Fishing Report
07/03/25
Salmon season is here! Due to the effects of the marine heatwave and the warm water that has moved and settled down the WA coast, it's anticipated that the salmon schools will not migrate as far north this year as salmon prefer cooler waters. A good place to start fishing would be along our picturesque beaches on our Southern coastline (avoid the rocks, this is much more dangerous). Hopefully the schools reach our South-West as we head deeper into autumn! Click here for a full rundown on tips, safety advice and competition details for this year's salmon run!

Pic of the Week!

An absolute cracker of a red emperor on the spear for @joeyatzeni who had a very successful trip west to Exmouth. With captures like this it's probably safe to assume he'll be back.

NOT SURE WHO TO VOTE FOR TOMORROW? HERE IS WHAT EACH PARTY IS PROMISING FOR FISHERS
With the state election underway tomorrow, Recfishwest is pushing to ensure fishers are the winner, regardless of what party is elected.

For more info on what each party is promising for fishers, click here.

Late last year we presented our election platform to all contesting parties that aims to achieve better fishing experiences for 750,000 of us who wet a line every year, this includes policies and investments to improve and protect what we all love to do.

We've called for more abundant fish stocks, healthier aquatic environments, better fishing access, less red tape, lower licence fees and adaptations to combat climate change - just to name a few.

Stay tuned to our channels for the latest updates on what we can expect from this weekend's winning party to help improve fishing across our state.
Broome catches
Youngster Flynn just smashed his PB barra at Lake Kununurra this week alongside @good_dhu_dhu! It was already a good day's fishing then it turned into a brilliant day after this chrome beauty engulfed a live bait. Very proud parents and a very chuffed Flynn.

Boats

Very big tides limited fishing this week, but the Fingers fished well for threadfin salmon to 96cm and a few decent barramundi were pulled from Crab Creek. Blue-nosed salmon were prolific throughout Crab Creek as well and were taking almost anything, providing a delicious feed for many fishers. Mud crabs were caught at both the Fingers and Crab Creek, while a few bluebone were landed at Entrance Point. The north-westerly winds are sticking around over the weekend but Sunday is looking best for the boaties at this stage. Expect a bit of rain next week.

Shore-based

In the Fitzroy River good barramundi have been landed at the Cuttings and cherabin have been in good numbers as well. Gantheaume Point has fished well from the shore for bluebone, while Entrance Point has also offered a few bluebone along with small trevally and queenfish. Willie Creek has held queenfish, trevally and blue-nosed salmon. Lake Kununurra headed out to the East Kimberley continued its great run of land-based barra catches, with live baits working best to rustle the larger fish.

Big thanks to the crew from Tackle World Broome for their tips! Make sure you pay them a visit for the best gear and advice for your next fishing trip.
Exmouth catches
@evolutionfishing found some thumper ruby snapper this week on the deep drop out west, one of the finest eating fish in the sea.

Boats

Billfishing action has been much more consistent inshore with plenty of blacks being caught starting from 100m depths. Good-sized tuna have been among the bycatch. Goldband snapper have fished well in 80-130m, while big ruby snapper, some up to 20kg, have been caught in 150-200m. Spanish mackerel in modest sizes have been in good numbers closer in on the west side, but so have the sharks, making fishing a challenge. For the best tips on how to keep your fish out of their jaws, visit our webpage dedicated to tips on how to avoid shark bite-off. The lagoons at Tantabiddi and Winderbandi have offered golden trevally and spangled emperor. At the Muirons, there have been good-sized Spanish mackerel, plenty of coral trout and thankfully, fewer sharks. Blue-lined emperor, coral trout and Rankin cod have been in good numbers in Exmouth Gulf, while queenfish and golden trevally have been caught at the bottom of the Gulf. Fly-fishers have been targeting the north-east of the Gulf, catching mainly golden trevally, while small school mackerel and a few decent Spaniards have been widespread in the Gulf. Squid fishing has been slow to steady. It's looking rather rough on the water this coming week, with the 2m swell and light to moderate south-westerly winds lingering around. The Gulf should hold the most sheltered water, but expect it to still be a tad choppy. Saturday morning might be your best bet until it looks to calm down from Wednesday morning onwards.

A lovely rainbow runner for @junior_grassy caught off the Pilbara coast this week! Apparently this fish is quite decent as sashimi.

Shore-based

In Exmouth Gulf, whiting have been in good numbers from Bundegi to Learmonth and areas of structure have produced good mangrove jack and cod. Cod and mangrove jack have been plentiful in the town marina, along with bream and small trevally. Queenfish and trevally up to 70cm have been smashing metal slices right along the Gulf, while from VLF Bay around to the west side spangled emperor catches have been decent, with quite a few bluebone picked up on unweighted prawn baits as well. Spangled emperor have been the main shore catches at Tantabiddi.

These great tips were courtesy of the friendly team at Tackle World Exmouth. Swing by their store for the best advice and gear ahead of your next trip!

Kalbarri catches
@nickihuntfishing and Leigh enjoyed flicking stickbaits into schools of baitfish before this nice trevally decided to make the reel sing i

Boats

Spanish mackerel around 10kg have been landed out from Red Bluff, the Blue Holes and at the Sand Patch, with the 30m depths fishing well. Trolling gardies on gang hooks has worked well, but the mackies have also been smashing deeper diving vibe lures that have an aggressive action and can dive down from 3-8m. A few tuna have been among the bycatch. Crayfish catches have been hit-and-miss of late. A few mackerel were caught by crews trolling off Wagoe. Those moderate southerly winds hanging around won't make it too easy out on the water combined with a 2m swell. This morning was manageable but it won't be too inviting for the boats again until Wednesday morning unless you don't mind a bit of chop.

Shore-based

There has been good early-morning tailor action along the Wittecarra to Red Bluff stretch, with some big dart swimming with the tailor. At the Wittecarra end a few fishers have reported big runs from what they believed to be mulloway. Bigger tailor to 65cm been taken from the coastal gorges and also by fishers throwing poppers at the river mouth. On the other side of the Murchison River, solid tailor and school mulloway have been the main catches. Blue swimmer crabs have returned to the river with good hauls taken in front of the shops near the river mouth, while mud crabs have been active around the marina jetty and the rock ledges further up river. Bream and cod have been caught around the marina jetty, while yellowfin whiting catches have been good at the Sand Spit and on the foreshore in front of the IGA. A mulloway was also hooked and lost at the Sand Spit this week. At Wagoe, decent tailor have been caught.

Shout out to Dean from Kalbarri Sports and Dive for his tips! Feel free to venture into his store to ask for advice if you're wetting a line around Kalbarri!
Geraldton catches

Boats

Crews have been working hard to land Spanish mackerel, keeping an eye for action around the bait schools, which have been small. South of town towards Dongara has fished best for the mackies with mostly deeper diving lures doing the trick, while tuna, mainly longtail, have been in good numbers on both sides of town. Bonito schools have been about, but they have been holding much further offshore this week. It's not looking ideal at all for the boaties this week with the strong southerlies and 2-3m swell putting a dampen on all boating activity.

Shore-based

Plenty of tailor have been along the coast, but getting to them has been the major problem with weed widespread. Spots that have been weed-free one day have generally been unfishable the next. Greenough has been a case in point, with both first and second points producing good numbers on different days. Mulloway to 70cm have been taken north of Drummond when weed hasn’t been a problem, and often a lot of beach driving has been needed to find clear spots. The north side of the Batavia Coast Marina has produced herring and squid when the water is clear.

Thanks to the team at Geraldton Sports Centre for their tips! They will happily provide you with great gear and the solid advice for your next fishing trip.
Lancelin catches
Peter Fullarton took Nigel who is visiting from England out for a fishing trip he won't forget any time soon, with some solid tailor smashing poppers on the surface.

Boats

Swell and wind has been up and down, which has limited boating. For those that did manage to duck out, Spanish mackerel catches were turning up when boaties put the hours in to trolling just behind the reefs and directly over them on occasions, with ganged gardies and deeper diving lures working best. Tuna were a common bycatch, with the 20-30m depths working well, although days with cleaner water produced better results. There has also been some good crayfish caught in close and plenty of herring and skippy were doing the rounds in the bay. It doesn't look inviting on the forecast for boats around Lancelin this week with the stronger southerly winds and 2m+ swell hanging around until at least Wednesday. Hopefully next weekend holds better conditions.

Shore-based

The beaches produced some snapper for fishers casting out baits into the gutters but the best results came for drone fishers dropping baits a few hundred meters out. Placing them just in front of the major reefs has been enough to entice the pinkies out, with most in the 50-70cm bracket. Some good size tailor were around where reef or whitewash could be found and there has also been very good numbers of mulloway for the time of year, mostly in school size. Given the conditions heading in this week, the lights at the jetty would be your best bet for herring and chopper tailor, unless you can find deep gutters of clean water that aren't filled with weed.

Big thanks to Peter Fullarton for his tips on what's biting around Lancelin each week! If you want Peter to put you on to the fish directly, make sure you check out his Tailored Treks Tours page. Always a great time and Peter knows the best spots around Lancelin like the back of his hand.

Esperance catches

Boats

Nannygai to 3kg have been caught at Figure of Eight Island, while thumping queen snapper have been landed at Charley and Cull Islands. Good numbers of Samsonfish have been at Mondrain Island, and Leg of Lamb has offered big breaksea cod. Tuna have been plentiful at Davey Island, while at Wylie Bay and West Beach, big sand whiting have been holding in 2-3m. Big King George whiting have been caught at Lovers Cove. Esperance Bay has produced lots of squid, snook and herring. Saturday morning is looking like the only inviting window this week for both the boaties and land-based fishers with lighter north-easterly winds and a swell hovering around 1m, but outside of that window the easterly winds and swell are a bit all over the place.

Shore-based

Out east, Israelite Bay has fished well for mulloway, gummy sharks and flathead, while Kennedy Beach has offered big skippy and salmon. Closer to town, Dunns Beach has held gummy sharks, salmon and skippy. Warrenup Beach has yielded salmon, smaller gummy sharks and big skippy, while salmon have been schooling in big numbers in the Munglingup area. In town, Salmon Beach has held big herring and salmon, while monster flathead have been caught at 10-Mile Lagoon. Both jetties have produced good numbers of squid and big herring at night. On the inland front, Wheatfield Lake has fished best for bream.

Hats off to the very knowledgeable team at Southern Sports & Tackle for their tips! These guys love their fishing as well, so make sure you swing by their store for the best gear and advice before wetting a line around Esperance.

Great Southern catches
They might not be as big as some of their other demersal cousins, but breaksea cod are widely regarded as one of the best eating out of the demersal family. @tad_bit_of_fishin and his mates managed to find a nice honey hole for this tasty species off Albany this week.

Boats

The odd crew that managed to hit the coral ground this week found small to medium-sized pink snapper, a lot of breaksea cod and the odd nannygai. In King George Sound, King George whiting, herring, squid and flathead were the main catches. Drop netting for blue swimmer crabs in Princess Royal Harbour has not been as productive as scooping. While very early this morning had a brief glass off, the forecast for the rest of the week is looking a tad haywire, with strong winds and swells around the 2m mark. Expect a bit of rain over the coming days also but heading up river looks to be the safer option.

Shore-based

Local beaches have held big numbers of herring along with the odd skippy. Ledge Point has fished well for both species, while Gull Rock has held mainly herring. At Sand Patch a few tarwhine, flathead and the odd resident salmon have been taken, while Cheynes Beach has yielded herring, skippy and a few juvenile salmon. Only sporadic reports of salmon catches have come in so far, but it’s worthwhile being prepared for when the run starts. The Trailblazers crew’s go-to lures for salmon are the Ocean’s Legacy Slingshots and the trusty Surecatch Knights. In town the marina has held mainly squid along with a few herring, while Frenchman Bay and Whaler’s Cove have produced a few squid, herring and small King George whiting. At Emu Point squid catches have been steady, with herring and whiting also caught. Blue swimmer crabs have been scooped in Oyster Harbour and Princess Royal Harbour, but numbers have started to wane. Bream fishing has been a little slow in the King and Kalgan rivers.

Heads up to all Southern fishers thinking of fishing off the rocks this Sunday and Monday (9-10 March) in areas from Cape Naturaliste to Albany.

The Bureau of Meteorology has issued the following heads up for possible dangerous fishing conditions for this Sunday and Monday. The swell period of up to 16 seconds and wave height of 3-3.5m means the waves will carry a lot of force, so keep the sand between your toes if you're having a land-based fish.

Cheers to the Trailblazers Albany crew for their fishing tips this week! Swing by their store if you're after some top gear and advice ahead of your next fishing trip. Remember, you'll also catch just as many fish off the beaches than the rocks and it is always much safer to go with this option on the south coast.

South-West catches

Boats

Plenty of school mackerel and reasonable numbers of small Spanish mackerel have been widespread offshore. Depth doesn’t seem to matter too much at the moment. Looking out for bait schools and working birds while watching the sounder, then casting stickbaits has been the way to go. Trollers have not got the same numbers, but they have picked up the bigger Spaniards when using using deep-diving lures and small skirts. A few Samsonfish have been taken from the lumps, while King George whiting have also been targeted – in 15m-plus straight out from Bunbury, and 10-15m depths further north. Squid have also been in reasonable numbers and while sizes have been modest, depths around 5m have yielded a good feed. Locals are hoping for a repeat of last year’s excellent run of big cuttlefish which coincided with the salmon run. The cuttlefish were so prolific that catches often outnumbered squid four-to-one and they were active in a range of depths, from the shore out to 30m. Crews after mixed bags of bread-and-butter species have been fishing in 5m or so either side of Bunbury and with the help of burley have picked up herring, sand whiting, flathead and skippy. In the Leschenault Estuary those trolling small metals and diving lures have picked up plenty of chopper tailor and herring along with a few decent skippy. Drop netters have continued to do well on blue swimmer crabs, but at times they have needed to move around and find fresh ground. In Geographe Bay sand whiting and King George whiting have been caught, along with plenty of squid and some chunky skippy. It's not looking too comfortable out on the boats this weekend with stronger southerly winds expected but the mainland could provide a bit of shelter if you decide to launch closer to Cape Naturaliste. Monday and Tuesday morning look best on the forecast for the coming week.

Shore-based

A word of warning for land-based fishers (as seen in the rock fishing warning under the Great Southern section above), there is expected to be some pretty gnarly swell of 3-3.5m expected throughout the South-West with a swell period of up to 16 seconds, meaning these waves will carry a lot of force and be very dangerous. Make sure you play it safe by keeping the sand between your toes if you're having a land-based fish this weekend.

The region’s glamour beaches of Preston, Myalup and Binningup turned it on for bigger fish this week with reasonable pink snapper and a couple of decent mulloway landed, mainly by drone fishers. Tailor sizes have been good as well and herring and sand whiting were plentiful. A few yellowfin whiting have been caught at Preston. At Forrest Beach, good tailor have been landed, while closer to Bunbury, Dalyellup has held hordes of herring along with a few chopper tailor and the odd flathead. Back Beach and the Bunbury Cut have held similar species, while herring and better sized tailor have been caught at Buffalo Beach. Yellowfin whiting continue to fire in the Leschenault Estuary. Vibes and surface lures have both worked well, but surface lures mainly on calmer and warmer days. Those scooping for blue swimmer crabs have been finding good numbers throughout the system, especially in the northern parts around Knapps Channel. In the Collie River bream have been sporadic and soapy mulloway have been very small, but giant herring around the 30cm mark have been caught in good numbers. A 90cm pink snapper was landed off Busselton Jetty this week and a few Samsonfish and small yellowtail kingfish have been caught at the deep end as well. Closer in on the jetty, squid and herring have been the main fare. Geographe Bay and Dunsborough have offered herring, sand whiting and yellowfin whiting. A few decent salmon were taken this week, one in Dunsborough and the other at Wyadup Rocks, and a couple more salmon and a solid tailor were landed at Hamelin Bay. There were more reports of isolated salmon catches from Yeagarup and Jasper Beach.

Big cheers to Whitey's Tackle & Camping for their top fishing tips as always! If you're in Australind or Bunbury and are keen to wet a line throughout our South-West make sure you ask their very friendly team who love their fishing for advice and stock up on gear at their store. If you're in Busselton, the 2 Oceans Tackle team are also incredibly helpful.

@dready_krueger doing the miles and getting the smiles with the old faithful Rigge 35, a great lure to use in very skinny waters after months of hot conditions.
The deeper sections of the Collie River and Wellington Dam have been holding redfin perch, while at Honeymoon Pool the skittish rainbow trout are still not playing the game, but a nice brown was taken near there this week. Harvey Dam fished well for redfin, mainly in the deeper holes, but in the early mornings they have been schooling in the shallows and were aggressively attacking spinner lures, small vibes and plastics. Force and Razor Edge plastics have been working well on them, especially the Razor Edge Bruce pattern, while Razor Edge Scout hard-bodies have also fished well.
Mandurah and surrounds
This fat and healthy yellowfin whiting was one of many solid fish landed throughout the Peel-Harvey system this past week, with surface lures working best to get the fish excited in the shallows. Photo credit: @tackle_world_miami.

Boats: Spanish mackerel continue to be sighted in good numbers around the Bouvards and other reef systems and crews that have switched to trolling rigged garfish baits rather than lures have been enjoying more success. A few tuna have been among the bycatch. Inside the Five-Fathom Bank sand whiting and skippy have been in good numbers, with decent King George whiting turning up. Squid have been caught on the weed just off Seascapes, Melros and Falcon. The Peel-Harvey Estuary has continued to fish well with plenty of blue swimmer crabs for drop netters and yellowfin whiting for those anchoring on the flats and casting vibes. Loads of herring and tailor and even the odd decent skippy were caught on the edge of the channels. Sadly, the weather gods have given us the better boating weather earlier this week and timed the choppy and windy conditions for this weekend, but early on Monday or Tuesday morning could hold brief windows.

Land-based: When the swells have been down garfish have been out in force along the local beaches, with plenty being taken on small pieces of prawn via small hooks fished under burley blobs. Good numbers of herring, sand whiting and the odd yellowfin whiting have been caught as well. Tailor have been hit or miss, but some good ones have been taken at White Hills and Silver Sands where drone fishers have also picked up small pink snapper. Sheltered beaches such as Seascapes and Melros have produced squid when conditions have been calm. The Dawesville Cut has fished well in the afternoons for herring, chopper tailor and squid, while the Mandurah bridges produced these species along with yellowfin whiting. In the Serpentine River, some very good bream have been caught on the high tide. In the Peel-Harvey Estuary scoopers have been doing better than drop netters on blue swimmer crabs at times in the estuary as the crabs have moved right into the shallows. Yellowfin whiting chasers have found the tings widespread throughout the system and have been getting lots of herring and a few tailor in their bycatch.

Thinking of wetting a line around Mandurah? These great tips were courtesy of the super friendly and helpful team at Tackle World Miami so make sure you swing by their store for the best tips and gear before your next fishing trip!

SECRET HARBOUR / PORT KENNEDY / ROCKINGHAM / SAFETY BAY / WARNBRO SOUND

Boats: A few Spanish mackerel have been taken in Cockburn Sound, which has held big numbers of tailor and a few bonito. Squid chasers have been working the deeper depths, starting at 5m, and have been targeting them successfully at Mangles Bay, Parmelia Bank and around Garden Island. King George whiting have been widespread with solid fish nudging 60cm being taking in 30m depths towards the Five-Fathom Bank and behind Garden Island, which produced some big Samsonfish along with a few yellowtail kingfish. Smaller King George whiting have been taken at Parmelia Bank and Mangles Bay, while behind Penguin Island and in Shoalwater Bay they have been mixed in with decent skippy, squid, sand whiting and flathead. Small dolphinfish have been at the FADs, while deeper out in the Rottnest Tench blue marlin have been raised and landed. The reefy passage between Carnac and Garden islands has offered shark mackerel and a few Spanish mackerel, while exposed reefs at Coventry and Garden Island have held plenty of tailor. Blue swimmer crabs have been in good numbers in Cockburn Sound. It's going to be choppy out on the water this weekend with those southerly winds but early on Monday or Tuesday cold hold more favourable boating conditions.

Land-based: Those swimming out from the Rockingham foreshore have found plenty of blue swimmer crabs in the 1.5-3m depths, while at Rockingham and Palm Beach jetties there have been heaps of scaly mackerel, along with chopper tailor and herring. These species have also been at the Ammo Jetty and Woodman points, where bonito have been caught at times. Local beaches have continued to fish well for tailor with Port Kennedy, Long Point and Secret Harbour the pick of them. A few small pink snapper have been landed by drone fishers at Secret Harbour as well. Herring and sand whiting have been caught at most beaches during the day. On warmer days flathead and yellowfin whiting have been taken at the grain terminal and the Penguin Island spit. The deeper holes at Point Peron may yield a few squid if you can find clean water.

These great fishing tips were provided by the friendly team at Compleat Angler & Camping World in Rockingham, so make sure you chat to their experienced crew in store and stock up before heading out!
Perth catches
There were a lot of fishers who caught their first metro Spanish mackerel this week, with Recfishwest's very own Ben Carlish jumping on the wagon! This species went absolutely nuts for captures from Two Rocks right down past Mandurah, so make sure you're trolling whenever you're moving around and keep an eye out for bait on the sounder.

Boats

Blue and black marlin continue to be raised and landed in the Rottnest Trench with some crews encountering five or six billfish a day. The odd striped marlin has shown up as well. At the FADs, dolphinfish over a metre have been mixed in with 70-80cm models, while at Rottnest Island’s West End small to medium-sized yellowtail kingfish have been in good numbers. Rottnest’s Parker Point has been a hotspot for Spanish mackerel, as have the waters off Mindarie. Off Ocean Reef, Mindarie, and around Stragglers, bonito have been active, while some good King George whiting have been landed at the Three-Mile Reef. Good KG’s have also been caught at Rottnest, out from Fremantle and off Cottesloe. Smaller KG’s have been mixed in with sand whiting at the Windmills. At Rowboat Reef crews chasing tailor have encountered shark mackerel. The bays of Rottnest Island have held some good squid as did the ground off South Fremantle, with the 6m depths fishing well. In the Swan River there have been fewer tailor schools sighted and the better catches have come when trolling down river from Claremont. It’s been the same with blue swimmer crabs with the deeper pockets of the river such as Mosman Bay and Blackwall Reach worth targeting. Those pesky southerly winds are going to come ripping through on Saturday with a swell of 1.5m and Sunday is looking only marginally better. Early on Monday morning might hold a better boating window, but expect white capped waves over the majority of the coming week. Hopefully the forecast is more friendly for next weekend.

Kurt Wilson @kwillo89 managed to produce some magic behind the lens as @samuel.colvin and @tommy_miller91 enjoyed the awesome fishing on offer behind the reels during @freosailingclub's Blue Marlin Classic over the weekend. The lads went 2-2-2 on blue marlin over the three days in the Perth trench. Good practice for when they head up to GAMEX in Exmouth this month!

Shore-based

Bonito have been making early morning appearances at North and South Moles. North Mole has also held a few tailor and drone fishers there have landed a few just-sized pink snapper. Herring have been plentiful at both Moles, while at South Mole an angler fishing with a burley sinker did very well on chunky skippy, herring and big tarwhine. A few small squid have been taken from the South Fremantle rock walls, with very small jigs (1.8 size) doing the trick. Fremantle Harbour has held big numbers of scaly mackerel and a few herring. A few anglers have been using fresh prawns or live bait to catch big yellowfin whiting and one or two King George whiting around the Fremantle Traffic Bridge. Yellowfin whiting around 35cm have been taken just after dark at East Fremantle on fresh prawn baits. Cottesloe has held some good tailor in the mornings, while at Floreat some bigger tailor have been among the herring schools. Beaches around Two Rocks have been weedy at times, but they have produced decent tailor and bull herring. Drone fishers in this area have landed bigger tailor, along with small to medium-sized pink snapper. In the Swan River tailor catches have slowed but fishing around structure on the outgoing tide has yielded some good fish. The best spots for just-sized choppers were Canning Bridge, Mt Henry Bridge, the drop-off near South of Perth Yacht Club, the Narrows, Claremont Jetty and Point Walter Jetty. Flathead and flounder catches have slowed in the lower reaches, while a few giant herring around 50cm have been hooked and lost in the middle sections of the Swan. Bream fishers have done best when using bait at Canning Bridge, Mt Henry Bridge and the Causeway. Smaller bream were abundant in Maylands and Guildford. Early on Sunday morning is expected to hold a moderate south-easterly wind, so you might be able to use that to your advantage if you position yourself casting northwards from the mainland. Early on Monday or Tuesday morning looks best for a land-based fish over the next windy week.

A big thanks to Anglers Fishing World in Fremantle for their great tips! These guys love their fishing just as much as we all do, so make sure you ask their super friendly team for advice and stock up before wetting a line off the land or boat!
