SWITCH YOUR FISH DURING THE OPEN DEMERSAL SEASON!
While there’s a lot of excitement about the demersal season now open in the West Coast Bioregion, what better time to mix up your catch while the pelagics are still running wild!

We’ve seen more captures of Spanish mackerel, marlin, wahoo, dolphinfish, yellowtail kingfish and many more over the past few months than ever before off the West Coast. Rather than targeting only demersals, why not consider mixing up your catch, expanding your fishing skills and knowledge and chase hard-fighting and delicious pelagics instead?

Hear from Recfishwest Operations Lead Matt Gillett on the recent amazing pelagic action and tips on how to get the most out of your demersals if you do catch one. You don't always need to bag out on demersals, especially when there’s so many other great fish to go after!
Broome catches
Muddy mania in Broome! The creeks have been loaded with some big bucks full of meat as @wadeo_clark discovered recently.

Boats

Barramundi activity has slowed around town but threadfin salmon have been taken at the Fingers and Crab Creek, although sharks have been a problem again this week. Plenty of blue-nosed salmon and a few cod have been among the bycatch and mud crabs have been in reasonable numbers. In Roebuck Bay the edge of the Deeps has yielded northern mulloway and fingermark perch, as did the lumpy ground around Black Ledge. Crews anchoring just off Gantheaume and Entrance Points have picked up a few bluebone. Crews prepared to head out very wide (85km or so straight west) have found saddletail snapper, red emperor, Rankin cod and coral trout in 70-95m. The north-easterly winds will peak around midday on Saturday but there will barely be a breath of wind on Sunday combined with a very low swell, which should be a good day to duck out when the tide allows it.

Shore-based

The 'BOOF' that this barra provided on Lake Kununurra for @good_dhu_dhu was so loud that it echoed across the lake! A solid fight with the old girl before a quick snap and release back into this pristine waterway.

Fitzroy River has been quiet on the barramundi front, but near town a few small ones have turned up in Willie Creek along with mangrove jack, while the entrance of the creek has produced good numbers of whiting. Town Beach Jetty has yielded small trevally, while Entrance Point has offered trevally, queenfish and bluebone. Small bluebone have also been caught off Gantheaume Point. Threadfin salmon and barramundi have been in reasonable numbers at Thangoo.

Big thanks to the crew from Tackle World Broome for their tips! Make sure you pay them a visit for the best gear and advice for your next fishing trip.
Exmouth catches
Probably the most delicious combo there is off Exmouth! What a spearfishing effort from @norwestadventures with a nice red emperor and a thumper of a coral trout.

Boats

Exmouth Gulf has been pretty murky, but it has still been producing the odd coral trout and a few cod. School mackerel have been prolific on the Shoals, while the eastern side of the Gulf has produced good topwater action for queenfish and golden trevally. At the islands, surface fishing has been good with lots of activity and tuna the main catch. A few cobia have been at the Muirons, while near Sunday Island spangled emperor, red-throat emperor and blue-line emperor have been taken. West of the Muirons saw goldband snapper, Rankin cod and coral trout picked up in 65-80m, while goldband have been in bigger numbers further out as well. South of Tantabiddi this week a crew picked up an 8.5kg Rankin cod and a 7.5kg red emperor, but found sharks a problem so it pays to move spots frequently even if the fishing is decent. The odd Spanish mackerel has been around inshore, while spangled emperor catches in the lagoons have slowed. Billfish activity out west has been mainly inshore with sailfish and black marlin up to 100kg raised in good numbers. The FADs have offered dolphinfish and a few wahoo. It’s mostly light southerly winds across both days this weekend with a 1.1-1.4m swell. The Gulf should be the most sheltered, but overall conditions are looking good for the boaties.

Shore-based

Exmouth Gulf is renowned for providing some of the best fly fishing opportunities in the world. This cracker of a permit put up a mighty fight in the shallows for @brody.sutton this week.

Queenfish and trevally have been prolific in Exmouth Gulf, with most beaches producing. Whiting activity has slowed but Bundegi and Wapet Creek were the better spots. Mangrove jack have been worth targeting at the town marina, Learmonth Jetty, in Wapet Creek (where a few cod were also about), and at the Bundegi boat ramp. Barracuda and small queenfish have been hassling hardyhead schools inside the marina. Queenfish and trevally have been in good numbers on the west side with Dunes and Hunters fishing well, while Tantabiddi and Winderbandi have also produced a few along with the odd spangled emperor. Lighthouse Bay has fished well for queenfish and trevally too.

These great tips were courtesy of the friendly team at Tackle World Exmouth. Swing by their store for the best advice and gear ahead of your next trip!

Kalbarri catches
It's safe to say there was a LOT of mackies landed off Kalbarri and south of town this week! @nickihuntfishing captured this lovely Spaniard on a calmer day, with waters south of town providing better numbers.

Boats

There was some good mackerel action this week, mainly around Red Bluff with fish up to 18kg landed. A kayaker trolling 500m out from there managed to pick up three mackies in a session. Mackerel have also been taken north of town, while small bonito, yellowfin tuna and the odd cobia have been picked up on the troll as well. At Lucky Bay crews trolling at the back of the reef have done well on Spanish mackerel also. Crayfishing has been steady, while demersal fishers have had no trouble finding pink snapper either side of town, but other species have been harder to find. Both days look manageable for the boaties this weekend, but Sunday looks to be the preferred option. Early on Monday also looks great on the forecast.

Shore-based

@robbie_riches and @habib.mohseni.984 discovered that Wagoe was the way to go for land-based mackies this week, with ideal ballooning conditions making it easy to wrangle in some tasty feeds.

Balloon fishers just north of Wittecarra have been getting Spanish mackerel and they have been caught in good numbers at Wagoe as well. A regular visitor to Wagoe also picked up pink snapper and a couple of coral trout. Cliff fishers closer to town have been getting pink snapper, skippy and big tailor. Wittecarra and Red Bluff have been steady for chopper tailor and the odd dart. In the Murchison River, small chopper tailor have been about the marina along with bream and cod. Yellowfin whiting have been at the river mouth and on the other side, while blue swimmer and mud crabs have been in good numbers as well.

Shout out to Dean from Kalbarri Sports and Dive for his tips! Feel free to venture into his store to ask for advice if you're wetting a line around Kalbarri!
Geraldton catches

Boats

Waters around Dongara offered the best demersal fishing this week with good catches of pink snapper and baldchin groper reported, along with a few coral trout and dhufish. Around Geraldton, pelagic species stole the show early in the week with lots of reports of Spanish mackerel at Pensioner Bank, the north end of Drummond Cove to Coronation and at Mid Reef. Most of the mackies have been around the 8kg mark and crews trolling rigged pike, garfish or tailor baits have done better than those using lures. Small tuna have been at these locations as well and school mackerel have been swimming with the Spaniards at Pensioner Bank. Before the water turned dirty, good squid catches came from Separation Point, Pages Beach, out from the Batavia Coast Marina and off Southgates. Saturday looks a tad choppy with a 2m swell, but Sunday and Monday should hold better windows.

Shore-based

The Greenough River has been holding an abundance of species with mud crabs, bream, school-sized mulloway and giant herring active in the system. Soapy mulloway have been at the Batavia Coast Marina and good numbers of squid were inside the marina before the water got murky. Bull herring catches have been good from the marina’s platform and north along Chapman Road, while the odd tailor has been picked up on mulies there. Herring have also been caught from the town’s rock walls. The first and second points at the Greenough River mouth have offered chopper tailor around 30-35cm and a few pike and good numbers of school mulloway to 70cm have turned up as well. Weed made Southgates and Tarcoola almost unfishable this week. When the weed can be conquered at Drummond Cove decent mulloway have been caught from there up to Coronation.

Thanks to the team at Geraldton Sports Centre for their tips! They will happily provide you with great gear and the solid advice for your next fishing trip.
Lancelin catches
This is why we love the FADs and want more of them being deployed across WA! The Jurien Bay FADs have been some of the most consistent for dolphinfish over the years and Mark Lecras and his crew had an awesome time this week. These FADs will be retrieved by DPIRD before winter so get out there while they are loaded up with fish!

Boats

The pelagic fishing has been on fire with dolphnfish and wahoo caught in great numbers at the FADs. With baitfish schools passing through the 18-22m depths, this has proven the best place to troll for a Spanish mackerel. There have been several reports of longtail tuna mostly around the 26m depths. Fishers who managed to get out from Tuesday onwards for the opening of the demersal season found some red throat emperor among the usual list of bottom dwellers. Bay fishers have been having a great run with a varied list of species on offer, including some big blue spot flathead, yellowfin whiting, skippy and herring. Those howling easterly winds are expected to drop off very quickly on Saturday arvo and the conditions should be quite nice for the boats across Sunday and Monday.

Chris Hartanto ducked out with Peter Fullarton on his 4m tinny this week and they had one hell of a session to remember. This nice Spaniard came over the side, but the highlight of the day was landing a solid sailfish in 20m of water, which was the first sailfish Peter has landed locally. Now is the time to be trolling!

Shore-based

The variety has really picked up on the beach where it’s not uncommon to pick up half a dozen species in a session. Dart and yellowfin whiting have been caught along the shallows and also the gutters. Skippy, tarwhine and snapper have been found where there is some nearby reef, while tailor, herring, bronze whaler and guitar sharks have been more inclined to be along the open beaches. With the roaring easterly winds hanging around on Friday evening and Saturday morning (albeit with a bit of rain expected), ballooning is a valid option for those who don't have a drone.

Big thanks to Peter Fullarton for his tips on what's biting around Lancelin each week! If you want Peter to put you on to the fish directly, make sure you check out his Tailored Treks Tours page. Always a great time and Peter knows the best spots around Lancelin like the back of his hand.

Esperance catches

Boats

Good numbers of Samsonfish have been caught at Mondrain Island, while big nannygai, breaksea cod and yellowtail kingfish have been landed at Mackenzie Island. Sizeable queen snapper have been caught at Black Island and Dolphin Rock, while lots of King George whiting, flathead and sand whiting have been camped in the corner of Wylie Bay. In Esperance Bay big squid have been attacking jigs in 6m and bull herring and big snook have been about as well. It doesn’t look too bad over the weekend but early on Sunday should hold a brief reprieve from the stronger easterly winds. Tuesday morning at this stage looks nice on the forecast.

Shore-based

Israelite Bay has been a hotspot for big mulloway and gummy sharks, while Thomas River has held salmon and big skippy. Dunn Beach has been going well for school mulloway and salmon, while all the beaches west of town have been full of west-bound salmon schools.
Castletown Quays has produced flathead and sand whiting, while bull herring have been plentiful at Taylor Street Jetty in the afternoons. The Town Jetty has offered squid and garfish at night, while Bandy Creek Boat Harbour has held skippy and King George whiting.

Hats off to the very knowledgeable team at Southern Sports & Tackle for their tips! These guys love their fishing as well, so make sure you swing by their store for the best gear and advice before wetting a line around Esperance.

Great Southern catches
The salmon action on the south coast has been fantastic over the past fortnight and Recfishwest's Tim Grose and his son Harry had a ball on Cheynes Beach over the weekend despite the windy conditions.

Boats

King George Sound is still rather murky, especially around Middleton, but towards the islands conditions have been better with a few King George whiting on offer. At Bald and Limestone Heads bonito and tuna catches have been good, while the FADs have been producing dolphinfish. Herring, squid and sand whiting have been the main catches at Two People Bay, along with pink snapper out deeper in 18-22m. In the rare windows that boats could get out to the coral ground crews have encountered nannygai, breaksea cod and pink snapper. The same species have been taken out wide at Walpole, along with a few dhufish. Saturday arvo/evening looks decent on the forecast although Monday arvo and Tuesday could also hold boating windows.

Shore-based

Salmon have been hit and miss, but when they’ve shown up they have been in better numbers and sizes. Bremer Bay, Lowlands, Salmon Holes and Cheynes have been the most consistent spots with anglers enjoying a red-hot salmon session at Cheynes on Wednesday. Salmon have also been caught at Sand Patch, Normans, Reef Beach, Ledge Beach and Fosters. Herring have been in good numbers at all these locations and Cheynes has produced a few yellowfin whiting. Frenchman Bay has been a good spot for squid, herring and small King George whiting. The town marina has produced a few bream, along with herring, small skippy and numerous pickers. Bream fishers have been heading to the Hay River, Bremer River and up at Walpole with good success. Princess Royal Harbour has continued to produce blue swimmer crabs for scoopers, while at Denmark’s Wilson Inlet decent flathead have been caught on soft plastics. Herring and Samsonfish have been caught at McGearys Rock.

Cheers to the Trailblazers Albany crew for their fishing tips this week! Swing by their store if you're after some top gear and advice ahead of your next fishing trip. Remember, you'll also catch just as many fish off the beaches than the rocks and it is always much safer to go with this option on the south coast.

South-West catches
These tasty critters were everywhere across the weed beds off Busselton this week and the @2_oceans_tackle crew grabbed their rods and camera gear to make the most of it.

Boats

Plenty of demersals have been out there for the early-birds. Straight out from Bunbury and north and south of town as well as in Geographe Bay produced the goods. Dhufish and pink snapper have dominated catches in 70-80m off Bunbury, while on opening day a group of kayakers fished the Capes and each angler landed two solid dhufish. The odd Spanish mackerel has been seen jumping off Binningup, while small yellowtail kingfish have been active in Geographe Bay, which has fished steadily for squid and King George whiting inshore, while big King George whiting have been among the demersal bycatch off Bunbury and out from Geographe Bay. The weed banks just off the Geographe Bay Yacht club have been a good spot for squid this week. Off Bunbury, big cuttlefish have been caught on the squid grounds but also out on the dhufish lumps. Samsonfish and the odd pink snapper have also been caught on squid ground in Geographe Bay, while blue swimmer crabs have been in good numbers in the Leschenault Estuary. The key to getting a quick feed of crabs has been dropping nets at first light or in the late afternoons, with the middle of the day generally being dead. Herring and chopper tailor have been active in the estuary as well, with sizes improving on the tailor. Those strong easterlies will keep howling until Sunday arvo where they are expected to drop off quickly for a glass off until Tuesday morning.

Shore-based

This 80.5cm, 3.25kg monster of a flathead was spotted cruising the shallows while @river__king_ was out fishing for salmon near Bunbury, don't think he'll be breaking this record for a while!

Most of the beaches from Preston down to Forrest have been fishing steadily for tailor, while at Dalyellup herring have been thick. Northern visitors have shown up as well with a longtom caught at Bunbury’s Back Beach and small dart popping up at Preston. The Bunbury Cut has produced herring and a few chopper tailor and the odd cuttlefish has been landed there. Yellowfin whiting action has slowed in the Leschenault Estuary and scooping for blue swimmer crabs has become a bit harder, but those wading at Australind in low light have found a few. The Collie River has been full of very small soapy mulloway and the giant herring there have not been much bigger. At the Busselton Jetty herring, squid and the odd tailor have been caught, while decent bream have been caught at Wonnerup. Tailor have been caught at Yallingup and the odd salmon has been reported there as well. Salmon catches have also been reported from Injidup, Canal Rocks and Hamelin Bay but just the odd stray fish, not schooling salmon.

Big cheers to Whitey's Tackle & Camping for their top fishing tips as always! If you're in Australind or Bunbury and are keen to wet a line throughout our South-West make sure you ask their very friendly team who love their fishing for advice and stock up on gear at their store. If you're in Busselton, the 2 Oceans Tackle team are also incredibly helpful.

Most freshwater anglers are waiting for more rain to raise the dam levels and get streams flowing, but diehards have been targeting the deeper sections of the Collie River, Wellington Dam and Harvey Dam for redfin perch where small to medium-sized models have been about. In the Collie River hordes of small trout have been breaking the surface at Honeymoon Pool, but their refusal to take baits, flies or lures has been frustrating fishers for weeks. It won't be long until they become aggressive so patience is a virtue there!
Mandurah and surrounds

Boats: Dhufish chasers have done well straight out from Dawesville on the 30m lumps at the Whales Tail and in 50m on the more prominent ground on the southern bank. Other demersal species have been harder to find, although there should be plenty of pink snapper on the Five-Fathom Bank, mixed in with skippy and Samsonfish. On the 30m contour out that way some good tuna have been smashing bait balls. Crews chasing blue swimmer crabs have had to put in a bit more effort with signs they are moving closer to the ocean entrances of the Peel-Harvey Estuary. The estuary has continued to fish well for chopper tailor, big herring and juvenile salmon and some good skippy have been showing up as well. Saturday arvo right through until Wednesday morning should hold glassy conditions out on the water.

Tackle World Miami owner Ash Ramm had some time off once the demersal season opened and managed this lovely dhuie on the Oceans Legacy jig!

Land-based: Mulloway have started to make an appearance on the northern beaches with some good fish around the metre mark taken from Silver Sands headed north, and a nice model was landed from the rocks at the ocean end of the Dawesville Cut as well. Tailor fishing has been consistent either side of town with White Hills, Seascapes, Silver Sands and San Remo among the better spots. Reports of pink snapper have come from the southern beaches. Fishers at the Mandurah bridges and at the Dawesville Cut have had to deal with unfavourable tides and a softer than usual bite in the late afternoons, but they have caught a few herring and chopper tailor. Bream have been active in the canals and marinas and some of the hooked small bream and juvenile pink snapper there have been bitten in half with big tailor, mulloway or even a stray Samsonfish the likely culprits. For those wading the flats yellowfin whiting have been smallish and weren’t in as bigger numbers, but scoop netting for blue swimmer crabs has continued to be worthwhile.

Thinking of wetting a line around Mandurah? These great tips were courtesy of the super friendly and helpful team at Tackle World Miami so make sure you swing by their store for the best tips and gear before your next fishing trip!

SECRET HARBOUR / PORT KENNEDY / ROCKINGHAM / SAFETY BAY / WARNBRO SOUND

Boats: Early-birds did well on dhufish when the demersal season opened on Tuesday with the 40m depths towards the Five-Fathom Bank and behind Garden Island the pick of the spots. Big King George whiting, baldchin groper and breaksea cod featured in the bycatch, more so in the 30m depths. At the FADs, dolphinfish and the odd wahoo have been about. On Parmelia Bank, off Penguin Island and inside of Garden Island both sand and King George whiting have been mixed together and squid have been active in 5-6m depths. Blue swimmer crab numbers have been down a little in Cockburn Sound, but the inshore waters have fished well for tailor and skippy. At the Garden Island causeway skippy to 45cm have been landed, while Shoalwater Bay has produced herring and garfish. Saturday arvo through to Wednesday morning looks great for the boaties on the forecast.

A solid yellowtail kingfish for @mg_chatstar off Rockingham! This species grows remarkably fast and reaches the legal size of 60cm within around two years. A great species to target around the inshore reefs which also taste great.

Land-based: Long Point, Port Kennedy and Secret Harbour have been consistent for tailor, but numbers have dipped slightly. Thankfully the sizes have been good, with quite a few fish around the 50cm mark. Long Point has also produced some chunky skippy, while herring and whiting have been caught at most beaches. Herring, garfish and scaly mackerel have been in good numbers at Woodman Point, the Ammo Jetty and the Rockingham and Palm Beach jetties, while chopper tailor have shown up at times around sunset. On Thursday, herring schools near the grain terminal were being smashed by what was suspected to be tailor or bonito. Some nice flathead have been landed on vibes at Woodman Point. Sand whiting have been the main catch at the Penguin Island spit, while divers have had to stay out a bit longer to pick up their bag limit of five blue swimmer crabs. The best land-based squid spots this week have been Point Peron and the Penguin Island Jetty.

These great fishing tips were provided by the friendly team at Compleat Angler & Camping World in Rockingham, so make sure you chat to their experienced crew in store and stock up before heading out!
Perth catches
Aurora Philpin @rorz___ was absolutely chuffed with this nice dhuie on the spear off Perth which will provide a delicious feed for a lot of happy dinner guests! Remember, there is pelagic action going off better than metro fishers have seen in living memory right now and a big dhufish like this could feed a lot of people, so reconsider trying to reach your bag limits when one is more than enough.

Boats

On Tuesday good demersal catches came from both sides of Rottnest Island, off Ocean Reef and out from Two Rocks. Crews drifting did well on averaged-sized pink snapper and dhufish with baldchin groper, big breaksea cod and solid King George whiting among the bycatch. Catches tended to come in waves with the 40-50m depths producing best, while those in 80m on the south side off Rottnest were often frustrated by sharks. It pays to move spots frequently even if the fishing is good before the taxman turns up. At the FADs, dolphinfish and small tuna were the main catches. Billfish activity has been a little quieter in the Rottnest Trench, while Spanish mackerel have been caught off Rottnest’s West End in 20-30m and along the Three-Mile Reef. A few yellowtail kingfish have been swimming with the mackies around Three-Mile. Inshore from Fremantle herring, tailor, skippy and tarwhine have been active, with big tailor coming from Mewstones, while the Windmills has held its usual mix of sand whiting and King George whiting. Both whiting species have been caught south-west of Rottnest and in northern inshore waters. City Beach has held good numbers of sand whiting in 10-15m. Squid fishing has been good out from Fremantle with smaller ones closer in and bigger models in 5-8m. In the Swan River, trollers have been picking up tailor around the 35cm mark in the middle reaches, especially around Applecross and Point Walter, while the deeper pockets of the Swan have continued to produce blue swimmer crabs. Sunday arvo through to Tuesday arvo should see the calmer conditions off Perth return, with the howling easterlies lingering around until around midday on Sunday.

Not a bad result for an early pre-work send out in the boat for @corrie.fish this week! The Spaniards are still going nuts for boats trolling along steep drop offs near inshore reefs such as Five Fathom and Three Mile. Try trolling deep diving lures or ganged gardies at 4-6 knots and keep an eye out for bait on the sounder, you'll be in with a shot!

Shore-based

Although weed has been a problem at times the deep gutters at Cottesloe have been producing solid tailor. Tailor have also come from the north metro beaches and at City Beach, which has held lots of herring. The northern beaches have produced a few pink snapper and the odd Samsonfish for drone fishers, while a nice pinkie was landed around Sorrento late last week. Squid have been at the Fremantle Moles with North Mole fishing better. Herring have been in good numbers at both Moles and garfish have been about too, but getting past the herring has been a challenge. On Tuesday a nice pink snapper was picked up off the Coogee rock wall, which has also held herring and small skippy. The rock walls south of the Moles have offered herring, small squid and the odd cuttlefish. In Fremantle Harbour scaly mackerel have been thick during the day. Squid have made their way into the Swan River with some good ones caught near the traffic bridges and at the Bicton Baths. Night-time yellowfin whiting chasers have been getting a few around East Fremantle, while late afternoons have been best for tailor at Point Walter Jetty, Point Resolution and Applecross. Flathead have been picked up in twos and threes in the deeper sections of the lower Swan with vibes and micro jigs fishing best, while the odd one has been caught on soft plastics in the upper reaches. Bream fishers have been doing better fishing under lights after dark, with Canning Bridge, Windan Bridge, Redcliffe Bridge and Garratt Road Bridge producing a few. The odd soapy mulloway has been caught also. The conditions for ballooning look great until around midday on Sunday with these roaring easterly winds, so if you don’t have a drone we recommend giving this a crack if you want to target demersals or even a rogue Spanish mackie offshore.

A big thanks to Anglers Fishing World in Fremantle for their great tips! These guys love their fishing just as much as we all do, so make sure you ask their super friendly team for advice and stock up before wetting a line off the land or boat!
