Our condolences to this baitfish that got slammed by this sailfish. A group of sailfish can pick apart a large school very quickly by stunning them with their bills before gathering an easy feed.

Broome catches
An absolute beauty of a black snapper landed by @jessemasitto off Broome this week!

Boats

Roebuck Bay produced plenty of action this week with schools of sailfish around the 15kg mark smashing trolled garfish baits out from Barred Creek and Spanish mackerel were widespread. The bay’s 10-20m depths yielded plenty of bluebone and spangled emperor with coral trout, blue-lined emperor and Spanish flag in 20m-plus. Big mulloway have been hanging around the lumps, with Black Ledge producing some good ones and, while sharky, the edge of the Deeps has produced, cod, northern mulloway and fingermark. The creeks around town have been fairly quiet, but some good threadfin salmon were caught at the Fingers this week. There is some lovely boating weather arriving from this Saturday evening over the next week so enjoy yourself if you’re offshore.

Shore-based

The best creek fishing near town has been at Dampier Creek where mangrove jack and the odd small barramundi have been landed. At Quandong, spangled emperor, bluebone and trevally have been caught, while Gantheume Point has been worth a crack for Spanish mackerel and queenfish. The Town Beach Jetty has offered bream, small queenfish and trevally, while Entrance Point has produced bigger queenfish and trevally. Barramundi to a metre have been caught on live baits in the Fitzroy River at the Cuttings and Telegraph pool.

Big thanks to the crew from Tackle World Broome for their tips! Make sure you pay them a visit for the best gear and advice for your next fishing trip.
Exmouth catches
Winter reds are in and @katsbigadventure made the most of it off the Pilbara coast this week, with more red emperor turning up for fishers on the west side of Exmouth this week as well.

Boats

Conditions have been far from ideal with strong easterlies and lumpy swells a challenge at most locations. A few afternoon weather windows have enabled crews to troll the back of the reef on the west side for the odd Spanish mackerel, while the lagoons have thrown up spangled emperor and a couple of golden trevally. Bigger boats found small weather windows out deeper and picked up a few goldband snapper. Getting to the Muirons has been a challenge as well, but a couple of crews staying over have managed to find golden trevally and the odd Spanish mackerel, with Rankin cod and coral trout on the bottom. In Exmouth Gulf the easterlies have kept crews very close to shore where squid have been in reasonable numbers when clear water can be found. A few anglers based on the east side of the Gulf have been casting flies and lures for giant and golden trevally, permit, queenfish and spangled emperor. Other than the rain lurking around this week, the weather for the boaties should see pretty flat water, but Monday onwards will see the swell spike a bit. The next few mornings look best on the forecast over the coming days.

An absolute horse of a mangrove jack for skilled fisher @junior_grassy, with this beast going 65cm!

Shore-based

With the roaring easterlies the west side has been the most fishable. Around the lighthouse and at Mildura Wreck golden trevally, spangled emperor and the odd bluebone have been landed, while golden trevally, spangled emperor and queenfish have been the main catches at Tantabiddi and Winderbandi. In Exmouth Gulf conditions have been wild around Learmonth Jetty, but the stirred-up water often brings in big queenfish, giant trevally and northern mulloway. In the town marina the odd small coral trout and spangled emperor has been keeping company with the marina’s regular residents, trevally, mangrove jack and bream. A few squid have been caught from the marina’s oceanside rock wall.

These great tips were courtesy of the friendly team at Tackle World Exmouth. Swing by their store for the best advice and gear ahead of your next trip!

Big swell headed our way from Monday to Thursday next week between Cape Naturaliste and Exmouth!

Now that winter has arrived and rougher weather is set to stay, Recfishwest will not be sharing weather alerts from the Bureau of Meteorology from 1 June until 31 August, meaning this will be our last heads up until at least October.

That means it is up to fishers to put their safety first over winter - so keep the sand between your toes over the coming months when fishing off the coast.

The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a heads up for possible dangerous fishing conditions next week, details below:
- West to South-Westerly waves with swell heights around 3.5-4.5m will reach the coast between Cape Naturaliste and Coral Bay from late Monday night into Tuesday morning, with swell periods of 14-16 seconds.
- The largest swell will be about Kalbarri, with swell heights up to 5m on Tuesday morning.
- Increased swell heights extend further from Exmouth to Cape Naturaliste on Tuesday afternoon, and persist with heights around 3-4m until Tuesday evening.
- From Wednesday swell decreases below 3m, starting about Coral Bay.

Keeping safe comes down to better decision-making from improved alerts, communication, and awareness. No fish is worth risking your life for. If you know anyone planning to fish in these regions during this time, make sure you share this warning with them.

In the meantime, make sure you download the Bureau of Meteorology's app to keep track of forecasts and warnings in real-time, even when out of range.

For tips on how to stay safe while fishing, visit our website: https://recfishwest.org.au/our-services/safefishing/

Kalbarri catches

Boats

Most of the Spanish mackerel action has been out in front of town, where quite a few have been seen jumping, and towards the south, while demersal fishers have found plenty of pink snapper at the Sand Patch. Crews fishing along the cliffs have landed pink snapper and a few Rankin cod, while those fishing out wider to the south-west have caught goldspot trevally, pink snapper and dhufish. Conditions look good for the boaties this weekend albeit for some rain but the swell and wind takes a spike from Monday.

Shore-based

Shore fishers have not been missing out on the mackie action either with drone fishers and ballooners landing good Spaniards at Red Bluff and Pot Alley, and there have been plenty down at Wagoe too. The cliffs and Wagoe have also produced good pink snapper, just make sure you wear a lifejacket here and don’t even consider these spots from Monday to Thursday next week given the big swell warning. Wittecarra, Red Bluff and the river mouth have fished well for tailor and a few dart have been caught at Wittecarra. In the Murchison River chopper tailor and some better fish to 50cm have been caught up past the marina jetty, while bream around 30cm and cod have been in good numbers. Giant herring have been landed up river, while blue swimmer crabs and mud crabs have been marching upstream as far as Castle Rock.

Shout out to Dean from Kalbarri Sports and Dive for his tips! Feel free to venture into his store to ask for advice if you're wetting a line around Kalbarri!
Geraldton catches
@mat.svenson swapped his usual run of impressive pelagics off Geraldton for a solid dhufish on the yak this week.

Boats

Crews have managed to get out in the afternoons when the breeze has dropped and most have had no trouble landing pink snapper from the lumps on South-Western Bank and out from Drummond Cove. Dhufish have been harder to find, but towards African Reef they have been caught in 30-40m. When the water has been clear dinghy fishers got on to nice squid of Pages Beach, while out at Mid Reef a few Spanish mackerel have been active. On the north end of Pensioner Bank crews fishing at night have picked up good pink snapper and a few big mulloway. Saturday and Sunday look manageable, but next week will see big swells and winds return.

Shore-based

Weed has made beach fishing hard going, but at Coronation Beach mulloway around the metre mark have been landed, while at Greenough’s first and second points the odd tailor and reasonable pike have been caught. In town, the back of the Lives has yielded small tailor and quite a few school whiting, while the eastern breakwater has held a good mix of sand snapper, small tailor, pike, skippy, juvenile pink snapper and the odd cod. In the Chapman River mulloway to 60cm have been caught on soft plastics and a few bream around 35cm have been landed as well. The Greenough River has offered decent bream and a good number of giant herring have been hooked. At night, the inside of the Batavia Coast Marina has held big schools of very small arrow squid and a few bigger calamari squid.

Thanks to the team at Geraldton Sports Centre for their tips! They will happily provide you with great gear and the solid advice for your next fishing trip.
Lancelin catches

Boats

It was all seasons in one week, from rain and swell to beautiful, calm, sunny days and back again. At this stage Saturday and Sunday look to be a window before the nasty weather returns again from Monday for the foreseeable future. Boats that managed to get out mid week were finding tuna schools on the trip out and back to the demersal grounds. Sharks have been a problem, so make sure you move spots immediately if this occurs. Water clarity has been outstanding for the divers and the swell has flushed out the bay with some clean offshore water moving into the winter pattern of clear water, making it great for lure casting to a multitude of fish species and squid.

Shore-based

Beach fishers have been onto some cracking mulloway along with the odd tailor, tarwhine or skippy. Sand whiting have been an excellent average size. The safest bet to get a line out next week will be the town jetty where tailor, skippy, squid and herring have been caught mainly in the evenings. The last swell saw mulloway at the jetty, so it is well worth a try if you can't get a line out off the beach.

Big thanks to Peter Fullarton for his tips on what's biting around Lancelin each week! If you want Peter to put you on to the fish directly, make sure you check out his Tailored Treks Tours page. Always a great time and Peter knows the best spots around Lancelin like the back of his hand.

Esperance catches
A lovely kingie from @gidos_fishing_adventures who has been fishing pretty hard over the past few weeks and uploaded some cracking videos on to his YouTube channel

Boats

There have been good numbers of nannygai and yellowtail kingfish out wide at Waterwitch, while Samsonfish to 30kg have been landed at Mondrain Island. Good mixed bags of demersal species have come from Leg of Lamb and Douglas Patch, while a few tuna have been kicking around at the back of Cull Island. Nice blue groper have been caught at Charley Island, while West Beach and Twilight Cove have held lots of sand whiting. King George whiting have been fishing well at Flat Rocks, while big squid have been caught in Esperance Bay, which is a timely reminder that the Chase The Kraken competition kicks off on June 1 with big prizes up for grabs. See the Southern Sports and Tackle Facebook page for details. Both Saturday and Sunday evening look nice on the forecast for the boaties.

Shore-based

After a few days of big swells nice gutters have formed at beaches east of town with Thomas River and Poison Creek producing big skippy, gummy sharks and mulloway, while skippy over 5kg have been caught at Tagon Beach. Alexander Bay and Dunn Beach have held big schools of salmon, while sand whiting, flathead and tarwhine have been plentiful at Stockyards. Gummy sharks and salmon have been landed at 14-Mile and Roses Beaches, while there has been a hot early-morning bite on salmon at Fourth Beach. The Town Jetty and Taylor Street Jetty have held squid, herring and garfish in the late afternoons and after dark, while Bandy Creek Boat Harbour has yielded King George whiting and skippy. The lakes around town have produced bream to 40cm.

Hats off to the very knowledgeable team at Southern Sports & Tackle for their tips! These guys love their fishing as well, so make sure you swing by their store for the best gear and advice before wetting a line around Esperance.

Great Southern catches

Boats

The weather has limited fishing this past week. Most fishing has been limited to King George Sound where squid have been in good numbers and sizes. Limestone Head and Frenchman Bay have been among the better spots. Keeping company with the squid have been respectable King George whiting. A few bonito and tuna have been kicking around the islands. Between Sunday and Tuesday doesn’t look too bad on the forecast but Sunday looks best.

Shore-based

The beaches have been really carved up by the recent cold fronts, which has ruled out most salmon fishing. The beach at Salmon Holes and the corner of Cheynes which has held big herring could be worth a shot, but most other regular spots have been out of action. Salmon numbers have dwindled a lot, even when conditions were fair, but locals are hoping for their return run to begin soon. Sheltered bays have held big numbers of herring and tarwhine and the odd flathead have been caught as well. The town marina has offered squid, herring and small skippy, while Princess Royal Harbour has surprised many this late in the year by rewarding scoop netters with good feeds of blue swimmer crabs. The beach at Emu Point has been eroded and the area looks tricky to fish, but with only modest rainfall the King and Kalgan rivers, and also the Hay River, should be worth a crack for bream. Frenchman Bay has produced big squid at times, along with herring and small King George whiting. King George whiting have also been active in the inlet at Walpole.

Cheers to the Trailblazers Albany crew for their fishing tips this week! Swing by their store if you're after some top gear and advice ahead of your next fishing trip. Remember, you'll also catch just as many fish off the beaches than the rocks and it is always much safer to go with this option on the south coast.

South-West catches
@whiteystackleandcamping have their Salmon Showdown very nearly coming to an end, with the last chance to get your entries in this Saturday before midnight. They will announce winners this coming Wednesday on 4 June. Don’t forget to put your entries in and tight lines!

Boats

Crews on both sides of Bunbury have been doing very well on pink snapper, starting from about 5m. There have been quite a few good dhufish and King George whiting about as well, mostly in 12-20m. In the deeper depths pink snapper numbers have tapered off. Welcome bycatches have included baldchin groper, harlequin and breaksea cod. Big cuttlefish have been active and very aggressive, even homing in on hooked dhufish as they are brought to the boat. Squid fishing has been reasonable in 2-5m. In the Leschenault Estuary blue swimmer crabs have dropped off and herring and chopper tailor catches have slowed as well. Geographe Bay has produced good numbers of squid and King George whiting have been in reasonable numbers. Kayak fishers in the bay have got on to squid in 2m depths with Shimano Sephia jigs in purple and avocado working well. Yak fishers have also found squid further out in 4-5m where they have been keeping company with KGs, while on the west side they have been pulling up small dhufish. Bigger boats in Geographe Bay and out west have been getting larger dhufish, along with breaksea cod and pink snapper. Sunday is by far the best day over the next week to duck out.

Shore-based

Pink snapper have been the main target for shore fishers and they have delivered in spades, all the way from Preston Beach down to Peppermint Grove. They are so thick they have been caught at the wrong spots at the wrong times, but look for dirty water to give yourself the best shot. A fresh half or whole herring has seen many a big pinkie this week. As well as better known spots like Buffalo Beach, Belvedere Beach, Preston Beach and Myalup, pink snapper have also been landed at the Bunbury Cut, Back Beach and Dalyellup. Most beaches have held lots of herring, but tailor numbers have dropped off. With the weekend cold front mulloway could be mixed in with the pink snapper. As well as holding lots of squid and herring, Busselton Jetty also produced a couple of solid pinkies this week. The odd salmon has been caught at Point Picquet and Bunker Bay, mainly on live baits, while pink snapper have been taken either side of Dunsborough. Dhufish and harlequin have been landed at Yallingup.

Big cheers to Whitey's Tackle & Camping for their top fishing tips as always! If you're in Australind or Bunbury and are keen to wet a line throughout our South-West make sure you ask their very friendly team who love their fishing for advice and stock up on gear at their store. If you're in Busselton, the 2 Oceans Tackle team are also incredibly helpful.

@freshwest_ was back on the prowl for trout in our picturesque South-West this week and recent rain has spiced up the action, with this lovely rainbow trout hitting the net before a gentle release.
The latest rain front should further improve the sizes and numbers of redfin perch, which have been in better numbers and improving sizes at Harvey Dam, Wellington Dam, in the river at Collie and at Glen Mervyn Dam. The rain should also get the streams flowing with the nutrients carried by the current likely to make trout more active, with some good captures reported near the faster flowing rapids.
Mandurah and surrounds

Boats: Pink snapper continued to be taken in good numbers in close, but many crews fishing further out on the Five-Fathom Bank have missed out, instead having to settle for some solid skippy. Out from Dawesville pink snapper and dhufish have been in close as well, but both species have also been taken in 30-40m towards the Bouvards. King George whiting and baldchin groper have been the main bycatch. Out in 50m a few decent tuna have been landed. At most locations the water has been a bit too murky for good squidding, but in the Peel-Harvey Estuary the area in town near the war memorial has produced a few. It’s been much harder for drop netters to get a feed of blue swimmer crabs in the estuary, but tailor and big herring have been plentiful in the dirty water just past the drop-offs. Juvenile salmon and skippy have been a bit harder to find, but they have fired up on certain days. Sunday’s forecast is your best bet if ducking out in the boat.

Land-based: Good pink snapper have been caught either side of town and catches should only get better with the weekend rain front. White Hills has produced some good ones, along with mulloway around a metre and tailor to 55cm. Pink snapper have also been caught at the rock walls in town, at the ocean end of the Dawesville Cut and from beaches north of Silver Sands. Most beaches have held plenty of herring which have been the pink snapper bait of choice, although live baits have accounted for a few as well. In the Peel-Harvey Estuary blue swimmer crabs have been active in the shallows, but with the cold front arriving this weekend it could be their last hurrah and the same goes for those throwing surface lures at yellowfin whiting on the flats. The canals and marinas in the estuary have produced some decent bream, while the Dawesville Cut has held herring and chopper tailor, as did the town bridges, especially under the lights after dark.

Thinking of wetting a line around Mandurah? These great tips were courtesy of the super friendly and helpful team at Tackle World Miami so make sure you swing by their store for the best tips and gear before your next fishing trip!

SECRET HARBOUR / PORT KENNEDY / ROCKINGHAM / SAFETY BAY / WARNBRO SOUND

Boats: Plenty of pink snapper have been landed at their usual inshore haunts with jet ski fishers and kayakers getting a feed as well. The inside of Garden Island, the Garden Island causeway, the D9, Sulphur Rock, the Sisters, off Woodman Point, off the grain terminal and the ASI groyne have been just some of the spots. Very close in crews have had to work a bit harder with quite a few fish being just undersize. Anchoring and using burley has been the best method on the pinkies with the bonus of bringing in some sizeable skippy. Dhufish have been happy to hang close this week as well with some good ones being caught around Garden Island and towards the Five-Fathom Bank in as little as 6-8m. Dhufish have also been active in 40-70m and among the bycatch have been big King George whiting, baldchin groper and breaksea cod. If clean water can be found squid have been in good numbers from 2m, while sand whiting have been abundant. These species and smaller King George whiting, along with herring, skippy and the odd tailor have been caught in Mangles Bay, off Woodman Point, near Garden Island, on Parmelia Bank, behind Penguin Island and in Warnbro and Cockburn Sounds. Sunday’s forecast looks best for the boaties.

Land-based: Pink snapper catches have been good from the shore with Woodman Point, Long Point and Secret Harbour all producing. An 80cm pinkie was landed off the Rockingham Jetty this week, which has also held herring and scaly mackerel, along with mulloway to a metre. Herring, scaly mackerel and whiting baits have worked well on the pink snapper. Tailor numbers have declined from the beaches but most of those caught at Secret Harbour, Long Point, Warnbro and Port Kennedy have been around the 50cm mark. Woodman Point, the Palm Beach Jetty and the Ammo Jetty have yielded mainly herring and scaly mackerel.

These great fishing tips were provided by the friendly team at Compleat Angler & Camping World in Rockingham, so make sure you chat to their experienced crew in store and stock up before heading out!
Perth catches
It just shows that persistence can pay off at the Hillarys Marina rockwall, with this chunky Sambo landed by @daniel.dimech.9 this week!

Boats

A very special thankyou and farewell to the amazing crew at Anglers Fishing World, who are sadly closing their doors after decades of dedication in helping West Aussie fishers with the best gear and tips. They have also provided us with brimming fishing reports for the metro section during that time and we wish them nothing but the best in their future endeavours. Make sure you pay Marco, Tony and the rest of the team a visit to their store and help them out by purchasing some of the gear! All the best fellas and we hope you can squeeze in some fishing in the future.

Crews fishing inshore have been enjoying a great run of pink snapper which have been caught from Fremantle, out from Ocean Reef, at the Three-Mile Reef, off Two Rocks and in 10-12m off Hillarys, where jet ski fishers have been doing well. Big King George whiting have been caught off Two Rocks and in the bays at Rottnest Island which have been full of herring and squid. Before the water got murky, spearfishers were getting the odd Spanish mackerel around Rottnest, while the island’s West End has produced yellowtail kingfish and south of the island saw sizeable yellowfin tuna landed. A couple of Spanish mackerel were also seen jumping off Hillarys. Tailor and herring have been the main catches at Stragglers, while Fremantle’s inshore waters have offered squid, sand whiting, King George whiting and slimy mackerel. The best squidding has been in 5-6m. Dhufish in modest sizes have been taken south of Rottnest along with some respectable baldchin groper. Behind the Windmills, where there has been a mix of sand whiting and King George whiting, the 30m depths have yielded big sand whiting and also pink snapper and Samsonfish, while off Cottesloe decent sand whiting have been caught in 7-9m. Sunday is by far the best day over the next week and looks to be the only comfortable option, with storms, wind and swell expected on all other days.

After having a ball fishing up in WA's north, @saltfix is back in Perth enjoying the little things, by catching not so little skippy not far offshore.

Shore-based

Pink snapper chasers have been out in force at the metro rock walls this week and many have been rewarded, with good fish coming from Coogee, North Mole, Hillarys, Mindarie and Two Rocks, as well as from the northern beaches, where fishers have tangled with herring, tailor and skippy when the weed hasn’t been too bad. Further north a couple of good mulloway hit the sand.  North Mole has also produced squid, herring, tailor, slimy mackerel and a few skippy, while Hillarys Marina has offered herring and the odd slimy mackerel. A couple of big King George whiting were caught at North Mole this week, along with a thumping 70cm bluespot flathead. Fremantle Harbour has held herring, and yellowtail. With the river starting to get flushed out it could be worth a crack for mulloway, with the inside of North Mole another good option. The rock walls in South Fremantle have held small squid, yellowtail, herring and a few big cuttlefish. Herring and good sand whiting have been caught at Cottesloe and Grant Street. In the lower Swan River a few small tailor have been kicking around, while there have been whispers of sizeable mulloway from the deeper sections such as Mosman Bay and Blackwall Reach. School mulloway and one or two better ones have been landed around Rivervale and Belmont. The best time to target mulloway is when the wind is down as a stronger breeze tends to break up the bait schools of poddy mullet, bony herring and hardyheads the mulloway have been feeding on. With the decent rain it could also be worth targeting mulloway at the old Swan Brewery, Canning Bridge or the Narrows Bridge, which has been holding some reasonable tailor. Bream fishers have been doing best in the Swan from Optus Stadium up to Maylands. Sunday’s forecast looks best for land-based fishing.

A big thanks to Anglers Fishing World in Fremantle for their great tips! These guys love their fishing just as much as we all do, so make sure you ask their super friendly team for advice and stock up before wetting a line off the land or boat!
