Blue Jays!

 | By Seamus on 8/13/2012 1:35:25 AM | Views (813)
My wife won tickets earlier this year at an auction for the local library to
go see a Toronto Blue Jays game.   My son wanted to see the Yankees,
so that only gave us a few choices of dates, and we picked Aug.11.

This would be only the second professional game for my wife and son
(having seen the Yankees in NY two years ago) and only my second, having
seen the California Angels/Cleveland Indians when I was kid in Cleveland
as the guest of major league ump Lou Dimuro.  We'll save that for another
time......

Anyway, we left Dunkirk with loads of time to spare in the travel schedule.
First clue of a problem was a wait to get into Canada (unusual in my travels)
that pushed 40 minutes.  This was highlighted by a guy directing traffic that
asked us to "hold" for one extra car since there were a couple of "agents"
that had a "government emergency" that they were going to let through
first.   Watched as a NY plated car pulled in front of us, with 2 guys in t-shirts
obviously laughing, and then proceeded to get through customs without even
handing over ID.  We get to the customs guy, who says, sorry about that, it was an
"emergency".  Yeah right.   NY plates, t-shirts.....yeah.  I hope they got stuck in
traffic too.

Then we get to just the other side of Hamilton, and get bogged down in
horrid traffic....all the way to Toronto.  Our 2.5 hr trip took 4.5 hrs, and we,
along with LOADS of others, don't even get to our seats until the 3rd inning.
Lots of similar complaints in the food line.  Which by the way was $48 for 3 hot
dogs, 2 cokes, popcorn and a beer.

Don't get me wrong.  I love Toronto.  Period.

Lots of cool things to do, and places to go.   But when the main exit is on Spadina,
and traffic is somewhat controlled by a traffic light at the base of the exit, and you
have LOTS of extra fans coming since its the Yankees, is it too much to ask for a traffic
cop?

Otherwise, the venue was great.   Great seats, first time at Rogers Center
and it was really nice.    As a life long casual baseball fan, and a casual
Jays fan since they came into the league, I wish the Jays had won.

But my wife and son were happy the Yankees did!   I must confess I seldom
sit and watch a baseball game, but it was pretty clear on this day that the
Blue Jays lack offense!

I think the real way to do a future game would be to find a reasonable
hotel in the greater Toronto area, and tie it in with something else,
like maybe the hockey hall of fame.

The other interesting thing to me, having seen a NHL game, an NFL
game and now an MLB game in the last year, was that this seemed
really differect to me than on TV.   We wondered if it was because
of the dome??

Anyway, I think we'll have to try this again.....

Lake rolled all weekend...........
