IMPROVED MOBILE COVERAGE ON THE WAY FOR WEST AUSSIE FISHERS
Recfishwest welcomes the State Government's announcement to boost mobile coverage at dozens of coastal locations around WA, with popular fishing spots that have seen incidents before such as Lowlands, Sugarloaf Rock and Moses Rock on our Southern and South-West coast and the Quobba coast in the Gascoyne all set for upgrades.

While this is good news, Recfishwest will continue to push for spots like Salmon Holes near Albany – an infamous spot that has sadly claimed many lives – to be included on this list to ensure the safety of everyone who visits the area.

Read more on this announcement here.
Broome catches
Lake Kununurra was on fire once again this week with Ash joining @good_dhu_dhu on the cracker barra wagon after landing this 70cm+ specimen.

Boats

Cyclonic activity has slammed the brakes on most fishing in the area. A couple of crews have targeted Crab and Dampier Creeks and found a few threadfin salmon and small barramundi, but it has been hit or miss. Chasing mud crabs in the creeks could also be an option if the fishing is slow. Before the weather turned, good northern mulloway were picked up around Black Ledge in Roebuck Bay. Given the wild weather hanging around it doesn’t look comfortable (or safe) out on the water until at least Monday.

Shore-based

Even Town Beach Jetty has been difficult to fish with strong winds and choppy conditions shutting down most activity. Not even the resident bream on the pylons were showing any interest this week. If accessible, a sheltered corner of Willie Creek could produce a few mangrove jack or maybe a small barramundi. Accessing the Fitzroy River has not been easy and it is flowing very strongly with fresh water, so much so that the influx of fresh water has been killing the live baits being used to tempt barramundi. The Cuttings seems to have been the best location to target barramundi in the Fitzroy this week.

Big thanks to the crew from Tackle World Broome for their tips! Make sure you pay them a visit for the best gear and advice for your next fishing trip.
Exmouth catches
There have been good numbers of queenfish doing the rounds all throughout our northern regions and @katsbigadventure had plenty of fun rustling in this rather golden beauty.

Boats

With unsettled conditions and still plenty of dirty water around from the last rain front along with some swell, it hasn’t been easy for crews this week. Because of the dirty water bait fishing has been the go at most locations, but for those persevering with lures big noisy vibes or Vexed Bottom Meats adorned with some fresh squid are recommended. Some clearer patches have been found on the west side of the Cape and they have yielded mainly goldband snapper in 80m or so, while around the Five-Mile big giant trevally were in close before the weather turned, while queenfish were fishing well in the creek systems and near the mouths. The lagoons on the west side have turned green and silty, but a few spangled emperor and Chinaman cod have been caught. It has been a bit clearer at the Muirons and the odd Spanish mackerel has been found there by crews trolling, while on the bottom red-throat emperor, spangled emperor and Rankin cod have been active. In Exmouth Gulf it has been hard going with blue-lined emperor and spangled emperor the main species taken. The wild weather is expected to calm down from about Sunday morning onwards.

Shore-based

Whiting have been harder to find in Exmouth Gulf and have shown a preference for small squid or prawn baits. Town Beach has been one of the better spots for them. At Bundegi, the dirty water has attracted queenfish and giant trevally, with mangrove jack caught there as well. Mangrove jack have also been taken at Learmonth where a live bait fished off the jetty has accounted for decent queenfish and trevally at times. Mangrove jack were also active in the marina, along with bream, cod, trevally and some medium-sized spangled emperor. From VLF Bay up around the Cape, spangled emperor, giant trevally and queenfish have been caught with burley proving helpful and squid baits or strips of mulie getting good results. Tantabiddi has thrown up a few whiting.

These great tips were courtesy of the friendly team at Tackle World Exmouth. Swing by their store for the best advice and gear ahead of your next trip!

Kalbarri catches
@nickihuntfishing with one of the tastiest fish in the sea - a blue lined emperor (also known as black snapper) landed north of Kalbarri. These can be confused with spangled emperor but a good way to tell it's a blue lined emperor is they are generally darker and only have the distinctive blue spots or lines around their eyes.

Boats

Spanish mackerel in a range of sizes have been taken, mainly south of town, so it pays to troll lures or garfish baits no matter where you move. Decent tuna have been about as well, and a couple of cobia have been caught by crews trolling for mackerel. One crew picked up six Spaniards trolling between Red Bluff and Pot Alley, while the Sand Patch and straight out from the river mouth have also yielded good fish. Saturday and Sunday morning may hold inviting windows, but Sunday morning looks best currently on the forecast.

Shore-based

Tailor action has been very good at Siphons on the south side of the Blue Holes, and at the river mouth and Chinamans. Quad bikers have also picked up good tailor and a few mulloway on the other side of the river, while smaller tailor and a few dart have been caught at Wittecarra and Red Bluff. Drone fishers and those sending out balloons have picked up small Spanish mackerel at Red Bluff, while tailor and a few small pink snapper have been caught from the cliffs. In the Murchison River big tailor up to 60cm have pushed far upstream past the marina. Yellowfin whiting have headed 3-4km up river as well, but they should still be about the Sand Spit. Bream around 30cm and big cod have also been active in the system.

Shout out to Dean from Kalbarri Sports and Dive for his tips! Feel free to venture into his store to ask for advice if you're wetting a line around Kalbarri!
Geraldton catches

Boats

A few Spanish mackerel have started to show up, ranging from just-size to 15kg. They have been in better numbers on the north side of town. Big schools of little bonito have also been active in close and they have turned up almost within casting distance of the Batavia Coast Marina rock wall at times. Kayak fishers have had a ball targeting them on lures. Sunday morning looks the better of the two days this weekend, with the swell dropping below 2m and lower winds expected.

Shore-based

The beaches have been very stirred up with strong surges but when clear spots can be found near reefs a few tailor have been landed. The beaches around Dongara have been much more consistent for tailor around the 40cm mark and they also have held plenty of small tarwhine, which have annoyed whiting fishers. On the right day Point Moore and Separation Point have been fishable and have yielded whiting for anglers using Eco Gear ZX vibes. A big dart was also hooked on a vibe and lost at the shore and the odd herring has shown up there. In calmer weather the rocks behind the Dome café have offered whiting around 30cm and the odd bull herring. In the Greenough River just up from the mouth, a big-eye trevally was landed by an angler slowly working surface lures on the flats. He also landed small giant herring and a few small bream, often in just 30cm of water.

Thanks to the team at Geraldton Sports Centre for their tips! They will happily provide you with great gear and the solid advice for your next fishing trip.
Lancelin catches
Jon and his son Jacko enjoyed wetting a line on one of Peter Fullarton's Tailored treks and managed to land this healthy white spotted guitar fish before a quick snap and release.

Boats

Fishers putting in time trolling lures along the western edge of reefs have managed to find a few Spanish mackerel, while a little further offshore schools of striped tuna have been providing entertainment. Depths around the 20m line have been consistent, with some plump sand whiting also turning up. In the bay there has also been schools of very sizeable herring and some decent catches of squid have been providing quality feeds. Sunday morning should hold a nice window for ducking out.

Shore-based

The evening high tides have produced the most fish this week with a number of mulloway in the 65-90cm range and plenty of tailor. While mornings haven’t been producing quantity, some very good fish have been landed with whaler sharks, guitar fish, snapper and even a dhufish coming from a bait cast from the beach. Calmer conditions usually around mid-morning saw some great sessions when casting small lures with flick rods catching herring and dart. The beaches have some yellowfin whiting in the shallows up to 40cm. Both mornings this weekend look decent for land-based sessions with an easterly wind aiding your casting.

Big thanks to Peter Fullarton for his tips on what's biting around Lancelin each week! If you want Peter to put you on to the fish directly, make sure you check out his Tailored Treks Tours page. Always a great time and Peter knows the best spots around Lancelin like the back of his hand.

Esperance catches

Boats

Herring, skippy snook and squid have been in Esperance Bay, while around the islands breaksea cod, queen snapper and sweep have been plentiful. Out a bit wider nannygai to 55cm have been caught, while tuna schools have been sighted around McKenzie Island. The deeper water has also held some big Samsonfish, while Baynes Reef has produced good numbers of breaksea cod to 3kg. Friday and early on Saturday should be manageable for ducking out before the strong easterlies return.

Shore-based

Town Jetty has held plenty of herring, small skippy and some good-sized squid, while Bandy Creek Boat Harbour has offered bream to 35cm, small skippy, a few flounder and lots of herring. The Bream Lakes have been firing as well despite the nearby fires. Fourth and Salmon beaches have held a few salmon, lots of big herring and few skippy, while Dunns Beach has produced skippy to 3kg, herring and salmon. Thomas River has yielded skippy around the kilo mark, small mulloway and gummy sharks, while Israelite Bay has offered flathead, mulloway, gummy sharks and bronze whalers.

Hats off to the very knowledgeable team at Southern Sports & Tackle for their tips! These guys love their fishing as well, so make sure you swing by their store for the best gear and advice before wetting a line around Esperance.

Great Southern catches
We're pretty lucky to have some of the coolest looking squid off the WA coast in such great numbers. Not only are they are one of the most sustainable (and easy) species to target, but they provide such a delicious feed. How's the red colours on this beauty landed by @thetidaltale off our southern coastline this week!

Boats

Strong winds kept boats on trailers this week and there doesn’t appear to be much let-up in sight. If weather windows can be found, maybe fishing in close in King George Sound for KG’s and squid could be worth a crack. Dropping a few nets in Princess Royal Harbour for blue swimmer crabs also could be an option. Denmark’s Wilson Inlet holds a variety of species including juvenile salmon, herring, flathead and King George whiting and could be worth a shot for dinghy anglers, while the King and Kalgan rivers could reward bream chasers fishing from kayaks. While the weather doesn’t look ideal, there might be a brief window to duck out on Sunday morning but aim to get back in by around 9am.

Shore-based

Sheltered locations were the only options this week, with the town marina and Emu Point producing mainly squid and herring. A few small King George whiting and one or two juvenile salmon have been caught around Emu Point as well. It’s unlikely the conditions will ease for scoop netters, who had been finding blue swimmer crabs in Princess Royal Harbour. Ironically, at Windy Harbour early this week a few resident salmon and some decent tailor were picked up in a rare weather window.

Cheers to the Trailblazers Albany crew for their tips this week! Swing by their store if you're after some top gear and advice ahead of your next fishing trip. Remember, you'll also catch just as many fish off the beaches than the rocks and it is always much safer to go with this option on the south coast.

South-West catches

Boats

Crabs have been the main game at both ends of the Leschenault Estuary and in Bunbury Harbour, with numbers and sizes holding up well. Most crews were having little trouble getting a feed in just a few runs. It has been worthwhile trolling for chopper tailor between pot runs, with fish around the 35cm mark plentiful. Conditions have not been ideal for heading offshore from Bunbury, but squid have been taken in 5-15m depths and King George whiting have been caught in 20-30m. Both these species have been in reasonable numbers in Geographe Bay as well. Pelagic action has been quiet, but a few big Samsonfish have been caught in 15m and beyond out from Bunbury, they have also been active at the back of the reefs in Geographe Bay. Sunday morning is looking like a nice window for the boaties.

Shore-based

Scoop netters have been getting their fair share of crabs in the Leschenault Estuary and divers have found plenty there as well. Divers have also targeted beaches south of town such as Peppermint Grove and Forrest, while the Cut Beach has held good numbers too. Yellowfin whiting have been plentiful and widespread as well, with good numbers being landed on small vibes and surface lures. Chopper tailor and herring have been the prominent bycatch. In the Collie River bream and soapy mulloway have been active and a few giant herring have been landed. Beach fishing has been consistent, although weed has been a problem in recent days. Back Beach has fished steadily for herring and chopper tailor, while Dalyellup has held these species and also some solid juvenile salmon around the kilo mark. Herring and tailor have been in good numbers at Myalup, Binningup and Preston beaches, where sand whiting and at times yellowfin whiting have also been biting. The Bunbury Cut has yielded good mixed bags of herring, chopper tailor, sand whiting, tarwhine and skippy. Busselton Jetty has been producing herring and squid, along with Samsonfish in the deeper water at the end, while a good Samsonfish was landed near Castle Rock by an angler chasing salmon in the middle of the week. Most of the beaches in Geographe Bay and around Dunsborough have offered herring, yellowfin whiting and sand whiting.

Chasing abalone this Saturday from 7-8am? Surf Life Saving WA have given it the green light to go ahead, but with a MEDIUM RISK. Just remember to put your safety first, fish with mates, check the forecast, use the right gear and do NOT go in the water if you aren't a confident swimmer. You can find the best tips to help keep you safe and also catch abalone with more ease by watching our abalone safety video here.

Big cheers to Whitey's Tackle & Camping for their top fishing tips as always! If you're in Australind or Bunbury and are keen to wet a line throughout our South-West make sure you ask their very friendly team who love their fishing for advice and stock up on gear at their store. If you're in Busselton, the 2 Oceans Tackle team are also incredibly helpful.

If you're willing to put in the distance on foot and find remote areas holding deep water with plenty of snags (like fallen trees), then you'll have decent odds of plucking a couple of redfin perch out of their hidey-hole. Soft plastics is the way to go and this is where snagless hooks come in handy. Photo credit: @freshwest_
Redfin have been the main species targeted this week and plenty of small ones have been found in the Collie River around the townsite. Small hard-bodied lures including the Hurricane Slam 47 have worked well on them. A few redfin have also been landed in the Capel River and the Pemberton region has held a few in the deeper pockets. Kayak fishers could have luck fishing the deeper sections of Wellington and Harvey dams.
Mandurah and surrounds
This has been by far one of the best crabbing seasons in Mandurah's history and Brett, Ben and Huddy made the most of it out in the Peel-Harvey Inlet. Not only have crabs been in top numbers this summer all over the place, but they have also been in great sizes and packed full of sweet meat. Photo: @fishinwishinlife_official.

Boats: Drop netters are continuing to do well on blue swimmer crabs right throughout the Peel Harvey Estuary, while good numbers of tailor have been taken in the estuary’s channels and drop-offs. Often they have been swimming with bull herring and decent skippy. The FADs have held dolphinfish and there is also the chance of a wahoo, while on the Five-Fathom Bank, sizeable skippy and yellowtail kingfish have been found. Good numbers of sand whiting have been taken inside the Five. At the Bouvards, small Spanish mackerel have been taken by spearfishers, while squid have been caught on the weed beds off Melros.

Land-based: Yellowfin whiting sizes have been down in the Peel-Harvey Estuary with many regulars believing the bigger fish have moved out to the ocean and are holding on the shoreline at Seascapes and Falcon. The estuary is still rewarding those scooping for blue swimmer crabs, especially early in the morning and at sunset, while the marina and canals in the system have held a nice mix of smaller species including herring, whiting and tarwhine, along with lots of juvenile garfish which could become a snack for something bigger. The Mandurah bridges have offered herring and chopper tailor on the incoming tide as has the Dawesville Cut, which also held plenty of squid. Tailor fishing has been slow with the beaches north of town fishing best, while sheltered beaches such as Avalon and Umbrella have produced lots of herring and garfish.

Just like the Mandurah crabs, these guys are in red hot numbers too, with yellowfin whiting running wild across the flats this summer. They are still in great numbers and @castawaybell found the schools this week, so make sure you venture into Tackle World Miami for the best tips on how you can enjoy some topwater yellowfin action.

Thinking of wetting a line around Mandurah? These great tips were courtesy of the super friendly and helpful team at Tackle World Miami so make sure you swing by their store for the best tips and gear before your next fishing trip!

SECRET HARBOUR / PORT KENNEDY / ROCKINGHAM / SAFETY BAY / WARNBRO SOUND

Boats: King George whiting and squid catches have been consistent with Mangles Bay, Parmelia Bank, the inside of Garden Island and behind Penguin Island all producing. Skippy have also been in good numbers on the broken ground, especially round the Garden Island causeway and Samsonfish have been caught a bit deeper out. Solid sand whiting have been widespread in Cockburn Sound. Dolphinfish, wahoo and tuna have been around the FADs. Good tailor were taken at Mewstones, where at times big Samsonfish have muscled in on the action. Drop netting for blue swimmer crabs continues to be productive in most of Cockburn Sound, which has also produced big sand whiting.

Land-based: Weed has hampered beach fishing, but plenty of tailor have been caught from Secret Harbour right through to Kwinana in the mornings and evenings. The sizes have dipped with most fish now in the 30-40cm range. Soapy mulloway around 60-80cm have turned up at times, while herring and sand whiting catches have been a consistent bycatch. With warmer weather returning, yellowfin whiting could show up near the power station and also at the Penguin Island spit which has offered herring, chopper tailor, sand whiting and the odd flathead. The Ammo Jetty, Woodman Point, Rockingham and Palm Beach jetties have held herring, chopper tailor and the odd sand whiting. Land-based squid fishing has been hard work with Point Peron probably the best bet. Scoop netters chasing blue swimmer crabs have done best in Mangles Bay, while those diving for them have found plenty on ground straight out from the Rockingham foreshore.

Perth catches
The Metro FADs were loaded with dolly's this week, with @impact_zone_spearfishing taking this solid bull home for a delicious feed. It's not just dolphinfish doing the rounds there at the moment and these buoys are becoming a pelagic paradise for yellowtail kingfish, wahoo, and billfish. You can see all FADs coordinates here.

Boats

Pelagics were firing earlier in the week with yellowtail kingfish averaging 90cm taken off Mindarie and at the West End of Rottnest Island. Shark mackerel and Spanish mackerel were active south of Rottnest and one or two wahoo were sighted north of the island. The small dolphinfish that frequent the FADs were mostly taking live baits or stickbaits but a few rogue bull dolphinfish were speared. Big King George whiting have been caught between Rottnest Island and the Five-Fathom Bank. Squid have been holding deep in the bays at Rottnest, in 10-12m, but off South Fremantle they have been in 6-9m. Kayakers dropping nets in 2-3m have been picking up blue swimmer crabs off Coogee, while at the Windmills smaller King George whiting, sand whiting and squid have been caught. City Beach and Cottesloe have held lots of sand whiting in 10-15m. The Three-Mile Reef has produced a few King George whiting, along with the odd Samsonfish. A big Swan River mulloway was pulled from Mosman Bay earlier this week, while those chasing tailor in the middle to lower reaches of the Swan have found floating weed a problem and have done better when using deeper diving lures. The good run on blue swimmer crabs has continued, but they seem to have moved to the edges of the drop-offs and channels with some of the better catches coming from 4-11m depths. Better spots have been downstream from the Narrows. All mornings over the coming few days look good for a send out but Sunday and Monday morning are looking best.

Shore-based

North Mole has been quieter than usual, but a few big tailor have been taken there at times. Around Cottesloe anglers have enjoyed good sunrise sessions, landing 35-45cm tailor on stickbaits and when weed has not been a problem tailor have been caught at Hale Road, City Beach and Mullaloo. Herring have been at Mullaloo as well, while Pinnaroo Point has held small sand whiting. Bigger tailor and small pink snapper have been taken by drone fishers around Yanchep. The marinas around South Fremantle have been plagued with blowies but they also have held a lot of herring, chopper tailor and tarwhine. Soft plastics and small stickbaits have worked well on these species this week. Divers have been swimming from shore and were picking up blue swimmer crabs at Rockingham and a bit further south. Fishing has slowed in the Swan River, but chopper tailor have been in caught at most jetties and drop-offs at dawn and dusk. Canning Bridge has held tailor up to 50cm, while the Narrows, Applecross, Point Walter, Claremont and East Fremantle should be worth a crack as well. Flathead and flounder fishing has been a lot slower. Good models of both species have been taken in the lower reaches, but not in big numbers. A lot of the flathead have also been undersized. The Causeway has offered bream, soapy mulloway and flathead, while Redcliffe, Bayswater, Maylands, Garratt Road Bridge and Guildford have produced these species as well. A lot of the bream have been undersized, as have the soapies but some good flathead have been landed. Sunday morning is looking best for a land-based flick.
