Pic of the Week!

It doesn't get much better than a PB snapper at sunset and this cracker of a snap from @hunter__hebb takes out pic of the week. This solid 80cm fish had the reel screaming and it was a perfect way to top off a glassy weather window off Mandurah for the avid fisher.

Broome catches
An awesome few days along the Fitzroy River for @yeh.cobba resulted in her first barra going 73cm.

Boats

Catches have been good out wide with plenty of red emperor, Spanish flag and coral trout on the lumps. Sailfish, tuna and Spanish mackerel were active from Port Smith to Cable Beach along with Barred Creek and at the shoals, especially Peanut. Sailfish have also been active off Barn Hill. Bluebone and coral trout have been in close off Barred Creek, while Crab Creek has been fishing well for barramundi and threadfin salmon. The Fingers has held threadfin salmon and a few mangrove jack and mud crabs were in reasonable numbers in most systems. A few northern mulloway were caught from the lumps in Roebuck Bay and also offshore among the pelagic and reef species. Thankfully the next few days are looking quite pleasant on the forecast with lighter winds accompanying a lower swell. Saturday evening and Sunday’s forecast looks best at this stage.

Lake Kununurra, otherwise known as 'barradise', producing the goods again for @lizzymc_5.

Shore-based

Holiday-makers have been doing well at Town Beach Jetty and were landing a few threadfin salmon and small barramundi as well as the usual fare of bream, javelinfish, trevally and queenfish. A few small barramundi have also been landed from beaches in the bay, which also offered bream, javelinfish, blue salmon, small queenfish and trevally. Whiting have been quiet but catches are expected to improve this weekend. Gantheaume Point has fished well for bluebone and the odd coral trout, with spearfishers doing best there on the trout. Entrance Point has held queenfish and trevally, while Barred Creek fished well off the rocks and near the pearl farm for barramundi and threadfin salmon. Those targeting barramundi in the Fitzroy River have generally found it very quiet, but the occasional barra did pop up.

Big thanks to the crew from Tackle World Broome for their tips! Make sure you pay them a visit for the best gear and advice for your next fishing trip.
Exmouth catches
@liamwesson with one of the biggest coral trout we've seen in recent memory not far from shore! Up there as one of the best tasting fish in the sea.

Boats

Despite the blowy conditions crews that punched though the wash on the west side encountered black marlin and sailfish. Those bouncing on the bottom in 80-120m found good numbers of goldband snapper and saddletail snapper, with a few pearl perch mixed in. In 20-40m red emperor, coral trout and the odd Rankin cod have been caught. Small Spanish mackerel have been caught at the back of the reef and they have been caught in better sizes further out by crews skipping garfish baits. Spangled emperor and the odd coral trout have been pulled out of the lagoons. Getting to the Muirons has been tricky, but they have held decent mackerel and cobia along with red emperor and coral trout in 20-30m. Waters in Exmouth Gulf have been a bit murky, making it harder for squid fishers, but on the eastern side and further south it’s been a bit cleaner. Spanish mackerel have been mixed in with school mackerel on the Shoals, which have also held a few cobia and giant trevally. Bottom fishers around here have picked up blue-lined emperor, bluebone and spangled emperor. Blue swimmer crabs have been pulled up deep in the Gulf. The weather looks inviting for the boaties over the coming days and the swell will gradually creep up to around 2m by Monday and continue to rise to 3m by Thursday. The next two mornings look best.

Black snapper are frequently caught in close in the lagoons and are often mistaken for their spangled emperor cousins. A great fish from @kjell_hensen_.

Shore-based

Kids making the most of the school holidays have been fishing Exmouth Gulf’s sandy beaches and were picking up reasonable numbers of whiting in the first week of the holidays. In the town marina they have landed bream, small spangled emperor and a few mangrove jack. On the marina’s outside rock wall squid, garfish, giant trevally and the odd queenfish have been caught, while Bundegi has held garfish and a few queenfish. Learmonth has been fairly quiet, but giant trevally and golden trevally have turned up at times. Whiting and flathead have been caught at the mouth of Wapet Creek, while further in bream and mangrove jack have been active. The tip of the Gulf has yielded mainly spangled emperor and the odd queenfish, while Tantabiddi has offered a few small spangled emperor.

These great tips were courtesy of the friendly team at Tackle World Exmouth. Swing by their store for the best advice and gear ahead of your next trip!

Kalbarri catches
Shimano ambassador @nickihuntfishing with a lovely golden trevally that was no match for her Shimano Lucanus jig, Stradic 6000 reel and Extraction rod.

Boats

Most boating was a write-off this week due to the dodgy weather, but last Saturday a few Spanish mackerel were landed off Red Bluff, while crews at the Sand Patch picked up a few pink snapper. Out wider the pinkies were mixed in with Rankin cod. Both mornings this weekend look possible for a fish despite a bit of rain expected and a 2m swell. Sunday morning is looking best at this stage.

Shore-based

Tailor to 70cm have been taken at Chinamans and at the mouth of the Murchison River, while in the river itself youngsters on school holidays have been having a ball catching chopper tailor around the 35cm mark. Big mulloway have also made an appearance with fish to 20kg landed at Chinamans along with at the Sand Spit. A 14kg mulloway was landed at the marina jetty this week and an even bigger fish was lost. Cod to 65cm and bream around 30cm have been at the marina jetty and up river, while a few yellowfin whiting have been caught at the Sand Spit. Mud crab catches have been steady from the marina jetty and a few blue swimmer crabs have been pulled up closer to the mouth. Pink snapper have been caught in decent numbers at Red Bluff. Sunday morning looks best for land-based fishers on the forecast.

Shout out to Dean from Kalbarri Sports and Dive for his tips! Feel free to venture into his store to ask for advice if you're wetting a line around Kalbarri.
Geraldton catches
Local yak fishing enthusiast @mat.svenson with a nice longtail tuna caught on a slim minnow off Geraldton.

Boats

It’s been a miserable week on the fishing front with big swells ruling out most fishing and no reports coming in. Fishing for pink snapper had generally been good before the weather spoiled the party with good mixed bags featuring quite a few northern species. That swell is still rather high and will be hovering around 3m. Sunday morning until around midday will see a drop in those southerly winds so take caution of that swell if heading out. Tuesday evening may hold another opportunity to duck out.

Shore-based

Weed and swells cruelled beach fishing this week with the rock walls around town saving the day. The platform and small groyne on the north side of the Batavia Coast Marina has produced mulloway to just over a metre, along with a few tailor in the evenings. Lots of herring and hordes of small pike have also been landed. Small Halco Twisty’s have been a good lure choice for those chasing either species. Inside the marina, along the boardwalk, off the small jetty and floating pontoon skippy to 45cm have been landed, with fishers using micro jigs and soft plastics doing best. Some of these fishers have been bitten off by small tailor and pike at times. Closer to town, the rock wall in front of the Sail Inn has produced some big skippy too, but even bigger cod have been cleaning up the hooked skippy at times. Given this unfavourable weather will continue it could be worth a crack chasing bream in the Greenough River.

Gotta love when a silver ghost makes the reel sing! A lovely mulloway that was quickly snapped and released by @saltyfishos this week.

Thanks to the team at Geraldton Sports Centre for their tips! They will happily provide you with great gear and the solid advice for your next fishing trip.
Lancelin catches

Boats

Not many boats managed to venture out this week due to the higher swells and winds slamming the brakes on any fishing plans. Pink snapper catches have been plentiful from shore though and they seem to have really switched on following the storms. Those that did manage to duck out briefly have reported Samsonfish within the Bay, along with skippy, herring, King George whiting and snook. That swell is still looking a tad too high for an easy beach launch across the coming days so land-based fishing would be a safer option. Sunday morning should see a drop off in the wind with around a 2.6m swell expected, but the next best option on the forecast this week is looking like Tuesday morning.

Shore-based

It was tough going again for a lot of beach fishers due to the weather and weed was playing havoc throughout some of the more popular spots. Despite this, fishers have reported good catches of pink snapper when clear patches of beach can be found and some nice gutters have started to form following the larger swells. Thanks to this, some big mulloway and tailor have also been caught, although the numbers have been down (mostly from lack of trying against the weather). Sunday morning looks to be the best window for land-based fishing this week and soaking a bait should produce the goods on either snapper, mulloway or a greenback tailor. Just aim to use a heavier sinker in the stronger swell or try launching out some stickbaits for tailor over the waves. The jetty around sunset and into the evenings is also worth a shot and despite the wind expected, this is your best bet for a feed of herring, skippy, tailor and possibly a Samsonfish.

Big thanks to Peter Fullarton for his tips on what's biting around Lancelin each week! If you want Peter to put you on to the fish directly, make sure you check out his Tailored Treks Tours page. Always a great time and Peter knows the best spots around Lancelin like the back of his hand.

Esperance catches
This yellowtail kingfish was one of many species landed during @gidos_fishing_adventures latest trip to an island off the South Coast.

Boats

Good numbers of Samsonfish have been caught at Black and Woody Islands, while thumping nannygai and harlequin have been landed near Mondrain Island. Queen snapper and breaksea cod have been prolific in the shallows at Observatory Island, while at Cook Rocks crews have been bagging out on big squid which could provide a potential prize in the Chase the Kraken comp. In Esperance Bay King George whiting, herring and snook have been in good numbers and plenty of big squid have been landed in 5-6m. The weather isn’t looking great again this week and the only possible window looks to be Sunday around midday with a slight drop in the south-westerly wind expected along with a swell just above 2m.

Shore-based

Nice gutters and holes have formed at Thomas River which have been frequented by mulloway and big gummy sharks, while at Dunns Beach large gummy sharks and sizeable skippy have been the order of the day. Flathead, tarwhine and large sand whiting have been active at Wylie Bay, while Fourth and 14 Mile beaches have been salmon hotspots. Decent King George whiting have been taken from the port viewing area, while both the Town and Taylor Street jetties have fished well for squid, garfish and big herring. Bandy Creek Boat Harbour has yielded bream, flathead and King George whiting.

Hats off to the very knowledgeable team at Southern Sports & Tackle for their tips! These guys love their fishing as well, so make sure you swing by their store for the best gear and advice before wetting a line around Esperance.

Great Southern catches
A quick mid-week mission out to the coral grounds off Albany for @andrew_ward_3 saw some nice fish come over the side, including this blue groper before the wind became grumpy.

Boats

A weather window last Saturday morning was pretty much the only session on offer for crews over the past week and for most of those that made the effort it was worth it. Herring, big squid and decent King George whiting were taken on the Frenchman Bay side of King George Sound, where the water was much cleaner. Crews that got out to the 50m marks did well on pink snapper, dhufish and breaksea cod at Passage Reef and Eclipse Island. That swell is still looking rather grumpy and will hover above 3m on Sunday despite a low wind expected in the morning, so take caution of this if you’re heading out. Outside of that the weather looks rather diabolical again this week with big winds and swell ruining fishing aspirations.

Structure is your friend when trying to find black bream up river and @matthewdeboer94 made the most of a calm arvo session.

Shore-based

The Albany Boating and Fishing Club are running their Southern Squid Spectacular comp! Registration will be on Sunday the 13 July from 06:30 at Emu Point Club House and they even have a $200 BCF voucher up for grabs for the best ink shot (more ink to the face the better). Visit the Albany Boating and Fishing Club Facebook Page for more!

There has been a good back run of salmon at Bremer Bay, but little action was reported on the beaches near town despite most holding the odd resident salmon along with heaps of herring. When conditions have allowed, some good pink snapper were caught from the stones, while Emu Point has been very murky but produced a few big Samsonfish on the incoming tide. Small bream have been taking baits in the King and Kalgan rivers. Kids on school holidays have been busy at the town marina, getting on to fat herring, some nice squid and the odd cuttlefish as well as bream, small skippy, leatherjacket, yellowtail and numerous pickers. Squid fishers have done well at Whalers Cove, Frenchman Bay and Quaranup, which have also been thick with herring.

Cheers to the Trailblazers Albany crew for their fishing tips this week! Swing by their store if you're after some top gear and advice ahead of your next fishing trip. Remember, you'll also catch just as many fish off the beaches than the rocks and it is always much safer to go with this option on the south coast.

South-West catches
There were plenty of healthy pinkies throughout the South-West this week after the storm making reels scream. Avid fisher @harry.fisho made the most of mid-week glassy conditions.

Boats

Big swells all week disappointed inshore pink snapper chasers who had been doing very well anchoring up and burleying, often just a kilometre offshore where big skippy and a few Samsonfish complemented their bags. Conditions were a bit more forgiving for pink snapper chasers in Geographe Bay. Baldchin groper and the odd tuna were also about, along with squid, herring and small King George whiting for those fishing closer in. Bunbury locals have still been pulling up blue swimmer crabs in the estuary and between pot runs have been getting good numbers of herring and a few small chopper tailor. Sunday’s forecast is looking like a great day out on the water so be courteous to others at the boat ramps.

Shore-based

Despite this week’s blow packing more punch than previous fronts the pink snapper action was fair to middling. They were widespread though, being landed from Preston Beach all the way through to Dunsborough. Buffalo Beach, Preston Beach and Busselton Jetty were among the better spots, but they all also produced a few fishless sessions. Herring have been thick along Geographe Bay’s beaches and rock walls. Squid fishing has been slow but is expected to improve on Sunday. In the Collie River, bream in the 30-35cm range have been taking baits.

Big cheers to Whitey's Tackle & Camping for their top fishing tips as always! If you're in Australind or Bunbury and are keen to wet a line throughout our South-West make sure you ask their very friendly team who love their fishing for advice and stock up on gear at their store. If you're in Busselton, the 2 Oceans Tackle team are also incredibly helpful.

This big ol' buck of a rainbow trout was released back into the shallows by skilled freshwater angler @freshwest_ recently and trout catches have been taking a nice spike in recent weeks thanks to the rains.
It’s peak perch time in the South-West with plenty of redfin in a range of sizes up to 45cm being caught on worm baits, soft plastics, small hard-bodies and bladed spinners in Waroona, Harvey and Wellington Dams along with the Collie and Capel River. The Collie townsite is usually reliable for redfin perch and spots worth a try include behind the skate park, near the golf course, Minningup Pool and the nearby suspension bridge. Trout on the other hand have been much harder to find with many of the rivers further south flowing very strongly. Feeder streams around Pemberton look the best option, especially as the small rainbow trout at Honeymoon Pool in the Collie River remain reluctant to bite, although some perch fishers have picked up a couple of small rainbows at Harvey Dam.
Mandurah and surrounds
Mandurah was a certified hotspot for pinkies this week and Recfishwest Board member Terry Goodlich jumped on the wagon.

Boats: Weather has dictated a lot of the activity this week, but when windows were found pink snapper chasers did well out from Dawesville and on the Five-Fathom Bank. Off Dawesville a few dhufish were landed in 20-30m, along with the odd breaksea cod, while on Five Fathom big skippy and slimy mackerel have also been showing up in pink snapper burley trails. In the Peel-Harvey Estuary a few small King George whiting have started to show up around the Dawesville Cut. The drop-offs and channels around there have held heaps of herring, plus a few small tailor and some reasonable skippy. Sunday is looking best for the boaties with flat water expected.

Land-based: The Murray River has been producing some excellent bream along with mulloway up to 80cm. Both species have also been taken in the Serpentine River. In town, the estuary bridges have been busy with kids on school holidays and they have caught mainly herring and a few chopper tailor. Because of the hordes of blowies, it’s often been worth throwing a 10g Halco Twisty or other small metal rather than wasting bait. Small tarwhine were thick at the bridges also. The Dawesville Cut has offered mainly herring, the odd skippy and a few small King George whiting at the estuary end. Anglers fishing the Cut’s ocean end for pink snapper have been mostly disappointed, but the rock walls in Mandurah have thrown up a few. Good tailor fishing has been enjoyed from beaches north of town, starting from Seacapes, and herring have been plentiful on beaches both sides of town.

Thinking of wetting a line around Mandurah? These great tips were courtesy of the super friendly and helpful team at Tackle World Miami so make sure you swing by their store for the best tips and gear before your next fishing trip!

SECRET HARBOUR / PORT KENNEDY / ROCKINGHAM / SAFETY BAY / WARNBRO SOUND

Boats: Pink snapper continued to fish well for crews anchoring and using burley. All the usual haunts have produced, especially inside of Garden Island, along the Causeway, the Sisters, behind Penguin Island and off the grain terminal. Skippy numbers seem to have declined and for most of this week dirty water made squid fishing hard going. A handful of blue swimmer crabs have been caught in Cockburn Sound, along with herring, slimy mackerel and a few garfish, while mulloway had been mooching around the pink snapper burley trails close in. Better mulloway numbers were reported near the shipping channel. Sunday should provide a nice weather window for the boaties.

Land-based: Secret Harbour, Port Kennedy and Long Point have rewarded both drone fishers and casters chasing pink snapper, while herring have been thick on most beaches along with a few tailor of mixed sizes. The Ammo Jetty has held mainly herring and scaly mackerel, while Palm Beach Jetty and Rockingham Jetty have offered good numbers of herring, slimy mackerel, scaly mackerel and the odd chopper tailor. Woodman Point has held mostly herring. Sunday should see squidding improve if the water clears up a tad.

These great fishing tips were provided by the friendly team at Compleat Angler & Camping World in Rockingham, so make sure you chat to their experienced crew in store and stock up before heading out!
Perth catches
Swan River mulloway catches have been booming over the past fortnight and even anglers chasing bream such as @daniel.dimech.9 have been reeling in silver ghosts. Fishing a couple of hours before high tide and around the slack tide seems to be the sweet spot.

Boats

When weather windows were found crews targeting Rottnest Island picked up some decent dhufish along with pink snapper well into the 90cm range and the odd breaksea cod. Good dhufish were also caught out from Two Rocks, while Three-Mile Reef has offered pink snapper, skippy and a small few yellowtail kingfish. Inshore waters off Hillarys have produced medium-sized King George whiting and a few KG’s have been mixed in with sand whiting at the Windmills. Inshore snapper chasers off Fremantle have a landed lot of smaller pinkies, while decent skippy and the odd Samsonfish have also shown up in burley trails. Squid fishing has been poor but this will improve once the water becomes cleaner. The deeper pockets of the Swan River such as Mosman Bay and Blackwall Reach have yielded several big mulloway. Both today and Saturday look dismal on the forecast, but Sunday is lining up very nicely with a 2m swell and gentle easterly wind expected.

Shore-based

With the rough weather rolling through pink snapper catches in close increased across the board and using the anchor/burley tactic near inshore reefs worked nicely for @saltfix.

Pink snapper chasers had to put in the hours this week with the storm fronts yielding fewer fish than expected, however most of the rock walls produced them including Coogee, North Mole, Cottesloe, Mindarie and Two Rocks. The northern walls and beaches apparently were fishing better. A couple of dhufish were landed from the northern beaches and when the beaches were clear of weed tailor were landed between Cottesloe and Quinns. Most beaches and rock walls have produced herring. In the Swan River, micro jigs bounced over drop-offs in the lower reaches have worked well on juvenile Samsonfish, skippy, tarwhine and herring, while the middle reaches of the Swan have produced cracking tailor to 50cm on surface lures and stickbaits with Canning Bridge, Como Jetty, the Narrows, the Swan Brewery and rock walls along the Crawley and Nedlands foreshores worth a try. Despite the cold weather, a few yellowfin whiting have been caught at night in East Fremantle. Bream continued to be caught around structure as far up river as Ascot with bait generally outfishing lures, but they have also been active down river and also in the Canning River with the Narrows, Canning Bridge, Mt Henry Bridge and yacht clubs in the lower Swan spots to consider. Sunday and Tuesday are looking like the best days for metro land-based fishers.

A big thanks to Compleat Angler Nedlands for their great tips! These guys are all avid fishers, know the best spots for every particular species and have provided great support to Recfishwest and metro fishers for many years. Make sure you ask their super friendly team for advice at their store just off Stirling Highway and stock up before wetting a line off the land or boat!
