regional coastal communities, industry partners and the Government to develop more artificial reefs all around the State.

Make sure you pay our artificial reefs a visit  -  click here for their coordinates and more info.

Broome catches
@celestemcdonald managed to find this speedy longtail tuna on a recent fishing trip of Cable Beach and this hard-fighting pelagic has been in good numbers this week, with nice conditions allowing boats to have a proper send. Image credit: @reefchiefaustralia.

Boats

Sharks have remained a problem but billfish and Spanish mackerel catches have been decent offshore. Those chasing bottom species have had a miserable time of it however due to the tax man, but the few crews that managed one or two fish before moving spots when the sharks showed up caught red emperor, Rankin cod and coral trout. Sharks have ruled out fishing for northern mulloway in Roebuck Bay and no tripletail catches have been reported there. Crab and Dampier creeks have held a few threadfin salmon and mud crabs, while the bigger tides have kept crews away from the Fingers. The swell over the next few days will be relatively low with a southerly wind but the stronger easterlies will return from Tuesday onwards. Early on Saturday looks best for the boats.

Shore-based

Town Beach Jetty has held bream, small queenfish and trevally, as has Entrance Point and the Port Jetty. Queenfish have come from Willie Creek, while whiting have shown up at Cable Beach and Gantheuame Point. Barred Creek and Quandong have offered queenfish and trevally, while threadfin salmon have been active at Barn Hill. There have been no barramundi reports from the Fitzroy River.

Big thanks to the crew from Tackle World Broome for their tips! Make sure you pay them a visit for the best gear and advice for your next fishing trip.
Exmouth catches
Exmouth has been the big coral trout capital of the word this week and we saw plenty of horses turn up. The @evolutionfishing crew got plenty of customers on to this fantastic fish around the inshore areas of Exmouth and this thumper was one of the biggest landed this week.

Boats

There has been plenty of billfish action on the west side with sailfish and black marlin active in 60m-plus depths, with wahoo and Spanish mackerel also doing the rounds closer in on the west side. A couple of blue marlin have been raised and landed in 400m depths, while the FADs have been holding some big dolphinfish. Bottom fishers have enjoyed good catches of goldband snapper with the odd ruby snapper mixed in. Sizeable Spanish mackerel have been caught in close along with blue-lined emperor and spangled emperor. The Muirons have produced some big Spanish mackerel as well as good coral trout. Conditions in Exmouth Gulf improved midweek and decent catches of tuna, golden trevally, school mackerel and blue-lined emperor came from the wrecks and shoals. Squid fishing in the Gulf has been good after the blow, while the flats at the Bay of Rest have rewarded fly-fishers with queenfish. The swell should drop from around 3m to 1.5m by Sunday evening but Saturday looks best for the boats with a lighter southerly wind.

There are some epic prizes up for grabs in this competition which runs for four months! Get your entries in now by clicking here!

Shore-based

Bundegi has been a hotspot this week with its resident hardyhead schools getting smashed by school mackerel, queenfish and golden trevally, while plenty of squid have been caught from the boat ramp. At Learmonth Jetty bream, whiting and a few mangrove jack have been the main fare, while Wapet Creek has held flathead and small mangrove jack. Morning and evening hardyhead bust-ups in the town marina have provided plenty of action on mangrove jack, some up to 55cm, along with queenfish and golden trevally. Two-inch and 3-inch soft plastics have been doing plenty of the catching as have stickbaits and surface poppers. Squid catches have been good from the marina’s outer wall at night-time, and from the rocks at the industrial area. Spangled emperor have been in good numbers from the Lighthouse down to Tantabiddi, where giant trevally have been targeted.

These great tips were courtesy of the friendly team at Tackle World Exmouth. Swing by their store for the best advice and gear ahead of your next trip!

Kalbarri catches

Boats

Between the rain fronts boats have hugged the cliffs and done well on pink snapper, while other crews have targeted lumps a kilometre or so straight out from the river mouth and caught pink snapper and Rankin cod. Good numbers of Samsonfish have been reported offshore, while a big coral trout along with lots of pinkies, was caught on a charter boat. Crayfishing has been steady and is expected to pick up after last week’s full moon. Sunday at this stage looks best on the forecast for the boats with a light to moderate easterly and decreasing swell.

Shore-based

Heavy rain has raised water levels in the Murchison River and the dirty water flowing down has produced good conditions for mulloway chasers. Mulloway have been on the small side up river but bigger models have come from the river mouth. The river mouth has also been the pick of the spots for tailor where it has been worthwhile casting poppers while having another rod out with a bait on the bottom for a mulloway. Bream to 40cm and cod to 50cm have been active in the river, mainly upstream from the marina, while blue swimmer crabs and mud crabs have been caught between the marina and the river mouth. Tailor fishing has been quiet at Wittecarra and also at Red Bluff, but the Bluff produced a nice spangled emperor this week and it has been a good spot for land-based squid chasers. Pink snapper around the 55cm mark have been caught from the cliffs but make sure you wear a lifejacket and fish with a friend if attempting this.

Shout out to Dean from Kalbarri Sports and Dive for his tips! Feel free to venture into his store to ask for advice if you're wetting a line around Kalbarri!
Geraldton catches
With the weather improving this week, @mat.svenson was back on the mack yak's off the Mid-West coast. Why paddle when these rockets can give you a tow.

Boats

Crews have encountered good numbers of pink snapper in a range of sizes either side of town on the 40-45m line, while off St Georges in 25-40m dhufish up to 8kg have ben landed along with baldchin groper and pink snapper. Few crews seem to be targeting squid this week, with most opting chase demersal species. It's still looking pretty rough this weekend but thankfully the worst of the storms has passed with Monday evening potentially holding some great boating conditions. Tuesday onwards is back to rougher waters.

Shore-based

Recent wild weather has cleared a lot of weed from the beaches resulting in good catches of mulloway up to a metre at the north side of the Greenough River mouth and at Southgates, with the latter also offering whiting up to 30cm that were also active after dark when the moon was up. There were more good whiting numbers at Separation Point, behind the Lives, north of the Lives and at Drummond Cove. The reefs at Drummond Cove have produced skippy up to a kilo, while back in town the Sail Inn groyne has also held skippy. The odd tailor has been mixed in with the whiting north of Drummond Cove and better tailor have come from Coronation Beach and the Buller River. Closer to town a decent tailor was landed from the point at Glenfield Beach. In general, the tailor bite has been very short, usually right on dark or just before the sun has risen. In the Greenough River bream to 35cm have been active at Devlins Pool, where a 35cm mangrove jack was caught this week. Regulars have been targeting squid on the north side of the Batavia Coast Marina.

Thanks to the team at Geraldton Sports Centre for their tips! They will happily provide you with great gear and the solid advice for your next fishing trip.
Lancelin catches
Jayson Spencer @jspencer_fishing ventured up to Cervantes this week for a drop off the coast and this solid dhuie was landed not too far offshore.

Boats

Some good dhufish came from the 30m depths, while skippy, dhufish and Samsonfish have been caught from inshore reefs. Around the 20m depths has been producing some solid sand whiting along with a few flathead. Inside the bay there were plenty of herring, snook and squid with some good size leather jacket around the reefy areas. Sunday is looking like the better boating day this weekend but Monday evening and Tuesday morning look even better at this stage.

Shore-based

The jetty has been fishing well for squid throughout the early mornings and sand whiting through the day, while at night we have seen some solid tailor to 50cm and plenty of herring. Tailor are still being caught along the beaches and for the best odds, try and find deeper areas that are relatively clear of weed or near wave and reef breaks as they do like to hunt within the white water. Small whaler sharks have been caught after dark along with school sized mulloway.

A big Recfishwest thanks to Peter Fullarton for his tips on what's biting around Lancelin each week! If you want Peter to put you on to the fish directly, make sure you check out his Tailored Treks Tours page. Always a great time and Peter knows the best spots around Lancelin like the back of his hand.

Esperance catches
We're not even halfway through the Chase the Kraken competition and the cash prize pool is just under $1,600! No hoods over 40cm have been entered into the comp yet, so make sure you get out there just like Gido and try find some beauties. Visit the crew at Southern Sports & Tackle for the best tips on what jigs are working best (Hint: Harimitsu jigs are their best sellers).

Boats

With poor weather keeping most boats close in, squidding has been a good option. Cook Rocks and the inside of Cull Island have held plenty of squid in 12m depths. Bigger squid have been caught in Esperance Bay but in fewer numbers. Big snook have been in the bay as well and have been taken on the troll, while the port area has offered sheltered fishing for big herring. Sand whiting have been caught at Lovers Cove and Dempster Head, while thumping sand whiting and the odd big King George whiting have been caught in 10m depths at Wylie Bay. While this morning was pleasant before the wind spiked in the afternoon, the next window looking decent for the boaties should be on Monday with moderate northerly winds and a low swell forecast.

Shore-based

Big flathead and nice skippy have been caught at 10-Mile Lagoon, while salmon and big skippy have been active at 11-Mile Beach. At 14-Mile Beach gummy sharks and big skippy have been landed, while Dunns Beach has held good numbers of big salmon. Good sand whiting have come from Lucky Bay and the flat rock there has produced squid. Bandy Creek Boat Harbour has fished well for King George whiting, while flathead and King George whiting have been caught from the town foreshore. Bull herring have been in good numbers at Taylor Street Jetty, while the Town Jetty has fished well in the afternoons for squid. Bream fishing at the lakes has slowed a little with the rising water levels but fish to 35cm have been caught at Wheatfield Lake.

Hats off to the very knowledgeable team at Southern Sports & Tackle for their tips! These guys love their fishing as well, so make sure you swing by their store for the best gear and advice before wetting a line around Esperance.

Great Southern catches

Boats

Conditions have been tough but crews have managed reasonable catches of squid in King George Sound, which has also held plenty of herring when burley has been used.  A couple of bigger boats got on to pink snapper around Vancouver Rock but found other demersal species hard to come by. Sunday doesn't look too bad on the forecast with a 2m swell and lighter easterly winds.

Shore-based

The salmon season does seem to be over but resident fish have been popping up at Cheynes, Sand Patch and Nanarup, and decent catches have come from Bremer Bay. Herring, tarwhine, flathead and bream have been caught near the creek mouths along Cheynes and at Nanarup. Around town squid chasers braving the wind and cold have found a few at the town marina, Emu Point and Frenchman Bay. These locations have also offered a few herring, small skippy and whiting. Small bream have been hanging around the mouths of the King and Kalgan rivers.

Cheers to the Trailblazers Albany crew for their tips this week! Swing by their store if you're after some top gear and advice ahead of your next fishing trip. Remember, you'll also catch just as many fish off the beaches than the rocks and it is always much safer to go with this option on the south coast.

South-West catches
It's been a while since we saw a South-West gummy, but the calmer conditions and a full moon period worked brilliantly for @leanbackfishing_ who plucked this nice fish from a gutter over the weekend.

Boats

Inshore waters have been firing with crews heading straight out from Bunbury landing dhufish and pink snapper in depths starting from 10m. Towards Binningup, good dhufish and some big King George whiting have been landed, while cuttlefish have been in good numbers just about everywhere. In Geographe Bay herring have been plentiful but squid have been a little harder to tempt with the water clarity not ideal. Those targeting squid on white or old-school baited jigs have done best. Kayak fishers have been getting into pink snapper off Forrest Beach and in Geographe Bay, towards Cape Naturaliste, with some catches boosted by the odd dhufish. Four-Mile Reef has fished well for snapper and a good mulloway was caught there this week. Pink snapper and the odd dhufish have been picked up from the isolated bommies in the bay. Sunday is looking like a very flat day out on the water so get out there.

Shore-based

It has mainly been drone fishers who did best on pink snapper this week. Forrest and Belvedere beaches have been the pick of the spots, mainly because the beaches north of Bunbury have heaps of weed. The end of Busselton Jetty has continued to be the hotspot for pink snapper and a few mulloway have been caught there as well. The jetty has also held heaps of herring and good numbers of squid. The lower and middle sections of the Collie River have served bream chasers best, while for easy fishing the inlet at Bunbury has produced soapy mulloway, bream and tarwhine on soft plastics.

Big cheers to Whitey's Tackle & Camping for their top fishing tips as always! If you're in Australind or Bunbury and are keen to wet a line throughout our South-West make sure you ask their very friendly team who love their fishing for advice and stock up on gear at their store. If you're in Busselton, the 2 Oceans Tackle team are also incredibly helpful.

If you're willing to do a bit of bush bashing up to some faster flowing water, there are some very fat and healthy trout doing the rounds. This cracker of a wild rainbow trout inhaled @alex__vermeulen's diver during an afternoon session this week in our South-West.
Decent brown trout have been caught by fly-fishers around Pemberton on Woolly Buggers but trout have been harder to find further north. Feeder streams into dams such as Drakesbrook Weir, Wellington Dam and Harvey Dam have however held a few rainbows which have taken small hard-bodied lures and Berkely PowerBait Trout Nuggets from time to time. Fishing for redfin perch has been much more productive with Harvey, Wellington and Glen Mervyn dams all holding good numbers of big fish, as has the Blackwood River around Nannup and the Collie and Capel rivers. Soft plastics and small natural-coloured hard-bodied lures have worked best.
Mandurah and surrounds
An evening send this week for @tackle_world_miami's Ash and Julie Ramm saw this nice pinkie coming over the side, with anchoring up with plenty of burley working nicely to lure these fish in.

Mandurah

Boats: Pink snapper catches have been excellent at Five-Fathom Bank with sunrise and sunset the hot bite times. Best results have come from anchoring on the sand close to the reef and floating a mulie in the burley trail. Plenty of solid skippy have been keeping the pinkies company. While they have not been in the big numbers of recent weeks, tuna have been worth targeting on the troll on the way out and the way back from Five Fathom. A few dhufish have been landed in the 30m depths off Dawesville along with big King George whiting. The KG's have only been in ones and twos but some have been over 60cm, so it has been worthwhile running a smaller hook on your dhufish rig. Big cuttlefish have also been caught off Dawesville and at Five Fathom. Crayfishers have been doing well dropping pots in 10-20m on sandy patches near the reef at James Service Reef and on Five Fathom. Conditions are looking good for the boaties this weekend so make the most of it.

Land-based: Good pink snapper and a few big mulloway have been taken at Tim's Thicket with both drone fishers and casters cashing in. Otherwise, herring have been the main fare from local beaches. Herring have also been in big numbers in the Dawesville Cut and the estuary end of the cut has offered small King George whiting. The cut had good numbers of squid on incoming or slack tides, while the Mandurah traffic bridges have held mainly herring. Bream catches have been excellent in the Murray River and the Serpentine River has held a few as well, while smaller bream have been caught form the estuary’s marinas and canals.

Thinking of wetting a line around Mandurah? These great tips were courtesy of the super friendly and helpful team at Tackle World Miami so make sure you swing by their store for the best tips and gear before your next fishing trip!

SECRET HARBOUR / PORT KENNEDY / ROCKINGHAM / SAFETY BAY / WARNBRO SOUND

Boats: Pink snapper have been the main event once again with many crews doing well targeting them along the Garden Island causeway. Other pink snapper hotspots have been the D9, Sulphur Rock, the gravel patches and wrecks in Cockburn Sound and around Garden Island. Skippy of various sizes have been in the burley trail at these locations as well. Before the weather turned the water murky excellent squid catches came from Garden Island, Mangles Bay and off Point Peron. At Mewstones, those targeting tailor on the exposed reefs have found it hard to get past the hordes of herring. It's looking very nice for the boats across this weekend.

Land-based: A few pink snapper were landed from Secret Harbour and Port Kennedy beaches this week and while tailor numbers have been down a little the fish have been of much better size, with most around the 50cm mark. A big mulloway was also caught at Port Kennedy this week. Herring have been thick along the beaches, while Woodman Point and the Ammo Jetty have fished well for herring, and for squid when the water has been clear. Blue mackerel have also been reported at these locations and garfish have shown up also. Rockingham and Palm Beach jetties have mainly held herring but the odd soapy mulloway catch has been reported. Point Peron has been the pick of the land-based squid spots and a few squid have come from the jetty at the Penguin Island spit.

These great fishing tips were provided by the friendly team at Compleat Angler & Camping World in Rockingham, so make sure you chat to their experienced crew in store and stock up before heading out!
Perth catches
Proper "drag pullers" as @saltyfishos put it! There are some big old winter kraken doing the rounds all around Perth at the moment and drifting over any of the nearshore weed beds is sure to get you a few of these delicious critters when the water is relatively clear. This beauty was landed off Mindarie but the weed off Hillarys, Cottesloe and Fremantle has also been thick with squid.

Boats

The bumper pink snapper season has been going strong and good catches have come inshore from Fremantle, inside and south of Rottnest Island, and at the Three-Mile Reef. Other good pinkie spots included off Mindarie and out from Two Rocks, with most of these locations also holding lots of skippy with big King George whiting also been among the bycatch. Dhufish reports have been thin with the weather limiting opportunities but they have been caught with pink snapper and baldchin groper out from Mindarie and one or two have come from deeper water at Rottnest Island when conditions allowed. Sand whiting have also fished well, inshore from Fremantle, at the Windmills and off City Beach in 10-15m. Squid catches have been good off South Fremantle and Coogee, while tailor, pink snapper and skippy have been caught at Stragglers. Sunday is looking like the better of the two days this weekend to send the boat out with a lower easterly wind and minimal swell.

Shore-based

The Swan River has thrown up some interesting catches this week. Big ocean-going tailor around the 50cm mark have been caught at night on large soft plastics and stickbaits under the lights at Canning Bridge, which suggests they could be at other locations such as the Narrows, Claremont Jetty and the water police jetty in North Fremantle. In the lower reaches, pink snapper either side of 50cm have been active, a step up from the 25-30cm models often caught in the river in late summer. Flathead seem to be widespread as well. Small flatties have been caught around Belmont and in the Canning River near Shelley, but better fish have come from the Swan’s middle reaches with a 60cm model caught and released in the lower Swan. One pair of anglers fishing around the Dome Cafe in East Fremantle spooked two flatties around the 50cm mark that were sitting just a metre or so from the water’s edge. What is normally the dominate species in the Swan this time of year, black bream, have been hard to find. Conventional wisdom suggests they should be well downriver by now, hanging about the yacht clubs, but catches have been reported up river at Ascot and Maylands. Targeting structure has been productive for bream chasers. In the ocean, North Mole is still fishing well for pink snapper and a few have been landed at Cottesloe Groyne and from the northern beaches, where drone fishers targeting pinks have also landed the odd mulloway. Chopper tailor, herring and skippy have been caught at Swanbourne and City Beach and it could be worth gearing up for bigger tailor at Cottesloe, Leighton and Trigg. Both the North and South Mole have been holding plenty of herring, and squid catches have also been good with North Mole having the edge. The Fremantle marinas and Fishing Boat Harbour could be worth a try for small Samsonfish, skippy, tarwhine, bream and herring, along with squid.

A big thanks to Anglers Fishing World in Fremantle for their great tips! These guys love their fishing just as much as we all do, so make sure you ask their super friendly team for advice and stock up before wetting a line off the land or boat!
