In 1895 with a cargo of flour, etc, the Emma Matilda was lost during a south-easterly gale at North Head, Sydney Harbour. The vessel was mastered by its owner and had a crew of 2; there was one death recorded. The 12 ton wooden cutter built in Hawkesbury River, NSW and owned by Fredrick Bernsdorff was used in the coastal cargo trade.

A sad disaster occurred of Sydney Heads on Wednesday, when Emma Matilda, captained by Mr Fred Bernsdorf, was wrecked, and the captain drowned, and his son narrowly escaped meeting a similar fate.

The Emma Matilda was 20 years old. She was built at the McDonald River, and had traded the river for some three years making one trip a month. Her cargo consisted of flour, potatoes, onions, beef and ballast
