Fishing Upgrades Coming!
Recfishwest has welcomed two major infrastructure investments that will significantly improve access for the metro fishing community.
The State Government has announced plans to upgrade ageing infrastructure at the Woodman Point Recreational Boating Precinct, alongside the construction of a brand-new T-head Ammo Jetty set to be ready for fishers by summer 2027.
Together, the projects represent a major investment into one of the State’s most heavily used recreational fishing and boating locations and will improve safety, accessibility and fishing experiences for thousands of West Aussies.
Major boat ramp upgrades
As part of a $4.8 million marine infrastructure package, the ageing four-lane timber ramps on the western side of the Woodman Point boating precinct will be replaced with modern floating jetties, making launching safer and easier. Read more here.
New Ammo Jetty a great win for metro land-based fishers
Key features of the redevelopment include a 50-metre-long, three-metre-wide T-head that will more than double fishing space in deeper water, improved separation between divers and anglers through a widened main deck and upgraded access to the water via a dedicated ramp and low-level platform. @barrawhisperer scored himself this beautiful barra with the river all to himself.
When weather windows opened sailfish were landed offshore between Willie Creek and Barred Creek on teasers and rigged garfish baits. Off Gantheaume Point and Barred Creek Spanish mackerel, longtail tuna and mack-tuna have been in good numbers, while bluebone and coral trout have been landed on the inshore lumps. Threadfin salmon have been hit and miss at the Fingers but there have been some good sessions, while Crab Creek has produced a few barramundi.
Shore-Based
The cold snap has shut down most barramundi activity in the Fitzroy River but a few old hands that know the moon phases have picked up a few at their usual haunts. In town unfavourable winds have made fishing Town Beach Jetty a challenge with most people heading to the rocks at Entrance and Gantheaume points to target queenfish and trevally. Whiting chasers have found a few at Town and Cable beaches, while good reports of threadfin salmon have come from Eighty Mile Beach.Big thanks to the crew from Tackle World Broome for their tips! Make sure you pay them a visit for the best gear and advice for your next fishing trip.
@bomberfarrellfishing with the bombshell of a banger!
Late afternoons offered relief from the northerly winds on the west side last weekend with trolled garfish baits accounting for good Spanish mackerel in as little as 10m off Tantabiddi. Tantabiddi has also produced good numbers of spangled emperor closer in, but squid catches there have been hit and miss. Further out and towards the Muirons, bigger boats have been getting goldband snapper and red emperor, while black marlin have been picked up by crews trolling in 100m or so. Water clarity has improved in Exmouth Gulf, especially in the eastern and southern areas. Deep in the gulf, crews on the flats have been targeting giant herring but have had more luck with golden trevally. Larger patches of clearer water on the town side of the gulf have led to improved squid fishing close in, while King Reef has been going okay for Spanish mackerel, blue-lined emperor and the odd coral trout.
Mildura Wreck has been fishing well for spangled emperor, small giant trevally and gold spot trevally with stickbaits and soft plastics working well, while a giant trevally around 10kg was caught on bait at Dunes Beach. Spangled emperor have been caught from the shore at Tantabiddi and the town marina has produced bluebone, small trevally, cod, bream and queenfish. Learmonth Jetty remains closed, but the beach and rocks are now accessible and with the gulf clearing up, bream, whiting and squid catches could improve from the shore and school mackerel, queenfish and trevally are always a chance if bait schools are about.
These great tips were courtesy of the friendly team at Tackle World Exmouth. Swing by their store for advice and gear ahead of your next trip!
Big yellowfin tuna and sizeable Spanish mackerel have been caught on both sides of town with the south side fishing a tad better. Both species have been hitting trolled baits and hard-bodied lures. In the bays around Red Bluff squid and fat sand whiting have been caught.
Ballooning has been going really well off Wagoe, with plenty of Spanish mackerel landed along with some unwelcome north-west blowies. Good numbers of pink snapper have also been caught. The cliffs near town have offered pink snapper as well, along with a few baldchin groper and some big tailor. The Murchison River mouth has produced a few decent whiting, while in the river bream and school sized mulloway have been active, along with a few small mangrove jack. Blue swimmer crabs have also entered the system.Shout out to Kalbarri Sports and Dive for their tips! Feel free to venture into the store and ask for advice if you're wetting a line around Kalbarri.
Paddle power! @mat.svenson with this magic mid-west mackerel.
Squid have been going well off St Georges with sizes pretty good. Pelagic action has picked up too with trollers finding Spanish mackerel in good numbers despite floating weed being a challenge, with macks in the 11-18kg range caught from African Reef up to Coronation. The macks have been taking baits but lures have worked well too, especially Halco Laser Pros in traditional colours such as Red Head, Mullie and King Brown.
Mulloway fishing has been good despite it being a challenge to find weed-free locations. The fish have ranged in size from 60cm to 1.3m and the better spots have been north of Drummond, West Bank, south of Greenough and at Lucys, but none of these has fired every day. Tailor have been more patchy but those who have waded out on to the reefs at Separation Point, Flat Rocks and Drummond have been doing better, landing fish up to 60cm. Pike have been active at Greenough’s first and second points, in the bays at Drummond Cove and at Explosives but weed has been an issue at times. Whiting have been in good sizes with some fish pushing past 35cm. Drummond Cove and Southgates have been the better locations when weed-free for whiting, while smaller ones have been caught behind the Lives. Drone fishers have been doing well on pink snapper and the odd dhufish around Drummond Cove and south of Greenough. The Batavia coast Marina has held a few squid, while the odd samsonfish has been landed at night by mulloway chasers between Dongara and Geraldton. Down at Dongara yellowtail up to 30cm have been thick in the marina.
Thanks to the team at Geraldton Sports Centre for their tips! They will happily provide you with great gear and solid advice for your next fishing trip.
Adrian out with @TailoredTreks tussled with this tailor after a long and slow morning of soaking baits.
Boats
At this stage, Saturday is shaping up as the best weather window before some pretty nasty conditions roll through Sunday. Boaties who managed to sneak out midweek were rewarded with schools of tuna working around the 30-metre line, providing plenty of excitement. Inside the bay, things have well and truly taken on that classic winter look, with crystal clear water making for sensational sight fishing conditions. Lure casters have been enjoying some great sessions on a variety of species, while squid numbers continue to impress and have become one of the most reliable options. There have even been some quality blue swimmer crabs finding their way into the drop nets, adding a tasty bonus for those soaking a few nets while they fish. As always, pick your weather windows carefully and stay safe if heading out there’s no fish is worth getting cleaned up over.
Beach fishers have been enjoying some cracking sessions, with solid mulloway and pink snapper coming off the sand for those putting in the time around the change of light. The wash zones have also been producing some absolute ripper greenback tailor for lure casters, with a few fish big enough to get the heart racing and the drag singing. Sand whiting continue to impress with an excellent average size. Looking ahead, with a decent swell expected, the safest and most consistent option to get a line out will likely be the town jetty. Evening sessions have been producing tailor, skippy, squid and herring, and it should continue to fish well. While the rough weather rolls through, there’s always a chance of a pinky off the jetty too.
Big thanks to Peter Fullarton for his tips on what's biting around Lancelin each week! If you want Peter to put you on to the fish directly, make sure you check out his Tailored Treks Tours page. Peter knows the best spots around Lancelin like the back of his hand.
Big blue groper have been landed at Leg of Lamb, while yellowtail kingfish to 15kg have been caught towards Mackenzies and nannygai have been thick out wide. Tuna have been going well at Charley and Cull islands, while squid have been plentiful at Cook Rocks. West Beach has been going well for sand whiting, while Esperance Bay has yielded herring, squid and snook.
Mulloway and lots of salmon have been caught at Thomas River, while big gummy sharks have been landed at Dunns Beach. Sizeable skippy and gummy sharks have ben caught at Stockyards, while 14-Mile and Roses beaches have held mulloway and salmon. The afternoons have fished well for salmon at Fourth and Salmon beaches, while nice King George whiting and flathead have been caught along the town foreshore. Lovers Cove has held good numbers of skippy, herring and King George whiting, while the Town and Taylor Street jetties have offered squid, herring and garfish from evening onwards. Bream and King George whiting have been caught in Bandy Creek Boat Harbour, while the port viewing area has offered big snook.
Hats off to the very knowledgeable team at Southern Sports & Tackle for their tips! These guys love their fishing as well, so make sure you swing by their store for the best gear and advice before wetting a line around Esperance.
@andrew_ward_3 with another successful squid session. Some for the plate and some for bait.
Boats that made the most of the calm conditions to get out to the coral ground last weekend didn’t do as well as they may have expected with the fishing quite slow. A few queen snapper and breaksea cod were caught in close, while further out on the coral pink snapper and nannygai were taken but not in great numbers. Crews trolling around the heads picked up a few small tuna but salmon were quiet. Squid were the most receptive species this week and most anglers targeted them in King George Sound at the weekend and found sizes and numbers to be good. Herring, sand whiting and small King George whiting were also active.
Before the cold front salmon catches were good at Nanarup, Shelley Beach, Muttonbird Beach, Little Beach, Salmon Holes, Cheynes and Bremer Bay. Most beaches have been thick with herring and skippy being landed as well. Peaceful Bay also produced salmon and herring and the odd pink snapper was landed. In Frenchman Bay squiding was good before the blow and herring and small King George whiting were also caught. Cooler temperatures seem to have shut down blue swimmer crabs in the Princess Royal and Oyster harbours. The Denmark, King and Kalgan rivers have produced bream in good numbers with bigger models landed in the Kalgan along with a few mulloway. Some very big bream nudging 50cm have been taken by those in the know in the less fished systems on the south coast. When the water has been clear Emu Point fished okay for squid, herring and bream were about as well. Bream were also caught at the town marina along with herring, leatherjacket and small skippy, with the odd squid landed at night.
Cheers to the Trailblazers Albany crew for their fishing tips this week! Swing by their store if you're after some top gear and advice ahead of your next fishing trip. Remember, Trailblazers Albany have loan lifejackets available if you wish to fish off the rocks, but keeping the sand between your toes is always a safer option.
@corren.wakelam with this sambo, that took the tinnie for a twirl!
The good run of King George whiting has continued with 50cm-plus fish being caught just north of Bunbury and further out towards the Bouvards. One or two samsonfish have been on the lumps and in close herring and skippy have been active. Crews trolling off Buffalo Beach have picked up the odd salmon. Geographe Bay has fished well for herring, snook, smaller King George whiting and sambos.
Pink snapper were widespread either side of Bunbury for drone fishers over the past week but the midweek cold front allowed casters to get a bigger piece of the action. Salmon have been taken in ones and twos at Busselton Jetty, which also produced a couple pink snapper during the blow. Squid and herring have also been caught there in calmer conditions. Beaches either side of Bunbury have held plenty of herring and some solid winter tailor. Most beaches from Preston to Dunsborough have held salmon in ones and twos and they have also been caught at Dalyellup and the Bunbury Cut. Smiths Beach has gone well for salmon and Bunker Bay, Eagle Bay and Castle Rock have been holding a few. Salmon went quiet at Hamelin Bay last week, but catches have since picked up. Beaches there and at Deepdene, Cosy Corner and Skippy Rock have also offered tarwhine, skippy, herring and sand whiting. Salmon catches have been steady at Yeagarup also. In the Collie River, bream and soapy mulloway have been in reasonable numbers.
Big cheers to Whitey's Tackle & Camping for their top fishing tips as always! If you're in Australind or Bunbury and are keen to wet a line throughout our South-West make sure you ask their very friendly team who love their fishing for advice and stock up on gear at their store. If you're in Busselton, the 2 Oceans Tackle team are also incredibly helpful.
Ridiculously good reddie caught by young gun @harry.fisho.
Redfin perch catches have been good in the Collie River, near Wellington Dam and also around Collie itself. Wellington Dam has held a few and Harvey Dam has being firing for kayak anglers working soft plastics in 4-5m, while smaller ones have been caught from the shore at Harvey Dam on worms. Most of the reddies have been small but Harvey Dam and the Collie River have produced some over 45cm. A few nice brown trout have been caught in the Donnelly River on fly and one or two rainbow trout have turned up in the Preston River.
The KGs have been the go-to for many, with no expensive gear needed and super easy to fillet, as Alex customer of @tackleworldmiami found out!
King George whiting have been in good numbers on the 25-30m line at Five-Fathom Bank and out from Dawesville with plenty of 50cm-plus fish being landed. Vexed Micro Meats adorned with small pieces of octopus have been working well. Inside the Five and at James Service Reef in 12-15m, sand whiting have been going well, while plenty of skippy have been on the inshore lumps for those throwing in a bit of burley, with Samsonfish often crashing the party. Squid have been in good numbers off Seacapes and Falcon. Before the blow, tuna were being picked up out wide on the 30-40m contours. The Peel-Harvey Estuary has been thick with herring with chopper tailor mixed in and while there have been no crazy bag-outs big blue swimmer crabs have been about.
Pink snapper have been landed down at White Hills and also at Seascapes and Silver Sands. A couple were taken from the Dawesville Cut and the town rock walls after the cold front hit. The Cut has also produced herring and a few chopper tailor and good numbers of squid. The rock walls in town and at San Remo have also fired for squid. The Murray River has been fishing better than the estuary marinas for bream and soapy mulloway. Local beaches have offered plenty of herring and mulloway catches have improved north of town towards Madora Bay.
Thinking of wetting a line around Mandurah? These great tips were courtesy of the super friendly and helpful team at Tackle World Miami so make sure you swing by their store for the best tips and gear before your next fishing trip!
Inshore waters really fired over the past week. Big King George whiting were landed behind Carnac and Garden island and squid, a little on the smallish side, have been in big numbers throughout Cockburn Sound. Crews trolling behind Garden Island, Carnac Island and the Sisters have been having a ball, picking up salmon, small tuna, 40-70cm yellowtail kingfish and solid tailor. Staff at Compleat Angler Rockingham have reported Yakamito Slim Minnows have been working a treat on these species. Skippy and herring have been plentiful right in close, along with a few sand whiting, while out in the deeper parts of the sound big mulloway have been landed at night.
Before the blow, drone fishers were getting the lion’s share of pink snapper from the shore but casters have started to get their share. Port Kennedy and Secret Harbour have fished well for pinks, while mulloway up to 1.4m have been landed at Golden Bay and also from Rockingham Jetty with live baits working well. Herring have been thick on the beaches and tailor seem to be in two size ranges, just legal or 50cm plus. Port Kennedy has been producing salmon in small numbers, while scaly mackerel were in big numbers at Palm Beach Jetty this week. Fishers also reported plenty of garfish before the weather turned nasty. The local jetties and Point Peron have also offered herring and a few squid.
These great fishing tips were provided by the friendly team at Compleat Angler & Camping World in Rockingham, so make sure you chat to their experienced crew in store and stock up before heading out!
@josh.stillitano nailing the swan for this chromey mulloway.
The late autumn run of squid has been one of the best in recent memory with plenty of bag-outs achieved. South Fremantle and Rottnest have been hotspots, but waters off Cottesloe and Hillarys have also produced. Fremantle’s inshore waters have yielded skippy, herring and sand whiting, while Mewstones and Stragglers have failed to fire for salmon but tailor, herring and skippy have been in good numbers. North metro inshore waters have offered a mix of sand whiting, skippy and King George whiting. Before the winter front hit yellowtail kingfish were in good numbers at the Fish Towers, keeping company with small tuna.
North metro beaches continued to fish well for tailor to 60cm, while herring were around in good numbers and droners picked up pink snapper and the odd dhufish. When the midweek cold front hit casters picked up pinks from the northern rock walls which had been fishing well for herring, small chopper tailor and the odd mulloway. Surprisingly the Fremantle moles were quiet on the pink snapper front and in the lead-up to the blow the previously good squid, herring and skippy catches of last week declined. Rock walls along Mews Road did produce a few squid though. A few salmon have been mixed in with tailor between Fremantle and Trigg, with Trigg also producing herring, tarwhine and the odd flathead. Around structure in the Swan River’s lower reaches samsonfish have been landed, and lure casters have found decent tailor from the drop-offs in the middle reaches, with the wall near the old brewery firing when bait schools have been about. Mulloway chasers have picked up good tailor at night on baits, and just the odd flathead has been landed in the middle and lower Swan. The rain may entice bream to move further down to the Causeway, Narrows, Mt Henry and Canning bridges but for the past week they’ve been content to hang around Maylands and Ascot. This area has also offered a few school mulloway.
A big thanks to Compleat Angler Nedlands for their great metro tips! These guys are all avid fishers, know the best spots for every particular species and have provided great support to Recfishwest and metro fishers for many years. Make sure you ask their super friendly team for advice at their store just off Stirling Highway and stock up before wetting a line off the land or boat!
