Located 3 nautical miles East of Plumtree Point, between Back River and the Poquoson River, lies the circular reef site named Back River Reef. This site consists of forty concrete igloos, positioned 50 feet apart in the shape of an "X" with legs running in the Northwest-Southeast and Northeast-Southwest directions. The depth of the reef is 24 feet, with a profile ranging from 3 to 8 feet.
The north legs of the "X" are adorned with concrete tetrahedrons, while concrete pipe, girders, and clusters are present on the south legs. In 2005, an additional 2400 tons of concrete bridge sections and piles were added to the existing concrete pier rubble and pipe.
The center of the reef site is indicated by a yellow buoy designated as "BR" by the Virginia Marine Resources Commission (VMRC).
