Playa Pan Dulce

The locals handfish... with precision. Here I am with full surf tackle and gear, 3 rods, cast net, all piled up on the beach. These guys had 2 bags. One for the fish they catch, and one for the bait. With no rods or reels, just a spool of fishing line with small weight, they cast their bait surprisingly far, while dipping under each breaker. I watched in amazement as they were constantly bringing in pompanos, triple tails, and snapper. My shrimp and mackeral were not getting any bites.

After seeing some bait balls scattering, I could see there were a lot of glass minnows in the water. The locals were using these for bait. I hooked up a sabiki with 2 of the 5 hooks rigged with glass minnows and caught 2 at a time with the first cast. I had 2 bites that broke off, but still managed to catch a few more pompano for dinner. They were quite tasty.

I returned the next afternoon and found a different group of locals hand fishing. It took a long while to find any bait, and the birds were not circling like the day before. However, with a little patience, I managed to get a few, and was quickly rewarded with more pompano. I then got a really nice strike that broke me off after a short fight. One of the guys handfishing, brought in a nice little snook. I caught a few more fish and gave them all to the locals, in which I was told "numero uno", several times. I wished I could have had the time to fish this area another day.

Don't waste your time at Backwash Bay or Cabo Matapalo, it is too rocky. At Playa Pan Dulce, the bedrock is right in the breakers. You can wade out easily and be standing on smooth rock barefooted without issue. The northern end is definitely the place to be. It is less rocky and the surfers are all on the other end.
