Your rod, reel and biceps will certainly know when an estuary cod decides to smash your bait, plastic or jig if it's dropped in front of their gobs. These beauties are in great numbers all around the artificial King Reef off Exmouth.

Broome catches
Catching barra can be sweaty work so the copious amounts of rain this week was a handy way to cool off for young Flynn with @flying.foam in our Kimberley region. Great to see the lures being handed out to fishers donating mangrove jack frames are producing the goods! More details on how you can receive this lure here!

Boats

After a deluge wiped out fishing last weekend, things are slowly starting to pick up heading into the neap tides this week. Crab Creek has been consistent for barramundi and mud crabs, while the Fingers has offered mud crabs, threadfin salmon and barramundi. Tripletail had been fishing well in Roebuck Bay before the rain arrived and with all the debris floating in the bay they should be worth targeting, while the neap tides should favour those chasing northern mulloway and bluebone around the bay’s lumps and ledges. It should be relatively calm and flat on the water this week so enjoy yourselves if you decide to send it.

Shore-based

The Fitzroy River is flowing well which will likely limit fishing activity until water levels fall again, but before the downpour good barramundi had been caught at Telegraph Pool, the Cuttings and Langi Crossing. The Town Jetty has been consistent for trevally and queenfish, while bigger queenfish have been encountered by those flicking metals near the boat ramp at Entrance Point. Willie Creek has offered a few small barramundi.

Big thanks to the crew from Tackle World Broome for their tips! Make sure you pay them a visit for the best gear and advice for your next fishing trip.
Exmouth catches
This chunky yellowfin tuna topped a magical day out on the water for @peak_sportfishing off Exmouth this week. If you plan on taking tuna home make sure you ikejime/brain spike the fish and bleed them thoroughly as soon as they are on the boat before putting it straight into an ice slurry with salt water. Not only does this make the fish easier to fillet, but it also preserves the flesh for a five-star quality feed.

Boats

Tropical cyclone Sean effectively shut down all fishing in the region, with swells up to 6m on the west side and around 4m in Exmouth Gulf. Before the blow kicked in billfishing activity had been good on the west side, with plenty of goldband snapper in the 80m-plus depths and Spanish mackerel closer in were in good numbers. The Gulf had been fairly quiet and now it’s likely to be a few more days before waters clear up there. The Muirons had been fishing steadily for bottom species and Spanish mackerel, while out at Peak Island before the cyclone good numbers of red emperor were caught along with Rankin cod and coral trout. Waters on west side should clear faster than the Gulf and fishing should be fine as soon as the swells ease. An early option could be targeting the lagoons for spangled emperor. Stronger south-westerly winds and a 2m swell will linger until around Monday before it flattens out from Tuesday onwards.

Shore-based

Just hours before the red alert was activated big giant trevally which are known to fire up in stormy conditions were caught on poppers flicked around the Lighthouse, but everything else had pretty much shut down. It’s likely to be several days before water clarity improves but the lagoons on the west side may be an option for spangled emperor and in Exmouth Gulf the marina will at least be sheltered. Before the wild weather the marina had been fishing consistently for squid and mangrove jack.

These great tips were courtesy of the friendly team at Tackle World Exmouth. Swing by their store for the best advice and gear ahead of your next trip!

Kalbarri catches
@nickihuntfishing did well to get this solid trevally into the boat north of town and keep it out of the mouths of the tax man! If a shark is hot on the tail of your fish, try free spooling your reel and let the fish outrun the shark as trying to pull it upwards will decrease your odds. If you're releasing fish and know there are sharks around, try quickly speeding off from the spot for a minute or so before releasing the fish to increase its survival chances. For the best tips on how to avoid shark bite-off, click here.

Boats

There have been some excellent and unusual catches recorded this week. A couple of farmers in town to give the boat a run after harvest did well on Rankin cod at the Three-Mile Reef last weekend, while another crew fishing north of town picked up a 13kg dhufish, then landed three of its northern cousins, pearl perch, in the 6-8kg range. One of the charters found some great pink snapper on just one drift out wide, while the owner’s son picked up a couple of big Spanish mackerel south of Sand Patch. Spanish mackerel and tuna action was also reported out wide north of town. Early on Saturday and Sunday morning could hold better boating weather. Wednesday onwards on the forecast currently looks nicer.

Shore-based

The Kalbarri Offshore & Angling Club held a river competition this week and the Murchison did not disappoint. Some excellent cod around 3kg were landed along with big bream and plenty of chopper tailor. Tailor have also been active in the Murchison River and fish up to 40cm have been landed from the marina jetties and further up, while big mud crabs have been plentiful in the system as well. Yellowfin whiting catches have been good at the Sand Spit and river mouth. Weed and swell have made beach fishing harder, but Wittecarra has produced chopper tailor in the mornings and a few bigger ones have come from Chinamans. School mulloway averaging 75cm have been taken towards Lucky Bay.

Shout out to Dean from Kalbarri Sports and Dive for his tips! Feel free to venture into his store to ask for advice if you're wetting a line around Kalbarri!
Geraldton catches

Boats

Conditions have been challenging but some good dhufish have been landed. Ground north-west of Pensioners Bank has offered dhuies in mixed sizes, along with some very big baldchin groper, while south of Greenough has also fished well for dhufish. Crayfish have been hard work, with many spotted and berried and sizes down. At the back of the Abrolhos Islands blue marlin, black marlin and sailfish have been raised and several landed and released. It's looking very windy and tumultuous again on the forecast. Wednesday morning is looking decent albeit with some extremely hot weather. Hopefully you guys don't top out at 49C again!

Shore-based

Shore fishing has been even more of a challenge with weed a problem. The points at Greenough have offered tailor in mixed sizes and numbers and it’s been a similar story at Tarcoola Beach and Southgates, where fishers have been standing on the weed bank so they can cast into clean water. Squid have been caught on the north side of the Batavia Coast Marina mainly in two’s and three’s and in mixed sizes. In the marina at Port Denison fishers chasing yellowtail scad also caught bream averaging 35cm, while a species of northern trevally was also landed. At Port Gregory last weekend a nice mized bag of school mulloway, tailor and dart was achieved. It will be tough to get a line out easily off the beach over the coming days. Wednesday morning could see some reprieve but be wary of weed.

Thanks to the team at Geraldton Sports Centre for their tips! They will happily provide you with great gear and the solid advice for your next fishing trip.
Lancelin catches
David Bloch and his youngster managed to land this solid guitarfish after a hefty battle, before a quick snap and release of this great fish once the hooks were removed. Brace your biceps, back and forearms when this fish decides to engulf your bait!

Boats

It’s been a case of do the miles and get the smiles, with boats heading out to depths greater than 35m reporting the best catches. A number of fishers reported great numbers of dhufish out wide. It seems nearly all the species have well and truly been on the bite, so after a quick demersal drop fishers have encountered dolphinfish at the FAD’s and schools of yellowfin tuna have been out wide too. Inside the White Bank, the snapper catches have dropped off considerably, possibly because the waters have gone crystal clear, which could be a good opportunity for the divers on the long weekend. Bay fishers have been able to tempt plenty of King George whiting, herring, skippy, flathead and squid. The great conditions that rolled through this week have sadly come to an end and it will be a tough slog for the boats over the coming days, so land-based is likely the way to go. Wednesday morning on the forecast could produce the goods if the swell drops a tad.

Shore-based

The beaches have been running just as well with fish on the bite! We normally see a run of small chopper tailor mid-summer and this year the size has held up well, with plenty of fish in the 40-50cm plus category. The bycatch has also been impressive, with guitarfish, snapper, school-sized mulloway, dart, flathead and sharks all taking baits. Mornings has seen low tides, making it easier to cast to some inshore reefs for snapper and tarwhine, while calm afternoons have made fishing some of the beach gutters profitable for larger tailor and small mulloway.

Big thanks to Peter Fullarton for his tips on what's biting around Lancelin each week! If you want Peter to put you on to the fish directly, make sure you check out his Tailored Treks Tours page. Always a great time and Peter knows the best spots around Lancelin like the back of his hand.

Esperance catches
@lachy_warren enjoyed a great session outside of Esperance sight casting bronzies! For advice on how to best fillet a bronze whaler for a delicious feed, check out this video from @keefish_ on Instagram, he's the filleting master.

Boats

Nannygai have been going ballistic towards Humlaria Reef and behind Mondrain Island with crews getting their boat limits in just a couple of drifts. At Figure of Eight Island, breaksea cod to 3kg and queen snapper to 8kg have been abundant, while big Samsonfish have been landed at Mackenzie Island. Queen snapper, harlequin and breaksea cod have biting at Black Island, while Cook Rocks has fished well for squid and big skippy. In Wylie Bay, thumping sand whiting and good King George whiting have been caught, while Esperance Bay has fished well for snook, herring and squid. The 1.8m swell and moderate westerly winds will linger over this weekend so try and find sheltered spots behind islands or the mainland if ducking out.

Shore-based

Mulloway to 110cm and big gummy sharks have been caught at Israelite Bay, while Poison Creek and Seal Creek have held 15-18kg gummy sharks. Thomas River has produced skippy up to 70cm, while big schools of salmon have been active at Tagon Beach. Alexander Bay has fished well for gummy sharks to 10kg, while small school mulloway and gummy sharks have been at Roses Beach and Warrenup. Near town, big King George whiting have been caught at the port viewing area, while large sand whiting have been abundant at Blue Haven Beach. Salmon Beach and Fourth Beach have yielded salmon, while big herring have been caught from the Taylor Street rock wall.  The Town Jetty has produced squid and garfish at night, while Bandy Creek Boat harbour has fished well for King George whiting and flathead.

Hats off to the very knowledgeable team at Southern Sports & Tackle for their tips! These guys love their fishing as well, so make sure you swing by their store for the best gear and advice before wetting a line around Esperance.

Great Southern catches
@matthewdeboer94 enjoyed a cracker of a day inland from Albany chasing some big black bream on the surface.

Boats

Most boats have been concentrating on King George Sound which has been consistent for squid and also offered reasonably sized King George whiting, a few sand whiting and the odd flathead. At Peaceful Bay a crew managed to get out wide and did well on dhufish, nannygai and harlequin fish. Bream have been firing inland and were taking a mix of soft plastics and surface lures near structure. Early on Saturday is looking very nice on the forecast for the boaties so make the most of it.

Shore-based

Squid have continued to be the main species targeted and although catches have been hit or miss, plenty of nice models have been landed. Fishers can boost their chances by fishing in the early mornings and at night. Good squid catches have come from Whalers Cove, Frenchman Bay, Emu Point and the town marina. Frenchman Bay has also held herring and small King George whiting, the marina has offered small skippy and herring and Emu Point has produced herring, sand whiting and King George whiting. In Princess Royal Harbour some good feeds of blue swimmer crabs have been scooped at times and crabs should also be active in Oyster Harbour. Bream have been plentiful in the King and Kalgan rivers, while the Sand Patch has held herring, resident salmon, tarwhine and flathead. Bremer Bay and Cheynes Beach have also produced a few resident salmon, along with herring and skippy. At Broke Inlet skippy, sand whiting, herring and small salmon have been caught.

Cheers to the Trailblazers Albany crew for their tips this week! Swing by their store if you're after some top gear and advice ahead of your next fishing trip. Remember, you'll also catch just as many fish off the beaches than the rocks and it is always much safer to go with this option on the south coast.

South-West catches
The Busselton Jetty is known for producing some very nice lizards for fishers targeting pinkies or mulloway on the bottom, with youngster @hunter__hebb landing this decent flathead off the iconic landmark.

Boats

Demersal chasers found the fishing slow last weekend with plenty of crews hitting the 40m depths for mostly meagre results. Small bronze whaler sharks were a nuisance and claimed plenty of rigs. Early this week a couple of schools of tuna were found in similar depths but the fish were very skittish. Further south saw members of the Naturaliste Game and Sports Fishing club taking part in the Bluewater Classic last weekend did well on big dhufish, pink snapper, breaksea cod and baldchin groper. A decent mulloway was also landed, along with lots of chunky skippy and some big King George whiting. You can find our recap of this great event by clicking here. In the Leschenault Estuary drop netters have been doing very well on blue swimmer crabs, often getting their bag limits within an hour. The mouth of the estuary and way back towards Australind have been the better spots. Aside from demersal species, Geographe Bay has also fished well for King George whiting, sand whiting and squid. Holidaying kayak fishers targeting beaches south of Bunbury have been dropping nets and finding plenty of blue swimmer crabs and have also picked up decent tailor in the early mornings and evenings. They landed one or two small pink snapper as well. Early on Saturday is looking great but take advantage of that before the strong southerlies return from Sunday onwards.

Shore-based

The warm weather has spiced up the already great yellowfin whiting action in the Leschenault Estuary, with just about any sand bank holding good numbers of 25-30cm tings which have been eagerly snaffling vibes or top-water lures. Plenty of small tailor and big herring have been among the bycatch. Scoopers have had to work a bit harder than their drop-netting counterparts, but many have been getting their limit in a couple of hours. At the Bunbury Cut small tailor, herring and the odd sand whiting have been taken, while Busselton Jetty has produced one or two Samsonfish at the deep end, along with lots of squid and herring. Tailor averaging 40cm have been in good numbers on beaches around Bunbury, anywhere from Dallyellup right up to Preston Beach. Herring and sand whiting have also been in good numbers and at Preston Beach the sandies have been mixed in with yellowfin whiting. The Binningup Beach Fishing Club held its annual competition last weekend in windy and weedy conditions, but competitors found tailor, herring and sand whiting in abundance. South of Busselton Jetty towards Dunsborough saw herring and yellowfin whiting in good numbers on sheltered beaches, while Smiths Beach has produced good tailor around 50cm.

Big cheers to Whitey's Tackle & Camping for their top fishing tips as always! If you're in Australind or Bunbury and are keen to wet a line throughout our South-West make sure you ask their very friendly team who love their fishing for advice and stock up on gear at their store. If you're in Busselton, the 2 Oceans Tackle team are also incredibly helpful.

We were going to throw in a token marron snap, but this half metre brown trout rising from a deep corner and smacking a stationary fly before running 40m upstream for @brod__93 and @leanbackfishing_ changed our minds!
Marron remained the main game this week with major dams such as Wellington and Harvey being heavily targeted. Overall rivers have produced better catches of the freshwater delicacy, with the Collie and Capel rivers holding good numbers. The Blackwood River started off the season poorly, but a few good catches have come from Sue’s Bridge recently. Marron have also been taken around Albany, likely in the upper reaches of the King River. The heat has shut most redfin perch activity, although a few fish have been smashing lures on the surface at sundown in the Collie River, where goldfish have been a nuisance. Smaller 20-25cm redfin were also in great numbers around Harvey Dam at sunset when casting into deeper areas. Small rainbow trout have been taken in skinny water from small tributaries of the Donnelly River.
Mandurah and surrounds
No...we didn't accidentally put a cobia snap from Exmouth in the Mandurah section by mistake, this beauty was landed off Mandurah Rye Bay this week! Even the @tackle_world_miami crew said they don't think they've seen one caught this far south! Most likely from the very hot weather and currents pushing south.

Mandurah

Boats: Demersal chasers have been doing well off Dawesville with no shortage of dhufish in 28-35m and nice breaksea cod and good King George whiting in a bit closer. On the Five-Fathom Bank, pink snapper have been active in the late afternoons and skippy, Samsonfish and yellowtail kingfish have been abundant, while dolphinfish have been caught at the FADs. Inside the Five, King George whiting up to 50cm have been mixed in with sand whiting. The cobia pictured above was taken about 20km straight out from the Mary Street boat ramp this week by an angler using an electric reel and a whole sand whiting as bait. Squid have been caught off Avalon Beach and they are likely to be found off Falcon and Melros as well. In the Peel-Harvey Estuary drop netters haven’t had to work too hard to get their limit of blue swimmer crabs, while plenty of chopper tailor, bull herring and skippy have been smashing lures in the channels and on the drop-offs. Saturday doesn't look too bad on the forecast albeit with a westerly wind expected. At least it will aid your journey home.

Land-based: In the Peel-Harvey Estuary scooping for blue swimmer crabs has improved with good numbers coming from Coodanup and South Yunderup, while yellowfin whiting continued to go gang busters. Most of the tings are in the 25-30cm range along with a few big lone ones. The ground south of Boundary Island seems to be one of the hotspots, but most areas have been producing. At the Dawesville Cut and Mandurah traffic bridges herring and chopper tailor have been the main catches with squid also plentiful at the Cut, especially around the Jolly Frog jetty. Tailor fishing has been going really well for beach anglers with beaches either side of town producing 40-50cm models along with herring and sand whiting. At White Hills soapy mulloway and yellowfin whiting have been in the mix as well.

Thinking of wetting a line around Mandurah? These great tips were courtesy of the super friendly and helpful team at Tackle World Miami so make sure you swing by their store for the best tips and gear before your next fishing trip!

SECRET HARBOUR / PORT KENNEDY / ROCKINGHAM / SAFETY BAY / WARNBRO SOUND

Boats: Demersal action has been going off in a range of depths from 30-70m from behind Garden Island and out towards the Five-Fathom Bank. Plenty of solid dhufish have been about and the bycatch has included lots of harlequin, as well as baldchin groper, breaksea cod and big King George whiting. Surprisingly, pink snapper catches have been light on. The Mangles Bay Fishing Club held a ladies competition last weekend and while dhufish didn’t figure predominantly among the captures, plenty of big baldchin groper, King George whiting and breaksea cod were around, along with skippy and small pink snapper. There has also been heaps of action at the FADs with dolphinfish around the 80cm mark, a couple of species of tuna and big wahoo landed. For those closer in, squid have been plentiful, with the 6m-plus depths fishing best with the warmer weather. Herring, sand whiting and King George whiting have been active inside of Garden Island, behind Penguin Island, off Safety Bay and in Mangles Bay. Chunky skippy have been caught around the Causeway, along with a few solid tailor. In Cockburn Sound divers and drop netters are getting good feeds of blue swimmer crabs. Midday on Saturday and potentially early on Sunday might hold okay windows but Wednesday onwards looks best.

Land-based: Local beaches have been firing for tailor including Kwinana, Port Kennedy, Long Point and Secret Harbour where a very fishy gutter has formed, with good fish averaging 40cm being taken mornings and evenings. Soapy mulloway have been about as well and school mulloway from 70cm up to a metre have started to join the party as well. Herring and sand whiting have been taken during the day, while yellowfin whiting have turned up at Kwinana Beach near the grain terminal and also at the Penguin Island spit. The spit has also fished well for herring, small tailor and sand whiting and it has been worth flicking a vibe or a piece of prawn for flathead and flounder on the flats and drop-offs. Land-based squid fishing has improved a lot this week with good catches coning from the Rockingham, Palm Beach and Ammo jetties as well as Woodman Point. These locations have also offered herring, sand whiting and chopper tailor. Point Peron has fished well for squid as well along with herring and sand whiting. Those scooping for blue swimmer crabs have had to work hard for a feed as have those who have swum out from the shore at Rockingham.

These great fishing tips were provided by the friendly team at Compleat Angler & Camping World in Rockingham, so make sure you chat to their experienced crew in store and stock up before heading out!
Perth catches
@lewy_tutt did very well to keep this healthy yellowtail kingfish from pinging his line on a shallow metro reef in 2m of water this week, that'll kick start your heart! These brilliant fish are in great numbers around Mewstones, Stragglers and around Rottnest at the moment. If you catch one, make sure you donate the frame to DPIRD so we can see if these kingies are fish we've stocked over the years!

Boats

Dhufish seem to be following the crayfish out to the deeper water and plenty of good ones have been found near Rottnest and Carnac islands and also off Two Rocks. Breaksea cod have been the prominent bycatch along with big King George whiting. The FADs and fish towers have been hit or miss, but they have really fired on some days for small dolphinfish but at times thumping wahoo have turned up, with a couple of fish over 20kg landed or speared. At Rottnest’s West End, yellowtail kingfish have been thick, while the island’s bays have offered King George and sand whiting, herring, skippy, squid and tailor. Squid catches have been good inshore from South Fremantle and Coogee, but they have been holding deeper than usual with 6m a good starting point. At these locations kayak fishers dropping nets have been doing well on blue swimmer crabs. Off Ocean Reef and at the Three-Mile Reef pink snapper have been in reasonable numbers along with Samsonfish, while Three-Mile has held small breaksea cod, skippy and King George whiting as well. The Windmills has produced sand whiting, squid and a few smaller King George whiting, while the 10m depths off City Beach and Cottesloe have yielded lots of sand whiting and a few KG’s out a bit wider. Tailor fishing in the Swan River has slowed a little, but there is plenty of bait around so looking out for birds or watching the sounder has got a lot of crews on to a school of choppers anywhere downstream from the Narrows. Blue swimmer crabs have pushed way up the Swan River with pot floats seen at Maylands, but most crews have been concentrating on the middle to lower reaches with Applecross, Como, the old brewery, Blackwall Reach, Claremont and Mosman Bay among the locations producing. There have been whispers of big mulloway being extracted from the sunken barges in Mosman Bay by anglers using live baits at night. While the conditions have been lovely this week, it will start to go haywire with the southerly winds from Sunday onwards. Midday on Saturday might be accomodating for the boats but Wednesday onwards next week should see the hot, flat conditions return.

Shore-based

Hats off to this little legend for her PB 51cm metro flathead right in front of the city skyline in South Perth. A great snap from @tonys.fishing.adventures.

Tailor catches have been good around Leighton, Cottesloe and Port beaches in the afternoons with good fish around the 50cm mark landed on mulies. Floreat has fished best in the mornings, but only the odd tailor has been caught with herring making up the bulk of the catches.  The Fremantle Moles have been very quiet, offering a few chopper tailor, snook and herring. The northern beaches have offered tailor and sand whiting, with Trigg, Quinns Beach and Pinnaroo Point fishing well, while at the far-north metro beaches both drone fishers and casters have caught pink snapper. Fremantle Harbour has fished quite well for herring, garfish, skippy and tarwhine. Scaly mackerel have been plentiful there too, but nothing seems to be chasing them. The rock walls around South Fremantle have offered herring, tailor and skippy but only a few squid were caught this week. Catherine Point at South Beach has fished very well for tailor to 50cm in the evenings. Good blue swimmer crabs have been picked by those swimming out from the South Beach or the nearby dog beach. In the Swan River those scooping blue swimmer crabs have fared best at Alfred Cove, Applecross, Point Walter and Claremont. Tailor have been taken mainly downstream from the Narrows, where they have often been active under the lights, and at most jetties and drop-offs around Applecross, Canning Bridge, Claremont, Mosman and East and North Fremantle. Up past the Causeway an angler chasing giant herring hooked and lost at tailor estimated at 70cm early this week. The Redcliffe to Guildford stretch has been the main area targeted by giant herring chasers and several good ones have been landed. Be sure to keep an eye out for bull sharks which have been active in this part of the river, so avoid wading out too deep. Bream chasers in the Swan have been doing best fishing around structure, although the hot weather may tempt a couple on to the flats. Structure anywhere from the Narrows up to Guildford has produced good bream, along with a few soapy mulloway and the odd big flathead, but don’t ignore the lower reaches such as the pens and yacht clubs at Nedlands, Claremont, Mosman Bay and East Fremantle which hold resident fish. The East Fremantle area has continued to fish well for yellowfin whiting late at night, but with the warmer weather a few good sessions have been enjoyed on the flats in the daytime by fishers using vibes. Unfortunately, the warmer weather has does little to fire up flathead and flounder activity in the lower reaches with both numbers and sizes well down. Around Saturday on midday looks to be the easiest land-based fishing window over the coming days although you may have the breeze in your face if casting off the beach.

A big thanks to Anglers Fishing World in Fremantle for their great tips! These guys love their fishing just as much as we all do, so make sure you ask their super friendly team for advice and stock up before wetting a line off the land or boat!
