$3 MILLION MARRON HABITAT BOOST!

As part of the State Budget, the Government has committed $3 million to improve marron habitats in three key South West dams – Harvey, Logue Brook and Wellington. These improvements will support marron breeding and enhance the fishing experience for the thousands of fishers who take part in the short, but special January marron season.

This is a welcome announcement – and one we’ve been proud to advocate for on your behalf.

Broome catches
A few nice tuskies were landed by @dirty_baito and his partner off Broome this week. With sharks a common threat when chasing this species, make sure you move spots frequently and check out all our tips for avoiding shark bite-off here.

Boats

Sailfish have been in excellent numbers a couple of kilometres off Coconut Wells and Willie Creek. Spanish mackerel in a range of sizes have been prolific from Gantheaume Point to the north, although sharks have been a challenge at times. Bottom fishing has been good out wide in 40m, with coral trout, red emperor and Rankin cod the main catches. Closer in, bluebone and blue-lined emperor have been in good numbers off Entrance and Gantheaume points. Dinghy fishers off Quandong have been getting lots of queenfish. In Roebuck Bay, tripletail catches have been good around the moorings when the wind has been down and a few threadfin salmon have also been about. At night, northern mulloway and fingermark perch have been caught at The Deeps. A few threadfin salmon have been taken at the Fingers and Crab Creek, while all the local creeks have been producing mud crabs. The conditions look favourable for the boats this weekend before some windy weather arrives early next week.

Shore-based

The Town Beach Jetty has been thick with queenfish and also offered some good bream and plenty of whiting. More whiting have also been in good numbers at Coconut Wells and Cable Beach, where the odd blue-nosed salmon has been landed. Queenfish, trevally and bluebone have been caught by those wading out at Entrance Point, while Gantheaume Point has been fishing very well, producing queenfish, bluebone and even the odd coral trout and Spanish mackerel. Queenfish have been thick at Barred and Willie Creeks, but barramundi activity is well down in the Fitzroy River.

Big thanks to the crew from Tackle World Broome for their tips! Make sure you pay them a visit for the best gear and advice for your next fishing trip.
Exmouth catches
How does this Rankin rank for one of the biggest we've seen recently! A cracking fish from @jamesnjacqdriftin this week.

Boats

Crews have sighted good numbers of black marlin and raised them in twos and threes, but not a lot have been landed. Good numbers of dolphinfish around a metre have been among the bycatch. Goldband snapper catches have been consistent in 80-100m, while the 40-70m depths have offered Rankin cod and a few coral trout. Spanish mackerel have been hard to find, but spangled emperor have been caught in the lagoon at Tantabiddi. Charter boats have been finding fish up at the Muirons, but smaller boats have been restricted because of the conditions. Spanish mackerel, golden trevally, Rankin cod, coral trout, spangled emperor and the odd red emperor have been the main catches there. In the Exmouth Gulf, crews using burley have landed a few coral trout and blue-lined emperor as well as school mackerel on the Shoals, but fishing has been generally quiet. Squid fishing has been decent on the weed banks in close. With the big swell on the forecast, it looks like most boats will be kept on the trailers this weekend. Wednesday onwards should see better conditions return.

Shore-based

A delicious dinner sorted for @salty_rena!

A few bluebone have been mixed in with spangled emperor around Mildura Wreck. Spangled emperor were in decent numbers from VLF Bay headed north, with a few also being caught at Tantabiddi. The town marina has held mainly bream and small trevally, but nice queenfish and golden trevally have been caught from the ocean rock wall. Squid have also been active from the rocks at the light industrial area. Garfish have been caught near the industrial area, through to Learmonth. Learmonth Jetty has also produced small queenfish, bream and the odd whiting, along with good catches of squid. Bundegi offered its usual topwater action with decent golden trevally and queenfish being caught there.

These great tips were courtesy of the friendly team at Tackle World Exmouth. Swing by their store for the best advice and gear ahead of your next trip!

Kalbarri catches
A couple of lovely baldchin were landed north of town by @survivingfishingadventures this week. Make sure you always wear a lifejacket if attempting this type of fishing off the rocks.

Boats

Before the cold front hit, the Spanish mackerel were active at the Sand Patch, off Red Bluff and also along the cliffs. There were quite a few tuna in the mix as well. Demersal fishing has been going well with a nice mix of pink snapper and baldchin groper taken either side of town, while north of town fishers on charter were able to catch a few Rankin cod and red emperor. A crew fishing the lumps off Port Gregory this week picked up a couple of nice dhufish and coral trout. There is some rough weather forecast across this weekend which may prevent most boats from getting out for a fish. Sunday may pose an opportunity to duck out if there ends up being a gap in the weather. Monday onwards should see better conditions return.

Shore-based

Big winter tailor are starting to appear in better numbers now, with @brodielyonss producing the goods at sunset.

The cliffs have been fishing well for pink snapper, mulloway and decent tailor. Red Bluff and Wittecarra have offered tailor to 45cm and solid dart, although weed has been a problem at times. In the Murchison River, a few mulloway were caught at the river mouth and a big one was taken a fair way up stream. Decent mulloway were also landed at the marina jetty and the Sand Spit. Yellowfin whiting fishing picked up at the river mouth and Sand Spit before the rain arrived. Reasonable bream and decent cod have been in the river’s middle and upper reaches and giant herring have been active too.

Shout out to Dean from Kalbarri Sports and Dive for his tips! Feel free to venture into his store to ask for advice if you're wetting a line around Kalbarri!
Geraldton catches
Mission success for @_chlo_s who wanted to land her first ever tailor this week in town!

Boats

Last weekend crews worked hard for demersals both north and south of town, landing small dhufish in close. Pink snapper and baldchin groper were caught towards Drummond Cove and off Greenough, as well as at African Reef. Unfortunately, the forecast is not going to be favourable to the boat fishers for a while and the swell and wind is looking rather diabolical until at least Thursday next week.

Shore-based

A few blue swimmer crabs have been kicking around the boat harbours and marinas in Geraldton and Dongara. The strong freshwater flow has meant that the local creeks have been offering good feeds of yabbies. Bream have been in the marina in Dongara and they should be worth trying for in the Greenough River. At the Batavia Coast Marina keen young anglers who normally chase bream have been using micro jigs to catch herring, pike and tailor. A few reasonable tailor have been caught from behind the Lives, while decent skippy have been landed at the rocks near the Sail Inn. Before the cold front hit school mulloway were caught either side of Lucys, but swells and lots of weed have limited shore fishing since and this might continue for a while given the major swell and winds expected for most of the next week.

Thanks to the team at Geraldton Sports Centre for their tips! They will happily provide you with great gear and the solid advice for your next fishing trip.
Lancelin catches

Boats

Boats heading out to the shelf have been finding big schools of pink snapper. Anglers setting up a burly trail inshore intending to find a pinkie have had some whopper skippy schooling under the boat, with fish to 50cm taking whole pilchards. Skippy at this size makes for an exciting session on lighter gear with screaming reels and mayhem from multiple hookups. Sand patches north and south of town in 5-6m depths have been an excellent producer of plump sand whiting. Within the bay there were plenty of squid, herring and skippy. The weather in Lancelin this weekend will make taking the boat out impossible. The forecast shows that late next week may bring about some more favourable conditions but boats are staying on trailers for now.

Shore-based

The fishing action has been slow numbers-wise, although catch quality has made the efforts worth it with tailor to 70cm and mulloway well over a meter in length being landed. The bay's shelter has offered some great fishing during the swells with plenty of herring and sand whiting from some nice weed free beaches. Nighttime at the jetty has been a top spot to catch a few tailor, skippy and herring and this might be the only good easy option over the coming days given the big swell and wind expected until at least Tuesday.

Big thanks to Peter Fullarton for his tips on what's biting around Lancelin each week! If you want Peter to put you on to the fish directly, make sure you check out his Tailored Treks Tours page. Always a great time and Peter knows the best spots around Lancelin like the back of his hand.

Esperance catches
The Chase the Kraken comp is spicing up and @jesse.smithson landed a serious contender right in the middle of town. Venture in to Southern Sports & Tackle and enter the comp for only $20 for a chance at some impressive prizes listed below!

Boats

Breaskea cod and nannygai have been caught behind Observatory Island, while Lion Island has offered big queen snapper and harlequin. Huge sand whiting have been taken off the Cape and at Black Island, while squid have been in good numbers in 18m behind Cook Rocks. Big King George whiting have been caught at Lovers Cove, while Esperance Bay has fished well for squid, herring and snook. Boat fishers will have to give it a miss for a while with a monster swell expected until at least Wednesday evening.

Shore-based

This mulloway topped off an awesome camping trip on our picturesque South Coast for @tahj_hotker and his partner.

Big skippy and lots of gummy sharks have been the main fare at Thomas River, while mulloway have been plentiful at Poison Creek. Alexander Bay has yielded salmon and skippy, while big flathead and sand whiting have been caught at Stockyards. Salmon have been plentiful at 14-Mile and Fourth Beaches, while Roses Beach has held mulloway and salmon as well. Good numbers of King George whiting have been taken from the town foreshore, while Town Jetty and Taylor Street Jetty have offered big squid with hoods to 40cm (potential winners of Chase the Kraken there). King George whiting and big herring have been on the chew in Bandy Creek Boat Harbour, while Woody Lake has yielded bream to 40cm.

Hats off to the very knowledgeable team at Southern Sports & Tackle for their tips! These guys love their fishing as well, so make sure you swing by their store for the best gear and advice before wetting a line around Esperance.

Great Southern catches
@liammorrow2 became the latest member of the glidebait mulloway club this week after venturing out with the skilled @thetidaltale crew up river. Not bad for a weekday session!

Boats

As fate would have it conditions turned out to be quite reasonable after the squid competition was postponed. Crews were very successful over the weekend and early in the week at Frenchman Bay, Goode Beach and Quaranup. The new range of jointed squid jigs fished very well, as did the Shimano Jet Boost Clinch jigs in white. The islands fired for King George whiting, but while the wind was down the swells were up which ruled out missions further out. The forecast is looking diabolical with high swells and strong winds that will keep boats out of the water until at least Wednesday at this stage.

Shore-based

There’s been no sign of salmon, apart from a cameo up at Walpole early last week. Most fishers have been targeting herring and skippy which have been in good numbers at Ledge Point and Gull Rock. Squid fishing has been good at Frenchman Bay where herring have been plentiful and small King George whiting were always a chance. Squid have been in good numbers at the town marina, which has also held bream, herring and skippy. The dirty water at Emu Point has cleared and along with squid, lots of small herring and the odd flathead have been caught. Samsonfish were also lurking in the channel. Bream have fired again in the King and Kalgan rivers with good fish being taken on hard-bodied lures and soft plastics and these spots are the safer option given the coast is going to be ravaged by massive swells and wind for the next five days or so.

Cheers to the Trailblazers Albany crew for their fishing tips this week! Swing by their store if you're after some top gear and advice ahead of your next fishing trip. Remember, you'll also catch just as many fish off the beaches than the rocks and it is always much safer to go with this option on the south coast.

South-West catches
It was pink snapper mayhem this week off Busselton, with @levi_bowman_fishing and @insalt_fishing both hooking up simultaneously.

Boats

It’s been hard to get away from the pink snapper with crews finding plenty either side of Bunbury and in Geographe Bay in as little as 5m, although the 8-15m depths have been more consistent. Good pinkies have been taken from 800m out from Hungry Hollow, Maidens and Buffalo Beach. Skippy nudging 50cm have been plentiful in the burley trails and a few dhufish have been mixed in as well. Most crews have been content to get their boat limits on pink snapper, but a few targeting dhufish have been drifting over shallow isolated lumps and broken ground where they picked up some big King George whiting as well as dhufish. Weather conditions have restricted most boats from getting out to the deeper demersal ground. Squid fishing off Bunbury has been quiet, but it has been reasonable in Geographe Bay, while cuttlefish have been plentiful at both locations. The conditions are not looking good for taking the boat out this weekend at all with raging winds but Tuesday onwards should see better conditions return.

Shore-based

An absolute beauty of a pinkie landed in our South-West this week by @ausygreen amidst a lot of weed before it was safely released.

The great land-based pink snapper run has slowed a tad, probably due to the calmer conditions. Beaches north and south of Bunbury have produced a few good-sized tailor and herring have been plentiful. At Belvedere and Dalyellup skippy have been mixed in with the herring and tailor. The Bunbury Cut has been much quieter after its pink snapper run, but it has offered a few herring and chopper tailor. Back Beach also saw tailor and herring caught, while at Busselton Jetty there has been little else caught apart from the squid and herring staples. The rocks at Yallingup have produced dhufish and pink snapper, while a couple of stray salmon were caught around Yeagerup on live baits last week.

Big cheers to Whitey's Tackle & Camping for their top fishing tips as always! If you're in Australind or Bunbury and are keen to wet a line throughout our South-West make sure you ask their very friendly team who love their fishing for advice and stock up on gear at their store. If you're in Busselton, the 2 Oceans Tackle team are also incredibly helpful.

@freshwest_ got to watch this lovely buck dart out of the flow of a stream to make a strike and positioning yourself behind rapids or whitewater and throwing lures, spinners, flies or plastics into this kind of territory is a good bet for a hookup.
A couple of nice rainbow trout have been pulled out of Harvey Dam, with some taking soft plastics meant for redfin perch, which have also been in good numbers and sizes there. A few redfin have been in the Collie River and some decent trout have been sighted there too. Big redfin have also been caught in the Pemberton region and Tone River where old-school Celta spinners have been doing the job. With rivers and streams flowing well, decent trout have been caught around Pemberton, but fishers have been secretive about locations. There have been whispers of nice rainbows and browns at Lefroy Brook.
Mandurah and surrounds

Boats: Inshore fishing for pink snapper was very good before the cold front arrived with plenty of good fish showing up in burley trails at James Service Reef, Murray Reef and on and inside of the Five-Fathom Bank. Plenty of good skippy were mixed in and at the Five, King George whiting around the 50cm were landed. The 25m+ depths off Dawesville offered a few dhufish, baldchin groper and breaksea cod. Herring, skippy and tailor have been plentiful in the estuary, along with good numbers of squid with quite a few good sizes. The weather won’t be favourable for the boaties until at least Tuesday as a result of the large swell and strong winds.

Ash Ramm from Tackle World Miami was also a guest on the Tall Tails Podcast recently giving his tips on dhuies and pink snapper fishing! Check out the episode here!

Land-based: Pink snapper chasers were in their element this week with some good fish landed at the Dawesville Cut and the town rock wall. A few popped up down at White Hills, along with some decent tailor and the odd mulloway. The ocean end of the Dawesville Cut produced some tailor as well, while towards the estuary end herring and squid were in good numbers. The Mandurah bridges also produced herring and squid, so they will be spots worth trying once the water clears. The Serpentine and Murray rivers have produced soapy mulloway along with some excellent bream well over 40cm. Very good fish were caught in the Murray during the bream competition last weekend.

Thinking of wetting a line around Mandurah? These great tips were courtesy of the super friendly and helpful team at Tackle World Miami so make sure you swing by their store for the best tips and gear before your next fishing trip!

SECRET HARBOUR / PORT KENNEDY / ROCKINGHAM / SAFETY BAY / WARNBRO SOUND

Boats: Pink snapper were plentiful inshore with crews who anchored and sent out burley trails finding success at most of the regular haunts including the D9, Sulphur Rock, off Point Peron, out from the grain terminal, off Woodman Point, around Garden Island, along the Garden Island causeway, at the Sisters and off Port Kennedy. The 10-15m depths have been the most productive. Skippy around 50cm have been active in the burley trails as well. Crews able to head out wider found dhufish in 40m-plus depths. Squid catches have been reasonable in 2-3m in Mangles Bay and inside of Garden Island when clean water can be found. Slimy mackerel, herring and the odd King George whiting have been caught inshore. The conditions won’t favour anyone this weekend. Early next week will start to clear up.

Land-based: Pink snapper have been active on the local beaches and rock walls with Woodman Point, Secret Harbour, Port Kennedy and Long Point all producing good fish this week for both drone fishers and casters. Herring have been plentiful, but tailor catches slowed despite sizes being good. The Ammo Jetty and Rockingham and Palm Beach jetties have been quiet, offering mainly herring, scaly mackerel, slimy mackerel and squid.

These great fishing tips were provided by the friendly team at Compleat Angler & Camping World in Rockingham, so make sure you chat to their experienced crew in store and stock up before heading out!
Perth catches
Lecca @mlecras2 ducked out for an early morning send off Perth this week and came up trumps on the pinkies.

Boats

The cold front has certainly shut down a lot of options and that will continue until at least Tuesday at this stage. It’s very likely the Spanish mackerel around Three-Mile Reef, off Ocean Reef and at Rottnest Island have scattered. Crews fishing close in off the northern suburbs were getting plenty of pink snapper in their burley trails along with nice skippy and a few breaksea cod, and the pinkies are likely to bounce back when weather windows can be found this week. The Three-Mile Reef produced good skippy and pink snapper, while Mewstones produced pinkies along with some good tailor. Squid and King George whiting were being caught off Hillarys and South Fremantle, but the dirty water will make fishing for the former difficult. Early in the week a few dhufish were caught off Rottnest and Two Rocks. The westerlies and swell forecast for this weekend will most likely keep boats out of the water for a while. Some calmer conditions look to be arriving on Tuesday.

Both the lads from the Tall Tails Podcast managed a good fish this week, with Jake Rotham @rothy_mate also having a successful evening session chasing mulloway on the Swan.

Shore-based

Pink snapper chasers were disappointed with the closure of North Mole from Monday to Thursday this week. However, a few good fish were taken there last weekend and throughout the week from the rocks at Coogee, Hillarys, Mindarie and Two Rocks along with the northern beaches. If you are going to chase snapper of the stones this weekend, we advise to wear a life jacket given the swell looks pretty gnarly. Check out our safe fishing page for more tips. Big mulloway have been turning up as well with a fine midweek fish taken from South Mole. Before the blow, the beaches were holding herring and the odd skippy, with a few good winter tailor turning up in reefy areas such as Cottesloe. Anglers fishing the sheltered marinas and rock walls around South Fremantle have been picking up herring, garfish, yellowtail, slimy mackerel, tarwhine, and a few bream. Good skippy were caught at North Mole last weekend and at South Mole before the cold front hit. It’s been very quiet in the Swan River given the recent rains. Bream have been very reluctant to take lures, although a few have been caught on fresh bait. Areas from Bayswater downriver have produced a few, with some of more consistent locations including Canning Bridge and the Causeway. Jetties in the lower reaches have thrown up the odd just-legal sized chopper tailor. The wind and rain will not provide land-based fishers with many opportunities to go out this weekend but a pinkie is a chance off the rock walls if you're brave enough to face the conditions and don't mind getting wet. Make sure you put your safety first if attempting this.

A big thanks to Compleat Angler Nedlands for their great tips! These guys are all avid fishers, know the best spots for every particular species and have provided great support to Recfishwest and metro fishers for many years. Make sure you ask their super friendly team for advice at their store just off Stirling Highway and stock up before wetting a line off the land or boat!
