TackleWest Butler
Congratulations to Luke and the TackleWest crew on the opening of their new mega Butler store that features this Matrix-like lure wall – reportedly the biggest in the State! It’s been great to watch the rise of TackleWest - one of our valued business supporters – a WA independent, homegrown business under Luke’s expert watch and the efforts of his knowledgeable team. Check out the new store for all the very latest gear and a yarn with the team about all things fishing.
@ReefChiefaustralia welcomed this 120cm cobia as by catch whilst out chasing mackerel.
Crews that got out wide found plenty of coral trout, Rankin cod, Spanish flag and red emperor, while bluebone were active on the inshore bommies. Spanish mackerel have been swimming with sailfish off Willie Creek and a few macks have been in Roebuck Bay which has been thick with tuna. Fingers and Crab Creek have held threadfin salmon and loads of blue-nosed salmon and mud crabs have been active also. Tuna have been in good numbers off Barn Hill and Thangoo with casting and trolling getting the job done.
Shore-Based
Town Beach Jetty and the nearby rocks have produced queenfish and good numbers of golden trevally, while those wading out on the low tide at Entrance Point have scored on bluebone, trevally and big queenfish. Spanish mackerel have been active at the mouth of Barred Creek, which has held queenfish and trevally. Macks should be worth targeting at James Price Point. Whiting fishers have done well at the Town Beach, Coconut Wells and Cable Beach, while Barn Hill and Thangoo have offered bluebone. A few threadfin salmon have come from Eighty Mile Beach. The Fitzroy River has been hit and miss for barramundi, mainly around Telegraph Pool and Langi Crossing.Big thanks to the crew from Tackle World Broome for their tips! Make sure you pay them a visit for the best gear and advice for your next fishing trip.
Complete cobia chaos! @allyyfrances hooked into this slab of a crab eater on jig!
A week of on-and-off drizzle has slowed things down a little but the winds have been gentle for a change. Despite the dirty water in Exmouth Gulf, squidding has been going well in the clear patches off Town Beach, while deeper in the gulf fly-fishers on the offshore flats have encountered permit. The shoals have remained quiet, but a few coral trout and blue-lined emperor have been kicking about and school mackerel have turned up at times. Fishing has been good up at the Muirons where a monster red bass around 15kg was landed on a stickbait. The islands have also produced red emperor, trout and Spanish mackerel. The west side of the cape hasn’t been too shabby either with good numbers of Spanish mackerel and cobia behind the reef, out at Helby Bank and off Tantabiddi. Deep-droppers have struggled to find goldband snapper and saddletail snapper catches have waned but the 70m mark has produced red emperor, coral trout, Robinson sea bream and pink snapper. Sailfish have been in reasonable numbers for those trolling out west with Spanish mackerel coming up as by catch.
It’s been hard going for shore fishers. The tip of the cape which had been firing for spangled emperor, golden trevally and bluebone seems to have shut down and the bays on the west side have offered little. The odd spangled emperor has been pulled from the lagoons around Tantabiddi and the national park, while the Exmouth marina has been reliable for small trevally, queenfish and mangrove jack. The gulf beaches remain murky, making it very hard to get a feed of whiting but a few good flathead have been landed.
These great tips were courtesy of the friendly team at Tackle World Exmouth. Swing by their store for advice and gear ahead of your next trip!
@wiehann_nel getting around this greenback!
During a rare weather window last weekend a crew picked up four big Spanish mackerel straight out from town, while a charter boat fishing about 40km north enjoyed a great session on baldchin groper and snapper. They also picked up plenty of crayfish but closer to town getting a feed of crays has been much harder. An angler that crossed the Murchison River landed a good mulloway at Frustrations this week.
Big swells have made tailor fishing a challenge from the beaches but pink snapper chasers have done all right, landing good fish at the river mouth and Red Bluff, while decent pinks have also been pulled up at Goats Gulch. The Murchison River has been going OK for blue swimmer and mud crabs and has also thrown up a few school mulloway. The jetties have produced bream and a few cod.Shout out to Kalbarri Sports and Dive for their tips! Feel free to venture into the store and ask for advice if you're wetting a line around Kalbarri.
@Mat.svenson proving it’s not the size of the boat the bloke has but the size of the bloke in the boat.
With the wind and rain, opportunities have been slim pickings but those managing to duck out have found a few Spanish mackerel south off town towards Dongara, along with yellowfin tuna in the 8-10kg range, while dinghy fishers have picked up squid just outside the Batavia Coast Marina. A fair bit of weed has been hanging around catching lures and baits when trolling so it’s important to check your baits are swimming properly regularly.
Murky water, weed and big swells have ruled out most beach fishing. A few school mulloway and the odd pink snapper have been taken in the reef holes south of Greenough, while bream chasers have been active in the Greenough River. The Batavia Coast Marina has produced a few squid on days when the water has been clear.
Thanks to the team at Geraldton Sports Centre for their tips! They will happily provide you with great gear and solid advice for your next fishing trip.
Boats
The swell has remained fairly consistent throughout the week, with plenty of surge on the beach making launching and retrieving boats a challenge at times. As a result, most trailer boats have stayed parked up, with only a handful of fishers braving the conditions. Those making the effort have largely been focused on checking lobster pots and grabbing a feed of squid while they're out. Squid numbers have been reasonable in the calmer, sheltered areas, providing a worthwhile option when offshore fishing opportunities have been limited. With the forecast looking more favourable later in the week, be ready to make the most of any break in the swell.
The recent storms have left their mark on many of the beaches close to town, with thick banks of weed making some stretches difficult to fish. However, anglers willing to spend a little time exploring can still find clean patches of water and productive gutters. Fishing has been somewhat patchy compared to previous weeks, although there are still enough fish around to keep persistent anglers interested. Tailor, tarwhine, herring, mulloway and the occasional pink snapper have all been reported, albeit in lower numbers than usual. The standout species continues to be whiting, with quality fish showing up consistently along much of the coastline. They have been providing reliable action and a tasty feed for those targeting them with worms, squid or small pieces of bait.
Big thanks to Peter Fullarton for his tips on what's biting around Lancelin each week! If you want Peter to put you on to the fish directly, make sure you check out his Tailored Treks Tours page. Peter knows the best spots around Lancelin like the back of his hand.
Plenty of nannygai have been landed at Figure of Eight Island, while big breaksea cod have been caught at Sandy Hook. Nice mixed bags have come from Giant Rocks and Dart Reef, while tuna have been active at Cull and Charley islands. Sand whiting have been thick in Wylie Bay, while decent King George whiting have been taken at Lovers Cove. Big squid have been abundant in Esperance Bay.
Gummy sharks, salmon and mulloway have been caught at 14-Mile Beach, while big gummy sharks have been landed at Dunns Beach. Stockyards has yielded tarwhine, sand whiting and salmon, while salmon have been in good numbers in the afternoons at Salmon Beach. Nice King George whiting have been caught from the town foreshore, while the Town and Taylor Street jetties have offered skippy, herring and squid, day and night. Woody Lake has fished well for bream.
Hats off to the very knowledgeable team at Southern Sports & Tackle for their tips! These guys love their fishing as well, so make sure you swing by their store for the best gear and advice before wetting a line around Esperance.
@Ethan_grobbler with a successful stones mission capturing this beautiful Harlequin fish.
Last weekend offered a small window for crews to get out in King George Sound and the islands. A few squid and modest-sized King George whiting were about but fishing was slow. Around the islands just the odd salmon and small tuna was reported.
Rain, big swells and restricted beach access has made shore fishing a challenge, as is often the case this time of year. Bream chasers have had to work hard in the King and Kalgan rivers after a big influx of freshwater but bream could be worth targeting at the town marina and Emu Point when things settle. The marina may offer a few small skippy, herring and leatherjacket among the pickers but squid chasers are likely to be disappointed. Best bet would be to find a weather window and target Frenchman Bay or Whalers Cove for comfortable fishing. On the beaches it’s a similar story, a few salmon kicking around at Salmon Holes, Cheynes and towards Bremer Bay but getting to them and dealing with the swell will be a challenge as it will be for those after a feed of herring or skippy.
Cheers to the Trailblazers Albany crew for their fishing tips this week! Swing by their store if you're after some top gear and advice ahead of your next fishing trip. Remember, Trailblazers Albany have loan lifejackets available if you wish to fish off the rocks, but keeping the sand between your toes is always a safer option.
@Harry.fisho getting stuck into some sambo stick baiting
Fishing was pretty quiet between the cold fronts. Crews that headed out from Bunbury and a little south found a few Samsonfish on the lumps but little else. The good run of sizeable King George whiting seems to have come to a halt but a few skippy and herring have been about inshore for those happy to throw in a bit of burley. Squid fishing has been slow off Bunbury but, off Busselton, Siesta Park and Abbey Beach squid fishing has been going well for those in tinnies and kayaks.
Another good run of pink snapper for casters and drone fishers was a highlight this week, although numbers weren’t quite as good as the week previous. Pinks were landed regularly at Busselton Jetty, from the Geographe Bay beaches and by drone fishers at the Bunbury Cut and Dalyellup and also the Binningup and Buffalo beaches. A nice pink snapper was landed at Yallingup and Dunsborough produced a few as well. Big mulloway turned up at the Busselton beaches and also at the jetty. Binningup and Buffalo beaches have also produced solid 40-50cm tailor and herring have been thick right along the coast. In the Collie River bream and soapy mulloway have been on the chew between the river mouth and the Collie Bridge.
Big cheers to Whitey's Tackle & Camping for their top fishing tips as always! If you're in Australind or Bunbury and are keen to wet a line throughout our South-West make sure you ask their very friendly team who love their fishing for advice and stock up on gear at their store. If you're in Busselton, the 2 Oceans Tackle team are also incredibly helpful.
The Collie and Capel rivers have been fishing well for redfin perch, as have the Waroona, Wellington and, especially, Harvey dams. The Collie River is yet to flow strongly, being mostly intermittent pools, but it has produced a few small rainbow trout and the odd brown for fly-fishers and those using small hard-bodied lures around Honeymoon Pool. Some nice brown trout have been pulled out of Logue Brook Dam.
@TackleworldMiami customer Mitchell managed this kidney slapper before the blow.
Between the cold fronts boaties have been picking up sand whiting well over 30cm in sandy holes inside the Five-Fathom Bank, while the clearer water on the Five has also fished well for squid. Skippy and the odd Samsonfish have been mooching about burley trails there too. A few decent King George whiting have been landed in 30m depths out from Dawesville, while the 30-40m contours have yielded tuna at times. The Peel-Harvey Estuary is still pretty clear and has offered loads of herring and reasonable numbers of chopper tailor. Those dropping nets for blue swimmer crabs have found a few around Boundary Island and at Point Grey.
Pink snapper fishing has been steady rather than spectacular with the ocean end of the Dawesville Cut, the Mandurah rock walls, Seascapes, San Remo and White Hills, when accessible, producing good fish. The ocean end of the cut and the local beaches have also thrown up big Samsonfish which have been following mullet schools. Good numbers of chopper tailor and herring have been landed along the cut as well. School kids are still having fun in the canals and marinas targeting chunky skippy on micro jigs and soft plastics, while the platform under the new traffic bridge has produced quite a few nice flounder and tarwhine in a range of sizes. A bream competition held in the Murray River last weekend went well with big fish landed around Ravenswood and Murray Bend. Dab netting for prawns has been going well in the Peel-Harvey Estuary.
Thinking of wetting a line around Mandurah? These great tips were courtesy of the super friendly and helpful team at Tackle World Miami so make sure you swing by their store for the best tips and gear before your next fishing trip!
A stunning catch way out wide late last week was a 24kg wahoo caught on a stickbait, which was followed up by a decent Spanish mackerel. Inshore, dirty water has made squid fishing a challenge but they have been picked up a bit deeper when clearer patches can be found. Mangles Bay, the inside of Garden Island and out from Woodman Point produced good hauls between the cold fronts. Skippy around the kilo mark have been landed on the lumps in Cockburn Sound and around Garden Island, while herring and quite often garfish have been in good numbers. Mulloway have been caught at night on live baits in the shipping lanes.
Pink snapper were in very good numbers this week with good fish caught at Secret Harbour, Warnbro, Kwinana, Port Kennedy, Woodman Point and Long Point. A few good mulloway were caught from these locations and mulloway and pink snapper were also landed at the Rockingham and Palm Beach jetties, which have been holding lots of scaly mackerel and a few herring. Herring have been thick on the beaches but tailor seem to have thinned out.
These great fishing tips were provided by the friendly team at Compleat Angler & Camping World in Rockingham, so make sure you chat to their experienced crew in store and stock up before heading out!
@Castawaybell getting her new PB snapper after 4 long years of chasing the progression.
Not much has been happening on the boating front. A few squid have been landed off South Fremantle when weather windows have allowed and skippy, herring and small Samsonfish have been about. Sand whiting and a few King George whiting have been caught inshore from Fremantle up to Two Rocks. Earlier in the week when weather permitted, the big boats headed to the canyon and managed to land swordfish and on the troll back in, laggard mackerel mooching around hitting lures.
This week’s cold front produced pink snapper in fewer numbers with the Fremantle moles failing to really fire. A nice pink was landed at Cottesloe Groyne but most of the good fish came from the Hillarys, Ocean Reef, Mindarie and Two Rocks rock walls and the northern beaches. Tailor fishing has slowed because the beaches have become weeded out but the moles and northern rock walls have picked up for bread-and-butter species such as herring, whiting and skippy. Tailor and mulloway seem to have shut down in the Swan River and bream chasers around the Causeway, East Perth and Maylands have been having a hard time trying to pinpoint where the fish are schooling.
A big thanks to Compleat Angler Nedlands for their great metro tips! These guys are all avid fishers, know the best spots for every particular species and have provided great support to Recfishwest and metro fishers for many years. Make sure you ask their super friendly team for advice at their store just off Stirling Highway and stock up before wetting a line off the land or boat!
