Hooking Up Anglers Since 2011.
Interesting week here on the Metolius. The Green Drake hatch is happening! Folks familiar with The Drake know it can be frustrating. That is, this hatch is very inconsistent. Some days we see clouds of these big, green mayflies. Other days we don’t see any. However, we have been catching fish on dry-fly Drakes even when there is no natural bug in site. And sometimes we can’t buy a fish while we are completely surrounded by a tremendous hatch. Go figure!?! Point being, be patient!
Shop tip: Commit to the hatch. Put on one of our Drake patterns (we have about 30 different dry Drake patterns in our shop) and start searching likely holding spots. Keep on the move. Don’t spend too much time in one place unless you are starting to get action. Best in mid-afternoon. The folks that end up hooking numerous fish on Drakes are the ones who spend as much time on the water as possible. Couple days a week or more if possible. The more time on the water gives you a better chance of hitting conditions just right!!
Golden Stone hatch is about a month away.
Rainbows: Green Drake, PMD, BWO, midge, Caddis (tan, grn, brn), Golden Stone Nymph, Rusty Spinners
Bull Trout: has been consistent for the “resident” fish. The big lake runners are back in the lake. Pay special attention to deep pools and tail-outs. Steelhead gear and techniques works best, 7 weight rod minimum. A variety of streamers and nymphs pick up Bulls. Come check out our large selection of Bull Trout flies.
