During the hotter months you'll often see sailfish breaching the surface and moving at lightning speed to smash a lure or bait on the surface in our northern regions. Exmouth right through to Broome is one of the best stretches in the world where you'll see this happening.

Broome catches
If you're wanting to see the epic scenery and barra fishing on offer at Lake Kununurra in the East Kimberley, watch the stunning video from Curt McCartney above. It will make you want to pack your rods immediately.

Boats

There has been lots of storm activity, some of it quite violent, which has limited fishing opportunities mostly to Roebuck Bay. Fingermark perch and northern mulloway have been picked up from the ledges there and, while no reports have come in, the floating debris in the bay should be holding tripletail. Barramundi have been caught in Dampier Creek and in Crab Creek on the high tide, with both systems holding decent numbers of mud crabs. With the bigger tides over the next few days the Fingers could be a good option for threadfin salmon. The wind and swell don’t look too bad over this weekend but both will gradually start to increase into next week with a 2m swell expected, so it would be best to take advantage of the nice conditions early on Saturday and Sunday.

Shore-based

Big sections of the Fitzroy River have been flowing strongly and getting to locations has been quite a mission with many of the access roads cut off, so be sure to check the conditions before you leave. The Fitzroy has held a few fish though, with barramundi being taken at the Cuttings. Around town, Willie Creek has been holding a few barramundi and good numbers of mangrove jack but check that it is accessible before giving that spot a crack. The Town Beach Jetty has held bream and small queenfish and trevally. Bigger queenfish and trevally have been caught at Entrance Point but it has been hit or miss there.

Big thanks to the crew from Tackle World Broome for their tips! Make sure you pay them a visit for the best gear and advice for your next fishing trip.
Exmouth catches
Kudos to Ashling Charles landing her first Spanish mackerel off Karratha recently in our productive Pilbara waters! The smile tells the story!

Boats

Crews heading out wide on the west side of Exmouth to find clear water have raised and hooked a few blue marlin, which have been kept company by some big yellowfin tuna pushing 60kg, while billfishers have had the skirts of their lures snipped by big wahoo out wide also. Bottom fishing has been much harder offshore than usual, with just the odd report of goldband snapper catches coming in. On the edge of the lagoons good hauls of spangled emperor have been taken and the odd Spanish mackerel has been cruising not too far offshore. Only a few boats have ventured to the islands and the hauls there have been meagre, with a handful of spangled emperor, small Rankin cod and the odd Spanish mackerel caught. In Exmouth Gulf the churned-up water has been a challenge. A few queenfish have been taken on the edges of the dirty water and the odd blue-lined and spangled emperor have been caught on the bottom, but other than that it’s been slim pickings this week. One or two squid have been caught on the weed beds when clearer water has been found. Saturday morning should see nice flat conditions on the water all around Exmouth but the westerly wind and 2m swell will hang around over the next five days after that. The Gulf would be more sheltered if you have a smaller boat.

@maccydave produced the goods for Sophie and Max this week, with this beauty of a cobia landed via the trusty kayak.

Shore-based

The best shore-based action this week in Exmouth has come from the tip of the Cape where good numbers of spangled emperor and bluebone have rewarded anglers. Down at Learmonth a few whiting and mangrove jack have been caught, and even the Bundegi boat ramp has struggled to produce its regular quota of queenfish and trevally. Whiting will likely fire up all over the Gulf when the water clears properly, and they should be hungry. It hasn’t quite been business as usual at the town marina, but it has been reliable for a few bream, cod and trevally. Tantabiddi and Winderabandi have produced a few spangled emperor.

These great tips were courtesy of the friendly team at Tackle World Exmouth. Swing by their store for the best advice and gear ahead of your next trip!

Kalbarri catches
@nickihuntfishing and Leigh managed to bring this stunner of a coronation trout aboard this week, one of the best tasting fish in the sea!

Boats

With the water temperature hovering around 25C it’s been all about the pelagics this week, with heaps of Spanish mackerel action offshore including bag-outs and double hook-ups on the troll. Some of the Spaniards have been over 15kg and lots of bonito and tuna have been smashing small metal slices as well. There was also a report of a small marlin hooked and lost. Demersal chasers did well before the season closed with pink snapper taken in big sizes straight out from town, along with quite a few baldchin groper, while out wider spangled emperor and dhufish were landed on the lumps. Out wider still on the coral ground a few red emperor and some big cod were caught. The swell is hovering around 2m this week but early in the mornings this weekend might hold weather windows.

Shore-based

Action at the cliffs has been quieter than usual, with sizeable tailor the main species caught, although a drone fisher landed a 20kg cobia late last week. Tailor fishing has been good at the river mouth and Back Beach with fish to 65cm taken on CID GT Ice Cream lures. Smaller tailor and a few dart have been caught by early-morning fishers at Wittecarra and Red Bluff. Despite the calm conditions, weed has been a problem at Wagoe and Jakes Bay. Lucky Bay seems to be the better choice for those planning to head out of town. North of Frustrations and Oysters saw good tailor, school mulloway and small pink snapper landed, while the reef holes there have been holding lots of crayfish. In the Murchison River the warmer current has brought down a few northern visitors including javelinfish and fingermark. Elsewhere in the river, bream fishing has been good around the marina and whiting have been in good numbers at the Sand Spit. Mud crab catches have been consistent.

Shout out to Dean from Kalbarri Sports and Dive for his tips! Feel free to venture into his store to ask for advice if you're wetting a line around Kalbarri!
Geraldton catches

Boats

Extremely strong currents made fishing hard in the last days of the demersal season but some good catches of dhufish, baldchin groper, small pink snapper and coral trout came from the shallower water, with bigger pink snapper out wider. Some of the best dhufish catches were at African Reef. There is good news on the pelagic front though with a few striped tuna off Coronation Beach and good numbers of Spanish mackerel sighted a bit closer to town. There have been no sightings of Spanish mackerel of Pensioners Bank. Out wide, the FADs have held good numbers of dolphinfish and Abrolhos Islands crayfishers have reported seeing lots of them around their floats.  Free-swimming blue and black marlin have been seen at the Abrolhos as well, along with the odd sailfish. Conditions are looking treacherous this week unfortunately but larger boats may be able to handle it.

Shore-based

Weed has been a major issue this week but Greenough’s first and second points have offered some respite, with tailor and pike being caught in the mornings at first point and the second point fishing better in the afternoons for tailor and dart. Most of the tailor have been skinny fish just over 30cm. Southgates has held good numbers of tailor in the mornings along with herring and dart. There was good tailor fishing at Tarcoola Beach too before the weed came in. The town breakwater has held small tailor and school whiting, while the stretch from the eastern breakwater to Dome Cafe has fished well for herring, dart, small flathead and the odd flounder. At night when the water has been clean, squid have been caught at the Batavia Coast Marina, while fishers using burley near Medallions have done well on herring. The Chapman Road rock groynes have offered herring, pike and tailor, while good tailor have been taken at Sunset Beach. Early-morning lure casters have landed a few tailor at Drummond Cove.

Thanks to the team at Geraldton Sports Centre for their tips! They will happily provide you with great gear and the solid advice for your next fishing trip.
Lancelin catches
Young Michael spent a morning with Peter Fullarton this week and had a blast reeling in some tailor and sand whiting!

Boats

Boats fishing offshore are reported plagues of pink snapper, while the 45m depths were particularly good for dhufish. Inside the White Bank in depths lower than 15m also held good numbers of snapper and dhufish. Now that the demersal season is ending it’s certainly time to break out the trolling gear with very warm water offshore. Random schools of tuna have been found throughout a range of depths with some big yellowfin among them. Spanish mackerel have been mostly around 8-10kg with some boats landing several in a dawn trolling session and the FAD’s have been loaded with dolphinfish. Inside the bay there have been some good catches of King George whiting and well sized herring. The sand patches in 5-6m depths both north and south of town have held some decent sand whiting. The weather isn't looking great this week unfortunately but land-based could be a better option.

Shore-based

The bays beaches and around the jetty have had a poor water quality due to still hot days and seaweed decay. Thankfully beaches north and south of town have been firing well, with plenty of tailor and the sizes have been very good for this time of year. The warm waters have brought a change in species, with a flush of very large guitar sharks and even a few tropical snappers appearing in the catches! Pink snapper have been holding a little further offshore from casting range with longer drone drops finding 3-4kg fish. Most sessions have also seen a flathead or two snaffling a bait. The staple bread and butter species have been improving in numbers with better catches of herring and an increase in the size of whiting.

Big thanks to Peter Fullarton for his tips on what's biting around Lancelin each week! If you want Peter to put you on to the fish directly, make sure you check out his Tailored Treks Tours page. Always a great time and Peter knows the best spots around Lancelin like the back of his hand.

Esperance catches
A big congrats to Taylor Grosse for entering the salmon club this week off Esperance where plenty of healthy fish were hunting through the surf!

Boats

The ripper run on nannygai has continued with crews often bagging out in 30 minutes on fish averaging 50cm around Figure of Eight Island, where a thumping 69cm nanny was landed. Good dhufish and pink snapper have been caught towards Red Island, while Observatory Island has held big queen snapper. At Sweep Rock and Lion Island breaksea cod, harlequin and small queen snapper have been caught, while schools of tuna have been active at Davey Island. Wylie Bay has yielded big sand whiting, while big King George whiting have come from Lovers Cove. Squid, herring and snook have been in Esperance Bay between the port rocks and the Town Jetty. Forecast doesn't look too great but Monday morning should hold a better window.

Shore-based

Mulloway to 110cm have been caught at Israelite Bay, while Seal Creek and Cape Arid have yielded big flathead. Thomas River has been a hotspot for gummy sharks and big skippy, while Dunns Beach has held good numbers of mulloway to 80cm. Salmon, big skippy and gummy sharks have been abundant at Warrenup and Roses Beach, while the first stretch of Wylie Bay has produced big sand whiting in the mornings. Decent King George whiting have been taken from the town foreshore, while Bandy Creek Boat Harbour has offered King George whiting and smallish skippy. The Taylor Street and Town jetties have fished well for squid and big herring in the afternoons, while Salmon Beach has held big herring and salmon.

Hats off to the very knowledgeable team at Southern Sports & Tackle for their tips! These guys love their fishing as well, so make sure you swing by their store for the best gear and advice before wetting a line around Esperance.

Great Southern catches
A healthy and delicious squid plucked from Albany's sheltered waters by @daniel.dimech.9!

Boats

Despite a couple of half-decent days the coral ground has not been fishing as well as usual. A few demersal species have been picked up, but leatherjackets have been a big nuisance out there. It’s been better in King George Sound, especially for squid chasers who have had little trouble getting a feed. King George whiting however have been harder to find, but usually persistence has paid off, although the sizes have been modest. Plenty of snook have been about. Both Saturday and Sunday look manageable on the forecast if you wish to duck out.

Shore-based

Squid have been the best bet for shore fishers this week with catches consistent at the town marina, Emu Point, at Middleton at night, Frenchman Bay and Whalers Cove. Small King George whiting and big herring have shown up at Emu Point and Frenchman Bay, while the marina has held lots of herring as well. Scoop netters chasing blue swimmer crabs in Oyster and Princess Royal harbours have not exactly been cleaning up, but have managed to get a few across most days in the early mornings and evenings. Most of the local beaches have been holding herring, skippy and some big tarwhine. A few salmon have been taken at Bremer Bay. Bream fishing has been quiet in the King and Kalgan rivers, but a nice mulloway around a metre was taken on a whole trumpeter bait at the Lower King Bridge late last week.

Cheers to the Trailblazers Albany crew for their tips this week! Swing by their store if you're after some top gear and advice ahead of your next fishing trip. Remember, you'll also catch just as many fish off the beaches than the rocks and it is always much safer to go with this option on the south coast.

South-West catches

Boats

The demersal season ended well for most fishers with many of their captures also including big King George whiting. Demersal fishers who fished shallow waters south of Bunbury and sent out a burley trail picked up some sold tailor. Tuna schools have been spotted in 20m and 40m depths and the warmer current has produced a few surprises recently, with a regular at Whitiey’s Tackle and Camping counting among his recent catches two shark mackerel, a small Spanish mackerel and a Rankin cod, while at the Naturaliste FADs dolphinfish have been active. Geographe Bay has held plenty of good squid, reasonable King George whiting and, in the 10m depths, big sand whiting. Drop netters have been picking up blue swimmer crabs at the Dunsborough end of the bay. Blue swimmer crabs have been main target in the Leschenault Estuary and they have been really firing for drop netters, while good numbers of chopper tailor, juvenile salmon and skippy have been in the system also. Sunday morning looks like the best window on the forecast this weekend.

Love your crabbing? To understand the impact of management changes and ensure crabbing experiences can continue to be improved, we want to hear from you! So help us and the crab fishery out by sharing your views in our survey!

Shore-based

Yellowfin whiting continue to be widespread in the Leschenault Estuary but sizes have been down, with tings over 30cm scarce. Nevertheless, there’s been no complaints about the numbers and lately a few flounder have turned up as bycatch. Another hotspot in the middle of the estuary has been the long jetty halfway between Australind and the Collie River which has fired for skippy, juvenile salmon and chopper tailor. Similar species have come from Bunbury’s Back Beach and the Bunbury Cut. In the Collie River mulloway to 80cm have shown a liking for soft plastics and mullet baits. Tailor catches have been consistent on beaches either side of Bunbury and beaches north of town, including Preston, which have held yellowfin whiting and the odd small mulloway. With the moon waxing it could be worth fishing into the night with a fresh tailor fillet or a live bait in the hope of landing a big silver ghost. Herring have been in good numbers on most beaches as well. At Dalyellup, good numbers of garfish have turned up on hot days when conditions have been calm. Scoopers in the middle of the estuary have been working hard for a feed of blue swimmer crabs, while divers at the Bunbury Cut have picked them up in better numbers. The Busselton Jetty has held lots of squid, along with herring and sand whiting. At White Point, drone fishers have been landing pink snapper, while the rocks around Dunsborough have yielded small Samsonfish, flathead, King George whiting and tarwhine. At Augusta, McGreary Rock has produced skippy, herring and tarwhine.

Big cheers to Whitey's Tackle & Camping for their top fishing tips as always! If you're in Australind or Bunbury and are keen to wet a line throughout our South-West make sure you ask their very friendly team who love their fishing for advice and stock up on gear at their store. If you're in Busselton, the 2 Oceans Tackle team are also incredibly helpful.

There's been plenty of these delicious critters doing the rounds in our South-West and @jesse_mouritz was plucking them by hand.
Waroona and Wellington dams have been busy with marron chasers finding them in improved sizes this week, while in the rivers marron sizes have been even better with the Pemberton region, Collie, Harvey, Capel and Blackwood fishing consistently. Many marron chasers around Albany however have had little success this year. At Honeymoon Pool on the Collie River small rainbow trout have been sighted in big numbers but they have been very hard to tempt. Most of the redfin perch caught in Harvey and Wellington dams have taken by kayak fishers targeting the deepwater snags, mainly with soft plastics. In the Collie River townsite area people have been having a lot of fun trying to reduce the population of invasive goldfish, with some quite big models caught on bread baits. Whatever you do don’t release them!
Mandurah and surrounds
Great to see Tackle World Miami's Ash Ramm letting his curly hair down to land this cracker of a dhuie right before the season closes!

Mandurah

Boats: Demersal fishers making the most of the last days of the season out at the Five-Fathom Bank and off Dawesville added some big King George whiting to their bags this week, while inside the Five sand whiting were abundant. After the confirmed cobia catch last week, an angler fishing at the artificial reef found a school of them in his burley trail. At the Mandurah FADs a blue marlin was sighted, while yellowtail kingfish and Samsonfish have been thick, right out to 60-80m, and a few tuna have been around too. All the naysayers who thought the good start to the crabbing season was just a flash in the pan and that things would slow a few weeks after the December 1 opening have been proven wrong in spades, with many crews in the Peel-Harvey Estuary picking up their bag limits of blue swimmers in only two or three runs. Some locals are saying it’s been the best season in at least a decade with the crabs very meaty and the sizes good. The blue swimmers have been widespread throughout the system and finding them should be fairly easy, but Point Grey, Boggy Bay, South Yunderup and up the Harvey Estuary around the science platform are good starting points. Tailor have gone a bit quiet this week, but bull herring and skippy have filled the void, while kayaker fishers have been paddling out to flats in the middle of the estuary and were picking up yellowfin whiting on surface lures. Sunday morning looks best for the boaties.

Love your crabbing? To understand the impact of management changes and ensure crabbing experiences can continue to be improved, we want to hear from you! So help us and the crab fishery out by sharing your views in our survey!

Land-based: A surprise catch this week was a Samsonfish landed by a young lad at Falcon, but other than that beach fishing has been quiet. Some good tailor have turned up at White Hills, but not every day, and they have been hard to find at most of the other beaches on both sides of town. Thankfully herring, sand whiting and garfish have been in reasonable numbers on warmer days when the swells have been low. Herring and juvenile salmon have been at the Mandurah bridges, while the Dawesville Cut has held these species along with good numbers of squid and a few skippy. For yellowfin whiting chasers, Boundary Island, Island Point at high tide and the flats behind Navarro General Store have been very consistent, but the tings are widespread and most fishers have found a few. Like their boating counterparts, scoopers have been enjoying a cracking run on blue swimmer crabs, with Coodanup, South Yunderup and near the boat ramp at the Leprechaun Café some of the better locations.

Thinking of wetting a line around Mandurah? These great tips were courtesy of the super friendly and helpful team at Tackle World Miami so make sure you swing by their store for the best tips and gear before your next fishing trip!

SECRET HARBOUR / PORT KENNEDY / ROCKINGHAM / SAFETY BAY / WARNBRO SOUND

Boats: Crabbing in Cockburn Sound has been firing with crews dropping nets around the moorings finding plenty. Squid have also been fishing well and have been active in quite shallow depths despite the warm water temperatures. With the demersal ban kicking in, squid and King George whiting are likely to be heavily targeted and decent KGs and squid have been taken inside and outside of Garden Island, in Mangles Bay, off Woodman Point and behind Penguin Island. Woodies and the back of Penguin Island have also offered lots of sand whiting too, while the Garden Island causeway and other lumps have held some good skippy. Pelagic species are well worth targeting with dolphinfish and wahoo active at the FADs, along with yellowtail kingfish and tuna. Offshore reefs such as Mewstones and Coventry Reef should be worth a crack for tailor. Both mornings this weekend on the forecast look decent.

Love your crabbing? To understand the impact of management changes and ensure crabbing experiences can continue to be improved, we want to hear from you! So help us and the crab fishery out by sharing your views in our survey!

Land-based: Divers swimming out from shore have found plenty of blue swimmer crabs in Mangles Bay, but scoop netters have had to work much harder. Blue swimmers have been picked up in drop nets at the Ammo Jetty and Woodman Point as well. Squid fishing has been hard work with Point Peron probably the best choice. It has also offered herring and sand whiting. Tailor fishing has remained consistent along the Secret Harbour to Kwinana stretch and a few soapy and school mulloway have been in the mix. On these hot days yellowfin whiting could be worth targeting around the grain terminal, while some decent flathead have been taken on lures at the Port Kennedy boat ramp. Nice flathead and sand whiting have been taken at the Penguin Island sand spit as well. Rockingham, Palm Beach and the Ammo jetties, along with Woodman Point have mainly offered herring and chopper tailor. All these spots have held lots of scaly mackerel also, but the only predators that seem to harassing them have been small sharks, which has led to plenty of bite-offs.

These great fishing tips were provided by the friendly team at Compleat Angler & Camping World in Rockingham, so make sure you chat to their experienced crew in store and stock up before heading out!
Perth catches
Plenty of healthy pinkies have been landed off the metro region over the past couple of months including this lovely specimen by @dan.coughlan this week. Time to give demersals a well-earned break until the season opens back up on April 1st.

Boats

At Rottnest Island, yellowtail kingfish have been thick at the West End and Spanish mackerel have been sighted too, with several hooked but not landed. Samsonfish have been in the deeper water behind Rottnest, while the island’s small bays have held good numbers off squid, herring and King George whiting. The FADs have been firing, producing dolphinfish, with wahoo, yellowtail kingfish and tuna also showing up. At the Windmills, King George whiting have been mixed in with sand whiting, while sand whiting have been inshore off South Fremantle along with herring, squid and tailor. Good squid and skippy have been taken off Hillarys, while some nice King George whiting have been caught off Mindarie. As usual, City Beach has been a stronghold for sand whiting in 10-15m. Crews trolling mulies and Halco Twistys have been doing well on tailor just behind the reef from Ocean Reef to Quinns Rocks, while further south Stragglers should be worth a crack for tailor. Off Coogee, drop netters have been doing well on blue swimmer crabs and squid have been about too. Crabbing continues to be very good in the lower and middle reaches of the Swan River with the 10m-plus depths at Claremont, Applecross, Mosman Bay and Blackwall Reach holding plenty of blue swimmer crabs. Tailor action has slowed a little, but good fish have been taken from Claremont right down to Fremantle Harbour. Sunday morning looks best on the forecast and make sure you troll everywhere you go because the pelagics are on fire.

Love your crabbing? To understand the impact of management changes and ensure crabbing experiences can continue to be improved, we want to hear from you! So help us and the crab fishery out by sharing your views in our survey!

Shore-based

Plenty of scaly mackerel have taken up residence in Fremantle Harbour, so a big mulloway could be on the cards for those prepared to put in the hours. It’s been very quiet at the Fremantle Moles with just a few herring and the odd tailor in the evening. Better tailor have been taken from the rock walls at South Fremantle and at Catherine Point. The marinas along Mews Road have held herring, skippy, sand whiting and also small Samsonfish, which have been caught on micro jigs, while divers have been swimming out and getting blue swimmer crabs at South Beach and the dog beach. Tailor action has been quieter around Port and Cottesloe beaches, while City Beach and Floreat have offered mainly herring, with just the odd tailor and a few skippy. Trigg has produced good tailor and some even bigger specimens have been taken on lures at beaches around Quinns and Two Rocks, with Halco C-Gars, Dr Hook Long Toms and CID GT Ice Creams all being smashed in hot sessions. Mulies have produced plenty of tailor north of the river as well, while the far northern beaches have held a few small pink snapper. Land-based fishers found the going slow in the Swan River this week. Blue swimmer crabs seem to be holding in deeper water, making it tough for scoopers, although divers have been getting a few. Tailor fishing has been best at Point Resolution, the Narrows under the lights at night, Claremont, Blackwall Reach, Mosman Bay and Canning Bridge. Flathead have been around Claremont, East Fremantle, Point Walter and Bicton but most have been small, while flounder have been very quiet. Bigger flathead have been caught in the upper reaches. Bream and soapy mulloway action has tapered off, but fishing structure up river from the Causeway to Guildford should produce results. Night-time yellowfin whiting catches have eased and the tings have shown little interest in lures during the day. A couple of giant herring have been caught at night in the middle reaches, but most people have been targeting the speedsters around Maylands.

A big thanks to Anglers Fishing World in Fremantle for their great tips! These guys love their fishing just as much as we all do, so make sure you ask their super friendly team for advice and stock up before wetting a line off the land or boat!
