THE BEST ABALONE FISHING GEAR TO MAXIMISE YOUR SAFETY
Want to become a gun abalone fisher while also maximising your safety? Check out the short video above for the best gear to use when abalone fishing.

Not only will this make it easier for you when exploring the reef, it will also increase your safety and help you catch more abalone!

With the first abalone day of the summer kicking of tomorrow between 7-8am from Busselton Jetty up to Greenough River, just take note that the stretch between Perth and Greenough River will NOT be patrolled by Surf Life Saving WA volunteers, that means your safety needs to come first before heading into the water.

Safety Tips:
1) Check the forecast before entering the water;
2) Use the right gear;
3) Fish with a friend and look out for each other, and;
4) If you're not a confident swimmer, do not go in the water.

No abalone is worth your life. Click here for more info on this abalone season and how to stay safe.
Broome catches

Boats

Good northern mulloway have been mooching around the lumps in Roebuck Bay, where the odd tripletail has been taken around the moorings. A few bluebone have been landed close in at Entrance Point and also just off Gantheaume Point. Dampier Creek has been the pick of the local creeks for barramundi with good fish landed on live baits and also Jackall Squirrel hard-body lures. There have been a few threadfin salmon in Crab Creek and blue-nosed salmon have been in both Crab and Dampier Creeks. The odd threadfin salmon has come from the Fingers as well. Mud crabs have been quiet, but there have been a few pulled up at Barred Creek and also in Crab Creek. It should be relatively calm on the water again albeit for some rain and storms, so be wary of lightning.

Shore-based

In the Fitzroy River, Langi Crossing and Telegraph Pool have been reliable for barramundi but sharks have been a problem. In Broome, Town Beach Jetty has enjoyed a good run of barramundi at night but otherwise it has been quiet. Queenfish and trevally have been caught in Willie Creek and also at Entrance Point. When the wind has been favourable a couple of bluebone have been taken from Gantheaume Point in the mornings. Queenfish, mangrove jack and trevally have been caught from creek systems along the peninsula.

Big thanks to the crew from Tackle World Broome for their tips! Make sure you pay them a visit for the best gear and advice for your next fishing trip.
Exmouth catches
Exmouth has been a hotspot for pelagics and spearfishers such as @charliewattsie decided to go below the surface to take advantage, with this nice dolly providing a delicious feed.

Boats

There have been some lengthy weather windows but conditions have been mostly difficult on the west side. The Exmouth Game Fishing Club’s Heavy Tackle Tournament took place last weekend with 38 marlin tagged – 30 blues, four blacks and four striped in 600m-plus depths. Fishing was cancelled on the Friday but Saturday and Sunday were manageable. Big yellowfin tuna dominated the bycatch with 44kg and 46kg models landed and another beauty of 60kg taken the day after the competition finished. Closer in good numbers of reasonable-sized goldband snapper were landed in 100m-150m, along with the odd ruby snapper and pearl perch. At Helby Bank some good Spanish mackerel and giant trevally either side of 20kg have been landed but sharks have been a nuisance. Chinaman cod and spangled emperor have been taken on the edge of the lagoons. The cod have not been fussy about baits but the spangos have shown a liking for stickbaits. Good Spanish mackerel of more than 20kg have been taken at the Muirons and the odd sailfish has been out that way too, along with longtail tuna, coral trout and Rankin cod in 20m depths. In Exmouth Gulf, Cooper and Camplin shoals have been holding golden trevally around 14kg. There have been a few smaller Rankin cod in the Gulf, along with blue-lined emperor and the odd cobia. Squidding has become hard work, while deeper down the Gulf on the offshore flats fly-fishers have been getting a few permit. Both mornings this weekend look decent for the boaties but protect yourself from the heat.

Shore-based

A very happy John Hayes with his first ever permit landed on the Exmouth Gulf flats courtesy of @ningalooflyfishing.

At Mildura Wreck and the northern point at the top of Exmouth Gulf some nice bluebone have been keeping company with spangled emperor and have favoured fresh crab baits or imitation crab lures. The odd queenfish and trevally have been among the spangled emperor all the way around to Tantabiddi, which has produced a few good queenfish as well. Bundegi has been fishing very well and as usual has been holding plenty of bait. Locals were very surprised to see a 2.5m long saltwater crocodile cruising right next to Bundegi boat ramp this week, so keep a sharp eye if you're in the water there! Along with heaps of whiting, which are in plague proportions throughout the Gulf, queenfish and trevally have been about as well along with a few giant herring and the odd just-sized cobia, which have been swimming with rays and small sharks. At Learmonth school mackerel have been among the whiting schools, while another good stretch for whiting has been from the golf club headed south to Pebble Beach and also at Wapet Creek. Small prawn baits and surface lures have been doing well on the whiting. Wapet Creek has also held the odd mangrove jack and trevally, although the jacks have shut down a fair bit in the Gulf, as well as big flathead at the mouth. Deeper in the Gulf big flathead have been mooching around the rocky-sandy patches at Exmouth Station. In the town marina small cod, and queenfish have been caught along with trevally, including a few diamond trevally. Big queenfish have been spotted cruising the marina’s outer wall.

These great tips were courtesy of the friendly team at Tackle World Exmouth. Swing by their store for the best advice and gear ahead of your next trip!

Kalbarri catches
Shimano ambassador @nickihuntfishing and Leigh had another cracking tailor session off the rocks this week, with 60cm+ fish providing plenty of fight in the whitewash.

Boats

The conditions became more favourable from Wednesday onwards which was welcomed. Crayfishing has still be the main game with most crews doing well in 20-25m and finding a 50/50 split of whites and reds. Crews continued to troll for pelagics but no catches have been reported as of yet, although the conditions look manageable for the boaties on both mornings this weekend.

Shore-based

Good-sized tailor have been in reasonable numbers at Wittecarra and Red Bulff along with big dart and quite a few big herring. Many of the tailor have been over 50cm, while at Red Bluff some decent yellowfin whiting have been caught. Pot Alley and Goats Gulch have produced big tailor, pink snapper and a couple of baldchin groper. Frustrations has been producing big tailor and a few big mulloway. At Wagoe, tailor, pink snapper, mulloway and dart have been caught but no bigger pelagics. It’s been similar at Lucky Bay, where bigger tailor have been smashing into mullet schools and the odd pink snapper has been taken from the reef. The Murchison River has been fishing well with mulloway over 10kg taken quite a way up river and smaller models landed at the marina jetty, which has also been producing bream to 35cm and decent-sized mud crabs. Yellowfin whiting have been in reasonable numbers at the Sand Spit.

Shout out to Dean from Kalbarri Sports and Dive for his tips! Feel free to venture into his store to ask for advice if you're wetting a line around Kalbarri!
Geraldton catches

Boats

Crayfish have been good a bit quieter inshore but those targeting the 20m-plus depths have been doing well on a mix of whites and reds. It’s been the same story down at Dongara. Dinghy fishers have found a few squid around Point Moore after the conditions turned nice from around Wednesday onwards, but most boaties have been biding their time and waiting for the demersal ban to lift on Monday. The swell and wind will pick up substantially around then, so make the most of this good weather.

Shore-based

There have been a lot of pike around the Greenough River mouth and in town in front of the Mitchell and Brown whitegoods store. At Greenough’s second point tailor around 50cm have been feasting on hooked pike. Tarcoola Beach and Southgates have both fished well for tailor. Northampton District Angling Club members found plenty of good tailor at Horrocks on the weekend with most fish caught over 40cm and the ten or so fishers all getting their bag limits. One tailor went 80cm and another 65cm. They also caught dart in the 40-45cm range, small golden trevally and a few flathead, with one flathead lost at the shoreline estimated at 65cm. A small mulloway was also landed. Yabbies have been plentiful in local rivers, while in the Batavia Coast Marina small mangrove jack have been caught. Mangrove jack and bream have also been active in the Irwin River at Dongara.

Thanks to the team at Geraldton Sports Centre for their tips! They will happily provide you with great gear and the solid advice for your next fishing trip.
Lancelin catches

Boats

Boats have been concentrating on lobster pots, mostly holding off wetting a line until the opening of the demersal season on Monday. There have been heaps of blue mackerel schools passing through the 10-15m depths, with 5-10g halco twisties, micro jigs or bait chaser rigs all working a treat to stock up on some fresh bait. Small boats and kayaks have fished the bays sheltered waters with good results for herring, skippy, King George whiting and some decent squid. Saturday looks like the better day this weekend for the boats before the swell and wind starts to creep upwards from Sunday. Monday will see the wind and swell pick up which will make it tough to head out but Tuesday morning could hold a better window.

Shore-based

Summer chopper tailor to 45cm have been caught along most of the beaches as the sun sets and rises. Sharks have been in good numbers with some big ones snatching tailor off the lines, so maybe bring down some bigger gear and soak some baits away from town if you're keen to go toe to toe with these brutes. Snapper have been shy on the cast but short drone drops around 150m offshore close to the reef ledges has found good numbers just out of casting range.

Big thanks to Peter Fullarton for his tips on what's biting around Lancelin each week! If you want Peter to put you on to the fish directly, make sure you check out his Tailored Treks Tours page. Always a great time and Peter knows the best spots around Lancelin like the back of his hand.

Esperance catches

Boats

Esperance Bay has fished well for sand whiting and squid, while the closer-in islands have offered sweep, queen snapper and breaksea cod. Observatory Island has yielded lots of small nannygai and some decent Samsonfish and breaksea cod. Out wide there have been plenty of large nannygai, big Samsonfish and some decent yellowtail kingfish. At this stage Saturday looks manageable for the boats if you wish to duck out.

Shore-based

The Town Jetty has been firing for squid and big herring and has also offered a few garfish at night. At Bandy Creek Boat Harbour small King George whiting, solid skippy, heaps of herring and also flathead and flounder have been the order of the day, while the port authority viewing area has offered King George whiting around the 35cm mark. Bream in the 30-35cm range have been fishing well at the Bream Lakes. At Salmon Beach the odd salmon has been caught, while Fourth Beach has offered salmon and bull herring. Ten-Mile Beach has produced big flathead, along with herring and salmon, while 11-Mile has yielded herring, small skippy and the odd salmon. At Stockyards big flathead have been in good numbers along with herring and skippy and, at the start of the beach, big sand whiting. Alexander Bay has held lots of salmon and a few gummy sharks, while Israelite Bay has thrown up tailor, small mulloway, bronze whaler sharks and a few flathead.

Hats off to the very knowledgeable team at Southern Sports & Tackle for their tips! These guys love their fishing as well, so make sure you swing by their store for the best gear and advice before wetting a line around Esperance.

Great Southern catches

Boats

Some good numbers of blue swimmer crabs have been pulled up by dropnetters in Princess Royal Harbour, while King George Sound has held medium-sized King George whiting. The best spot for KG's this week was 150m or so out from the golf course at Middleton. Squid have been widespread throughout the Sound but not in great numbers and a bit of work has been needed to get a feed. The 3m depths have been the most consistent for them. Saturday at this stage looks best for the boats and outside of that looks windy and choppy.

Shore-based

Night-time scoopers have been getting their share of blue swimmer crabs in Princess Royal Harbour, while Frenchman Bay has fished well for squid, herring and King George whiting. Whalers Cove and Fisheries Bay have also offered good squid. Salmon chasers have found a few resident fish at Reef Beach, while bream fishing has improved in the King and Kalgan rivers and there have been whispers of mulloway activity there also. Emu Point has been pretty quiet but bread and butter species including herring, small skippy and squid have been caught at the town marina.

Cheers to the Trailblazers Albany crew for their tips this week! Swing by their store if you're after some top gear and advice ahead of your next fishing trip. Remember, you'll also catch just as many fish off the beaches than the rocks and it is always much safer to go with this option on the south coast.

South-West catches
Kingies this size 'pull like road trains' according to skilled Gyotaku artist and avid fisher @saltybonesgyotaku, give his page a follow to check out the awesome artwork he produces from quality captures in the South-West.

Boats

Blue swimmer crabs and crays have been the main game for boat fishers in Bunbury. Drop netters have been doing OK in the deeper channels and on the edge of the drop-offs but crayfishers using pots have had to work harder, with divers doing a lot better in 3-20m. It’s been recommended boaties drop their pots a little further north or south of town rather than straight out. Elsewhere, the odd decent King George whiting has been taken and a few squid have been about, but most people targeting these species have done much better in Geographe Bay. Tailor in the 35-40cm range have been consistent for those trolling in the Leschenault Estuary. Saturday is looking quite calm on the water at this stage while Sunday onwards is looking windy.

Shore-based

Yellowfin whiting have started to move up the estuary after having been congregated around the Bunbury Cut. They are now widespread and have been hitting vibes and surface lures with gusto. The Bunbury Cut has offered herring, chopper tailor and just-sized King George whiting, while the Collie River has been quiet on the bream front but fished well for soapy mulloway and a few school-sized models. Back, Buffalo and Belvedere Beaches have fished well for herring and chopper tailor, while Dalyellup has offered the same species plus flathead and flounder. Preston, Myalup and Binningup Beaches have held average-sized tailor, along with a few school mulloway and the odd one around a metre. Scooping for crabs in the estuary has been hard work and the sizes have been nothing flash. First and last light have been the best times but with the sea breeze often coming in early, first thing in the morning has been most productive. The Busselton Jetty has fished well for squid and also offered herring and sand whiting, while most of the beaches south of Busselton and around Dunsborough have produced yellowfin whiting, sand whiting and herring.

Big cheers to Whitey's Tackle & Camping for their top fishing tips as always! If you're in Australind or Bunbury and are keen to wet a line throughout our South-West make sure you ask their very friendly team who love their fishing for advice and stock up on gear at their store. If you're in Busselton, the 2 Oceans Tackle team are also incredibly helpful.

How's the striking pink colours on this healthy broodstock rainbow trout landed by @dready_krueger over the weekend. Make sure you give the freshwater fishing a crack before the heat settles in over the coming weeks!
Things have slowed down quite a bit and the big redfin perch that have been lurking at Wellington Dam seem to have shut up shop. Some smaller ones have been caught there and Harvey Dam has offered a few. Small numbers of brown and rainbow trout have been caught around Pemberton, while Honeymoon Pool on the Collie River, Harvey Dam and Drakesbrook Weir have been worth a crack for mainly small rainbows with the fishing best at first light.
Mandurah and surrounds

Mandurah

Boats: Crayfish have moved from the beach breaks and are now in the 15-18m depths and catches have been steady. Fishers dropping nets chasing blue swimmer crabs in the Peel-Harvey estuary have done best in the deeper water and near river entrances. The estuary is still brimming with tailor, herring and juvenile salmon which were being taking both on the troll and by boats anchored on the edge of drop-offs. A few decent King George whiting have been caught out towards the Bouvards, and also straight out from town, but overall sand whiting have fished much better with plenty to be found inside the Five-Fathom Bank. A few tuna schools have been encountered on the 28-30m lines, yellowtail kingfish have been hard to find, but Samsonfish and chunky skippy have been plentiful around offshore structure. Inshore squid catches have started to pick up off Seascapes, Melros and Falcon. Saturday looks decent on the forecast.

Land-based: Crab scoopers have found a few mainly after dark, but have not been doing as well as dropnetters. Yellowfin whiting continued to fire, both in numbers and sizes, with the best catches on the flats behind the Novara store or at South Yunderup. Cleaner water flowing through the Dawesville Cut has produced better squid catches there along with herring and a few chopper tailor. It’s a similar story at the Mandurah bridges. Tailor catches have been good from local beaches either side of town and sand whiting have been in decent numbers as well. The weed banks on calmer beaches such as Falcon and Melros should start offering squid for shore fishers as well. Nice-sized bream and soapy mulloway have been in the Serpentine and Murray rivers.

Thinking of wetting a line around Mandurah? These great tips were courtesy of the super friendly and helpful team at Tackle World Miami so make sure you swing by their store for the best tips and gear before your next fishing trip!

SECRET HARBOUR / PORT KENNEDY / ROCKINGHAM / SAFETY BAY / WARNBRO SOUND

Boats: Blue swimmer crab activity has slowed in Cockburn Sound and getting a feed has become harder. Many anglers will likely give it a rest until well into the new year. As for crayfish, most have moved out to the 20m-plus depths with catches consistent towards the Five Fathom Bank and behind Garden Island. King George whiting have been quiet, but sand whiting have been about in their usual spots including Safety Bay, Mangles Bay, behind Penguin Island, on Parmelia Bank and inside of Garden Island. Squid also were in good numbers at these spots in a variety of depths but the sizes are nothing special, while broken ground anywhere in Cockburn Sound or along the Garden Island causeway has been producing solid skippy. Tailor chasers who have been doing well throwing lures and unweighted mulies into the white water at Mewstones, have been smoked by what could be yellowtail kingfish or big Samsonfish, with cray divers reporting seeing small schools of yellowtail kingfish. Saturday looks better than Sunday at this stage.

Land-based: Tailor catches at local beaches continued nicely across both mornings and evenings, with catches reported even in the afternoons when the sea breeze comes in. Good fish around the 40cm mark have been consistently caught on lures and baits at Port Kennedy, Secret Harbour and Long Point and herring and a few school mulloway have been swimming with the tailor. The beach near the grain terminal and also the Penguin Island spit have been producing yellowfin whiting on the warmer days, while the spit has also offered sand whiting, herring and the odd flathead and flounder. The Henderson rocks have produced the odd squid and Point Peron has held a few too, along with herring. Chopper tailor and herring have been the main catches at Palm Beach and Rockingham jetties and also at Woodman Point and the Ammo Jetty, with squid a chance at all these locations.

These great fishing tips were provided by the friendly team at Compleat Angler & Camping World in Rockingham, so make sure you chat to their experienced crew in store and stock up before heading out!
Perth catches

The sweetest meat going around. There have been some decent reports of blue swimmer crabs coming from the Swan River and Cockburn Sound, with @saltyfishos having good luck further up river.

Boats

A nice mix of sand and King George whiting have been rewarding anglers fishing inshore off South Fremantle and Coogee, in the bays at Rottnest Island, off Hillarys and at the Windmills. Sand whiting have been more prolific off Cottesloe and City Beach, while big King George whiting have been caught at the Three-Mile Reef. Squid catches have been widespread although the sizes have been modest with the Windmills, Hillarys, inshore at Rottnest and Coogee the better spots. The bays at Rottnest Island have also held heaps of herring, while tuna and yellowtail kingfish have been taken at the West End and Samsonfish have come from the deeper depths out the back. At Stragglers, tailor chasers have done well fishing in the white water and several have been busted off, likely by Samsonfish or yellowtail kingfish. A few solid skippy have been feeding on the scraps underneath the tailor schools there. Crayfishers who based themselves at Rottnest Island on the northern and southern sides seemed to have got Christmas lunch sorted, while the northern metro reefs seem to be fishing better for crays, especially in 20m-plus depths. In the Swan River good numbers of blue swimmer crabs have been pulled up in Blackwall Reach, around Claremont, in Mosman Bay and also at the old brewery and the Narrows, while a very impressive crab was plucked from the drop-off at Como this week. Tailor fishers have continued to do well trolling anywhere downstream from the Narrows, while mulloway chasers have been haunting Blackwall Reach and Mosman Bay at night. Saltwater Flyrodders of WA held a competition in the Swan last weekend and quite a few fishers used their boats’ electric motors to target flathead on the flats around Claremont. Saturday is looking like a very calm day out on the water for boat fishers.

Shore-based

Tailor chasers have been doing well off Cottesloe Groyne and the North and South Moles, while smaller tailor have been swimming with herring, skippy, sand whiting and flathead at Swanbourne, Floreat and City Beach. The South Fremantle rock walls have been fishing well for herring, skippy, whiting, flathead and chopper tailor with anglers doing well on micro jigs and small Twistys. Squid have been about in these locations but not at the Moles, which other than tailor have offered mainly herring. Decent tailor have come from Trigg and the beaches north of Hillarys, and right up to Yanchep Lagoon, where many anglers have been taking advantage of the strong easterly winds in the mornings to send their baits and lures out some distance. There’s been a big mix of species caught in the Swan River, especially in the salty lower reaches where snook to 40cm have been swimming among the tailor schools and plenty of skippy around the 30cm mark have been landed. Yellowfin whiting catches have picked up for those happy to fish the Swan’s lower reaches late at night, and they have been often sighted but rarely landed on the flats during the day. Tailor catches have come down a little but most jetties in the lower Swan have held a few, as did Applecross Jetty and Canning Bridge. They have also been active at night under the lights at the Narrows. Another prized Swan species, the giant herring, has proved elusive but a good tip has been follow the warmer current lines and keep an eye out for diving birds, hence it’s not surprising giant herring are often plucked out of tailor schools. Flathead chasers noticed a lot of bait jumping around Claremont last weekend but the baitfish were being chased by regular herring, rather than giant herring or tailor. There have been some cracking flathead and flounder sessions in the lower Swan this week. On Sunday, one angler who fished the Claremont-Nedlands area landed fish from the the high 30s up to a 56cm model, which were all released safely, along with a couple of cracking high 30cm flounder. Another big flattie in the mid 50s was landed by a young angler at the Swan Yacht Club in East Fremantle. As for the better spots for flathead and flounder: Claremont, Nedlands, Dalkeith, Freshwater Bay, East Fremantle, North Fremantle, Bicton and Point Walter. Don’t’ discount the Narrows, the Causeway, Applecross, Como, Burswood, Optus Stadium and Maylands for flathead either. Those scooping blue swimmer crabs have fared best at night in the lower reaches. The Swan’s middle and upper reaches have started to fish well for bream, which have pushed up as far as Guildford. Basically bridges, jetties and anywhere with structure should produce. Bream, along with a few soapy mulloway, have been taken at the Narrows, Canning Bridge, Mt Henry Bridge, the Causeway, Optus Stadium, Belmont, Redcliffe and Maylands. Soft plastics have worked well on both species.

A big thanks to Anglers Fishing World in Fremantle for their great tips! These guys love their fishing just as much as we all do, so make sure you ask their super friendly team for advice and stock up before wetting a line off the land or boat!
