The Carrum Artificial Reef, constructed in 1965, was the first documented artificial reef in Australia. The original reef spanned four hectares and consisted of 350 concrete pipes that were submerged 8km off the coast of Carrum. These pipes settled into the silt at the bottom. Subsequently, a concrete vessel was incorporated into the reef in 1967, and in 1971, the 52-meter Uralba timber hulk was filled with ballast and sunk. Today, the remaining structures of the reef serve as habitats for fish.
