The stumps of the cypress trees span an area estimated at 0.5 square miles (1.3 kilometers), approximately 10 miles off the beach, and sit about 60 feet (18 meters) below the surface of the Gulf of Mexico.
The forest had become an artificial reef, attracting fish, crustaceans, sea anemones and other underwater life burrowing between the roots of the cypress stumps.
The location of this spot is centered on the hole in the sonar image. Actual stumps should be on the banks in this area.
