Mizpah - Corridor Wreck Trek

 | By Seamus on 1/14/2018 1:33:05 AM | Views (678)
The 185 ft Greek Luxury liner Mizpah, built in 1926, was sunk to serve as an artificial reef. It lies in a north-south orientation about a mile northeast of the Palm Beach Inlet. The Mizpah is upright and intact except for a split forward of the upper deck in 90 feet of water. In Oct, 1991, a storm damaged the stern. The bow was open by the seas.About 100 yards from the bow of the Mispah is the PC 1170, a 165' military patrol craft sunk in 1968. It rests upright in two sections. Some of the largest moray eels on the east coast make their home inside the vessel along with tons of fish, eagle rays, spiny oysters, and soft corals that cover the ship from bow to stern. Following a large rock pile, the Amaryllis is the third in line on this dive. Only the hull and bottom deck of this 450 foot ship remain as the other decks were removed to salvage the boat after it washed ashore during a hurricane. The China Barge is the fourth in line on this amazing site, although most divers don’t reach it before needing to ascend. sAs a dive site, The Corridor is an excellent training site for advanced, deep, and wreck specialties. The Mizpah is one of the most entertaining wrecks to penetrate and explore. Before her sinking, all the doors and portholes were removed for divers’ safety, leaving her well-exposed to light for the flushing effect of ever-present currents. Consequently, lights are seldom needed when exploring the wreck. The Mizpah rests in 85 feet of salt water and therefore is only accessible to divers who hold an Advanced Open Water certification. Because the hull is split open at the bow this wreck is easy to penetrate so prior training and experience in wreck diving with limited penetration is recommended. The visibility differs slightly with the time of year, however is usually in excess of 45 feet. As with the visibility, the water temperature is also variable depending on the season. The afternoon average temperature in the winter is 74°F/23°C and 90°F/32°C in the summer time. There is a south to north current through the dive site year round which can vary in strength from .5 to 4 knots. Because of this current, the Mizpah is commonly dove as part of a drift dive that consists of the Mizpah, PC-1174, and the Amaryllis ship wrecks, however an entire dive could easily be spent on the Mizpah alone.
