THE BEST ABALONE FISHING GEAR TO MAXIMISE YOUR SAFETY
Want to become a gun abalone fisher while also maximising your safety? Check out the short video above for the best gear to use when abalone fishing.

Not only will this make it easier for you when exploring the reef, it will also increase your safety and help you catch more abalone!

With the second abalone day of the summer kicking of tomorrow between 7-8am from Busselton Jetty up to Greenough River, just take note that the stretch between Perth and Greenough River will NOT be patrolled by Surf Life Saving WA volunteers, that means your safety needs to come first before heading into the water.

Safety Tips:
1) Check the forecast before entering the water;
2) Use the right gear;
3) Fish with a friend and look out for each other, and;
4) If you're not a confident swimmer, do NOT go in the water.

No abalone is worth your life. Click here for more info on this abalone season and how to stay safe
Broome catches

Boats

Good catches of tripletail have been taken around the moorings and among floating debris in Roebuck Bay, but otherwise fishing has been quiet. Crab Creek has offered barramundi and threadfin salmon and has also held some good mud crabs. A few small barramundi have been taken from Dampier Creek, while the odd threadfin salmon has been landed at the Fingers. While the water should be quite flat with generally low westerly winds this week, the rain will stick around and storms are expected to roll in from around Wednesday.

Shore-based

The Fitzroy River has been firing for barramundi with metre-plus fish coming from the Cuttings and Telegraph Pool, along with plenty of 90cm models. Live baits have worked well and so have large soft plastics, including Raptor Fizz Baits and Berkely Shimmer-Pro Rigs. With most of creeks inaccessible and the Port Jetty closed, fishing around town has been limited. Town Beach Jetty has been quieter than usual, but it has thrown up a few small trevally and queenfish, with these species also caught at Entrance Point.

Big thanks to the crew from Tackle World Broome for their tips! Make sure you pay them a visit for the best gear and advice for your next fishing trip.
Exmouth catches

Boats

Windows of good weather have rewarded crews targeting billfish on the west side with blue marlin being raised and landed in good numbers out wide, while closer in black marlin and big sailfish have been caught. Tuna have been a prominent bycatch in the deeper depths, while dolphinfish have been plentiful inshore. Bottom fishers have found good numbers of goldband snapper in 80-100m, while further out ruby snapper and big cod have been landed. Spanish mackerel have been active on Helby Bank and along the edge of Exmouth Reef, while the lagoons on the west side have offered Chinaman cod and the odd spangled emperor, with coral trout turning up for those floating out a mulie or casting a stickbait. The Muirons have been fishing well for Spanish mackerel and quite a few wahoo, with good numbers of red emperor and small Rankin cod in the 40m depths. In Exmouth Gulf, queenfish around the metre mark have been taken on the Shoals, cobia have been active and blue-line emperor have been caught in good numbers. High water temperatures have slowed squid activity, but missions at first light and in the late afternoons have produced a few. It's looking like another rough week out on the water with 2m+ swell and moderate south-westerly winds. The Gulf should hold the most shelter but this kind of weather usually bodes well for billfishing.

Shore-based

Whiting have been plentiful right along Exmouth Gulf down to the Bay of Rest, but with the high water temperatures they have been holding deeper in around 2m. The warm water seems to have fired up flathead in the Gulf and they have been taking vibes and soft plastics with gusto. Learmonth Jetty has produced queenfish, the odd school mackerel, trevally and a few mangrove jack around the pylons. Wapet Creek has fished well for whiting and flathead, while mangrove jack have been hitting hard-bodied diving lures, soft plastics and pieces of peeled prawn there. Big queenfish have been spotted at the Bundegi boat ramp at first light, while mangrove jack and big bream have been hanging around the jetty. The town marina has produced cod, bream and queenfish, while the stretch from VLF Bay around to the Lighthouse has yielded golden trevally, a few small giant trevally, spangled emperor, queenfish and bluebone right on first light. The Tantabiddi to Winderabandi stretch has offered spangled emperor, queenfish, trevally, cod and some good flathead.

These great tips were courtesy of the friendly team at Tackle World Exmouth. Swing by their store for the best advice and gear ahead of your next trip!

Kalbarri catches

Boats

Crews heading offshore have picked up nice pink snapper and out wider have landed good dhufish, red emperor and big cod. Pelagic action has picked up in red hot numbers just yet, although a 20kg Spanish mackerel was landed late last week at the Sand Patch and some slightly smaller ones were caught this week which is a good sign of what's to come over the coming weeks. North of town has fished slightly better than south for both demersals and Spaniards. While it will be pretty choppy this week, Saturday and Sunday are currently holding the best windows for boaties on the forecast with a swell just under 2m and lower southerly winds. Outside of that will see mostly white caps.

Shore-based

It's been a cracker of a week for land-based fishers. There has been good tailor action at Wittecarra and Red Bluff with dart and big herring joining the party. Wittecarra also produced mulloway earlier this week. Some big tailor have been landed at Back Beach and Chinamans, with one angler backing up an 80cm greenback with a 75cm model. Chinamans has also been holding big yellowfin whiting and a few big tings have been caught over the other side as well. Near Frustrations and Oyster Reef, quad-bike fishers got on to decent tailor. The coastal gorges have offered good tailor, pink snapper and golden trevally, while smallish mulloway and average-sized tailor have been the main catches at Wagoe. At Lucky Bay herring, tailor and whiting have been in good numbers. The Murchison River has produced reasonable mulloway, while blue swimmer crabs have been caught near the mouth and mud crabs have been active further up river. Bream around 40cm have been mooching around structure along with some big cod. A 77cm cod was picked up in a crab net near the marina. A few yellowfin whiting have been caught at the Sand Spit.

Shout out to Dean from Kalbarri Sports and Dive for his tips! Feel free to venture into his store to ask for advice if you're wetting a line around Kalbarri!
Geraldton catches

Boats

Crayfish have moved out to deeper water but numbers have dropped off. Thankfully, demersal catches have been decent, although southerly winds have been very strong and the crews out wider in bigger boats have been slapped with rough conditions. Morning windows have offered a little respite from the wind and good dhufish have been landed in 10-30m, while further out pink snapper have been more prevalent and baldchin groper have been in good numbers in 20-40m out from Sunset Beach. Baitfish have been harassed offshore which suggests pelagic action could be on the up, with a beauty of a 28kg Spanish mackerel speared by a diver in waters south of Point Moore last week. She's looking pretty rough this week for the boaties. Other than brief windows on midday on Sunday and Monday at this stage it's looking like only the larger boats can potentially have a crack.

Shore-based

Weed and strong surges have made a mess of beach fishing. The fish have been around, but some prospecting has been required and perfect conditions one day have often been lousy the next. Greenough’s first and second points have been reliable for tailor although sizes have been down, while around town herring have shown up in reasonable numbers. Anglers have battled weed at the Southgates reef to land a few tailor and smallish tailor have been taken at Pages Beach. Morning Reef headed north of Drummond Cove produced good numbers of whiting last weekend, while youngsters using bream gear to flick lures from the rock walls in town have been catching and releasing cod up to 70cm.

Thanks to the team at Geraldton Sports Centre for their tips! They will happily provide you with great gear and the solid advice for your next fishing trip.
Lancelin catches
Nothing like playing a bit of guitar at sunset. Brandon Wood was chasing big tailor at Cervantes when this powerful guitarfish started zinging out line. Released to fight another day after this great snap.

Boats

Boats have been out in force over the holiday period with plenty of great catches. Those heading out deeper have been onto the larger dhufish and have been making the most of the trip by trying the FAD's, with schools of baitfish and dolphinfish lurking around. There were plenty of tuna schools 30-35m depths for the boats who find the trip out to the FAD's a little too far. Better numbers of baldchin have come from the 30m depths, while pink snapper were in plague proportions along the nearshore reefs. Around the bay were large blue spot flathead, tailor, snook, herring, King George whiting and skippy, which are becoming a regular visitor in the burley trail. Midday on Sunday and early on Monday should hold the best windows this week before bigger swell and stronger southerly winds return next week.

Shore-based

The beaches have cleared up nicely with lots of blue water and little seaweed to be seen, making casting out a dream. Sunrise and sunset has seen a good tailor bite, with a few chomping on baits throughout the day. Dawn has been the best window for pink snapper where there is a bit of reef off the cast, while drone drops 200-300m out have seen a longer bite window. The snapper are ranging from undersized to some chunky 4-5kg fish.

Big thanks to Peter Fullarton for his tips on what's biting around Lancelin each week! If you want Peter to put you on to the fish directly, make sure you check out his Tailored Treks Tours page. Always a great time and Peter knows the best spots around Lancelin like the back of his hand.

Esperance catches
@tnttietjens opening up his account for 2025 which a solid slab of a mulloway!

Boats

Nannygai to 3.5kg have been landed at Mondrain Island, while crews on bigger boats caught monster skippy to 7kg and good mixed bags of demersal species at Termination Island. Dhufish catches have been consistent at Giants Rock, while big Samsonfish have been taken at Waterwitch. Squid fishing has been good at Cook Rocks, while there have been lots of fat sand whiting between Observation Island and Observation Point. Esperance Bay has fished well for herring, squid and snook. There is some decent boating windows opening up over the next few mornings with lower winds and a swell of around 1.6m, so make the most of it before the stronger winds return.

Shore-based

Israelite Bay has held good numbers of gummy sharks along with mulloway and big flathead, while Thomas River has fished well for big skippy and mulloway. At Dunns Beach, gummy sharks have been pulled from the deeper holes, while Wylie Bay and Stockyards saw salmon, small mulloway and skippy turning up. Warrenup Beach has offered gummy sharks and salmon, while salmon have also been taken at Observatory and Fourth beaches. Big King George whiting have been caught at the town foreshore and Bandy Creek Boat Harbour, while squid, herring and garfish have been caught after dark at the Town and Taylor Street jetties. Bream fishers have done well at Quallilup Lake.

Hats off to the very knowledgeable team at Southern Sports & Tackle for their tips! These guys love their fishing as well, so make sure you swing by their store for the best gear and advice before wetting a line around Esperance.

Great Southern catches
This 15kg dhuie couldn't resist the @vexedfishing jig dropped down off the coast of Albany by @andrew_ward_3 this week when the weather provided a brief window!

Boats

Last week a lot of crews headed out when weather windows opened and a few that got to the coral ground did well on breaksea cod, pink snapper, queen snapper and dhufish. In King George Sound, squid were plentiful and King George whiting were widespread and in good numbers. Thankfully today and pretty much all of the weekend along with early on Monday is looking great for a send out in the boats, so make the most of it.

Recfishwest's Sedin 'Sardine' Hasanovic ducked out for a drop off Bremer Bay while he was down there coordinating the SunSmart fishing clinic in town and plucked this cracker of a breaksea which was tickling 50cm.

Shore-based

Lots of squid combos have been sold at Trailblazers this week and they have been put to good use, with nice catches coming from Whalers Cove and Frenchman Bay. Frenchman Bay has also fished well for herring and King George whiting, while herring and small skippy have been at the town marina along with squid. Emu Point has held squid as well, along with a few herring and whiting, while snook have turned up at times. In Princess Royal Harbour scoop netters have been picking up blue swimmer crabs, while the King and Kalgan rivers have produced bream and there have been whispers of mulloway catches. Nice mixed bags of salmon, tarwhine and herring have come from Sand Patch, while at Gull Rock juvenile salmon, herring and whiting have been taken. Reports of resident salmon have also come from Bremer Bay way, while Cheynes Beach has held tarwhine, resident salmon, herring and skippy.

Cheers to the Trailblazers Albany crew for their tips this week! Swing by their store if you're after some top gear and advice ahead of your next fishing trip. Remember, you'll also catch just as many fish off the beaches than the rocks and it is always much safer to go with this option on the south coast.

South-West catches
The 15th annual Mandalay Beach Fishing Competition kicks off on Tuesday, January 14 from 3-8pm! This event is incredibly popular with locals and tourists and Recfishwest is proud to support such a great community event. For more details, click here

Boats

Plenty of pink snapper have been landed with good hauls often taken well in sight of land either side of Bunbury, while other crews have gone out to 60m depths and also been successful. The 35-40m depths have been fishing well and crews have had success either anchoring and using burley or when drifting. Either way, the pinkies seem to be hungry, although those using burley have often had Samsonfish crash the party. Dhufish have been far less prolific, but some 70cm-plus fish have been landed. Some good ones have been following the crays out to deeper water of Binningup, while towards Busselton dhufish have been in good numbers and also in Geographe Bay, especially on the reefs out from Siesta Park and Dunsborough. Squid have been hit and miss around Bunbury but plenty have been taken in Geographe Bay, along with King George whiting and sand whiting. Trolling for chopper tailor has been productive throughout the Leschenault Estuary, while drop netters have found blue swimmer crabs to be widespread in the system and in better numbers. Kayak fishers launching from the Dolphin Road ramp have been doing well on squid in 5m and have also found a few King George whiting, but those who launch from Canal Rocks have not reported demersal catches recently. The forecast is looking great across the next few mornings for the boaties, so make sure you're courteous to others at the ramps and it would be wise to try get back before that midday wind spike.

Shore-based

Local beaches have been fishing well with chopper tailor and herring dominating catches at Buffalo, Belvedere, Dalyellup, Binningup, Preston and Myalup. South of Bunbury saw drone fishers picking up pink snapper. At Dalyellup, nice yellowfin whiting have been caught and good yellowfin whiting have also been biting at Preston Beach. The Bunbury Cut and Back Beach have been fishing well for herring and chopper tailor, while whiting chasers have continued to do well on the flats. The tings are widespread, but Pelican Point and Cathedral Avenue have been good areas to target. Scoopers have had to work harder for a feed of blue swimmer crabs than drop netters, but early mornings and late evenings have been the better times. Squid have been in good numbers at the Busselton Jetty, along with herring and a few whiting, while sheltered beaches towards Dunsborough have produced herring and yellowfin whiting.

Big cheers to Whitey's Tackle & Camping for their top fishing tips as always! If you're in Australind or Bunbury and are keen to wet a line throughout our South-West make sure you ask their very friendly team who love their fishing for advice and stock up on gear at their store. If you're in Busselton, the 2 Oceans Tackle team are also incredibly helpful.

You'll pay top dollar for marron in a restaurant and nothing beats eating these critters fresh off the BBQ with a slab of butter, garlic and herbs poured all over them. For the best marron fishing tips from Recfishwest's Matt 'marron whisperer' Gillett, click here!
Most freshwater fishers have put the rod in the rack for now. Many will be targeting marron, while others who prefer wetting a line will be waiting for the short marron season and the school holidays to end as camping and water-skiing make targeting trout and redfin perch difficult. Early reports suggest the marron season has opened well, with bigger dams such as Waroona and Wellington holding good numbers. Recfishwest's Matt Gillett is an avid and experienced marron fisher and some of his best tips include:
  • Pick a night with less wind to help spot the marron feeding on the chook pellets easier.
  • Marroning on a waning moon or new moon is better.
  • Pick the highest quality head torch you can.
  • Don’t put the chook pellets out too early otherwise the ducks might nab them! Don’t put them out too far out either, the marron will come close to the bank for a feed.
  • Look for a stretch of bank where logs and rocks are submerged in the water – it’s the kind of habitat the marron like.
Mandurah and surrounds

Mandurah

Boats: The big news this week was the 10kg mackerel landed by an angler casting a lure in the middle area of the western side of the Bouvard. Cray divers at the back of the reef there and at Melros have reported seeing plenty of Spaniards in sizes up to a metre, so demersal chasers out that way should consider trolling lures to and from their dhufish and pink snapper spots. The 40m depths at the Bouvards, Five-Fathom Bank and off Dawesville have all produced decent dhufish, baldchin groper and pink snapper. Pink snapper chasers have done well when either anchoring and burleying or on the drift, while smaller baits have accounted for big King George whiting in 30m depths. Sand whiting fishers have had no trouble getting a feed inside the Five-Fathom Bank, while on the Five plenty of tuna schools have been spotted but the fish have been reluctant to hit lures. Tailor have been plentiful in the estuary and have been swimming with herring, juvenile salmon and skippy. Drop netters have been getting good feeds of blue swimmer crabs in most parts of the estuary, with South Yunderup a popular starting point. You're in luck for the weather this weekend with early on Saturday and Sunday holding decent weather.

Land-based: Yellowfin whiting have been in big numbers in the estuary but have sometimes been reluctant to bite in the middle of the day, however most people targeting them have done well and have landed herring, tailor and juvenile salmon as bycatch. Flats that are near a channel like those at Boundary Island and Dawesville have been the better spots. For those scooping crabs, Coodanup and South Yunderup have been firing. The Dawesville Cut has been covered in squid ink, while tailor, herring and garfish have been caught as well. Chopper tailor and herring have also been active at the town bridges. Tailor fishing has been consistent from White Hills right up to Madora Bay, with the late afternoon bite being very reliable this week with some of the bigger tailor coming from Silver Sands. A few small mulloway have been swimming with the tailor schools at White Hills, while most beaches have also held herring.

This Sunday from 8-10am will see the 10th annual Falcon Lions Club Tackle World Miami Kids Fishing Competition kicking off! Ash Ramm from Tackle World Miami will be down providing some great fishing tips for kids and parents and with a sausage sizzle on offer along with goodies bags and great catches of whiting and tailor up for grabs - you don't want to miss it! Make sure you're there at Falcon Bay for registrations at 8am and feel free to bring your own rods down.

Thinking of wetting a line around Mandurah? These great tips were courtesy of the super friendly and helpful team at Tackle World Miami so make sure you swing by their store for the best tips and gear before your next fishing trip!

SECRET HARBOUR / PORT KENNEDY / ROCKINGHAM / SAFETY BAY / WARNBRO SOUND

Boats: Pink snapper and dhufish have been taken behind Garden Island, between Rottnest and Carnac Islands and out towards the Five-Fathom Bank. Good dhufish have been landed in as little as 8m right out to 50m, while pink snapper have dominated catches in 15-20m. Squid and Vexed Bottom Meats have worked well on both species, while those putting on a smaller hook have landed some big King George whiting as bycatch. Smaller King George whiting and sand whiting have been plentiful in Mangles Bay, inside of Garden Island and behind Penguin Island. Solid skippy have been landed on the broken ground in Cockburn Sound, while tailor around 40cm have been caught at Mewstones. Squid catches have tapered off, but a few have been found in deeper water. Blue swimmer crab sizes and numbers have picked up in Cockburn Sound. The earlier you can duck out in the boats this weekend the better, with the calm southerly starting to get stronger from around 10am across both mornings.

Land-based: Tailor have continued their good run on local beaches with Port Kennedy, Secret Harbour, Warnbro, Long Point and Kwinana all producing fish around 40cm in the early mornings and late evenings. School mulloway have been among the tailor schools and herring and sand whiting have been caught throughout the day. Yellowfin whiting have been active near the grain terminal, but the sizes have not been great. Divers in Cockburn Sound have continued to do better on blue swimmer crabs than their drop-netting and scooping counterparts and have found plenty in 2-5m. They have also spotted some big flathead and nice-sized whiting when diving in the late afternoons. At the Penguin Island sand spit flathead, flounder and sand whiting have been mixed in with herring and chopper tailor. Herring have been taken at Point Peron, while Woodman Point, the Ammo Jetty and Palm Beach and Rockingham jetties have held mainly herring and chopper tailor.

These great fishing tips were provided by the friendly team at Compleat Angler & Camping World in Rockingham, so make sure you chat to their experienced crew in store and stock up before heading out!
Perth catches
It's been a cracker of a summer season so far for Swan River flounder, with Recfishwest's Eligh Quigley finding a few nice fish along with several flathead courtesy of the trusty Vexed Buckabou jig. Looks like this flounder has survived an attack from something previously based on the chunk missing.

Boats

Demersal activity has been steady rather than spectacular, with pink snapper the dominant species, especially off Hillarys. A few dhufish have been taken south of Rottnest Island and off Two Rocks and Ocean Reef, with breaksea cod among the bycatch. Samsonfish have been stretching arms behind Rottnest, while the island’s bays have fished well for squid and King George whiting. Squid have been in deeper water of around 5m or so, and often heavier jigs have been needed to combat the current. Good mixed bags of skippy, sand whiting and King George whiting have been taken off South Fremantle and at the Windmills, while tailor have been active around the white water at Stragglers. Small dolphinfish have been caught at the metro FADs and amberjack have been at the fish towers. Sand whiting numbers have remained decent off Cottesloe. In the Swan River, plenty of tailor have been about from the Narrows downstream, with Alfred Cove and Canning Bridge among the better spots. A few giant herring have been taken by anglers trolling for tailor in the middle to lower reaches. Crabs have mostly been in the deeper pockets of the Swan, with Mosman Bay, Claremont and Applecross all producing but they have also pushed deep into the Canning River and have been pulled out from the mud around the Shelley Bridge. A few big mulloway have been caught in Mosman Bay and at Blackwall Reach. If you're wanting to make the most of the conditions this weekend then it's best to duck out as early as you can given the southerly winds will come roaring in across both mornings quickly from around 10:30am. North of Rottnest, Carnac and Garden Island will hold the most sheltered water. Next week will see the stronger southerly winds return.

Shore-based

Tailor fishing has been consistent with Floreat, Cottesloe and Port Beach producing a few chopper tailor along with plenty of herring most mornings. Nice tailor have been caught from the Coogee rock wall, while Brighton Beach and Quinns have yielded good fish as well. Drone fishers on the northern beaches have landed tailor, the odd pink snapper and even a couple of small baldchin groper, which were taken 350m out. Herring and chopper tailor have been the main fare at North and South Moles with squid a chance at both spots. Scaly mackerel made an appearance around the E Shed in Fremantle Harbour and were harassed by big mulloway, with a couple of big silver ghosts pulled from the fray. Those after a feed of sand whiting should target the old power station near Coogee, while the South Fremantle rock walls have held herring, tarwhine, chopper tailor, bream and skippy. The rock walls held a few squid too, with the Fremantle Sailing Club wall fishing well. At South Beach, divers have been swimming out and picking up blue swimmer crabs. Tailor catches have been excellent in the Swan River, with those fishing the jetties and drop-offs downstream from the Narrows finding plenty of solid fish and often bull herring in the mix as well. Late-night yellowfin whiting specialists have been doing well at East Fremantle but flathead and flounder catches in the lower reaches have slowed. Many of the flathead have been very small in the past week but flounder, although down in numbers, have been in better sizes. Good spots for both species in the lower reaches have been Bicton, Point Walter and Claremont. Scoop netters have had to work hard for a feed of blue swimmer crabs but night-time missions in the Swan have often paid off. Bigger flathead have been taken up river from the Narrows along with bream, which have favoured structure. Better spots for flathead have been the Causeway, Optus Stadium and Maylands. Bream catches have been best at Optus, Maylands, Garratt Road Bridge and as far up as Guildford in the Swan and Mt Henry Bridge and Shelley in the Canning River. Soapy mulloway have been at these locations too and several giant herring have been hooked around Maylands, with at least one fish landed. The best weather windows for land-based metro fishing is the mornings but once the wind and chop arrives tailor are a good chance in the river.

A big thanks to Anglers Fishing World in Fremantle for their great tips! These guys love their fishing just as much as we all do, so make sure you ask their super friendly team for advice and stock up before wetting a line off the land or boat!
