Heritage Waypoint List Tim Smith

Freak. Wooden schooner, 79 tons. #31953. Reg. Sydney, 46/1860. Length 77 ft. Lost on middle bank at Port Stephens during the gale, 7 October 1864. [LN],[SAN],[BNN]

The 79 ton Freak went aground on a sand bank inside of Port Stephens on 7 October 1864. The schooner's anchors dragged while sheltering from a gale with a cargo of coal from Newcastle. No lives were lost in this incident.

The official registers do not record the country of origin of the Freak or the year in which the wooden schooner was built. We do know however that the vessel was one of the relatively few registered with a female owner, Catherine Summerbell.

In the late 1980's a considerable amount of volunteer maritime archaeological survey was undertaken on this site by the Maritime Archaeology Association of New South Wales.
