Mary. Wooden brigantine, 162 tons. Built Victoria, 1854; reg. Melbourne, 13/1864. Length 34 ft. Ashore and lost in a gale in Wreck Bay, NSW, 8 February 1874. [LN],[SAN]


Mary Cove in Wreck Bay is thought to have been named after the loss of the 162-ton timber schooner Mary which wrecked there at 1.00 a.m. on 9 February 1874. The 28.96 metre vessel was on a voyage from Melbourne to Newcastle in ballast when it sought shelter during a violent southerly storm. Unfortunately the vessel carried ashore leaving Captain Postle and six crew to reach Jervis Bay by foot. Mary was built at Massachusetts, USA, under the name Abby & Elizabeth and was registered for some time in Barbados.
