Pic of the Week!

This 79.6kg absolute monster of a cobia landed by Jazz Charters near Rottnest made waves around the fishing world this week considering it was quite possibly the largest ever landed via rod and reel! Not bad for a fish landed via soft plastic on 30lb line and a Shimano Saragosa SW 6000 reel! The otoliths from this fish are planned to be collected and analysed so we can determine the age of this awesome specimen.

KEEP THE SAND BETWEEN YOUR TOES IF FISHING OFF THE SOUTH-WEST OR SOUTHERN COAST THIS WEEKEND
Heads up to all South-West and South Coast fishers thinking of fishing off the rocks this weekend (22-23th Feb) in areas from Cape Naturaliste to Esperance and possibly near Eucla.

The Bureau of Meteorology has issued the following heads up for possible dangerous fishing conditions for this Saturday and Sunday. While the wind might look favourable in some areas, the swell height and period looks very risky. So make sure you keep the sand between your toes if you decide to fish from the shore.

INFO:
- A southerly cold front passing on Friday will generate an unusually high South-Westerly swell for this time of year.
- South to South-Westerly waves with swell heights to around 3.5–4.5m from early Saturday morning, with swell period of 11-14 seconds.
- Swell heights gradually decreasing below 3m from west to east during Sunday.

Keeping safe comes down to better decision-making from improved alerts, communication and awareness. No fish is worth risking your life for. If you know of anyone heading out for a fish in these regions during this time, make sure you share this warning with them.

Broome catches
@_jkingy with a chrome beauty of a barra from the creek system this week!

Boats

Once again most of the action has been confined to Roebuck Bay, where the ledges have produced the odd northern mulloway, while tripletail have been active around the moorings and beneath floating debris. Small soft plastics and prawn baits have worked well on tripletail. The Fingers has produced mainly threadfin salmon while Crab Creek has produced threadfin salmon and a few barramundi, mainly on live baits but with the smaller tides on the way lures should start to come into play in the creek systems. Dampier Creek has held the odd barramundi and a few mangrove jack. Mud crabs have been hit and miss in most systems. Saturday’s forecast is looking best over the coming days.

Shore-based

Nice bluebone have been caught from the rocks at Entrance Point, which has also offered small trevally and queenfish. The latter two species have also been caught at the Town Beach Jetty. Willie Creek has fished well for blue-nosed salmon and mangrove jack. In the Fitzroy River live baits have accounted for some good barramundi at the Cuttings.

Big thanks to the crew from Tackle World Broome for their tips! Make sure you pay them a visit for the best gear and advice for your next fishing trip.
Exmouth catches
The @onstrikecharters crew doing what they do best - putting fishers onto some cracking species like this healthy coral trout.

Boats

Weather patterns since cyclone Zelia made landfall seem to have improved the water clarity on the west side of the Cape and crews have been getting into some good fish. Billfishing out wide has been quieter than usual but good numbers of black marlin have been sighted inshore. Goldband snapper have been active in 80-120m and in 150m and beyond pearl perch, big cod and ruby snapper have been landed. Spangled emperor, Rankin cod and a few red emperor have been in 40m depths, while Spanish mackerel have been active at the back of the reef and spangled emperor and Chinaman cod have been in the lagoons. Spanish mackerel and golden trevally have been caught at the Muirons, along with quite a few red emperor in 20m and red-throat emperor towards Peak Island, where Rankin cod have been in good numbers and red emperor have been caught in ones and twos. In Exmouth Gulf blue-lined emperor have been the main species taken from the shoals and school mackerel have been widespread. On the offshore flats fly-fishers have encountered queenfish, golden trevally and giant trevally, while there have been reports of blue swimmer crabs around Exmouth and Bullara stations. Sunday is looking best for the boaties this week.

Shore-based

Tuskies pull seriously hard when you hook them in the shallows and the @shallowwatersafaris crew know exactly where to take their clients to experience this via spin or fly.

Whiting have been in good numbers in Exmouth Gulf, but the better catches have come from those using small pieces of prawn rather than lures. The flats at Learmonth and Bundegi have been the better spots and the jetties at both locations have offered late-afternoon and night-time squid, mangrove jack around the pylons and small queenfish and trevally. A few mangrove jack have been in the town marina, along with bream and cod, and some decent spangled emperor were taken there a few weeks back. From VLF Bay to the tip of the Cape spangled emperor have been the main species targeted but their numbers have waned. An 80cm Spanish mackerel was landed at Oysters and cod and small giant trevally also have been caught along this stretch. Around Pilgramunna blue-nosed salmon in the 30-40cm range have been active, while the lagoons at Winderbandi and Tantabiiddi have held spangled emperor. A few mangrove jack have also been around the jetties on the high tide at night.

These great tips were courtesy of the friendly team at Tackle World Exmouth. Swing by their store for the best advice and gear ahead of your next trip!

Kalbarri catches
@nickihuntfishing pushed her forearms and biceps to the limit bringing in this solid GT north of town this week. A great catch and release species, but a break might be needed after pulling in one this size in the heat!

Boats

The big news this week was the landing of a sailfish, reportedly around the Three-Mile Reef, during the Kalbarri Offshore and Angling Club’s monthly competition and pelagic action has been hot for other species, with several kinds of tuna and plenty of Spanish mackerel, yellowtail kingfish and  bonito landed. Tuna have been seen jumping around south of Red Bluff, while most of the Spanish mackerel action has been around the Sand Patch. Sunday and Monday morning’s forecasts look best.

Shore-based

In the Murchison River mangrove jack to 50cm have been caught by bream fishers around the marina boat pens, where a good mulloway was hooked and lost this week. Bream and cod catches have been steady in the system. Mud crabs and just-sized blue swimmer crabs turned up in decent numbers. A few yellowfin whiting have been caught at the Sand Spit. Good-sized tailor have been caught at the river mouth, Wittecarra, Red Bluff and Syphons, while on the other side of the river Oyster Reef and Frustrations have yielded small mulloway decent tailor and a few pink snapper. A Spanish mackerel was landed on a balloon set-up at Wagoe this week. Wagoe has also produced some big tailor.

Shout out to Dean from Kalbarri Sports and Dive for his tips! Feel free to venture into his store to ask for advice if you're wetting a line around Kalbarri!
Geraldton catches
Well worth the litres burned in fuel! A lovely marlin hooked while trolling around the Abrolhos Islands for @jaredgroom67.

Boats

Pelagic action has been patchy with most crews fishing at Pensioners Bank struggling. Bigger boats have been getting among them towards the Abrolhos Islands, encountering tuna species in the 3-4kg range in big numbers along with mostly school-sized 7-9kg Spanish mackerel. At Pensioners Bank fishers have missed out on the mackies, but they have got a few tuna on the 16-17m edge. Most of the pelagics have been caught on trolled Halco Laser Pros, Rapala X-Raps and Nomad DTXs. Plenty of bonito have been about as well. Water clarity has been hit-or-miss, but some good squid have been taken at Point Moore and Separation Point at times. It’s still not looking very inviting for the boaties this weekend given the high wind and swell, but larger boats might find it better on Monday morning.

Shore-based

Blue swimmer crabs have been caught by drop netters in the Fishing Boat Harbour and at the Batavia Coast Marina, where bonito have been seen swimming. At the eastern breakwater and the rocks near Dome Cafe nice mixed bags of herring, tailor and dart have been taken by fishers using burley. Bonito could be a chance there as well. The Lives has produced school-sized whiting, the odd herring and small tailor. Tailor fishing has been hard going this week, but Southgates and Tarcoola have produced a few in the evenings, along with dart and herring. The points at Greenough have offered these species as well, along with pike. At Flat Rocks there have been a few tailor and lots of small mulloway. Weed has been a problem at many beaches. A range of northern species, including mud crabs, trevally varieties and mangrove jack have turned up in the Greenough River and anglers fishing the flats there using shallow-diving hard-bodied lures have also caught giant herring, whiting and bream.

Thanks to the team at Geraldton Sports Centre for their tips! They will happily provide you with great gear and the solid advice for your next fishing trip.
Lancelin catches
Peter Fullarton teamed up with Brendan Gow from On Point Adventures for a fun day of trying to catch snapper off the cast but it was tailor running wild, with plenty of fish over 60cm landed! A reminder that you can only take two tailor over 50cm per person to ensure the breeding cycle of this great species continues.

Boats

There were plenty of people making the most of some glassy conditions this week, with most trying to troll up a mackerel with mixed results. Those who managed to duck out picked up a few smaller Spanish mackerel, Samsonfish, school mackerel and bonito. Out at the FAD’s fishers have been finding the dolphinfish were in residence, with some good catches reported. Around the 20m depth line was also great to score a feed of fat sand whiting. Sunday looks a tad too difficult to launch but Monday morning looks better.

Shore-based

The fishing has been running hot and cold off the beaches, with some sensational sessions to be had and others returning doughnuts. Mick Malton had a great night landing a number of larger tailor and five mulloway. Reef breaks and gutters have held some very big tailor, with the fish ambushing passing mullet schools. Drone fishers have caught dhufish, snapper and baldchin groper this week. Plenty of dart were present in the shore breaks and gutters. Within the bay, big yellowfin whiting have been in the shallows. Sunday morning looks decent for a land-based flick.

Big thanks to Peter Fullarton for his tips on what's biting around Lancelin each week! If you want Peter to put you on to the fish directly, make sure you check out his Tailored Treks Tours page. Always a great time and Peter knows the best spots around Lancelin like the back of his hand.

Esperance catches
There has been great numbers of bronzies landed outside of town over the past few weeks and this was just one of three captures in one evening for @jesse.smithson!

Boats

Big numbers of nannygai have been caught at Wilson and Hood islands, while thumping breaksea cod have been landed at Humlaria Reef. Samsonfish to 30kg have been caught at Mondrain Island, while harlequin fish and big queen snapper have hit the deck at Lion and Black islands. Tuna to 10kg have been caught at Figure of Eight Island, while there have been lots of sand whiting off Chapman Point. Big flathead have been taken at Flat Rock, while Esperance Bay has held herring, snook and lots of squid. Caution is advised for that dangerous south-westerly swell this weekend, so put your safety first.

Shore-based

Gummy sharks, small bronze whalers and mulloway have been on the chew at Israelite Bay, while Poison Creek has held gummy sharks and big skippy. Gummy sharks and lots of salmon have been caught at Alexander Bay, while Warrenup has yielded salmon and tailor. The 10-Mile Lagoon and Salmon Beach have fished well early in the morning for salmon on most days, while the start of Wylie Bay and the foreshore have been King George whiting hotspots. Big sand whiting have been caught at Blue Haven Beach, while the Town and Taylor Street jetties have offered squid and herring at night. King George whiting and skippy have been the main catches at Bandy Creek Boat Harbour. Stick to the beaches if having a land-based fish this weekend, that big south-westerly swell looks way too risky to even consider fishing off the rocks.

Hats off to the very knowledgeable team at Southern Sports & Tackle for their tips! These guys love their fishing as well, so make sure you swing by their store for the best gear and advice before wetting a line around Esperance.

Great Southern catches
Sam Wasmann @sammo177's crew managed to find some great fish east of Albany, with pink snapper, dhufish and breaksea cod all hitting the deck.

Boats

Herring have been thick in King George Sound, which has also held reasonable King George whiting and sand whiting but squid fishing has been slow. Last weekend’s good weather enabled crews to get out to the coral ground where good catches of reef species were achieved. Queen snapper and breaksea cod dominated catches, while a few crews that went out a bit wider landed nannygai. While the wind looks favourable on Sunday morning, the swell is looking very risky, so we advise putting your safety first.

Shore-based

Herring and sand whiting have been plentiful at most beaches, while King George whiting and yellowfin whiting have been caught on the flats around Emu Point on vibe lures. Emu Point has also held a few squid, as has the town marina, while Gull Rock has offered herring, skippy and whiting. Ledge Beach has held small salmon and herring. The flats in Oyster Harbour have yielded flounder, herring and bream, while in Princess Royal Harbour scoopers have had to work a bit harder for a feed of crabs. At the Sand Patch a few salmon have been landed and tarwhine have been in good numbers. Frenchman Bay has produced squid, along with herring and small King George whiting, while the Kalgan River has held bream and mulloway and the King River has held bream. Cheynes Beach has fished well for herring and tarwhine. Fosters Beach and Bremer Bay have been producing salmon at times, while a couple of weeks ago a big school of salmon was reportedly chasing herring on to the sand at Narrikup, suggesting things are starting to heat up for an early salmon run. In Wilson Inlet juvenile salmon, herring and bream have been the main catches. Samsonfish have come from the stones around Lowlands when the swells have been down. If you’re going to fish off the coast this weekend, keep the sand between your toes and do not fish off the rocks given the swell warning along the south coast this weekend.

Cheers to the Trailblazers Albany crew for their tips this week! Swing by their store if you're after some top gear and advice ahead of your next fishing trip. Remember, you'll also catch just as many fish off the beaches than the rocks and it is always much safer to go with this option on the south coast.

South-West catches
When the conditions have been more favourable plenty of these tasty critters have been doing the rounds in depths of 2-8m, with drifting working nicely. Trudy Morehouse @squidqueen.wa made the most of the action this week.

Boats

Much of the pelagic action seems to have eluded fishers in Bunbury waters who have sighted a few Spanish mackerel around the Bouvards, but have failed to land any. Instead, most crews have had to content themselves with King George whiting in the 20-30m depths and squid on the weed in 8-15m. The broken ground that has held KG’s has also produced some nice skippy and a few Samsonfish, although small sharks have been a nuisance at times. Sand whiting, medium-sized King George whiting and squid have been caught in Geographe Bay. In the Leschenault Estuary most crews have had little trouble getting a feed of good-sized blue swimmer crabs and in between pulling up their drop nets have found trolling for chopper tailor productive. The crabs have been widespread throughout the system although numbers in the Collie River have dipped. Sunday morning looks the best option this weekend.

Shore-based

Yellowfin whiting have been widespread on the flats in the Leschenault Estuary with surface lures working best when it is calm and vibes getting the job done when there is chop on the surface. Some nice chopper tailor and a few herring have been among the whiting bycatch. Divers have had the edge on scoopers when chasing blue swimmer crabs in the estuary but both camps have been getting a feed. Bream catches have been consistent in the Collie River. In the Bunbury Cut herring chopper tailor, sand whiting and skippy have been caught, while Back Beach and other beaches near Bunbury have fished well for herring and chopper tailor. Herring have been especially thick at Dalyellup. Beaches north of town have held herring and bigger tailor, with Myalup one of the better options. Preston Beach has held some nice yellowfin whiting. There has been plenty of squid ink on the Busselton Jetty and herring have been in good numbers as well, while there have been reports a group of young fishers have been doing well on small yellowtail kingfish in the 40-60cm range. Reports of salmon schools have started to surface with big schools seen at Injidup and Canal Rocks and some good catches were coming from the Walpole area. Beaches and rock platforms south of Dunsborough have produced Samsonfish, breaksea cod and small dhufish. Most of the beaches in Geographe Bay have offered herring, sand whiting and yellowfin whiting. If you’re going to fish off the coast this weekend, keep the sand between your toes and do not fish off the rocks given the swell warning along the South-West and South coast this weekend.

Big cheers to Whitey's Tackle & Camping for their top fishing tips as always! If you're in Australind or Bunbury and are keen to wet a line throughout our South-West make sure you ask their very friendly team who love their fishing for advice and stock up on gear at their store. If you're in Busselton, the 2 Oceans Tackle team are also incredibly helpful.

While they haven't been in enormous numbers over these hotter months, redfin perch can still be found in deeper pockets where the water tends to be cooler, with @one_worm_tony producing the goods.
Plenty of small rainbow trout have been seen breaking the surface at Honeymoon Pool on the Collie River but the fish have been very finnicky, turning their noses up at live baits, Berkley trout bombs, flies, hard-bodied lures, vibes and soft plastics. Redfin perch have been hard to find but the deeper sections of Wellington Dam and waters around the Collie townsite have produced a few. At Harvey Dam redfin perch have been taken in low light, often before sunrise, with scented dark-coloured Razor’s Edge soft plastics or big-bladed spinners proving effective.
Mandurah and surrounds
He's been fishing up a storm over the past couple of months and young @hunter__hebb made the most of the brilliant yellowfin whiting fishing in Mandurah's inlets this week, with great fish like this turning up in waters less than 30cm deep.

Boats: Mandurah hasn’t enjoyed the wild pelagic action of northern waters, but not for want of trying with plenty of crews burning fuel trying to crack the Spanish mackerel code. There have been small dolphinfish caught at the FADs and some decent yellowtail kingfish were landed at the back of the Five-Fathom Bank. Big sand whiting have been thick in 8-10m inside the Five, while out from Dawesville some big flathead have been picked up by King George whiting chasers in 30m. King George action has been on the slower side. Squid fishers have been doing well on the weed banks off Seascapes and Falcon. In the Peel Harvey Estuary drop netters have been getting plenty of meaty blue swimmer crabs, but have fared better further into the system with Heron and Coodanup among the better spots. Tailor catches have improved in the estuary too with good fish taken just back from the Dawesville Cut and at the Sticks. Hordes of herring, good numbers of skippy and a few juvenile salmon have been among the bycatch. Sunday and Monday morning look more inviting for a fish off the boat.

Land-based: Yellowfin whiting catches have been steady with the fish widespread in the system and the tings generally more active on the higher tides. A school of very big yellowfin, some nudging 40cm, was encountered on the sandbank just inside of the Dawesville Cut but the fish were reluctant to bite. Whiting chasers on the flats have been getting some good tailor, herring and skippy in their bycatch. The Mandurah traffic bridges and the Dawesville Cut have fished well for squid, herring, chopper tailor and skippy. In the ocean, chopper tailor have been caught at White Hills and bigger tailor have come from San Remo. Herring and sand whiting have been in good numbers at most beaches and at Melros and Seacapes a few yellowfin whiting have been caught, but often sand whiting and herring have beaten them to the bait.

Thinking of wetting a line around Mandurah? These great tips were courtesy of the super friendly and helpful team at Tackle World Miami so make sure you swing by their store for the best tips and gear before your next fishing trip!

SECRET HARBOUR / PORT KENNEDY / ROCKINGHAM / SAFETY BAY / WARNBRO SOUND

Boats: Pelagic action has been red hot this week with Spanish mackerel around the 8kg mark being landed around Garden Island, along with shark mackerel and one or two yellowtail kingfish. Slow-trolling live baits or deep-diving hard bodies has done the trick. On broken ground big Samsonfish have been caught along with some solid skippy. King George whiting catches have been good also with fish pushing the 50cm mark landed between Garden Island and Rottnest Island, but squid fishing has been slow. The inshore reefs have also yielded a few Spanish mackerel and yellowtail kingfish for spearfishers. Tailor have been in good numbers on the inshore reefs with Mewstones fishing well. Cockburn Sound continues to reward drop netters with blue swimmer crabs, with the 3-6m depths on the drop-offs the most productive. Many crews have been getting crayfish on the inshore reefs and adding their quota of blue swimmer crabs on the way home for a seafood platter. Sunday morning until midday looks more comfortable for the boaties.

Land-based: Those diving for blue swimmer crabs off the Rockingham foreshore have continued to do well but many scoopers have decided it’s easier to drive down to Mandurah to get a feed. The summer tailor run has been going strong on the beaches with Long Point, Port Kennedy and Secret Harbour the pick of the spots. There have been few reports of mulloway catches from local beaches, but herring and sand whiting have been in good numbers at most spots, especially at the Penguin Island spit and in Safety Bay, where flathead and flounder are also a chance. Yellowfin whiting and flathead could also be worth targeting near the grain terminal and at the Penguin Island spit. Woodman Point, the Ammo Jetty, Rockingham Jetty and Palm Beach Jetty have been consistent for chopper tailor and herring. They have also held big numbers of scaly mackerel, which could bring in a few bonito as traditionally these locations have fished well for them.  A good tailor of around 50cm was taken at the Ammo Jetty this week. Squid chasers should fish the jetties at night, but for daytime missions Point Peron has been the go. A King George whiting of more than 40cm was caught there last week and Point Peron usually produces herring and the odd sand whiting as well.

These great fishing tips were provided by the friendly team at Compleat Angler & Camping World in Rockingham, so make sure you chat to their experienced crew in store and stock up before heading out!
Perth catches
@kimdevries190 took out Champion Female in the latest Marlin Cup held last weekend, with this lovely blue marlin landed offshore in the Perth Canyon depths helping her claim the win!

Boats

Game fishing has been excellent with plenty of big blue marlin being raised in the Rottnest Trench, along with lots of tuna. Tuna and dolphinfish were taken around the FADs and the West End of Rottnest Island has been thick with tuna and yellowtail kingfish, while Parker Point has produced a couple of Spanish mackerel. Big Samsonfish have been pulled up from behind Rottnest, while the big news this week was the pending world record cobia of 79.6kg taken aboard Jazz Charters, also near Rottnest. The island’s bays have yielded herring, King George whiting, sand whiting and squid. Spanish mackerel have been taken off Mindarie and the inshore northern reefs have fished well for skippy and tailor and King George whiting on the broken ground. Schools of bonito have also been sighted too. King George whiting catches have been good off Two Rocks in 30m, while off Ocean Reef they have been in 8-10m. Sand whiting catches have been down off City Beach and Cottesloe. Squid have been in a wide range of depths this week, from 2-11m. Waters off South Fremantle and Coogee have held a few, as did the Windmills. Kayakers dropping nets for blue swimmer crabs off Bathers Beach have been doing well, while just out from Coogee tailor have been in good numbers. Sand whiting and King George whiting have been among the squid at Windmills, while tailor, herring and skippy have been caught at Stragglers. In the Swan River good chopper tailor have been taken on the troll downstream from the Narrows, while drop-netting for blue swimmer crabs has been productive from Perth Water to the river mouth. At least one big mulloway was landed around Claremont this week. A reminder that the Rotto swim kicks off tomorrow, so expect the ramps to be very busy early on. Sunday is looking like the better day for a fish off the boat though.

Plenty of great inshore species did the rounds this week off Perth, with a chuffed Savannah Randall catching two healthy King George whiting off Mindarie alongside her grandparents and @pepitos_fishing_wa enjoying a ghreat tailor session on stickbaits around Freo's inshore reefs.

Shore-based

Fremantle Harbour has been full of scaly mackerel and yellowtail, along with the odd herring and lots of mainly small tarwhine. At North Mole bonito have been landed in the early mornings, often brought in by the burley being used to catch herring and garfish. South Mole has held herring and garfish too, but no reports of bonito have come from there. The rock walls around South Fremantle have held a few chopper tailor and herring in the afternoons but the blowies have been a nuisance. An angler fishing from the shore at Rottnest this week picked up a Samsonfish and a yellowtail kingfish in the one session, with both fish decent-sized. A few people have been swimming out from Bathers Beach and were picking up blue swimmer crabs. Beach fishers around Cottesloe have found reasonable numbers of tailor, but sizes have been down. At Floreat and City Beach there have been plenty of herring in the mornings and just the odd tailor. The northern beaches have held some good tailor in the afternoons and smaller tailor have been caught inside the Hillarys marina at night along with herring. Tailor have been active around Quinns and Yanchep, where droners and casters have also caught school mulloway and just-sized pink snapper. Towards Wilbinga a small Spanish mackerel was landed by a drone fisher from the shore. In the Swan River, East Fremantle has been one of the better areas this week and has offered yellowfin whiting late at night, along with river prawns for dab netters, while scoop netters after blue swimmer crabs have done well on the run-out tide at night. Land-based tailor fishing in the Swan has been a lot slower, but most jetties in the lower and middle reaches have produced a couple. Flathead and flounder fishing has been very slow, but a couple of small giant herring have been landed, one by a tailor fisher at Applecross Jetty and the other taken on a small hard-bodied lure on bream gear in the Canning River. Bream have been in average numbers around structure from the Causeway right up to Guildford, but sizes have been small and they have been more interested in bait than lures. Soapy mulloway have been swimming with them and they too have been small. Sunday morning looks best for a land-based fish.

A big thanks to Anglers Fishing World in Fremantle for their great tips! These guys love their fishing just as much as we all do, so make sure you ask their super friendly team for advice and stock up before wetting a line off the land or boat!
