Hooking Up Anglers Since 2011.
A few snapper have started to be caught out in Port Phillip Bay. While the water is still a touch cold and these fish require preparation and patience, they can be caught using the right methods. Generally for these earlier season snapper the best bite period is early morning. By early morning we mean around first light, rarely will they bite after around 7am at this point of the season. Getting out on the bay before sun up is key, and spending some time to locate 'feeding' fish is also vital. Baits of fresh squid and pilchard are the best bet, and make sure to use heavier leader in Port Phillip, as most of the fish retain sharper teeth than their Westerport cousins, as there is generally less hard substrate for them to wear their teeth down, and more schools of soft baits such as pilchard, whitebait and gars at this time of year.
Customer Raf fished near the warmies in Williamstown on Tuesday morning to land a nice snapper of around 3.5kg from the shore. Raf had a few different baits out when these fish came through. Customer and all-round nice guy Adam sneans managed to snare a ripper fish while out in the yak over the weekend. Adam's snapper ate a worm imitation plastic fished along the bottom.
