CARNAR-FIN 2025 HIGHLIGHTS!

Carnarvon’s recent Carnar-Fin Fishing Competition has gone down as one of the biggest turnouts for the cherished Gascoyne event since its inception in 1992!

As seen in this great footage kindly shared to us by Andrew Robertson from @gascoynemedia, more than 220 anglers in 70 boats hit the waters of Carnarvon to battle with top quality species, with Recfishwest also lending a hand at the kids fishing clinic on the fascine that was packed with 130 excited youngsters.

This family-friendly, week-long celebration of fishing is a favourite on Carnarvon's social calendar and brings people from across WA together, long may it continue!

Broome catches
Mackie Monday went off for @reefchiefaustralia up in Broome with a fantastic dry season afternoon providing the goods.

Boats

Crews fishing in 30m have enjoyed success on northern mulloway, fingermark perch, blue-lined emperor, bluebone and big Spanish flag. A good sailfish was landed off Barn Hill and smaller ones have been in reasonable numbers 25km or so west of town. In Roebuck Bay fingermark perch, cod and northern mulloway have been taken from Black Ledge and the edge of the Deeps. Tripletail have been found lurking around the moorings. The Fingers has fished better than the town creeks, offering a few decent threadfin salmon, with Dampier and Crab Creeks being reliable for a feed of mud crabs. Bluebone and spangled emperor have been caught close in off Entrance and Gantheaume Points. The afternoons and evenings should see the lowest easterly winds this week, so that would be the best boating window if the tides allow decent launches and retrievals.

Shore-based

Permit have been caught in good numbers from the flats in front of Willie Creek, which has also produced a couple of small barramundi. The Town Beach Jetty has held its usual fare of bream, small trevally and queenfish. Entrance Point has been consistent for bigger trevally, queenfish and bluebone. Big bluebone and queenfish are a chance at Gantheaume Point. In the Fitzroy River rain and falling water temperatures have shut down most barramundi activity.

Big thanks to the crew from Tackle World Broome for their tips! Make sure you pay them a visit for the best gear and advice for your next fishing trip.
Exmouth catches
Even by @onstrikecharters mighty standards this is a big longtail tuna from Exmouth Gulf this week!

Boats

Dirty water has slowed the fishing in Exmouth Gulf, but the west side of the Cape has been going well. Sailfish have been caught in good numbers from 150m and Spanish mackerel have been active off Tantabiddi and at Helby Bank. Spangled emperor and Chinaman cod are rewarding crews targeting the lagoons, while the 15-60m depths have offered Rankin cod, coral trout and a few red emperor. Goldband snapper have been in good numbers in 80-90m and the 100m depths have yielded saddletail snapper, pearl perch and Robinson sea bream. At the back of the Muirons, Spanish mackerel and golden trevally have been in good numbers, while red emperor and Rankin cod have been active with a few coral trout in shallower depths. In the Gulf, spangled emperor and blue-lined emperor have been the main catches at the Shoals and Spanish mackerel have turned up at times. Despite the dirty water squid fishing has been consistent. Blue swimmer crabs have been taken at the bottom of the Gulf, while mud crabs have been more widespread with Learmonth serving as a good starting point. Thankfully conditions on both the western and Gulf side of Exmouth look better this coming week on the forecast for the boats, so it should see more comfortable fishing.

Shore-based

@antsimper and his youngster had a cracking session of fishing in our North-West recently, with this solid cod accompanying other great captures including some very nice red emperor, coral trout and giant herring.

In the Exmouth Gulf the town marina has produced some good squid from the ocean rock wall, along with sizeable queenfish and the odd giant trevally. Inside the marina saw bream, small, cod, trevally, queenfish and mangrove jack landed. The rocks at the industrial area have also provided a few squid. The Bundegi flats have produced nice queenfish and giant trevally as well as squid and mangrove jack at night. Learmonth has offered mainly bream and the odd queenfish, but it should get better as the water clears. Whiting fishing on the flats has been difficult, but that too should spice up this week. Wapet Creek fished well for whiting and also produced some decent bream. From VLF Bay to the north, spangled emperor and bluebone have been in reasonable numbers with unweighted squid and crab baits accounting for some good fish, especially near Mildura Wreck. Golden trevally have also turned up at times. At Tantabiddi and Winderabandi squid baits weighted with a small running sinker have worked well on spangled emperor in the lagoons.

These great tips were courtesy of the friendly team at Tackle World Exmouth. Swing by their store for the best advice and gear ahead of your next trip!

Kalbarri catches

Boats

Spanish mackerel have been active off Red Bluff and along the cliffs around Pot Alley, with trolling around 4-5 knots working best. Trolling ganged garfish baits has worked but they have also been attacking deeper diving lures such as Halco Laser Pros that can get down a few metres. Demersal fishers have been finding plenty of baldchin groper in decent sizes, but the pink snapper have been quieter and most of them were picked up on the drift. Dinghy fishers in Lucky Bay have been getting on to Spanish mackerel as well, providing a great adrenaline rush. Conditions are looking inviting for the boaties from today right through until at least Tuesday morning at this stage.

Shore-based

Drone fishers have been hooking and landing Spanish mackerel at Red Bluff, where a good-sized northern bluefin tuna was also landed. Sizeable tailor and just-sized pink snapper have been the main catches from the cliffs, but make sure you wear a lifejacket at all times here. Morning tailor have rewarded fishers at Red Bluff and Wittecarra, while herring and small tailor with the odd 50cm model mixed in have been active at the mouth of the Murchison River. After the next cold front storm garfish should start to show up around Red Bluff and Jakes Bay. Mud crab catches have been decent up river from the marina jetty and a few blue swimmer crabs have been about closer to the river mouth. Cod to 50cm and decent bream have been caught between the marina and Castle Rock, with the odd mangrove jack also seen lurking in structure. The river has also held a lot of tailor around the 35cm mark.

Shout out to Dean from Kalbarri Sports and Dive for his tips! Feel free to venture into his store to ask for advice if you're wetting a line around Kalbarri!
Geraldton catches
Another week, another yak mack for @mat.svenson on the troll close to town!

Boats

Dhufish have been active either side of town with most crews escaping the offshore wind by staying close to the coast. Waters south to Greenough have produced mainly small dhufish, while north to Coronation Beach have offered bigger dhufish, good baldchin groper and lots of pink snapper. A few longtail tuna have been kicking about north of town, but it has been too weedy to troll so looking for baitfish schools and bust-ups was the key to success. Just north of Dongara, crews have landed plenty of small pink snapper, while a couple of locals had a good afternoon session there and picked up respectable dhufish, a few small coral trout and a sizeable groper. The wind looks favourable until Tuesday although the swell is undulating between 2-3m, so be wary of this if ducking out.

Shore-based

Weed has been diabolical and has ruled out beach fishing for most of the week. Bream to 35cm have been caught in the Greenough River, while smaller bream have been found in the Chapman River. Dongara has offered better opportunities, with the marina producing a mix of skippy and their northern trevally cousins to 40cm, as well as quite a few pike. The south wall has produced bigger skippy and it has also yielded a few decent pink snapper.

Thanks to the team at Geraldton Sports Centre for their tips! They will happily provide you with great gear and the solid advice for your next fishing trip.
Lancelin catches
Peter Fullarton landed his first solid greenback tailor for the winter season this week on the trusty Halco Roosta popper! Catch all this action in his latest YouTube video by clicking here

Boats

With there being only a few windows that allowed for the beach launch this past week, the boat-based fishing has been limited. Those braving the conditions were able to catch dhufish and snapper. Smaller boats and kayaks fishing in the bay caught plenty of squid around the weed banks. With the coming week looking like the last, the boaties will need to look for a lull in the swell to be able to manage the beach launch and get out for a fish.

Shore-based

The beaches close to town have been struck by areas of thick weed as a result of the storms. There have been some clearer patches of beach reported north of town where the water has been cleaner which allowed for some fishing. Tailor, mulloway and pinkies have been caught off the beach this past week. The storms have helped form some gutters that should provide good opportunities for fishing this coming week. Be aware that some of the beaches are narrow and steep because of the weather, so four-wheel driving can be hairy due to the soft sand. Large winter greenback tailor have been present in the reef breaks and gutters and there is nice sized whiting being caught along the beaches, providing a tasty feed.

Big thanks to Peter Fullarton for his tips on what's biting around Lancelin each week! If you want Peter to put you on to the fish directly, make sure you check out his Tailored Treks Tours page. Always a great time and Peter knows the best spots around Lancelin like the back of his hand.

Esperance catches
If you're wanting to go toe to toe with some of WA's biggest skippy then Esperance is the place, with Southern Sports & Tackle's @olistevensonn enjoying fatherhood with a mix of fishing recently.

Boats

Nannygai to 65cm along with a few yellowtail kingfish have been caught at Boxer Island, while big Samsonfish have been landed at Sandy Hook Island. Charley and Cull Islands have yielded sizeable harlequin, while big fat sand whiting have been caught off Chapman Point. King George whiting have been taken at Lovers Cove, as well as big squid in Esperance Bay. The squid have been smaller at Cook Rocks, but far more prolific than in the bay. The forecast for this week doesn’t look amazing, but Saturday might be manageable for the boats. Monday and Tuesday may offer another weather window to duck out.

Shore-based

Thomas River has produced gummy sharks, mulloway and skippy, while Dunns Beach held big salmon. Sizeable salmon schools have been spotted cruising past Roses Beach, while the corner of Warrenup Beach has produced gummy sharks. Near town, Fourth Beach has been the best bet for salmon, while King George whiting have been in good numbers at the town foreshore. Bandy Creek Boat Harbour has been going well for bream and King George whiting, while Town and Taylor Street jetties have offered squid and herring. Woody Lake has been the best location for bream.

Hats off to the very knowledgeable team at Southern Sports & Tackle for their tips! These guys love their fishing as well, so make sure you swing by their store for the best gear and advice before wetting a line around Esperance.

Great Southern catches
John Dory are certainly up there as one of the most striking looking (and tastiest) fish to rumble with off the South Coast and catching them via jigging on the @oceans_legacy Hybrid series has been a great tactic for bringing these stunning fish aboard.

Boats

King George Sound has been firing for squid and sizes have been very good. Yellow and white jigs have worked well and the 8-12m depths were the most productive. King George whiting were in good numbers as well with crews catching them at Quaranup, Frenchman Bay and Brambles. Excellent conditions last week allowed crews to target the coral ground where pink snapper, dhufish and breaksea cod were in good numbers. A bit further out, nannygai were plentiful. Hartmans Beach was a pink snapper hotspot, while Cheynes fired for pink snapper and dhufish. Saturday and Monday morning may provide good enough weather to head out on the boat this week in a 2m swell.

Shore-based

Emu Point has held lots of herring and small skippy. The town marina has also produced these species along with some nice bream and squid. Better squid fishing has been at Frenchman Bay and around Whaleworld, with these locations holding lots of herring as well as King George whiting. Gull Rock held herring, small skippy and tarwhine, which have also been in plague proportions at Denmark’s Ocean Beach. Herring and skippy have been in good numbers at Bluff Creek and Cheynes. The beach at Salmon Holes has produced herring as well, but there have been no reports of salmon from any of the beaches. Bream fishing has been steady in the King and Kalgan rivers, but the standout location this week was the Hay River, where bream to 40cm have been smashing lures.

Cheers to the Trailblazers Albany crew for their fishing tips this week! Swing by their store if you're after some top gear and advice ahead of your next fishing trip. Remember, you'll also catch just as many fish off the beaches than the rocks and it is always much safer to go with this option on the south coast.

South-West catches
@tommy_miller91 was having a slow day out on the water with his pal off Bunbury before the jigging spiced up, with a nice yellowtail kingfish and dhufish hitting the deck.

Boats

Crews have continued to do well on pink snapper with plenty about in as little as 5m. Dhufish chasers haven’t had to go too far out either, with plenty of good ones swimming with the snapper schools at night and first light. Samsonfish have been caught on the lumps, while the burley trails bringing in pink snapper have also produced solid skippy. Lots of yellowtail and slimy mackerel have been about as well, which has been good news for bait gatherers. With bait schools plentiful, tuna have made a welcome appearance with many taken on small skirted lures and stickbaits. Squid have been in reasonable numbers off Busselton and Bunbury, with big cuttlefish prolific in deeper waters. Small King George whiting, herring and skippy have been caught in Geographe Bay, along with the odd pink snapper. A few diehards have been getting blue swimmer crabs in the Leschenault Inlet where they have been most active at first and last light. Saturday morning and Sunday afternoon should offer a good window to take the boat out this weekend.

Shore-based

The Busso Jetty was once again a pinkie hotspot, with @oskar._.sw reeling in this nice 80cm+ specimen this week.

Pink snapper catches have been less consistent this past week with a few being picked up at Preston and Myalup Beach, Buffalo and Belvedere. Some good tailor have been kicking around, along with heaps of herring and the odd mulloway. Dallyellup and the Bunbury Cut have held mainly herring and the odd chopper tailor, while Back Beach has held plenty of herring as well as chopper tailor. The Collie River has held bream in the lower reaches, while Busselton Jetty has also produced a few pink snapper and the odd mulloway. Pink snapper catches have been good for both casters and drone fishers around Dunsborough.

Big cheers to Whitey's Tackle & Camping for their top fishing tips as always! If you're in Australind or Bunbury and are keen to wet a line throughout our South-West make sure you ask their very friendly team who love their fishing for advice and stock up on gear at their store. If you're in Busselton, the 2 Oceans Tackle team are also incredibly helpful.

Both brown and rainbow trout are becoming more active and visible in the freshwater systems thanks to the recent rains and putting in the distance to the more remote areas has been the most productive tactic for kayak and land-based anglers.
Improved stream flow has led to much better trout fishing with browns and rainbows being caught in Harvey Dam and Logue Brook Dam. Those willing to walk a fair way away from the hustle and bustle of towns into more remote areas have fared best, with plenty of trout over 40cm spotted lurking in shallows. Decent rainbows have been caught all around the Pemberton region and Lefroy Brook. Good perch around the 40cm mark have been taken at Harvey Dam, Drakesbrook Weir and in the Collie River near the townsite.
Mandurah and surrounds

Boats: Offshore conditions were ideal this week with good catches of pink snapper, dhufish, breaksea cod and baldchin groper in depths ranging from 20-50m out from Dawesville. These fish were also caught at the Bouvards, on the Five-Fathom Bank and beyond, with plenty of skippy also showing up in the burley trails on the Five. Tuna have turned up in good numbers with crews trolling for them successfully between demersal grounds. Keeping an eye on the sounder (especially from the 20m-50m contour lines) and looking for bait balls helped crews find them. In the Peel-Harvey Estuary blue swimmer crabs have been caught closer to the ocean outlets, while herring, tailor and skippy have been in good numbers in the channels and drop-offs. Clearer patches in the estuary have also yielded a few squid. Both Saturday and Monday morning look best for a fish this week.

Land-based: In the lead-up to the full moon tailor fishing was good on beaches both sides of town and herring were plentiful. The odd-school-sized mulloway also turned up. Pink snapper catches were good as well with White Hills, the ocean end of the Dawesville Cut and the Mandurah rock walls producing good fish for drone fishers and casters. Herring have been at the Cut, along with chopper tailor at night and it’s been a similar story at the Mandurah bridges. Bream fishing has improved greatly in local rivers with a couple of big fish in the high 40cm range landed in the Murray.

Thinking of wetting a line around Mandurah? These great tips were courtesy of the super friendly and helpful team at Tackle World Miami so make sure you swing by their store for the best tips and gear before your next fishing trip!

SECRET HARBOUR / PORT KENNEDY / ROCKINGHAM / SAFETY BAY / WARNBRO SOUND

Boats: Pink snapper fishing has been good in 10-15m depths, with juvenile fish showing up in the burley trails before the bigger models arrive. Garden Island has been one of the standout locations but towards the Five-Fathom Bank, along the Garden Island causeway and out from the grain terminal have fished well too. Big skippy have been showing up as well, with a 50cm model landed in Cockburn Sound. Night-time pink snapper chasers have also been picking up mulloway around the metre mark from the close-in lumps and at the shipping channel. A few dhufish have been landed on the lumps close in as well, usually at night, but better catches have come from 50-60m behind Garden Island and towards the Five-Fathom Bank. Big King George whiting have been among the bycatch. Cockburn and Warnbro sounds have offered sand whiting, a few medium-sized King George whiting, tailor, herring, slimy mackerel and snook. Squid fishing has been a bit harder this week because of poor water clarity but when clear patches were found, Mangles Bay, Woodman Point and ground behind Penguin Island offered a few, along with reasonable numbers of sand whiting. The weather on Saturday morning looks good for a fish.

Land-based: Local beaches have been fishing well for pink snapper, droners have taken the lion’s share but casters have got a few as well. Secret Harbour Long Point and Port Kennedy have all produced pinks. Getting a feed of herring has been easy at most local beaches and the odd school-sized mulloway has been caught by pink snapper chasers. Squid fishers did well at Woodman Point, which has also held plenty of herring, when the water was clear. The Ammo and Palm Beach jetties have offered herring and slimy mackerel. Rockingham Jetty has held these species and also quite a few mulloway up to 1.2m, with six landed on a bumper night early in the week.

These great fishing tips were provided by the friendly team at Compleat Angler & Camping World in Rockingham, so make sure you chat to their experienced crew in store and stock up before heading out!
Perth catches
Epic sunset, epic snap, epic snapper! Neil Maxted was tickled pink with his first snapper caught on soft plastics - a Zman 7 inch jerk shad in the old faithful coconut ice colour. He was fishing with his nephew, Jake Rotham of TallTails podcast fame, out of Hillary's on the Three Mile when the schnapper schtruck!

Boats

There has been no shortage of pink snapper for inshore fishers with depths from as little as 6m producing plagues of fish. Most are on the smaller size, however larger models up to 80cm have been mixed in. Some very big skippy have been keeping them company with a 64cm monster taken in 11m off Hillarys. Decent King George whiting have been a common bycatch for pink snapper chasers at Stragglers, Three-Mile Reef, Hillarys, Mindarie and Two Rocks. North metro inshore waters have seen dhufish and the odd breaksea cod caught in 12m of water. However, fishers south of the river have been getting dhufish and baldchin groper in their traditional 40-50m depths around Rottnest and Carnac Island. Squid fishing has been quieter than usual this week due to the dirty water. Big Samsonfish and yellowtail kingfish have been landed off Two Rocks and Rottnest’s West End. The bays at Rottnest have held sand whiting, King George whiting, squid, skippy and a few pink snapper. Fremantle’s inshore waters have produced tailor, herring, sand whiting, snook and slimy mackerel, while the Windmills has offered small King George whiting and sand whiting. Saturday morning should offer the best window for boat fishers in the metro area this weekend, before next week goes back to windy and choppy.

DPIRD has advised to avoid fishing or crabbing near Dunkley Reserve (Alfred Cove) and Fremantle Sailing Club due to recent sewage overflows into the river. Burst waste pipes in Spearwood and Hamilton Hill over the weekend caused the spill, and authorities are advising people to stay clear of the affected areas in the river for now.

We’re disappointed at how long it took for Water Corporation to inform us of this serious incident — and at the lack of clear, timely info provided to the fishing community. Water Corp has since apologised and blamed poor communication between Government agencies for the delay — but frankly, that’s not good enough when public health and our waterways are at risk

We've requested further information and clear maps showing the affected areas from agencies, but as of Friday afternoon, we were still yet to have received anything. We will make sure we share any updates on our channels once we are informed.

The Swan River is a treasured urban fishing haven – incidents should not occur like this in the first place. But if and when they do – timely, accurate info shared with fishers must be a priority as a bare minimum.

Shore-based

Fremantle’s North Mole has been absolutely packed this week as hopeful anglers tried their luck in the hope of landing a pink snapper. Most missed out with only two or three landed each session among the hundred or so people fishing. During the day at North Mole saw herring, garfish, slimy mackerel, skippy, snook and a few squid. South Mole offered mainly herring, skippy and a couple of juvenile Samsonfish, while Fremantle Harbour produced herring, yellowtail and slimy mackerel. The South Fremantle rock walls threw up a few juvenile Samsonfish, as well as herring, skippy, tarwhine and the odd squid. Hillarys, Mindarie, Two Rocks and Ocean Reef were other rock walls that produced pink snapper, as did the northern beaches, where drone fishers picked up a couple of small dhufish and the odd mulloway. The northern beaches have also been fishing well for herring and tailor in the 35-40cm range with the odd one up to 60cm thrown in. A baitcast garfish on ganged hooks has long been a proven way to catch big tailor. A couple of anglers throwing poppers around South Beach have also had big hits they believed to be large tailor, while reefy areas around Cottesloe often produce big tailor this time of year. Floreat and City beaches have offered mainly herring and a few small tailor, skippy and sand whiting. In the lower reaches of the Swan River a few tailor, small mulloway and bream have been kicking about, but see the above article for areas to avoid due to the sewage spillages. Better mulloway have been caught around Canning Bridge and in the Belmont and Bayswater areas. The Causeway to Maylands stretch of river has fished well for flathead which seem to have fired up after the recent rains. This has also made bream much less widespread as they gather in schools to move down river. Mt Henry Bridge in the Canning River, Canning Bridge, the Causeway, Optus Stadium, Garratt Road Bridge, Maylands and Bayswater should all be worth a try for bream chasers. Saturday morning may work for some looking to take advantage of the easterlies off the beaches. From that point forwards a sheltered place or somewhere where the westerly is at your back may work in the Swan River.

A big thanks to Compleat Angler Nedlands for their great tips! These guys are all avid fishers, know the best spots for every particular species and have provided great support to Recfishwest and metro fishers for many years. Make sure you ask their super friendly team for advice at their store just off Stirling Highway and stock up before wetting a line off the land or boat!
