“Bull Reds”

Just north of the Savannah shipping channel lies a pile of rocks that according to the nautical charts is a "submerged breakwater" . Local legend has it that back in the olden days when sailing ships made their way into Savannah, this was a designated area for them to drop their ballast -which was rocks. However it came about, in September it is a prime location for "bull" redfish or red drum.

Redfish are probably the most prolific species of gamefish in our waters. They are found almost anywhere in local waters. Anglers chase them on the flats with fly rods and light tackle. Fishing on the bottom in the creeks with live bait or cut dead bait will often produce good catches. They have to be 15-23 inches to put in the cooler for dinner but fish up to 35 inches are often caught inshore. Personally when they get over this 30 inch range I call them "bulls",

But in September the bulls start gathering in numbers off the beach, sandbars and the rock pile. These guys average between 20 and 60 lbs and will blister a drag on a medium weight reel. Often when the bite is on you can catch double digit numbers which makes for quite a memorable day of fishing regardless of the fact that you have to release them.

LIve or dead menhaden, squid, mullet or whiting are my favorite baits and are fished with a fishfinder rig on the bottom. Occasionally they are even hooked by fisherman trolling deep lures. I like to use a twenty lb. spinning rig for maximum fun but have caught them on lighter tackle. However you do it they are "reel" sporty, one of my favorites, and if you notice, the fish on my Bayrunner logo! Read More
