Metolius River - November 17th 2013

November on the Metolius river for me is a time of reflection and exploring.  The crowds of the busy tourist season are gone, most of the cabins along the river are empty and quiet, the fall colors of the deciduous trees and Tamaracks are being replaced with the simplicity of the leaflessness character of winter.

Bugs - with most of the days this winter filled with precipitation of some form, sub-surface/nymphing will be the most productive.  However still keep an eye open for the BWO's, midges, the little black stone,  and possibly a few PMD's still in the air, for above surface activity action.

Yes BIG Bull trout are still in the river in good numbers and are (shop/ client fishing reports) still very actively feeding, streamers with lots of articulation and attraction, that represent small (6"-8") fish species of the river will be my patterns of choice.  Keep in mind that Bull trout are listed as a threatened species on the Metolius and they must be treated, handled and released, unharmed.  If you can not do that then don't fish for them.

Exploring - try new water, water that looked dam good in the spring and summer that was occupied by another angler then, is probably not now.  Hit all the sexy spots, and take your time.

Reflection - I have often wondered, if there is a connection with the fall colors of the leaves, looking so similar, to the colors of the skins of the migrating salmon during the exact time of the season. The salmon and the leaves are returning to their birth place and their roots of origin. Both to give life back, from their life spent.  One to the soils of the streams and one to the soils of the lands.

Please respect all the river users and all life of the river, enjoy your day and Get Bent.
